Just spent days here. Wednesday through to Sunday. My tip is to only stay here mid week. Its an OK site but at the weekend its packed and over crowded. People race around the roads as though they are on the A1 and I would not feel happy leaving a child to play because of this. The toilet block is excellent, very well planned and thought out. The touring site however is a very long distance from anything, so be prepared. The staff were fantastic. Very friendly and looked as though they quite liked working there, which is unusual these days. The food in the Mash and Barrel was excellent, very unexpected. Try the chicken burger, its not a burger, it was 4 slices of chicken fillet. Handy bus service runs from the 3 gates to the site. Also Haven had fantastic offers on and so the 5 days was only £32, which you cant beat.

We got a bargain out of season price of £32 for 4nights for a super pitch. If you want to use an awning I would strongly recommend you avoid both super pitches and hard standing pitches as the awning area will be a square of mud which was 3 inches of sloppy mud when we arrived after a down poor. As per a previous reviewer the hard standings are not level. We asked the advice of the warden who was really helpful and moved to a grass pitch, these also have muddy awning areas but he was happy for us to pitch 10 ft further forward to avoid the mud. The facilities are clean and warm and cleaned frequently, however, most hooks on the doors were broken which is a shame for such a new facility. The bars and entertainment are about a 5 minute walk away and is typical family entertainment with a variety of acts on throughout the week. I would use the site again when the prices are right but would book a grass pitch and make sure I had plenty of chunks of wood to get the caravan level.

Check in was very straight forward, shock to find there was only one toilet block to service the whole touring field. We booked a super pitch and was high lighted on a map where we were to go. When we pulled up at our pitch we had a hard standing base with a huge puddle/swamp where our awning was suppose to go. Me and my husband just looked at each other in disbelief, at that point the site warden arrived to see if we were ok, showing him the pitch and explaining we wanted to put our awning up, he shrugged his shoulders and asked us if we really needed to put it up. I asked my daughter who is 5 and had her wellies on to stand in the puddle to see how deep it was 3inch of water 3 1/2 ft wide. Eventually they agreed to move us. After setting up we set of to explore the site, really strange set the touring field is at the furthest part of the park, we could see more of the crows nest park than the blue dolphin. We went to the shop (spar) hardly anything left and well over priced. The park on touring field had dog mess in it which was hard to spot with leaves blowing all over. Swimming was fun we had to ask if the slide was going to be working twice only to be told maybe tomorrow, changing rooms were clean but freezing. Amusements were good fun. They have a Burger King, fish and chip and a papa johns. Mash and barrel is like a bar restaurant. We went for a character breakfast after swimming one morning, I was second in the queue to pay, the lady in front got served and went off for her family's breakfast, the young girl went to the coffee machine, put a cup under it, stared at it for 30 seconds, a second girl came, walked past me to go talk to the other girl at the machine, I stood there for 5 minutes waiting for one of them to say something but neither did, so I said excuse me only to be ignored so we left.

Entertainment on a night was a lot to be desired, rock and roll bingo £2, party dances and two guys been very camp which can only be described as flirting with each other. Tattoos £4 and hair braids £5 both a must for my daughter, kids drinks in a Rory cup almost £5.

We came home 2 days early, I've stayed on haven sites before and enjoyed them, this one wasn't one of them, and I know your going to say time of year and the weather. This has never phased us before and we have had a great family holiday.

Firstly, I'll point out that I have never written a review on any site we have visited in the past but I felt compelled to write one for this site as it's the worse site we have visited in the 2 1/2 years of owning a Motorhome.

There was only one pro for this site and that is the toilet and shower facilities, probably one of the best we have used. Very clean, plenty of showers, toilets and sinks and were always very warm and the water hot.

Cons:

Firstly if you struggle to walk far or are disabled I would give this site a miss. It's very sloping and hilly and quite a way away from the shop and all entertainment facilities.

