Just come back from this site after a very wet and windy 5 days! To make it easier I will bullet point the likes and dislikes. Toilets and showers - Most of the time they were exceptionally clean, toilet rolls always full and showers always hot. When standards slipped this was because of the carelessness of the toilet users, or unsupervised children using the toilets (i.e. Toilet paper all over the floor) Even though the site was full I never had to queue for the showers or toilets, perhaps I went at the right time. Pitch - We were on the top field near the adventure playground and football field. Good size with ample room around it. This pitch in our opinion spoilt a good break. We have two children, so it was ideal for them but a nightmare for us, it was so noisy especially on the Saturday and Sunday, it did quieten down after that though but not alot. We lost count the amount of times the ball hit our tent, but the boys did apologise and moved further up the field. To give the owners a big thumbs up he did come and "close" the adventure playground down at ten o clock every evening, so after that it was OK, except for the track at the back of our tent which was a thoroughfare to the next field. The ground was extremely hard resulting in lots and lots of bent tent pegs and we had specifically gone out and bought the tougher ones. The other pitches seemed to have pros and cons about them to, I saw families playing cricket with complete disregard to other tent users there. The field nearest the road which I presume was the overflow field looked too full and on Saturday and Sunday looking like a tin of sardines, some may like this cosiness but it is not for me. Shop/facilities - Excellent little shop, lots of choice very reasonably priced too.Just wished it could of opened at 8 ish instead of nine. Never found the games room. Owners were not intrusive and you knew they were there if you needed them. Area - Outstanding - Helmsley fantastic, views from campsite were out of this world. Bit disappointed there were not any suitable cycle tracks for young family biking. Went swimming in the outdoor pools in Helmsley very nice and swimming at Ampleforth college which also was very good. Both cost £10.00 for a family of four. To sum up, it was a nice site with fantastic facilities but I would not go there again, due to the noise.

Arrived late Friday evening and we were put in, what they called, 'the tent field' which we later found out was 'the over flow field'. Prices were reasonable except they didn't accept payment by credit / debit card! How any business can operate without taking plastic in this day and age is beyond me. Staff were really nice and helpful. The overflow field is on quite a steep slope, consider this carefully when pitching! Don't forget to take your pile driver to get the tent pegs into the ground because you haven't got a hope with just a mallet! Full of brick/rock?! The 2 play parks were great our 5yr old loved it aswell as the five a side football pitch. There were two toilet blocks which were always clean with plenty of hot water. Shop was well stocked and very reasonable. No pub for food/drinks within walking distance. No pub on site. No takeaway food on site. Site barrier is locked at 11pm. Helmsley village is lovely, the deli sandwich shop serve fab sandwiches with more filling than bread! Would return to this site but not in the overflow field.

This is one of, if not the best site we have ever stayed in. Breathtaking views, great facilities and an excellent playground for the children this site is small enough to give you an exclusive and relaxing feel. Staff were very helpful and accommodating. Really superb with a dog walking field and loads to do in the area. We didn't want to recommend as we feel like it's our secret but the site really is worth going to. We'll be there again in August!

Just returned from a weekend at the above site, the pitches we were given were fantastic and very spacious and flat. Because of the site being on split levels you also felt very secluded. Despite there being no strict time curfew we found it very peaceful. The site is rather exposed though, the weather was mad hot when we went and so during the day the sun and heat was unbearable and yet at night it was absolutely freezing so there was never a happy medium. We were not as impressed with the toilets as were hoping, they have won several awards apparently yet they were not any better than others sites we had stayed at and there didn't seem to be enough showers because you had to queue each morning. They do have a family / disabled bathroom, which we used due to having an 18 month old son. It had a toilet, bath and shower all within the same room, so it made getting us all ready each day very less stressful. Overall. A lovely site in a lovely setting would highly recommend!

Me and my family have just returned from the site this morning, we found it very clean and friendly with lots to do for the kids, there is a big play park for the older children and a smaller park at the other end of the site for the little ones, the shop is very well stocked and the toilet and showers are very clean indeed. I would visit this site again in the future. If you are tenting take rock pegs as the ground is very hard as the park is built on a quarry and normal pegs were just bending and found it really hard to get them in. Enjoy your stay from happycamper90

Booked at last minute, the owners were friendly and helpful. They were supposed to close at 8pm for incoming guests but when we arrived at 8.35pm they were still there hard at work. We were put near the end of the higher terrace where it seemed it was mostly seasonal caravans and mostly occupied by more senior caravanners who knew each other. However overlooking my initial scepticism the site was superb. Our 9 year old loved the adventure playground. The toilet block was kept immaculate. The dog walk went along along a track and then opened into a huge field (with an abandoned Isuzu in the top corner???) and woods at the bottom. There was also a big field just used for recreation. It never felt crowded or noisy on site despite there being a Dutch rally in the top field. One of the highlights was waking up Sunday morning and watching rabbits, squirrels, blue, crested and long tailed tits and even a woodpecker. Fantastic!

We have stayed at this campsite before in our tent but this year we thought we'd try something different. The site has a touring caravan for hire - it's quite an old unit but it is clean and well stocked with everything you could need.
As has been commented on before the staff couldn't be more helpful. We were meeting up with some friends on the site and the owners ensured that they had the pitch adjacent to us. We were close to all the facilities, just across the road from the toilet block and close to one of the playgrounds. This could have been a mixed blessing because of the noise potential but it was never a problem. The owners are quite strict about children leaving the play park by 10pm and I agree with this (I have two children myself but a curfew and bedtime is no bad thing).
The shop is well stocked and the local facilities and amenities are excellent - check out the excellent butcher in Helmsley.
All in all this was another excellent experience at Golden Square - we will be going back soon.

We have just arrived back from the Golden Square and it was brilliant we have three children and they all loved it. The toilets were spotless and there was hot water at all times of the day in the showers. The facilities for washing up were excellent, the water was so hot you couldn't put your hand under the tap. The pitches were a good size and well set out, the play areas for the kids were great and we could see the kids playing from the caravan without having to stand there with them. The shop is very good as well it sells almost everything you need and the staff are very friendly. The site is in a lovely lacation and we will definitely be going back again (we didn,t want to come home).

Me and the wife and two children had a good stay here for 2 nights. The first pitch we were given was very undulated so we asked to be changed to a flatter one. The reason for this was that our tent is a big one and it needs a flat pitch. Toilets were spotless as were the showers and the shop was well stocked.
I would tell anyone to visit this site but be aware, this site doesn't seem to apply a quiet time (eg, 11 at night till 8 in the morning) so some parents seemed to let their children roam the site until it suited them best.
On the whole, go to the site and you will enjoy it.

We have just spent a night at this campsite and would highly recommend it. The facilities are superb - so clean and well set out. The field in which we pitched our tent was good, near to the playground, although as it rained not so good for the children then. The only drawback we had was that we took our small dog and the pitch we were given was right next to a field of sheep! Not a good choice as our dog was quite unsettled, even through the night. We could have asked to be moved but there was not other place to go. Beautiful countryside and many lovely walks.
