We stayed here with friends with a total of 3 tents, had a fantastic weekend. The staff on site were very helpful and kind showing us where ton pitch and talked us through the site rules. We hired the swimming pool and had great fun and even took our own inflatables, it was £30 for an hour which split three ways was great. The toilet block is shabby but they advised us this is being done this winter, the park is also old and dangerous as parts are broken but our kids seem to make there own fun. We went to the carvery across the road which was lovely, All in all a great weekend and can't wait to book again next year when the improvements have been made.

We visited this weekend with our two children and one of their friends for one of our many weekends away camping.
The web site shows this as a wonderful site, sadly it falls a long way short. We came to the site for a relaxing weekend away so the kids could play and enjoy the pool. This is not part of the booking fee and you have to pay extra for this, this is not clear on their web site.
The receptionist who booked us in expressed I don't care attitude and if we hadn't paid in advance and it was earlier on during the day we would have left at this point.
The toilet block is comprehensive in size but is badly in need of refurbishment, with uneven floors which due to there age looked dirty, certainly not suitable for anyone with poor eye sight. Then add you have to pay for a shower.
The park, like the toilet block is old and tired, my children (7 and 11) wasn't impressed, spent about 15 minutes in it and didn't use it again.
On the plus side the grounds were well maintained, flat and it felt safe, fortunately my children had taken bikes as did many of the children and enjoyed cycling. Due to it been quiet we also had space to play cricket and football etc.
We did pay to use the pool which in fairness was a nice little pool, however no life guard present only CCTV and a panic button!
Pitch size was good as we have a large Outwell so this can sometimes be an issue. We would question however why the field nearer the only toilet block is used for storage caravans and the tents are much further away, this is not to mention the state of how dirty some of these are, both in storage and on the main site.
Overall we felt it was poor value for money, very dated, misleading web information with very poor customer service, not a site we will be rushing back to or recommending as the plus sides to this site can be found for a fraction of the price.

A beautiful site. It is well set out your not more than 5 minutes from the toilet/shower block. They are clean and well maintained, the staff are kind and friendly too. Their pets 3 cats a dog and chickens roam freely and are well behaved, our son loved feeding the chickens. They are planning a new build shower block due to start in September 2013, which will be a grand addition to the site. There is a elson point and laundrette with a washer and tumble dryer that is coin operated. It also has a freezer open to anyone who may need it.
They have an Italian pizza van on site who does very delicious food and a good price. The shop is well stocked and the staff are willing to help where they can. You feel very safe on site with a coded gate.
The pool is under cover has toilet and shower and 2 changing rooms, there are 4 sessions a day bookable in the shop.
We were in the paddock its flat and well spaced out, working electric hook up's, your sheltered by the trees and hedges, the central grassed area is great for the kids to play and you don't have to worry about them not being safe! the small park is nice it has a bark floor so no worries about falling children. It could do with an update but its in a safe maintained condition.
There is a carvery pub across the road and a Morrison's store about 5 minutes away. Its a fantastic store, large and newly refurbished with a pharmacy, ATM and cafe.
We have loved our holiday we have had a lovely week and can not wait to go again! It offers peace and tranquillity, and is close to the city centre for anyone who wishes to explore what Nottingham has to offer from shopping to tourist attractions.

Just returned from a weekend here, lovely site, very clean, lovely animals and all very tame the kids loved it. Only downside I would say is the toilets and showers are very tired, but still clean and bright oh and 20p for showers!, and I believe its planned for them to be refurbished. Great clean and bright pool. Must book on arrival because they limit the amount of people that can use it at any one time (not a bad thing in my opinion). Loads of room for kids to play and well spaced out pitches. Would go again! Loads to do around and about and some great local pubs and shops!

First trip out of the season, so stayed reasonably close to home. Just in case!
This was our first time at Thorntons Holt following recommendations from friends. We were not disappointed. How this little paradise manages to stay hidden just 5 minutes from a major city centre beats us. It was absolutely delightful.
The chickens, cockerels and peahens that roam the place add to the enjoyment, as does the pizza van on site that served up some delicious grub!
Our only minor grumble. The hook-up. If our tripped once, it tripped a hundred times. It was suggested that we were pulling too much, but having gone onto gas and 12v for a trial period only to see it trip again was a bit of a bind. Luckily, a 'live on site' camper was there to suggest swapping hook-up point and. Success!
Glorious weather (all bar a short downpour), friendly staff and nice cosy quiet site.
We will be back!