We always, where available book a hard standing electric pitch as it takes the hassle out of levelling up to a degree, on the odd pitch in the pasts I have had to use my ramps to get an inch or two lift to level up but nothing more. We'll, this site is so uneven and hilly that we couldn't get anywhere near level with my new Thule jumbo ramps and standard fiamma ones too. The concrete hard standing pitch for god only knows why, followed the lay of the land which was very sloping. To give you a better idea how bad it was, we ended up parking on the grass next to the hard standing as it had a dip at the back of it presumably where caravan ears parked their cars, which in someway helped a little to get somewhere closer to level using the jumbo ramps too. Even at that whilst cooking my breakfast, the pan still slid on the cooker top.

We ended up moving after 3 days by the toilet block onto a grass pitch (with no refund for the difference in price of pitches) as those pitches were reasonably level but still needed ramps.

We found the bar staff very poorly trained and quite abrupt, not friendly at all. We were served lager in bitter glasses and by the time we reached our seat the drink was as flat as a f**t. When we requested a lager glass we were told sharply ' that's all we've got people keep nicking the lager ones'

I got in touch with Haven head office to bring these matters to their attention whilst we were there, the pitch move onto grass sorted the sloping pitch problem but on contacting the bar manager on my behalf regarding the flat lager we were told that the glasses they used were legal and had head keepers in them (widgets). I can assure you, the glasses we were served had no markings or head keeper in them. So in a nutshell we were fobbed off. At £3. 65 a pint I expect to enjoy it.

We didn't try the food in the cafe bar as a lady in a caravan near us did and told us not to bother. I can however say that the Burger King and pappa johns pizza place were excellent.

This is the first Haven site we have visited and I can assure you it will be our last!

Spent 5 nights (Mon to Sat) here during busy school holidays, We booked a basic non electric pitch and on arrival were shown where to go and were put amongst other tents on an area usually used for caravans, the ground was flat and located fairly near the main toilet/shower block. The toilets and showers were kept cleaned constantly by the staff and considering how busy the site was they were spotless ! The touring site staff and the security staff were so helpful and polite and any problems sorted immediately. The site was unbelievable quiet at night I was expecting after reading previous reviews a lot of noise but heard nothing and I was sat out till midnight most nights, security did very regular patrols.

The swimming pool was very busy and overcrowded which was a shame. The mash and barrel pub staff were useless at serving drinks at the bar and it took hrs to get served very overpriced drinks on the one night I ventured in there.

The kids loved the children's evening entertainment ( I hated it ! haha )

Overall very impressed with touring site not so impressed with rest of site which needs serious updating and customer service training for staff. Good location for exploring Whitby, Scarborough, and surrounding areas.

My score is for the whole site and facilities if it was scored just for touring site it would be 10 out of 10 !

Stayed at the Blue Dolphin for 1 week in July. Wasn't sure what to expect from an Haven site but we were impressed. We had a decent sized pitch & the toilet and shower block was immaculate. A short walk through the site takes you to the statics where all the amenities are. We called at the pub and sat outside and within a minute a member of staff came over and asked if our dog would like a bowl of water & some dog biscuits. All the staff we spoke to were very friendly & also knowledgeable of the local area. If you are taking children there are lots of activities them. At the top of the site there is a dog walking area and from there, up a short track takes you to the cliff tops & the Cleaveland Way walk. To the left is Cayton Bay and to the right is Filey. At the site entrance there is a bus stop to Filey or Scarborough. There's an excellent pub in the village of Gristhorpe (which is walkable) called The Bull Inn which serves good food. There is also a pub in Lebberston called the Ox Inn but we didn't try that one.

To sum up: Good site, will book again if the price is right. £113 for 2 adults & dog with caravan & awning on grass with electric in july but quoted £290 in August!

