We have just returned from a 4 night stay at Thorntons Holt camping site. The site is run by it's owners very well and is exceptionally clean and tidy.
We had a very large tent and the pitch was level, well drained and in the perfect spot (in the paddock area) with a really large grassy space in front to play football etc.
The swimming pool was £2 to get in and although small, was very clean and warm.
The children's play area for under 12's was well equipped and safe. The games room had a portable tv in it, table tennis and pool and felt slightly dated.
There is only 1 toilet block for the whole of the campsite and does need updating sometime soon! The showers are 20p for 3 minutes which was long enough for myself and my daughter. The hairdryer was out of order and there was no heating. Although it was relatively clean it is in desperate need of modernising.
The site has a country farm feel to it and there are wandering chickens and ducks. The shop is stocked with the essentials and there is also a sainsburys and Morrisons within a couple of miles. Definitely recommend the Shepherds Pub which is a leisurely 3 minute stroll down the road - Mon-Sat is a 3 meat carvery for £3.59!

Stayed here just after bank holiday. The site was fully booked but you wouldn't have thought it. The pitches are roomy and spread out so no one is too close. Showers 20p and last for 3 minutes. Very clean but outdated. The staff are all friendly.
There is a small shop selling basics on site. But we found a new, very large asda only 3 miles away, close to trench bridge cricket ground. There is also morrisons close by.
We had tea one night at the bridge, which is on the main roundabout not far from the site.
On our last night a party had too much to drink and were been abusive and very loud after the 10.30PM curfew. The warden was prompt with sorting out the noise and the police were called. We heard no more after midnight. The following morning, the offenders were told to leave the site, which they did promptly and quietly.
The chickens are free range and pop by often to visit.
We will be returning to the site.

We stopped on this site at the end of Whitsun week so was a very busy site. Facilities were ok but a little dated but very clean. Due to the size of the site it would be an advantage if they had more than one shower and toilet block as at times there were queues for the showers. Weather was great except an almighty 3 hour storm on Saturday night with a months worth of rain however this drained well and dried out pretty quickly the next day. The only down side to this site is that the shop is only open until 5pm. Anyway site is great for kids however the surrounding area is not very child friendly.

We booked for Feb half term as we were visiting relatives in the area. Previous reviews didn't seem too bad and we struggled to find anywhere else within the area.
The campsite itself is pleasant and first impressions were good, especially as the wardens were so friendly. Our pitch in Orchard field was level with electric point near.
The nearest water pipe was frozen so had to get water from the toilet block, this was no fault of campsite just the weather conditions. However the toilet block although clean was basic and in desperate need of updating and some heating! Hot water was hit and miss despite paying 20p for a hot shower.
Swimming pool, games room and shop were all closed as it was out of season. All in all we wont be returning unless they update the toilet block.

Just returned from a Fri- Sun stay at this site. This is a lovely clean, looked after site. Its clear that a lot of time and thought is put into running the site. The facilities are excellent. Good clean hot showers, for 20p you get ample time. There was a laundry room and iron and ironing board but we did not use these so cannot comment. The swimming pool is lovely, our 3 yr old son enjoyed it. There are lots of farm animals and chickens and ducks roam around.
We had been booked onto hard standing but when we arrived requested a grass pitch and this was no problem for them to change it. The pitch itself was great, plenty of room overlooking a safe grassed area for children to play football etc. There was a playground that was safe, our son loved it. Security on the site was excellent. A barrier with a code that you have to enter.
The on site shop stocks basic essentials and there is a shop nearby in the village. The staff are all very friendly and helpful. There is no restaurant on site but given that there is a pub 5min walk away that does a carvery for £3.95 a head, they cannot really compete with those prices! Campers opposite us had a chinese delivered.
All in all a quiet, family friendly, well looked after site. An ideal location as there are lots of places to visit/ day trips in easy access. We will be visiting again.

