This was our first visit and certainly will not be our last - right amount of facilities and a very sensibly laid out site across different levels. We were fortunate to get a 'cul-de-sac' quiet spot and the weather was scorching so everything feels great in those circumstances - great for walking with a variety of circular walks available from the site and Ampleforth is about a mile and a half away if you fancy a decent pub break. Recommended.

Just returned from an excellent weekend break and have to agree with previous reviews that this site is excellent for all. If you are like myself and search for ages looking for appropriate sites for kids satisfaction then look no further.
Here they have at least 10 different caravan or camping fields/areas which can accommodate every preference, and used this to great effect by placing us right next to the kids (large) play area allowing us to keep an eye on them at all times, even though the smaller park would have suited the younger kids in the group. If you are looking for a quiet spot with great views away form the play parks, then ask for it.
Facilities on site were excellent, clean, and although this site appeared very full, were not over crowded. I must admit the small bottom shelf at the bottom of 1 fridge in the shop dedicated to keeping alcohol cool on a very hot weekend was a bit of an oversight and overpriced. The rules on quiet times at the park were not observed very well which I suppose can be expected on beautiful night's.
In search of cold beer we visited a beautiful pub called the "Malt Shovel" which is approx 20-30 minute walk across fields to Oswaldkirk. At £1.31 for real ale and £1.60 for excellent lager per pint in a lovely beer garden, pool table and barbecue burgers and sausages at £2.00 and £1.75 respectivley we were sorted. It even has its own residential ghost for those interested.
As this is the first time we have taken a dog camping, we found the facilities excellent as did Archie and used them 4-5 times a day.
Overall, eveyone agreed that if we are to visit this part of countryside again, then we would definitely return knowing all will have a pleasant relaxing break.

Have just returned after 3 nights at this site and found it fantastic. We booked after reading the reviews on ukcs and how right they were. We were given a pitch in the rally field which was great as our kids are older and can go off to the parks etc on there own. We hardly saw them as they spent most of there time on the zip wire. The toilet blocks are immaculate and the grounds are really well kept. Definately a site we would return to.

I cannot imagine that you would want much more from a family campsite. Its well kept, clean, 2 play areas (one for toddlers, one for slightly older), 5-a-side football pitch, plenty of room for kids to play, short walks from the site, tremendous views, and very helpful staff. They knew we had toddlers and gave us a suitable pitch, across from the play area and the toilets. They had 2 baths, which is great for toddlers as well. The swimming pool at Ampleforth college is just about walking distance, and was great (kids hour with inflatables in the pool). We didn't do much else - didn't have to, except pop into Helmsley (very nice market town) for some lunch. If there is any slight gripe (and it is slight) it was that they could do with a bit more water pressure in the showers. Our friends don't ever want to go anywhere else ever again (they're a bit strange like that).

Fantastic clean friendly site will definitely return soon. Play areas very good for all ages we have a 12yr old girl and a 4yr old boy and both enjoyed them (so did the 37yrold and 41 yr old!). Showers and toilets very clean. Shop well stocked but not always open. Overall very good. We also had brilliant weather which was the icing on the cake

What a fantastic site ! Its great for the kids it was recommended by some of our friends and we can see why ! You simply pitch up and let the kids go and you dont see them till they are hungry or thirsty . Shop is great but a little expensive , shower blocks are immaculate and even have heated floors . Will be returning on a regular basis.

This was our first time camping trip with our two children (7 & 2) what a success! They had a great time and so did we. The site is situated in a lovely spot, with great views all around. Our pitch was in a great position just opposite the children's play area which was great as the girls went off straight away to play, making lots of new friends, but we were close enough to see them and keep an eye on them while setting up. We were totally relaxed as they played all afternoon with their new friends while we sat at the tent and enjoyed the views. It was busy while we were there but you never felt cramped or overcrowded as the site is spread out over different levels, also the pitches are numbered which we liked, so everyone knows how much room they have got. The toilet / shower block was close by too which was good, they were always spotless with hot water, showers good and room enough to get undressed / dressed. Also had access to microwave which was a handy bonus, we used it to warm our little ones milk, much easier than waiting for kettle to boil. There is also a bigger toilet / shower block nearer to reception if the smaller one is full. Shop is quite good, all the basics you could need, reasonably priced, only down side is opening times, 9am is a bit late for us if we run out of milk! minor detail though. Overall this site is great, we would definitely go again, lots to do in surrounding area as well, Helmsley is nice, plus not too far from York or the coast at Whitby / Scarborough.

We stayed for 5 nights with 2 boys, 8 & 6 years. We have visited sites in North Yorkshire a number of times in the past. This is one of the best sites we've stayed at. Plenty to keep kids amused, good play areas. Site and toilet / shower blocks always found to be clean. Staff were friendly and helpful. Good size pitches. The on site shop was well stocked. We will definatley return to this site.

A cracking campsite, staff are really helpful, nice sized pitches, a great base for touring the area. Good toilet block but could possibly do with another as it gets busy at weekends and during kids holidays. We will return to this site as often as possible.

Just got back from a long weekend at golden square. Had an excellent time. Arrived to quite a busy site, but was still given a large pitch with enough space between each pitch not to be able to hear your neighbours conversation like some sites. Owners were very friendly. Toilets were immaculate every time we visited them, and free showers! with lots of hot water. The childrens play areas were brilliant, had to drag the kids out of them to go to bed. A word of warning though, bring a couple of extra spare t-shirts and shorts as the play park has a sandy base and although a great deal of fun for the kids, they get very mucky fast!. Dog walk is in a very large field with long grass which they enjoyed running through, plus lots of local walks surrounding the site. The site has a crazy golf course, £5 to hire a golf club and 30p per person per game, also has a games room with a pool table, table tennis, and some kids climbing frames. Another good point for us campers, the information chalet also hosts an iron and board and a microwave. The only down side we found is that some of the children were allowed to run wild till quite late on, but I'd say that was down to the parents and not the site itself. Overall Highly recommended and definitely will visit again.