Great site for families and groups. We have a supertent which was no problem as the pitches are large and each field is only filled around the outside so that children have a safe play area. Showers 20p for 3 min were hot and adequate (not the best we've seen but functional). Playground very good. Pizza van on site 5-9pm on weekends. Shop well stocked opens 9am daily and 10am Sunday (a bit late if you run out of any breakfast items). Staff very friendly and knowledgeable of local area and activities, walking routes etc. Cotgrave was a nice 2 mile walk with 2 pubs, a medium sized sainsburys local, cashpoint and garage. We won't be returning as no fires or fire logs allowed (even if raised from the ground on a bbq) but would recommend the site if that doesn't bother you.

We were quite disappointed with this site on our visit last weekend.
The site could be fabulous, it's a great layout with all different areas, it's well kept, and it's got some really nice character.
However, there are a number of seasonal vans in quite bad condition, with filthy awnings, which really spoilt the look of the site for us, in particular one of which we were pitched right next door to - even though the site was all but empty ! There is also a caravan storage area at the centre of the site, again, filled with some really old and dirty caravans - really not pretty to look at.
The toilet block is extremely dated, with coin operated showers (20p), although the amount of time you get for the money was good, you are not able to regulate the temperature.
The shop looked adequate although we didn't use it, and there is a pizza van which opens in the evening.
We were surprised at how many empty pitches there were, to say this site is so close to Nottingham and many attractions, we expected that there would be quite a few people around, but apart from the seasonal vans, it was extremely quiet.
We would visit again, purely because it is not far from home, but I really do feel that there are some improvements needed to make the site as good as it could be.

What can I say about Thorntons Holt
Good points - first large level pitches which drained well when it rained, but you will need plenty of rock pegs which the small shop sells along with camping basics, fresh eggs from the chickens which roam freely. Good park for the kids and also had a pizza van on site but didn't try as they had ran out which must be a good thing! Also has a swimming pool. Very nice pub in Cotgrave called The Rose and Crown.
Bad points toilet block looks like it was last revamped in the 80`s, cobwebs, everywhere showers cost 20p into an old slot coin box. Tiles stuck on everywhere to try and tidy it up. Elsan point is small and doesn't smell great at all. There is meant to be a new facility block being built but no sign of it being started as yet.
Was told when booked we could put up a pup tent for my 15 year old daughter and her friend but on arrival told we couldn't and they would have to sleep in a field on the other side of site or in the van as they're meant to their words not mine! so ended up putting full awning up and an inner tent which was a pain for just 3 nights. I also feel for £28 a night with electric and extra for pool and shower it is far too expensive for what they offer.
I would use again as only 25 minutes away from home for me but there is better for less in Nottingham.

We have just returned from a 4 night stay at Thornton Holt.
We have visited this site 3 times over the past 2 years, we were told last year they were building a new toilet block, the only thing that has been done is white lines painted on the ground and weeds cleared where they plan to build the new block. We were piched in the Orchard on our own for the first night. The next day 2 caravans and a motor home piched opposite us, between them they had 8 dog's which could have barked for England.
The first night they had a party which went on past midnight even though there is a noise rule after 2030. The site was very muddy, even the hard standings were muddy, You needed wellies to go to the toilet block. The toilet block has no heating, The shower which I used on the first morning we were there was very hot and you had no control on the heat as this must be preset by the owners, the second day the heat had been turned down and the shower was cold it was -6c outside. I don't think we will be visiting this site again.

Thornton's Holt is our 'traditional' open up and close down site, being an easy journey from home. This year was no exception. We visited in April and November for said purposes.
The site hasn't changed much in several years. We always have a pitch in the Orchard - handy for the toilet block and well sheltered. The toilet block can best be described as adequate - and antiquated! There were plans to demolish and replace it back in 2009, but nothing has happened. It does really need updating, It lets the site down very badly.
The site is very handy for Nottingham. A bus run s every 20 minutes from outside The Shepherds pub - just down the road. (Don't even think about taking the car into the city).
The pub usually has a reasonable and cheap carvery, but this time it was affected by a power cut on the Sunday (which also took out the site for several hours) and had little hot food. Fortunately there are several decent food pubs in Gamston - a couple of miles down the road. There are also two in Cotgrave village.
There is a country park opposite the site - very handy for dog walking, or just a pleasant stroll to Cotgrave village. (You can always come back on the bus!)
We will certainly keep coming to Thornton's Holt in the off seasons, but not in peak season - it gets too many kids for us then (but it IS great for families).
