A fantastic place! We booked with friends and were placed side by side on 4 pitches which were spacious and well sheltered. Grass well kept but very stony underneath and had a little trouble with some pegs! There were two children's play areas and a field to play football.
Toilets were very clean and well kept with hot water available. Also had great washing up facilities. The on site shop is very well stocked but didn't open until 9am on the Saturday which was a little disappointing but not the end of the world. We visited the James Herriot museum in Thirsk (30 mins away) which I was most impressed with!
Unfortunately we packed up a day early due to torrential rain but we will definitely be back later in the year!

This was our second visit to this site and we had a lovely time. The weather was kind to us and we had a pitch opposite the small childrens play area, close to the toilets which was ideal for us.
The site was well maintained and the toilet/showers were very clean during our visit. The hairdryer takes tokens (20p from the shop) and I needed 2 tokens for a shortish hair style.
I would agree with other posters, that although it is quite a large site, it doesn't feel like it.
I would advise anyone camping to take rock pegs as the ground is very hard.
There was no problem with late night noise. I am not sure if the warden does any late night checks, but everything was quiet by 11pm.
A lovely site. One of our childrens favourites. We will return!

This was our first camping trip and it was very enjoyable due to staying at Golden Square.
The staff were nice and the owner was constantly checking that all was well on the site. The facilities were clean. The pitch was ideal next to the play park for young children. It was quiet on an evening and it was situated in a great area for walking and visiting nearby Helmsley.
Would defo go back!

We stayed at this site with friends,we all managed to pitch our tents next to each other. The site was very busy but not crowded .The facilities are exellent plenty of hot water in the showers and they are kept spotless ,two play areas for kids ,there is a well stocked shop which is reasonably priced sells newspapers maps ,guidebooks for local walks etc, nearest pub is about 2 miles away The Malt Shovel, real ale £1.41 a pint! Helmsley also a nice place to visit. We will visit this site again. 10/10

Brilliant site. Actually quite big, but it doesn't feel it. Plenty of space. Great playgrounds for big and small. Even a mini football pitch tucked up out of the way. But its the little things that make this good: footstool by the sinks for toddlers, 2 baths, cloths and mops in the toilets and bathrooms so you can mop up if you leave a muddy footprint etc (and most do, so its very clean), immaculately kept, glorious countryside. Difficult to fault it. Swimming pool at Ampleforth College is very handy too.

Camped 4 nights over Bank Holiday. Was dubious about using such a large site - normally opt for much more intimate ones - but was pleasantly surprised by the separate smaller fields which made it feel much less crowded. Pitches were set up so there was a large grassed area between the 2 facing rows of tents giving a great feeling of space. Bonus was that we were near the smaller children's play area which the kids could use without us having to be with them constantly. Piping hot water, and paying the extra £1 was well worth it for a bath for 4 children when the wind chilled them through! Only down side was there was only one recycling area (which we only discovered on day 3, so had put several recyclables in landfill bins before realising).
Well worth packing a picnic & driving the hour to Fountains Abbey for the day from here. Will definitely revisit this site.
NB take plenty of hard ground pegs as very stoney ground under the well-kept grass.

We have just returned from a three night stay at Golden Square campsite, it is our first time camping and I am pleased to say we picked a fabulous site. We had children aged 3 to 14 and all the children had a fab time. We stayed on the top field we had amazing views although a little windy but we would have got that anywhere. The toilet and shower block were very clean and warm showers, the staff were very helpful and good when checking in. We will definitely be visiting this site again, although there is nothing in easy walking distance we found this to be a bonus as we got to see more of North Yorkshire by driving around.

The dustbins were a long way from where we were. The toilets & showers were good and the people in reception were friendly. Overall I think it could do with some improvement ie more dustbins up the top of the site and perhaps another toilet block, as they have one at the bottom and one in the middle but there is nothing at the top end

What can I say about this site.
Toilets were lovely, hot showers even though they where the push button ones and plenty of them too, loads of toilets and sinks also.
There was a shop on site, didn't go in but I believe it sold the usual stuff found like bread, milk, wine, beer etc. we even got a dog choker chain which broke within 30 secs of being on dog. Lol.
Well set out site plenty of room and the scenery around us was beautiful.
Excellent park for the kids to play on with a zip lid for the

We found the Golden Square site to be well laid out, the pitches more than big enough and the toilet/shower blocks very tidy. The electric was marked as 10amp however we managed to trip it 4 times using only what we would normally use so I have my doubts that its quite 10amps. The play area's for the kids were brilliant and all the kids enjoyed themselves for hours in there. The larger noisy play equipment was locked at dusk so that it couldn't be misused or played with when the noise could offend. On the topic of noise, the site doesn't quote a noise shut off time however if there are complaints he is like a Rottweiler, very nasty and aggressive. The one big fault I found with the site is as on many, that there are too many seasonal pitched caravans and their occupants can be rather unwelcoming
