We booked this site over the phone at short notice to be able to go to an open-air performance of 'The Tempest' in Lyme. On opening up the Hook Farm web-site, there was a flag saying that The Red Arrows would be performing on the same night, so that was a bonus, and a big step-up from many camping websites that only seem to be updated annually.
The access up Gore Lane is steep and narrow for a coachbuilt motorhome, but there are plenty of passing places and the entrance to the site is commodious. Booking in was straightforward and the site office has a good stock of essentials at 'normal' prices, including OS maps.
First impression on being shown to the pitch was the realisation that whoever looked at this steep field many years ago and decided it would be good for camping was inspired. The extensive terracing and landscaping means that pitches don't feel overcrowded and gives most campers a good view to the north and west. Although the site was well filled we had no problems with the spacious ablutions block. The facilities were clean and well maintained, and the 4 minutes you get for 20p in the shower seemed plenty.
Minor criticisms only:
1 - the wifi is good but pricey - we paid £7. 50 for 48 hours for 2 devices (especially galling as we then found our 3 mini device got a good signal);
2 - using the drive-over drain for grey waste involves parking your MH in such a way that access to part of the site is blocked;
3 - recycling doesn't seem to feature highly.
We used the nearby footpath into Lyme and found it a delightful half-hour or so's stroll. It's no use at night though, being largely unlit, but the walk back up the B3165 is not unpleasant. There is a bus service during the day. We had a drink at 'The Talbot', the nearest pub to the site, where the natives were friendly, but the kitchen happened to be out of commission for building works. No more needs to be said about Lyme itself, one of the most delightful spots on the south coast.
Altogether a splendid site and well worth making the effort of getting up Gore Lane.

We love this campsite, friendly, well run - they actually enforce the 10pm quiet rule- and a proper place for considerate genuine campers. Showers are spacious and toilets clean and the 20p gives you more than enough time in the shower. A well stocked shop and friendly helpful warden made the stay easier. The dog exercise area is a lovely small woodland. This is one of my favourite sites after 15 years camping.

Very well run and professional site, lovely riverside walk into Lyme Regis (although didn't think a lot of Lyme Regis itself if truth be told). Very clean and well equipped toilets and showers, normally I'm a fan of the 20p a shower method as people tend not to loiter too long and stops queues but have to say on our last morning paying 20p for a cold shower was a bit much but I guess as the shower block is powered by solar panels and the weather had been really grim for the past couple of days there was a lack of warm water.
Had an amazing Sri Lankan curry one night that is cooked and served up on site and I think they have a pizza night also. Staff seemed friendly and very courteous but also professional, the owner was on hand on site and was very busy keeping all happy. Good well equipped shop on site and a pub just round the corner. Nice dog walking area in a small orchard on site, Really enjoyed our couple of days at this site despite the weather.

A lovely site set in the Lyme Valley.
We received a warm, friendly welcome when we arrived explaining where everything is on site and were taken directly to our pitch by the owner.
There has been every effort to make the pitches flat with terracing and there was enough room with space between pitches.
The amenity block was well equipped and although the showers were 20p a time, it was enough to have a good shower and avoid queues and hogging.
One criticism on the washing up area was that there was no waste food bin in the washing up area and often the sink was found with food at the bottom which a food waste bin may help to eradicate.
There is a very small play park on site where the children congregated but there was no large open space due to the hilliness of the site which was missed by my footy mad children.
There is a bus stop 5 mins down the road which goes straight into lovely Lyme Regis where we spent the day crabbing, playing golf, browsing shops and fossiling.
We would definitely recommend this site as a family friendly and well equipped site in a lovely location.

We have stayed here a few times and have enjoyed our stays in the past. We keep coming back as we love the location as the walk into Lyme Regis is gorgeous and the Children also tend to meet up with others due to the arrangement of the pitches.
Having arrived on site with a flat tyre I wasn't sure how I would get down to the pitch after check-in but sure enough Adrian came over with an air compressor so that we could inflate the tyre enough to get to the pitch and then unload and swap the tyre there. Adrian is always very busy but he never meets any of our questions or issues with any frustration. The rules aren't for everyone but for us the site is excellent and we'll be back again next year for sure.

Stayed for a long weekend with family and friends at this great camp site just outside Lyme Regis. We will be going back.
The site is very well run. Staff are very efficient and helpful. There *are* some rules, and they *are* enforced. So, not a site for large groups of people who want to party late into the night; but a great place for families and people who want a quiet, well managed camp site with good, clean amenities and friendly people.
Has a small shop stocked with basic food, sweets, toys and camping necessities; a couple of very clean and spacious toilet and shower blocks with washing up and laundry facilities; coin op hot showers to help save water, 20p for 4 minutes with useful digital countdown timers so you know how long you've got; free freezers for ice packs; sheltered, well maintained and fairly level terraced pitches with and without electric hook-ups. There is even wifi around the site, for a small fee.
A local bakery delivers (order at reception the day before) and local food is available on site most evenings in high season. A good pub (with excellent Sunday carvery, booking essential) is just down the hill. Lyme Regis town and coast is a 40 minute walk along the river valley, and there is a cheap bus back if the hills get too much.
A great place to stay.

