We have just returned from this site where we pitched a tent for seven nights. We found the site to be mixed.
On the plus side: the site has excellent facilities with a nice, warm toilet block and decent and reasonably priced shop. The site is on a hill which was excellent for drainage as the first two night we were there it rained constantly. Despite being on a hill the pitches were level with good access to electric hook ups.
On the other hand there were a couple of areas for improvement. On arrival we had our booking altered to a large tent despite having told the site we were four people. Despite booking a large pitch [with the associated price] an additional charge was added for the awning we had recently purchased. As we had booked a large pitch already I found the additional charge unnecessary. Also, and this was not entirely the fault of the site, we found ourselves opposite a large extended family group who had an elastic view of what constituted entertainment for the entire area we were in. We were forced to endure rounders directly on our pitch by around 15-20 people late in the evening. To be fair, the site had a security guard, but quiet time was only enforced at 11pm. Not ideal if you had young children as we had.
We would recommend that you avoid the pitches opposite the caravans for these reasons. The area is lovely and Helmsley a delight. The site has merit, but we were unfortunate in our neighbours at the time of our visit.

We were here during the heavy rains with our dog, but the drainage is excellent and we didn't have water rushing up at us from below.
Site is easy to find, really well organised, clean central facilities and a very well stocked shop. Staff very friendly and helpful and paid attention to keep us away from the noise of the children's area.
Dog friendly with a massive field for an exercise area and immediate dog friendly walk in the woods straight off the site.
Wouldn't hesitate to go back here and although not the cheapest of sites - you get what you pay for.

Superb site great location for exploring Yorkshire, staff very friendly and most helpful, facilities excellent. Went over the jubilee site, was full but never had to queue. Would recommend 100% and we will be returning again. Lovely little town couple of miles up road with so many friendly people would recommend the old police station cafe for full English 1st class. Best holiday we have had in a few years and my dogs just loved exploring as much as we did.
We went to 'heartbeat' approx 30mins away and took the steam train to Whitby, again fantastic day out and lovely locals made us feel very welcome. Yorkshire air museum brilliant day out, lunch in naafi restaurant superb and very reasonable and best of all dog friendly with no additional charge.
You cannot take caravan through sutton bank but its worth taking a drive down there just for the fantastic views and byland abbey is amazing. I am going to go now but I could go on and on but to round up Golden square 100% recommendation from us and the surrounding areas lots to see and do a week just wasn't long enough

Spent 3 days/nights here mid week during Easter holidays with 4 friends. The site is clean and well kept having 2 main toilet/shower/washing up/chemical disposal blocks, one for the top of the site and one for the bottom. They were cleaned daily circa 11am and were always clean when I used them day or night which was good as it was raining heavily for the first 2 days. The showers and toilets are modern and heated and the showers themselves were hot.
The site is on different levels and slopes downward from the top area above where the reception is, we were at the bottom of the site about 80 metres from the toilet blocks and about 15 metres from the water and waste water point. Being at the bottom of the site had one advantage in that we didn’t get a lot of people walking past at all times to and from the toilets etc.
The main disadvantage of being at the bottom was rain water did soak/run downhill and collected at the bottom before draining further downhill which at times soaked through the breathable ground sheet in our awning and made the grassy area boggy. This did dry up quickly when the rain stopped but still left the area muddy.
Lots of dog walking areas and a public footpath that’s runs towards Helmsley although you have to walk the last 1. 5 mile on the roadside but there is a grassy verge part of the way. There is a market in Helmsley on fridays and a cracking butchers just as you enter the village over the bridge. There was also security walking around the site as well as access through number plate recognition so was very safe. There was a good children's play area and football pitch at the top of the camp site which was one of the best we have seen. A lovely site overall and we did enjoy our stay here which could only have been made better with closer chemical disposal points than just the one in the toilet and shower blocks making the journey easier with a full toilet.