This was my 'trial run' at caravanning. I purposely picked somewhere local (45 minutes drive towing). There were two adults and our four children (aged between 9 and 13). The elder children were not impressed with the thought of caravanning, but we were so lucky to have a dry weekend which gave the kids the opportunity to explore the site.
We were well out of season, so all of the facilities were not available but this did not stop the staff being so friendly and helpful and didn't stop the site shining for it's natural beauty and considerate surroundings. The wildlife (Hens, Rabbits, Cat, Dog, horses, etc) that roam freely around the site keep the kids enthralled and add such a welcoming, hearty touch. My eldest came with a severe bird phobia, but left understanding that the hens are just curious, are so tame, so friendly and can do no harm. I asked my kids to add their comments and this is what they wanted you to know. 'The play park is amazing. I love the tractor', 'Pickle is so cute and I love the horses', 'The play park is cool'.And finally from The Boy. 'Don't let the chickens come into the caravan !'.
All-in-all, a fantastic site that lets you enjoy camping/caravanning and provides all the facilities needed to enjoy your stay. The only area for development is the shower/toilet block which needs modernising. The whole family can't wait to book again and come back in the summer. I definitely recommend this site.

We had our 6 berth tourer there for the season, March to end of October. We found the staff very friendly and helpful, the facilities adequate, the pitches big enough (we had an awning up the whole season) security sufficient with a locked gate at the access point.
A very short 'stagger' to/from the nearest pub for good meals for £3.50 per person.
During our stay we found the area fantastic for walking and cycling, of which we made the best of.
A short cycle away is the National Water Sports Center which is well worth a visit with a picnic pack.
Overall just the site we want to use again next year finances permitting.

The lady in reception was very friendly and helpful answering all our questions on where to walk and how to get in to Nottingham. We were given a map/ information pack to find our pitch, which also indicated where all the site facilities and surrounding POI were, including the local pub!
The toilets were a little disappointing. The conversion from farm building to toilet block was evident. Cubicles were spacious and shower heads detachable, which we prefer, but my Wife felt the water was too hot for children.
The shower/ toilet block is the site’s biggest let down and needs a good make over, it’s not the worst we’ve seen though and we are comparing this to Caravan Club facilities. Toilet brushes, cloths by sinks and a mop and bucket could be left out for people to clean up after themselves in between site cleaning.
Some areas have tarmac access rather than gravel and most pitches appeared well spaced and nicely arranged – few regimented rows of pitches. Our pitch, and several others, backed on to a metal fence which was the compound for their caravan store. This didn’t help the aesthetics of our pitch, but did give some extra privacy.
We used the swimming pool, which at £2 per person for over an hour was good value. But again, we felt cleaning let it down.
The children loved the outdoor play area, but as a parent, I had some concern over the home made appearance of some of the equipment. Older children should be fine, but we kept a close eye on our four and two year old.
The indoor play area had a pool table, table tennis and table football. I can understand why, but these items were not in the best of condition but this never seemed to bother any of the children. They were free though and kept children happy.
The shop was well stocked and staff always friendly.
There was plenty of space on site and next to the site for stretching children's and dogs legs.
A motorhome water and waste point would help. We had to back our van up to the toilet block to fill the water up as other taps around the site are push operated.
The children loved the wandering hens and the horses in the paddocks.
There is a pub (The Shepherds) within a 2 minute walk from the site. They had a carvery which we felt at £3.59 was very reasonable and also good quality for the price.
A further 15 minute walk from the pub, along a foot path, is a canal (no longer navigable). The footpath along the road is also a cycle lane. Be warned, the cars do like to fly down this road.
Overall this is a well spaced out site, very convenient for Nottingham and reasonably priced. Cleaning could be better and the shower block needs an upgrade.
Will we visit again? Only if wanting to visit Nottingham.

We stayed for two nights and found the staff on site to be very friendly. We were pitched in the orchard on a spacious EHU pitch and was told we could pick any pears if we liked. Our friends also stayed in the bungalow with its own private garden which was very modern and spacious.
The shop sold amongst other items, eggs from the many chickens nesting around the site. Had to watch our greyhound though.
I didn't use the showers as have facilities on board.
There is a lovely carvery pub with garden just a 10 min stroll away which allowed dogs in the garden.
We are returning in September 2010.

Found this site by chance & what a gem. Superb spacious pitches, well kept grass. Very friendly staff. Toilet blocks absolutely fine & clean. Shop well stocked for basics. Great pool but does get busy so recommend booking in advance for swim. Superb family site & chickens roaming loose is just lovely, a real farmyard feel. We took our dog & roaming chickens weren't a problem at all. Site is very clean & tidy & we would definitely return again. Good security in place with barrier to entrance. Plenty to do in the area, Nottingham town not too far away. River Trent & waterways close by too. If site not too busy & you want to stay longer on day of departure you can pay small extra charge to stay until 5pm on that day, which is useful to avoid heavy traffic like on Bank Hols. Highly recommended site.
