Great site, stayed for a weekend 17th - 19th July. Stayed on site for the whole time so no reviews on the outside world. Used the pool which we hired as a group for the Sat evening at a cost of £25 for an hour, but I think you can go along to the open sessions for £1 - £2. Kids made good use of the park which is well maintained, shop (mainly for sweets but you could survive for a week on what they had in), and the open areas on the camping field sufficient for a game of football, a small kickabout and a cricket match (junior sized) at the same time. We had a hook up but there are pitches without as well for the professionals!
Freezer for ice block swapping, 20p showers - clean and tidy, free washing up water. Very wet Fri but drainage seemed to do it's job well. Water taps at regular intervals. We are local Nottingham folk so ideal for a quick break.

Only stayed the one night due to only having 2 days off!
From what we saw it was a lovely, friendly and welcoming site.
The shower, toilet and wash blocks are in need of updating. It costs 20p for 3 mins in the shower which in my opinion is terrible as we have been on cheaper sites with modern facilities which you did not need to pay for!
The pitch we stayed on was level but in the open so no privacy, but you can get a pitch near hedge line to give you that.
Site is located in a good area! Walking distance to a pub but are far better options a drive away!

This is a well laid out and well administered site in a beautiful location handy for many interesting and quaint towns and villages, lke Melton Mowbry, Newark and many others. There seems to be plenty to keep children happy with a playground, horses and other animals Oh and a small swimming pool.
On booking I asked about facilities for disabled and was assured that there was disabled facilities. However it would appear that was where the disabled concern stayed as we were allocated a plot some distance from the toilet block and a heck of a long way to carry the elsan cassette to empty. The disabled bathroom (£5 deposit for key) was poorly maintained and looked grubby. There are 2 toilets one raised and 1 standard a shower 20p and a white plastic chair. The main toilets were similar with a urinal that didn't have any autoflushing and there was a stone in the trough when we arrived and it was still there when we left.

This was the first camping trip I had been on in many years, and the first for my two kids, 4 and 10.
We stayed for four days, and found the site absolutely wonderful. We used the swimming pool every morning for an hour, which is organised on reservation basis to prevent it getting too full. And the local Sainsbury has everything that you could need for a normal duration of stay.
There is a little swing park on site, however, it is rusty and a bit run down, so definitely requires adult supervision whilst the kids play there. However, this shouldn't stop anyone from coming to this site, as there also is a large field in the middle of the site where the kids can run around, play tig, football or with frisbee

A fantastic site for families.
Plenty of space, flat pitches, electric hook up and usual waste disposal. Lots of room for the kids to play games , ride bikes etc.
Toilets and showers are converted pig stys but they are cleaned on a regular basis and the only reason you would know the origin is that the cubicles are all different sizes and shapes. The showers take 20p which gives approx 3 minutes of decent flow hot water. If we are not expected hotel standards then there is nothing wrong with them.
There is a kids play area - some of the items being slightly dated but there seemed to be no shortage of youngsters on there which answers any questions really.
There is a shop on site which sells the basics including gas but there is also a Sainsburys Local in the next village and a Morrisons supermarket 3 miles away.
There is a small swimming pool which holds around 15 people which has to be pre booked. Our visit was over a bank holiday and there was no problems booking the pool.
The staff are really friendly and helpful.
I have already booked to go here again and would recommend anyone else to do the same

We really enjoyed this site. The information booklet given to us on arrival was very comprehensive and useful. The location was great - we loved walking along the disused railway track which eventually lead us into a country park. Local supermarket nearby which was useful. We didn't use the swimming pool due to the charge and the small size but we found a public pool quite nearby which was great (sorry can't remember its name!) where they allowed diving so our 2 daughters taught themselves to dive which they've never had the opportunity to do before. The £3.50 carvery was amazing value and definitely worth looking into. The loo/shower facilities weren't the best but were perfectly adequate and we have no complaints about them. Will definitely use this site again.

Just had great 3 day stay over the bank holiday. Site really clean, staff very friendly and helpful. You are given a handbook on arrival. Brill, it tells you places to visit, local shops, hospitals etc Showers and toilets looked ok but didn't use them, used my own. Only downside was rubbish bins are near office and the elsan, shower block etc, which is a good walk when carrying bags of rubbish etc. Apart from that cracking site. Ps pub / restaurant 150 yards from entrance with cheap meals.