We booked at short notice on the day of arrival and received a warm welcome.
On arrival we were shown to our space by the friendly warden, the pitch was a nice size, although located under trees at the back of the pitch.
The site was relatively full over the weekend, but quieter in the week. The bathroom facilities were good and kept clean. Freezers were available for blocks, plus a washing machine and tumble dryer and paid for hairdryer.
Showers were nice and warm, 20p gave you 4 mins 20 to shower which was plenty of time, although if you were the first shower of the afternoon it took 1 min for the hot water to run through.
The design of the site is nice with flat terraces pitches creating a feeling of space even when the site was busy.
We felt relaxed and as per other reviews there were not too many rules.
Wood fired pizzas were available two of the nights of our stay, although we did not try these.
We enjoyed the walk down in to Lyne Regis and did this twice during our stay. We ate at Largigi the Thai restaurant on the beach front in Lyme Regis and had a lovely meal - would definitely recommend this.
We also enjoyed a meal at The Shed steakhouse in Seaton.
Would definitely recommend a trip on the Seaton Tramway ideally on a clear day as the views are lovely. We started at the Colyton end where parking was free.
We also visited the highest point in Dorset Pilsdon Pen which is close by, just a 10 minute walk up from where you park your car to the top - look out for a small layby. Unfortuntely we visited on a foggy day, but I imagine the views were amazing!
We also visited Portland Bill including the lifehouse and would also recommend.
All round a great stay - the only downside was the weather and also unfortunately the sap and stains covering our tent from being under the trees. We did book our pitch at the last minute and there were plenty of pitches not under trees.

A lovely site. The initial appeal of this site to us was the slightly more basic approach. (No clubhouse with naff lager and an Elvis act on every night, you get the picture. )
What a fantastic little place. The staff are very friendly and helpful. The layout is nice. I was a bit dubious of how ram packed it was and thought it would feel noisy and overcrowded but it's been well set up and is well run.
Being on a hill, every pitch is on it's own terrace, with little paths running all over the place to get about. Every pitch has a parking space allocated next to the pitch but it's all very natural and flows together well.
The terrace layout overcomes the feeling of being overcrowded, you aren't crammed next to people or set out in regimented rows and consequently the site can be full (as it was for us) and yet not feel that way.
The 'dark valley' aspect is brilliant. There isn't any site lighting, meaning that in the evening you can get together with the neighbours, have a bottle of wine (or two) and sit out with a couple of lanterns without feeling like the rest of the site is doing the same. It makes for a very special feel to the evening and some really good stargazing.
The facilities are very good. Ablutions are spacious and kept very clean. Never had to queue for showers or toilets. Ample hot water.
Nice little well stocked shop selling the essentials.
The pub at the bottom of the hill is nice enough but seems to be swinging towards the 'restaurant that serves beer' rather than the 'pub that serves food'. Bar area is tiny and although it claims to be a dog friendly pub, I wouldn't want to take ours in as there wouldn't have been the space.
The only criticism about the site is more geological than managerial. Whilst the pitches are beautifully maintained and the whole place is well constructed, there is only about two inches of topsoil before you hit rock.
TAKE STRONG OR EXTRA PEGS WITH YOU. Standard wire pegs will more than likely get ruined.

Arrived late in the afternoon, wanting to stay 3 nights with no booking, and we were told one night was available, next night we'd have to move to the pitch next door and then no guarantee for the third night as to being fully booked, so we decided to give it a go.
Upon being shown to our pitch, it was a vary busy campsite totally crammed, and did not give me a good vibe. We couldn't get the tent pegs in, there seemed to be a concrete block about 4 inches in. Very frustrating. So we left and went down the road to the next campsite.

This is a well managed quiet site spread out over several terraced levels with clearly defined pitches. Most of the pitches were reasonably level. However, we were not given a choice of pitches on arrival. The terraces were separated by mature shrubs and trees giving a good degree of privacy. The upper terrace gives the best distant views. NOTE: the ground is very stony and sturdy tent pegs are essential! The facilities are modern and very well serviced with a small shop at the reception area for the daily basics(the showers are metered and run on 20p coins). The nearby pub (The Talbot) is a 10 minute walk from the site and offers decent food and a range of ales at reasonable prices. The site is located a short drive from Lyme Regis or an enjoyable 40 minute walk following the route of the river Lym down into town. Lyme Regis has a pretty harbour (The Cob), a sandy beach for the kids, and a good selection of shops, pubs and restaurants/ takeaways. Nearby places worth visiting include Weymouth, Bridport, Charmouth, Abbotsbury and Sidmouth.