We visited Blue Dolphin for 7 nights using our tent. We were greeted warmly at the touring office & directed to our electric hook up pitch

Facilities on site were great, toilet/shower block good always clean with friendly cleaning staff there very often. Washing up facilities good - shame people kept stealing the plugs :-( The security staff were visible on even the camping site & were responsive if needed - I had cause to ask for help with a noisy tent very early one morning

We braved swimming twice - indoor pool was on the cool side - pool was really rammed and meant we couldn't use it to swim in - the slides were enjoyed though by our 3 & 6 year old - its a shame some other users were splashing excessively which upset our younger child - my husband had to ask them to pack it in

Entertainment - fantastic - the team & characters were really well received they thrilled our children who are still singing and dancing now!

The bar is dear and understaffed but nevertheless no less enjoyable. The Galaxy bar seating & floors do appear grubby and in need for a facelift

Mash & Barrell - we went for character breakfast which was really delicious and served very promptly

We also did the cliff walk into Filey - really nice (cheated & got the bus back tho!) Filey has a lovely beach, we also visited Whitby to go on the steam train to Goathland (Heathbeat / Aidensfield) and Bridlington

We have to say having read the reviews we were unsure but this site is great and we will return!

What a fantastic place the Blue Dolphin is. We camped here for a week in July and had the best camping experience we've ever had. We had to postpone our arrival by two days due to ill health and the campsite changed our arrival date without any extra charge. When we arrived the campsite reception had closed (it was after 5pm) but we found our welcome pack with map/ passes etc in an honesty box on the side of the building. Brilliant! We had a non electric hook up pitch which was located on the very top of the site. We were free to pitch anywhere here and we got a lovely spot overlooking the whole site. The shower block is really modern and was always spotlessly clean. The cleaners were always cheerful and happy to talk. I once left my watch at the dish washing area and returned to find a note saying it was in the lost property! The entertainment complex is great and had all the usual haven things going on. Our two children loved the pools and the character shows in the evening. Our son also loved the football pitches. All in all I would highly recommend this campsite. We're already thinking of booking again for next year only next time it'll be for two weeks instead of just one!

 Mixed feelings about this site.

First +ves

Toilet block excellent, very well looked after and staffed throughout the day, with hard working staff.

Pretty good facilities and very cheap (£66 for 5 nights)

Indoor pool was nice and warm on our visit and agree that Mash and Barrell was reasonably priced and decent food.

Then -ves

Touring area pretty poor and the big disadvantage being in the area we were in (pitch 173 or was it 137), we were packed in with very little space, hardly any room to sit out and enjoy the beautiful weather we got.

Would we go back - at a push yes, but probably try somewhere else first, due to lack of space

We have visited this site many times and its one of the kids favourites. This time we had an electric pitch on the lower field near the portaloo showers/toilets. Dont be put off by the portaloos, they are actually very nice inside and were kept clean the whole time we were there. Showers were hot and no queues when I used them. They do lock the showers overnight - I can understand their reasons seeing the kids running in and out of the toilets at 11pm! You can easily walk up to the other block if you want a shower very early or late.

When we left on the Sunday the area around us was fairly packed. Lots of small children and babies so its going to be noisy, don't expect any late lie ins but you expect that at Haven! A bit of late night noise too but nothing too bad. Take ear plugs if it bothers you. There are signs up saying no noise after 11pm or you will be removed from the site.

We got the bus into Filey one day, £3. 20 return for an adult and kids are free at the moment. The bus takes you right into the middle of Filey - but wait at the opposite side of the road to the bus stop at Blue Dolphin if you are heading to Filey, this is not clear and we missed the first bus.

We ate at the Mash and Barrel which was really nice and reasonably priced. The biggest disappointment of our stay was the indoor pool which was freezing cold on a rainy Saturday - maybe they didn't want people to stay in too long!

One final thing to mention was the overflow field at the bottom which we walked through - its a bit rough and the grass was about 6 inches long. You can pitch where you like though so it might be the place for a quiet spot. All in all a really nice break and very cheap out of season.

We will be back!
