Just returned from a week end at this site. The site is really in need of a refurbishment. The toilet, shower and waste disposal facilities are terrible. As for the childrens play area, just make sure that you have a good first aid kit with you.
Although its cheap I would expect better facilities and a site that at least looks as if the owners care about it. It could be a really superb site, so owners, increase the prices a little and start to improve it. A good first start would be to employ a cleaner for the toilet blocks
The only compensating thing for us was Daniel O Donnell. He wasn't at the camp site but he was at Nottingham arena which is why we ended up here. What a great entertainer. GO AND SEE HIM IF YOU CAN. You wont be disappointed.

We spent a weekend at the site at the end of a very wet spell in feb 07. The pitch was supposed to be hard standing but was actually gravel on grass so was quite soggy. The whole park was very wet and the pitches small which resulted in tricky vehicle maneuvers to avoid bogging up the grass. We were surprised by how 'tired' the site was, it all looked in need of a bit of paint and a tidy up. Having said that it served its purpose as an overnight site for visiting the relatives and we will probably use it again. We didnt use the facilties at all except the children's playground which was also in need of modernizing. In conclusion we felt that they had an unfortunate amount of wet weather which the site was clearly not equipped to deal with and had it been drier weather it would have been easier, dont go there expecting a cc standard site because it isnt but it does tick the 'adequate' boxes for a fully independent touring caravan owner.

We went for a long weekend in February. The site was very muddy, the hard standing we got seemed to be the wettest spot anywhere! The man in reception wasn't very helpful regarding helping us sort this out, or offer a drier pitch. Wellies a must. Toilets need a spring clean and could do with modernising. (Very cold). Area is lovely and quiet. There is loads of space and the pitches are generous. Animals and kids loved each others company. Big playground suits older kids. Shop and pool closed this time of year so we can't comment.
Shepherds pub about 5 minutes walk away, typical "McPub" you could be anywhere. Nice food and good beer. Plenty of space. 5 mins drive from Morrisons and Watersports centre. 10 mins from city centre. Overall. We bet nicer weather would make the site even nicer but the facilities are a bit "Tired".

Thornton's Holt is one of those sites that either you like (because it's really old fashioned, not-overly modern and cheap) or you dislike because you expect more (wishing is was like a CC or C&CC site) - but it's a site where you always feel welcome.
We've stayed a few times and don't have any gripes - the facilities are expansive so you get your own shower (20p isn't bad seeing pitch prices are low) and the site is safe enough for the kids to play without fear of danger.
Also - the site is open all year round - so we will be there during the Christmas lull when there is little to do at home between Boxing Day and New Years Eve.
Few other good points: Mini-Sainsbury's in Cotgrave, bus service passes the site, pub just down the road (not that we use them but noticed it), plenty of walks, A52 nearby and M1/A50 easy to get to and place quiet enough to have a good kip.

We have just returned from a very rainy visit to this site. As a Nottingham girl revisiting the area from Yorkshire I was aware of the site. Unfortunately I was slightly disappointed by the site. The shower blocks need a refurbishment as does the laundry.I had a shower with at least 10 different insects. I know I shouldn't expect home from home standards whilst camping but I have been to other camps where the showers were free and spotless. The charge for the showers at 20p for 3 minutes, was a little steep as they took a minute to heat up. The freezer was a nightmare and the food we put in it became stuck up with left over food stuck to the freezer. The shop wasn't terrible well stocked and when I originally called to make the booking , I was shocked by the telephone manner of whomever took the call.I felt as though I was inconveniencing the girl by phoning to make a booking. The best thing about the site was the price, which was £17 for 2 nights and there was 5 of us. I can recommend the 'Shephards ' pub which is over the road towards Cotgrave. Excellent food and service every time we go. The buses are handy as well, for going into and out of Nottingham of Radcliffe on Trent.

We went here in 2006 with our two children and friends with their children all.
We were in the corner of a big field which left the children plenty of space to play etc.
The swimming pool was open at set times and okay as long as you bookd in advance which needed a bit of prep. Games room for older children needed some revitalisation.
Bathroom facilities were okay.
Just down the road from supermarkets and we even had a take away delivered one night!
Nottingham city not far away and we all really enjoyed the science centre which was also good value.

Visited this site for a week during the summer holidays and I feel that it was a well enjoyed holiday. The staff were lovely and always willing to help and the facilities, particularly the shower block, are exceptionally clean for their age. This site is a definite hit for anyone that is thinking of visiting Nottingham. I shall surely be visiting again.

Can't believe the good reviews on this campsite. Booked a few nights several months ago requesting a quiet spot. On arrival put right next to the play area and told they were full. After setting up it was obvious this was a complete lie, but it was too late to do anything about it then. Now, we have children and the play area is no problem during the day, but after dark it's invaded by teenagers playing music, shouting, swearing, and more. There's a 10.30 pm curfew which is never kept to. Then you're woken up by all the cockerels half an hour later! This could be a great site - it's very pretty and the animals are charming, just make sure you are quite happy to walk through chicken poo wherever you go! However, it's so NOISY.

We visited this campsite with a large group of friends and their children. We were pitched in the paddock which has spacious pitches around a large grassed area. The area was brilliant for playing rounders and cricket. We had several children over the age of 10, who were well able to hit the ball, but they never managed to hit it anywhere near any of the pitches. It was lovely that they could play within site of our tents and caravans.
The pool was also very popular, yes it was cold, but that didn't seem to bother the kids who were desperate to visit each day. The children enjoyed the free range chickens that wandered around, and were impressed when the farrier came to shoe the horses. All in all they had a lovely time and can't wait to visit again.
Having just spent a week at the site, I would not hesitate to recommend this site to anyone looking for a child friendly campsite. The facilities may not be up to caravan club standards, but they were always clean. The showers were hot and had good pressure. (I was able to shower and wash my hair for 20p.)
The shop was well stocked with basics, anything else could be purchased from a large Morrisons about 3-4 miles away. The site produce their own information book which tells you not only about the site, but also information about the local area.
The site seems very popular, therefor I would reccomend advance booking during school holidays.
