July 2005 Just visited this site for 8 days, Found the site clean and well laid out although a little bias toward caravans. I booked via internet and not all of my information seemed to have gotten through,Beware if you have special requirement hook ups etc. The ground is very hard lots of stone under the surface bent a lot of pegs !!!! The washing facilities were basic but clean although not used to being timed when showering a 20p token will get you 5 Mins. We were pitched below the larger of the two play areas and although the rules of the site stated a 9pm curfew for the area this was not inforced and 10pm was the norm, Very noisy as all the children seemed to migrate to this play area between 8pm and 10pm, We took a young child and early to bed was not possible. A friendly word to the shop staff about the noise of the play area was not actioned during our stay. Our pitch was well drained (Not surprisingly I'm sure we were on solid rock)and withstood the worst of a 15 hour downpour. Not a site I will be returning to. I still prefer the peace and quiet of the outdoors.

July 2005 Just spent a week at this camp site. 4 adults and four kids aged 5, 8, 11, 12. Generally it was an ok site but be warned if you have a six man tent or bigger they charge an extra £2 per night per pitch but you don't get any more space than all the other tents! Also 20p for 1 token for shower / hairdryers and it lasts about 3 minutes. Also 25p per block to freeze ice packs. Shop fairly well stocked but hasnt got set opening / closing times so it's pot luck as to whether its open when you go. Also the indoor games room/ play area is a bit of a joke, I wouldnt want my kids in there! Ground is VERY stoney under grass so definitely take rock pegs-we just about bent every metal peg we had. No probs with the staff, although some were reluctant to give you more than 5 tokens for the shower at any one time. The kids did enjoy themselves on play areas, good idea to take roller blades or skateboards if older kids like ours though. In all not a bad weeks holiday but don't think I'd be inclined to go back there.

July 2005 Just enjoyed a good weekend at this site, the facilities are good and the pitches were well set out.
The kids enjoyed the play stuff, and there was plenty of room to spread out on the pitch.
We went Ampleforth College pool on a wet Saturday afternoon which was surprisingly good and we had it almost to ourselves
I would recommend it to anyone with a tent or van, both were welcome.

June 2005 This site seemed biased towards caravans. Although I'd booked for a tent pitch 10 days in advance I was sent to the overflow field - a wet sloping field which meant a long walk to the loos/shop across the unlit grass and muddy track, while there appeared to be empty pitches overnight that would have been nearer and flatter.
Apparently only two toilet blocks for the whole big site. Two rather officious staff in the shop / reception didn't volunteer any information but you had to buy tokens for the shower, hire the kids' games equipment, and pay a £10 deposit for a key to drive back in through the gate after 7pm when the shop shut - what if you found you needed those things after 7pm? All a bit much when I'd been charged £15.50 for one adult and two kids in a tent. Will look around for somewhere else next time as there are other sites in the area.

September 2004 Lovely campsite with great views of Vale of York. Ex quarry, so sturdy pegs needed (though the stony ground means excellent drainage.
We discovered the site when our kids were much younger, and have returned regularly since. Very friendly for small/medium kids with two excellent playgrounds which are closed at reasonable times for peace & quiet.
Pitches clearly marked and very spacious, allocated on arrival. Some tent pitches sheltered, but top field can be blowy.
Shop/reception well-stocked, and offers facilities to freeze blocks for coolboxes.
very well-maintained and clean toilet blocks - something the owners are fastidious about.
No pub within easy walking, but nearby Amplethorpe has two excellent hostelries; our favourite is the White Horse which is OK with kids who are eating.
One of our favourite sites. Look forward to next visit.

May 2005 Just Spent 8 days at this site, Originally visited it in 2001, and noticed how much bigger it is now. Still a great site, very quiet after 10.30pm.
Only complaint is the number of Showers are still the same now as in 2001, could do with another Shower / Toilet block maybe up the far end. I was lucky both times to be within 50 yds , but those at the far end would have a long walk.
Great site to use as a base for surrounding area, York, Scarborough etc.

June 2005 Just returned from Golden Square this Monday. Spent 3 nights there, over the Bank Holiday weekend with a group of 6 families. Had a great time. The showers were clean and plenty of hot water, the staff were very friendly.
The children enjoyed the parks and we all enjoyed getting lost in the woods on one of their circular walks. However, I think they could improve the games room and crazy golf.
We were in an overflow field as we hadn't booked earlier enough, so when the wind started on Saturday the gazebo went with it, however that's my only gripe. I would certainly go back again, probably with hook up, and ask to be put in the rally field or a field near the parks (where the wind doesn't blow).
It's situated in a beautiful part of the countryside. The views from the top of the field were beautiful and there are some lovely places to visit. Helmsley is very quaint and York's not very far away so we spent a day there.

August 2004 Arrived here and was made very welcome the kids loved it and I have recommended this site to many of my friends. My only complaint being that when my 3 year old daughter fell into very wet sand I was unable to clean her up or shower her as BOTH shower blocks were being cleaned simultaneously. Even though she was covered in mud it was in her eyes, nose mouth etc. I was refused entry to the shower blocks and the bathroom was occupied. I had to wait 20 minutes before I was able to clean her. This was 11.00 a.m,and I think it is just bad organisation, this is a trivial complaint but one that could so easily be rectified. We will however return but it is worth bearing this in mind.

August 2004 This was our first experience of camping in our tent. The site was excellent, good facilities and well stocked shop, staff very friendly too. We were given a pitch in a quiet area (mainly caravans) which was to the left hand side of the shower block, near the shop. Our opinion was that this was a good place to be as it was out of the way and in a dead end so nobody came passed at all.
Would definitely visit again, downside is that you had to go in your car to nearest village, nothing in close proximity for walking.

September 2004 We arrived at the site on Friday lunchtime without having previously booked and asked if they could fit us in. We asked for a quiet spot as it was just the two of us and we were told this was not a problem. We were given a pitch in the 'Tennis Court' field, this is a flat field with good sized pitches. The field was quite empty when we arrived but filled up as the day went on, however it never felt crowded and pitches were laid out around the edge so this kept the centre of the field open. The site is quite large and there are lots of touring areas with hook-ups if you need one, they are laid out on different levels in small secluded areas. There are two play areas not too close together to keep the kids happy. This is the best site I have been to, the staff were friendly and very helpful and the facilities were excellent. As you need tokens for the showers it is a good idea to get them when you arrive. If you have too many you can sell them back when you leave. The showers were hot and plenty long enough. The site shop sells most things including beer and wine, but do check opening times. We will definately be going back next year and taking our four children.
