This is a well run site. On arrival you are given a map showing your pitch. There is and area with electric hook-up and a separate tent area without hook-up. One area of the tent side was smaller and very nice being next to the river. My motor home pitch backed on to the river where we were visited by ducks every night

The reception is well run I had read the comments regarding the staff but I had no problems with them and found them helpful and informative regarding transportation walks etc.The shop sells a range of essentials tea coffee, ice-cream etc. They also stocked a few toys and usual bits of camping equipment.

There is a play area for the children and there is a pub on the site that sells evening meals although we did not use this ourselves

There are 2 amenity blocks the main one in the centre of the electric hook-up area has about 8 showers and the same number of toilets and 2 hairdryers which are free and absolutely immaculate. There is also a bath for a small fee. Hubby said that the men’s are to the same standard. There is a disabled toilet launderette and dishwasher area with 3 sinks and chemical loo disposal point at the main amenity block. The 2nd block is in the tent area and I believe to the same standard as the second smaller block.

We liked this site s there was a bus stop just outside and a lovely walk into Bath along the river which takes 20 to 30 mins to walk. The site is a busy site with a lot of people just staying one or two nights but was also a very peaceful relaxing ideally positioned site and we would definitely use this site again if we visited the area

I booked this site by phone in Jan 2009 and was therefore a little surprised to find I was being told that they were fully booked, not a good start. After a bit of tutting and murmuring they started to reel off the spare pitches with hook-up. The reception is also the shop and really doesn't contain the number of items I've seem at most other sites so another minus mark from me.

The pitches are a reasonable size and all adjoin the road so there is some traffic but everyone was taking care to look out for children. As is my knack it was tipping down when I put the tent up, and did so for the rest of the night. The ground round the tents seemed to drain well so there were no issues with a quagmire setting in.

There is a pub/restaurant on site and the food looked nice but was really expensive so we passed. Drink wasn't much cheaper either and during a moment of weakness bought a bottle of wine which set me back £12.

The website for Newton Mill says it was awarded five stars in 2008 for the washrooms/toilets. I would rate them as average and no more. As an example. There was a dedicated room that had a bath ( nice touch ) and there was always plenty of hot water. In the bath room was a sign that said please use cleaner to clean bath and floor. Neither was there a mop or any cleaner and hence the bath was 'hairy'. There is a mop in the gents for cleaning the floors after showering but the water was always very dirty. Two or the three sinks were blocked several days running. On the plus side whatever time you wanted a shower there was hot water.

There are effectively three areas to stay in. The first field you come to has no car access and no hook-up, set across a stream and amongst trees, so it's back to nature. The section we were in is where the tents are set up most pitches were level. Past reception is where the caravans/motor homes set up and also a second toilet block ( which was better than ours ).

The site itself is set back from the road and doesn't suffer from people or road noise.

To be completely honest I would rate this site as just average.

Despite booking for 3 pitches together (4 months ago) a mistake had been made and only 2 of the pitches were together. This was a big problem as we all had children & wanted to sit out together after the kids had gone to bed. The staff were not particularly apologetic about the mistake & initially told us they couldn't do anything about it as they were fully booked. They did however in the end do some swapping about and sorted the problem (for which we were grateful).

We had booked large pitches - however these were not large at all & left no room for the car beside the tent so we had to park right in front of the tent - obscuring our view. There was no space for children to play near the tent. In my opinion the site is also very overpriced! We have stayed in much nicer places much more cheaply - maybe it is because it is close to Bath.

The facilities were good / clean. The stream was nice and the main draw for us was the great cycle track (Bristol - Bath Railway Track) which was great for traffic free cycling with the kids.

We saw this site advertised in one of the club magazines and thought it sounded ideal for visiting Bath for 3 days. We booked it 3 months in advance over the phone and were given a reference number and a quote of £22 per night. We arrived about 1pm and showed the young woman on the reception our reference number and told her we were staying for 3 nights. She was so offhand and bordering on the downright rude, then asked me for £96. I pointed out that I had been quoted £66. She then stated that the site had changed hands, but the new owners would honour the quote. She gave me a pitch number and directions, but was still offhand.

This site is in a lovely setting as advertised, but it was a shame that the staff could not have been more helpful and civil. This site had stated that they had award winning toilet and shower blocks. Maybe they were once, but certainly are not now. There is no TV reception except from their booster, which was not working in our case. I could not get any member of staff to take an interest in repairing it, so I gave up. The pitches on this site are mixed tent and vehicles and far to close together. We got to visit Bath by bus from a bus stop fairly close to the site. We did use the club house and the prices were reasonable. After 2 days we had seen enough and left a day early. Shame, maybe we just picked the wrong time to visit this site.

Second time I've stayed here. No major problems, a good site if you want to visit Bath.

Only gripe I had was the car parking space on the top camping area is too small. You can't get two cars in. This means that you or your neighbour has to park on the verge but it's not far. Just a niggle having to cross the road for gear.

Toilets and showers were good, kept clean which is important to everyone. No noise at night on either of my stays(apart from the odd jet on final approach to Bristol but it's not bad)

Handy for the Bath to Bristol cycle path but beware, the entrance is tiny and easily missed despite the campsites printed guide.

If you want the bus to Bath to partake in the local hostelries its only a 10 minute walk to the bustop. ( I recommend The Raven in Queen Street, good food!)

I can recommend this site.

