It was our first trip with our newly acquired campervan and we wanted to test all its facilities out not too far from home.
Thornton's Holt proved to be a good choice - we chose it as we wanted a quiet site with a pub nearby for food - just in case our stove didn't work too well!
Food at the local pub was ok for the money and not too far to walk. Overall I liked the site and would go back for a w/e break again.
I liked the chickens running around. I thought the pool was nice - changing facilities are a bit basic though.
The site was quiet from around 10pm which was good.
The whole experience could not have gone better for us.

Weekend stay July 2008. Overall a good site and an enjoyable weekend ; here's a few observations.
1. Indoor heated swimming pool - £2 entry and they limit the number of people per session so it was never over crowded. Excellent facility
2. Children's play park. Looked brand new and provided hours of fun for the children. That said, the equipment in the indoor play area (pool table, table tennis and table football) was all in terrible condition and should be scrapped.
3. Free range eggs - collected from the numerous chicken coops around and sold in the shop. The best eggs I have ever tasted.
4. Shop had a very limited range of products (focused more on toys than provisions ?) and fairly limited opening times
5. The reception car park area is a complete joke. It is the only vehicle entry / exit point to the site with a 5 bar gate at one end and a security barrier at the other. It is simply too narrow and not big enough - we had to queue for ages due to cars / vans / caravans coming and going.
6. The toilets are old and could do with a spruce up. They were very dirty when we arrived although were cleaned within an hour or so and kept pretty clean for the weekend.
7. The Meadow where we pitched is a large level(ish) field. Loads of ball games going on which was great for the kids (and adults) involved but could be pretty intrusive if you just wanted to sit out in peace and quiet. We also found that we needed a very long electric lead for the pitch we were on.
8. All showers take 20p coins - take plenty with you.
9. 5 minutes walk to the pub. £3.50 for all day carvery (£6.50 Sundays). Nice little beer garden.
10. No noise problems at night - the site was very quiet from 10.00pm or so.

Lovely site, good facilities and all pitches spaced out well. Toilets and showers were clean and warm. Staff very friendly and helpful. Didn't use the pool but it looked lovely.
Watch out for the chickens ! We were laughing for ages after they charged us, was like a scene out of jurassic park as they came through the bushes !
Lovely pub round the corner serving really cheap food and drinks. £3.50 for a carvery ! and beer was cheap as well

Just came back from this campsite. Our pitch was on bottom field which had tennis net in middle this kept kids happy. This field also had water tap not far from our pitch which was also bonus. Really enjoyed visit will be going back later this year.

I agree with some of the other comments about this being a bit on the expensive side. The pitches are good plenty of room but awnings not being allowed is a bit of a pain as mud is carried into van. The toilets were ok but, in the gents it's a bit of a search to find the urinals, lol, they are hidden away round a corner. They could do with having a bit of lighting, at night, it's very dark. It's nice for a quiet break but a little too quiet for the kids as they were renovating the playground and there wasn't much else there but this should improve in the summer. Well placed for visiting Nottingham, Newark etc. Young shop assistant didn't seem to have much idea about any of our queries. All in all a handy place for a break but wouldn't stay longer than weekend.

We booked this site for a 5-night Easter break on the basis of the good reviews that we read on here, but for the first time I was disappointed to find that the site did not live up to our expectations.
Our first impression was that the site had a shabby, unkempt feel. We were in a big field which was great for the kids to run around a play football in but had no water - this was a trek. The electrics are only 10amp and kept tripping. If you want to encourage all year around camping then caravans are going to use their heaters! It was snowing after all! Ended up putting the fridge onto gas which is fine but we were paying for a hook-up!
Shower and toilet facilities very poor, ended up using the ones in the caravan (more trips across field for water!) Don't mind doing this but at £18.50 a night you shouldn't have to!
Altogether I found that the site was expensive considering what was included. For CL type facilities you should only be paying CL prices.

Just returned from another weekend at Thornton Holt.
As in the past it was a pleasure !
It's a friendly, spacious site with loads to interest the kids - chickens ( their eggs available in the shop !), ducks, horses, wild rabbits, a great indoor pool (reasonable charge of £2/person) & lovely new playground.
For the adults pretty countryside, great staff and good value pub just down the road.
The owner discussed ongoing refurbishment plans(a number of elements were evident since our last visit).
It all takes time and in the meantime, this continues to be one of our favourite sites.

First impressions, a very nice site, and the rest didn`t dissapoint.
When you first arrive, there is a lay-by before the security gate, and a short walk to the reception/shop.
The staff were friendly and helpful, but the shop was a little sparse, presumably the time of year.
Toilet/shower blocks were old, but clean, only downside was the 3 min shower, and the fact it was very cold with no heating.
Pitches well laid out, spacious, not crammed together and numbered so great for moterhomes and campers, you get the same space you left if you go out for the day.
It is best to check before you leave if you want to use an awning at this time of year (Feb) they dont really allow them during off peak, which would have been nice to know before hand.

We stayed on this site for a long weekend last year and loved it. We camped in one of the bottom fields which was nice and big for the little ones to run around safely.
The staff were very friendly and welcoming. The facilities are old, which we liked - the rustic look!- but very clean and the shower cubicles were larger than usual and the water was nice & hot.
We particularly loved the chickens and peacocks roaming around freely and there were 2 horses there too which the kids loved.
There is a small play area and a small indoor swimming pool which was basic and cold but clean.
Overall we loved it and will be returning this year.

We spent 10 days there earlier this month. Lovley and quiet, good security, and flat 'hardstandings'. Everyone was friendly. You do need a torch if staying in the winter, its a bit dark with no lights in the orchard area.
The chickens and peacocks at 11am every morning waiting for their food by the caravan! Some beautiful birds they have and some horses as well.
The only thing is the toilet block, as they are open all year round a heated and better toilet block would be better, we braved a shower but it was a bit chilly (shower was lovley and hot), and all the block could do with a 'high clean ' inside the building.
It is a shame a its a lovley place and we go back each year, but really would like to see the toilet and shower area a little warmer, but will still go back to use as a base for our xmas shopping, N we have heard through a previus review that the pub is cheaper again will venture over there next time.