I have to say that Thornton's Holt is a real hidden gem. Nine of us (plus dog) stayed for two nights, in a camp comprised of five tents. Despite us all constantly dodging rain showers, in and out of our communal gazbo, the level pitches didn't become a mudbath with our comings and goings!
The shower & toilet block I'm sure is a converted stable building, and as such all the cubicles are different shapes, making the layout unique. 20p for a shower may seem old-fashioned, but you do get a long three minutes. Compare the nightly rates charged here to some sites that include the facilities, and we're more than happy with saving up our 20 pence pieces.
The eggs that are sold by the site shop are fantastic! Free-range (their chickens wander the site freely), and the colour and taste are just the job!
Cotgrave village is a 3 min drive away, with three pubs, a small Sainsbury's and a shopping precinct. A minute's walk away is a pub/carvery (not visited this time) and appeared busy on a Sunday lunchtime. Also easily accessible by foot is the Cotgrave Country Park, and we took the disused railway line route which is a must (in good weather!)
We all really enjoyed the stay, and are definitely going back.

Very easy to find site, barrier entry. Directed to pitch which was at very end of site with trees and ditch behind. We were next to a couple of tourers. Not many tents on site at all ?too early. Everyone respected the 10.30pm quiet rule. Staff in shop/reception very helpful with ideas of walks places to see etc. Swimming pool very nice and warm if a little small but they did restrict numbers. Had to book in advance for swim and was £2 per person.Wash facilities a bit aged but on the whole nice and clean
Only a few gripes really.
Quite a long walk to wash/toilet facilities
Male toilets were disgusting one evening (oh refused to use and wouldn't take our young son in there) but not staff fault.
Lots of animals around (hens, rabbits, ducks, horses, cats etc
Went to see National Watersports Park. Really enjoyable watching people freezing in inflatable boats going over rapids.
Will def be going back to site but will make sure closer to facilities

We have been coming to Thornton's Holt for a couple of years now - mostly for our 'start of season set-up' and 'end of season close down' weekends. Just had our 'set-up' weekend.
The owners have always given us a friendly reception, and the prices are reasonable. There is a small shop in reception. Chickens, ducks and cats roam the site adding a rural touch.
On the positives, the site is well situated just a few miles from Nottingham city. The Shepherds pub is just round the corner. It does a great carvery for just £3.50 a head (Monday to Saturday). Cotgrave village has a good range of shops - including a good chippy - as well as a nice gift and tea shop - opposite Sainsbury's mini-store - which can be recommended.
Radcliffe village boasts both Chinese and Indian take-aways. For a more serious shop, the Gamston Retail area has a large Morrisons supermarket, and is only three miles away.
The former colliery areas close to Cotgrave have been reclaimed to become a country park with two lakes, streams, woods and paths. One entrance to this is only a short walk beyond the site entrance. The former Grantham canal also passes through it and can be walked along to Tollerton. Holme Pierepoint and its water sports facilities are just a couple of miles down the road.
At the site entrance there is a barrier (opened by a code number) which gives some security, and the site is generally quiet. It does have a children's' playarea between the Orchard and the Paddock sections. The place is also an active equestrian centre; indeed this appears to be the priority business.
However I have to echo some of the negatives included in other reviews. The toilet blocks, whilst adequate, are very basic by 2009 standards. Indeed this weekend the gents' side was decidedly 'whiffy', the urinal section was closed off - and pretty grotty, and over the weekend two of the five toilet cubicles were closed off, whilst another had been left in a disgusting state. Whist acknowledging that it is the punter who makes the mess - and there is no excuse for that - one does expect the loos to be cleaned up regularly. This did not appear to happen; the same pile of toilet paper was on the floor for at least 36 hours.
Also the hard stands are not all stone or similar surface. Ours was hard mud, as was the side access 'roads' - fortunately it didn't rain whilst we were there. Many of the hard stands especially, but also some of the grass pitches in the main field and the orchard are taken up by long stay units, so actual touring pitches can be limited at peak times.
All in all this is a pleasant, conveniently situated site, and reasonably priced, but could do with the toilet/shower blocks updating, and more active care-taking.
We will go back - but perhaps not at peak times or after heavy rain.