Just had one night here and as we were late arriving I called ahead and was given a pitch number which I recall was 57. Rather small for the price of £28.00, certainly would have struggled with an awning. Great toilet block with private washrooms, free showers and baths which were extra but great for people who hate showers!

Lovely on-site pub where we managed to get a couple of rounds in when we eventually found it, as not very well signposted and we arrived in the dark. I would have returned despite think it was a bit pricey. However this changed after I went into reception to settle our bill. The person on duty needs her lack of customer service skills addressing. The only words she said were 'oh yes the late arrival' no did you enjoy your stay or thank you she then followed this with 'You need to be off your pitch by 11am' A little courtesy goes a long way

Thoroughly enjoyed week at bath, the site is beautifully set out and the pitches are very spacious, but so they should be at 28 pounds per night.

The toilet blocks are very good with plenty of room in the showers and I never had to queue.

The bad points are the shop, which doesn't sell newspapers (you have to walk half a mile up a large bank,) and no alcohol to make you use the onsite bar.

The restaurant only opens from 6 till 8.30 and the staff are pretty surly.

I would still go back because as an avid cyclist the cycle paths around bath are excellent

We have just returned from a fabulous stay at this site. So many positive points to say, the location is fantastic, 10 minutes from Bath, 30/40 mins to Longleat and within easy reach of some stunning spots such as Laycock (where Cranford, Harry Potter & various other thing have been filmed). About 40 mins to Wells and a little further to Glastonbury. One can also walk to nearby bus stop for buses straight into Bath and I noticed taxis come onto site too for those who may want a wee drink!

As for the site, well contrary to some reviews you will read, I found the staff to be very helpful indeed, they're not full of smiles but they are full of knowledge on the area and are a mine of information when prompted. The site is beautifully kept, having won David Bellamy Gold in 2007 and is very pretty indeed with a tinkling stream (not a threat to toddlers which was my main concern!). Perfect to drop stones or play pooh sticks. Lots of trees, birds and generally lovely all round.

Great play area for children, not directly near to the tent field so toddlers need to accompanied but fine for 6+ year olds to walk to themselves. The pub has a great outdoor seating area, fine inside, small but adequate with a pool table, just be prepared for a small menu, literally 4 or 5 dishes but ok for a meal after 6pm upon arrival day. BBQ's are allowed too which is lovely!

Toilet blocks are generally very clean with lovely hot water both morning and evenings and a great touch to leave a mop to keep things clean. Family bathrooms too are available upon deposit, which is refundable.

My only gripe is the size & layout of the pitches. It's rather regimented, the tent field is in three very long rows with tracks for cars in between. We have a vango oregon 800 and once pitched with car adjacent, it did leave a little room for table, bbq & chairs but no room to play should the site have been full. Lovely place to roam around but not great for kicking a ball with my boys close to the tent for example. All pitches are numbered and pre chosen so it would have been very snug if the site was full.

In summary, we would definitely stay here again, perhaps not during peak season though. This being said, it really is a beautiful site, great location & absolutely ideal for touring.

Visited the site for two nights with two tents, 4 adults and 3 kids (6, 3 and 2 yrs)

Good points:

Very clean, good toilets, showers etc. With no queues. Easy booking (on the day) via the website.

Bad points:

Camp was pretty souless and regimented, and our pitch was only just big enough to get our tent on (and it's not huge)

The food in the 'pub' was very limited, no veggie options and no kids menu, but it was very good value for money (£6 for ham egg and chips, £8 for scampi) and you got a good plateful.

I think this site is a bit jeykll and hyde, as the small camping field looked lovely, by the river and not set out in pitches, more my cup of tea. We were put in the main field, where it is terraced and it is 'car-tent-car-tent' in rows. Not good for groups wanting to pitch together.

To sum up, it was OK, if you are going on your own, and want a fab location (very close to Bath)

PS beware of the flies and take plenty of citronella candles!

I booked 2 pitches early in the year for the 2nd BH in May and into the half term week, I was given a ref number and that was the last of the comms from them.

Couple of weeks prior to the BH, I rang up to find that it had changed hands and that the booking ref was obsolete. After some searching my booking was found and then after some more searching my friend's too was found.

On arrival the price we were quoted didn't seem right but paid up and decided to look at our notes later. We had indeed been charged the new prices and not those at the time of the booking, the owners were happy to refund the difference.

The site however is wonderful, quite, clean and a stone's throw away from Bath City Centre and the Bath to Bristol cycle path; however you need to cross a busy road to get to it and it’s not very well sign posted, basically it’s a short cut.

The ages of the kids in our group range between 5-8yrs and they enjoyed themselves playing in the shallow stream that runs through the site or in the playground, they were also able to use their bikes. No need for expensive entertainment. They loved it!

Caravans & motor homes are in a different area to the tent pitches which are large enough for my 6 person dome tent and my friend’s 8 person tunnel tent, there’s also a small meadow near the stream for small tents with no electric requirements.

The shop was ok (we shopped in the Sainsbury’s which is 1.8 miles away), when we asked for newspapers they only supply them at week ends otherwise you need to go to the CostCutter 5 minutes walk from the site. We didn’t try the restaurant / bar.

Toilet and shower blocks were clean and adequate and for an extra charge you can use the family bathroom. The washing up room had 4 sinks and I never had to wait to use one.

We would like to come back again as we thoroughly enjoyed the chilled atmosphere of this site, the only thing that might give us second thoughts is the high prices for this year. This may explain why after the BH the tent area was quite empty yet it was half term week