We only live 40 miles away from this site so wanted somewhere for a quick weekend break away with our dogs plus some friends in their van also. Golden Square was very accommodating and managed to get us reserved plots adjacent to each other (we did give 1 x months notice). The site is excellent for dog walking, we walked around 8-10 miles each day from the site so no need to use the cars at all. Site staff were very friendly, toilet and shop facilities excellent plus pitches were generous and well kept. We will certainly come back to this site again that's for sure. It is only a short drive to Helmsley and other local areas of interest where plenty of pubs serve very good food. There are clean separate play areas for children plus an area to play football, throw frisbees etc away from the vans. All in all a top site and highly recommended by us.

Just returned from our second visit to Golden Square, the last review in my opinion is bang on the money so I will just add a few extra comments.
Watch out for the banking at the side of some tent pitches, we had rain that ran down the bank right onto our 2 tents. Lucky we both had footprints down which seemed to have helped but one did get a wet carpet.
As mentioned before the ground is very hard in places, there seems to be 3 inches of soil and then you hit something solid, it bent one of my rock pegs.
It's October so there was only a couple of other tents besides us, even the tin box brigade were reasonably short in numbers due to the poor weather forecast but it was worth it. We did have a good amount of warmth and sunshine plus a nice quiet site to relax and unwind, the Toilets and Showers were very clean plus everyone was very friendly.
So it was a great few days at Golden Square and I'm sure we will be back.

Just arrived back from Golden Square had a 4 night stay over the bank holiday weekend. Me my wife and 6 year old son, the weather was terrible heavy rain and strong winds. Many parts of the site were muddy but the pitchers were still ok. The site has 2 play areas plus a couple of football nets so there are plenty for the kids to do, a large area for the dogs or you can take the dogs into the woods. Dispute wet and muddy conditions the toilets and showers were kept clean and tidy, the shop on the site sells everything you will need. We have been to this site several times and will be back again next year

Just back from an 8 day stay at The Golden Square Caravan Park, where we had a tent with EHU. There was just the two of us and we were checked in very quickly by the friendly and helpful staff at the shop/reception area, who showed us to our pitch just round the corner which was top notch. We were just 20 seconds away from the very clean toilet and shower block and based in a small cul-de-sac area which was away from the wind and full of lovely wildlife. The top fields looked great for campers with young kids as there was a couple of play parks nearby and the wee ones looked to be having a great time.
The shop was well stocked, it opened at 9am and closed at 7pm and sold everything you would need including fresh butcher meat for the bbq. It was fairly priced as well.
There was ample washing up facilities for the dishes and down at the bottom toilet block was 3 washing machines (£2 a wash) and one tumble dryer (20p for 10 mins). For those who don't have electric, there are hairdryers in the toilet which are 20p and facilities to plug in straighteners (also 20p for roughly 5 minutes)
During out stay our electric tripped and not being very good at these kind of things, the staff were very quick to come up and solve the problem for us (thanks Sue).
Thanks to the other reviewers who mentioned rock pegs, A MUST, I took 4 packets with me and I am so glad I did, the ground is very hard but appeared to be good for the drainage as it didn't get to muddy during the adverse weather conditions that we experienced.
Helmsley was probably the closest town which we only ventured to once as we had so much to see in York, Thirsk, Northallerton and the likes. However I would recommend that you go to The White Horse Inn in Almpleforth for a meal at least once. Amazing meal and great friendly staff who made us feel really welcome.
All in all we had a great time and would not hesitate in going back.

Have just returned from a camping trip to this site and was disappointed.
It was a very busy site with limited space for camping. We were put in the rally field which is the first on the right as you enter the site. This was next to the road and therefore noisy.
The toilet block was very busy and had to wait for a shower, however, there was plenty hot water.
The site is in the middle of the countryside and you cannot walk anywhere safely due to the roads and therefore have to rely on driving everywhere.
I would not recommend this site of you want a quiet break.

Just spent a fantastic 2 nights at Golden Square, helped by the lovely weather!
On arrival we found check in simple and friendly and were directed to the top overflow tent field(no ehu, no set pitches)
The views were beautiful and although busy not crowded-the facilities include good play parks, crazy golf, pool table, table tennis and decent dog walks
The toilets/showers were some of the best we've seen always clean and warm with fresh flowers in the ladies!
In a quiet location so a car needed to visit near-by
Villages such as Helmsley (v. Nice)
We were very impressed and are now booked for bank holiday weekend!
