We chose Golden Square for our first weekend away camping and were glad we did.
A really nice site and perfect for inexperienced campers like ourselves (or as were then!).
Plenty of space for the kids to play and the toilet and shower facilities were very good.

Little to add to a host of good reviews on this site. We made a last minute booking & ended up with a pitch on the overflow field. One thing to bear in mind is the overflow field is higher than the rest of the site and very exposed to the elements. It was quite windy at times and a lot of tents were flapping wildly in the breeze!
While it is possible to walk to the nearest pubs the roads are narrow yet quite busy so not particularly safe - especially at night. The menus are worth the short drive to Ampleforth though!

This is a lovely well kept site. We booked the day before the bank holiday weekend and were accommodated on the overflow field. It is up on a bank so you need to get there early to get the level pitches and it can get windy. However the views are beautiful, if you want a sheltered pitch book early. The site is excellent, well kept and spacious even though the site was full it didn't feel crowded. The shower and toilet facilities are very good and there is ample pot washing. They have a laundrette and ironing facilities if you feel the need. If you have kids two play parks on site and a field with goal posts for footie fanatics, so need to worry about disturbing fellow campers. The staff are very friendly. The shop sells the usual range of things. They sell a nice little pack of local walks but beware they were written some time ago, so take a map with you, although most of the way markers are there to follow. It is a 30 minute walk to the nearest village Oswaldkirk and the Malt Shovel pub is lovely excellent home cooked Sunday lunch and a nice range of local beers. Ampleforth is a pretty village, also about 30 minutes but quite hilly, it has a post office /shop fish and chip shop and the White Swan hotel, which serves the standard range of beers and a wide menu, nice restaurant and garden. The White Horse seems like a pub for locals rather than tourists. Helmsely is about 5 minute drive, you could walk but it is very hilly and a busy road. I will be going back here again.

This was our first weekend camping as a family. £15.50 a night for 2 adults, 2 children and a four-berth tent seemed a tad expensive. We booked late and were put on the overflow field which has a slight slope. On arrival the staff were friendly & helpful and showed us to our pitch. Although the site was very busy, there was more then enough space. Don't know about the rest of the site but you definitely need rock pegs on the overflow site. There are 2 toilet blocks. Both have chemical disposal points, washing up areas, plenty of showers (FREE) and family bathrooms. There are laundry facilities in the smaller block at the bottom of the site. Both blocks were immaculately clean and well stocked with handsoap & toilet tissue all weekend. Considering that this was a very busy weekend there was always plenty of hot water and we never had to queue once for toilets or showers. The site shop was well stocked. They also sell bottled gas. A wooden summerhouse opposite the reception serves a s a tourist information point and has an amazing amount of leaflets. Crazy golf is 30p a game with a £5 returnable deposit. There are 2 playgrounds. The lower one on the overflow field is more for younger children. Although well used, at dusk the children disappeared and the site descended into quietness. Didn't use (or see) the indoor games room. In general the site is clean and well kept. We will definitely be coming again. If you go into Helmsley, you must visit open air swimming pool if you have a warm day - but go in the car, it's a long walk from the town

I don't believe I have ever visited a site with sanitary facilities that pleased me as much! The family room was a godsend. The site is a large one but we were able to enjoy peace and quiet all the same and the children loved the play area. Situated in a beautiful area this site makes an ideal base for exploring the surrounding countryside.

Just returned from this site were we had a great time even though the weather let us down. We were very impressed with the site and found it to be very well laid out and maintained. The weekend we visited was very busy which proves how popular the site is, but despite this there was no queues for showers. The shower block was clean and well maintained. There is a fairly well stocked shop should you need any necessities. It is also a short drive away from Helmsley which is worth a look around. The site has 2 playgrounds, a games room, crazy golf and bike hire which is great for keeping the kids amused. This is only the third time we have been camping, but so far this site is our favourite. We will definitely be visiting again.

Spent 4 days at the end of July at this spacious site with 4 tent units. The site was almost full on Saturday, but there was still plenty space for the children to play. Unfortunately the refuse bins could not cope with the volume of rubbish and were spilling over by Sunday. Also I'm all for recycling but not glass at 11.30 at night as the crashing was noisy for those in close proximity of the bins. Possibly a curfew notice could be put on them. The play parks were enjoyed by the children, but they were still occupied well after the curfew notice creating noise to those close by. In all an enjoyable family long weekend with plenty to do within easy reach by car. A good site very suitable for families.

Difficult to add anything to previous reviews. I can confirm that this is a first class family site, great amenities, friendly and helpful staff. Would certainly go back with no worries. Just two things you should be aware of. Firstly on the field we were in (first on the right after you go through the barrier) it was very very stoney ground and you need tough stone pegs and a metal hammer to pitch the tent. Don't know if the other fields were the same. Secondly whilst the toilet/shower facilities were very good and the site did win a 'loo of the year' award, it was over 10 years ago! Not dishonest but certainly misleading and I believe should be removed from their write up.

Lovely clean site, great for kids up to 11 yrs of age. There are two playgrounds and kids are obviously drawn to them, its great because my kids made loads of friends and played til bedtime each night. Toilets are excellent, plenty of room between pitches, and the site shop is well stocked(pricey though)
The fish and chip shop in ampleforth is excellant though its not open on sundays, mondays or tuesdays. Locally monk park farm visitor centre is well worth a visit and we saw a fabulous birds of prey display.
To sum up golden square is set in a tranquil location, and is a nice, child friendly site- I would return

Spent three nights at this site and we were very impressed with it. The layout of the site was good, and despite very heavy rain on one night we didn't see any flooding or other problems caused by it. There were two toilet/shower blocks on site; we only used one of them but it was clean and we never had to queue. The on-site shop was well-stocked, sold a good range of items and was reasonably priced and there were two play areas, one for the little ones and one for older children; we noticed that one of the other reviewers had mentioned unruly children running around on a night, but I have to say that we didn't experience this despite one of the nights we stayed being nice and warm. There was also a games room and crazy golf. There is plenty to do in the area; loads of places to go walking & sightseeing, plus pubs in Ampleforth and Helmsley for food; there is also a nice chippy in Ampleforth that we tried one night. On the whole we had no complaints and would happily stay at this site again, but as other members have mentioned, bring sturdy tent pegs and a mallet as the ground is very hard in places!
