This is a Lovely site and the weather was pretty good for us.Lots of wildlife etc and lots of safe cycle routes.Had a problem with my trailer tent when the bedroom collapsed when kids were playing in it! Although they say it's the way I pitched it.Basically the two poles that hold the bedroom up buckled and snapped.Went to camping shop on the same road as Moors Valley country park to see if they could help but they could only supply the poles and spring clips.Bought them and returned to H/wood with the hope that the wardens could help with tools. They were really helpful and even helped drill the holes and hacksaw the poles to the correct length etc.Basically they made the holiday for us as I would have had to sleep on the floor and the kids moved to the other bedroom. So thanks guys.

I would definitely recommend this site.Perhaps a play area would be great for the kids and small shop for bread, milk and sweets etc.Not a grumble just an observation

What a great site! You would never believe you were camping along side 600 other pitches. The toilets were always clean with constant hot water. The dish washing facilities were great - proper taps and big sinks - inside a proper room!

We pitched as far away from the main road as possible to make the most of the big meadow where the kids can play. Quite a stony pitch so rock pegs were needed. We had one huge rain storm whilst we were there and found our ground sheet started to float - luckily it's sewn in and no leaks!

The Snakecatcher is a great pub with free wi fi! It's about a 15 min walk or 2 minutes down Lyndhurst Road. There's a kids room with a Wii and a pool table and a great place to eat/hide from the rain.

Take your bikes and make the most of the amazing forest bike paths.

Make sure you lock your food away as the ponies do try - we locked ours in the ice box and the ponies left us a alone.

Would highly recommend this site and intend to return next year.

We had booked and paid for this campsite for 4 nights but left after 2 and booked into a hotel such was our disappointment! Having read previous reviews and been worried about the marauding ponies before we arrived we quickly discovered we should have been more worried about our fellow human beings whose standards of cleanliness and respect for their fellow campers seemed to be sadly lacking in many cases! The site is probably lovely in low season and when quiet but this was the beginning of August and it was quite clearly up to its limit. I do think that a site that advertises being able to accommodate 600 pitches should ensure that it is then able to deal with that number and I don't think the site can. The number of showers, basins etc is fine and there were no queues, but the standard of cleanliness was terrible. Floors were filthy, toilet paper ran out in the evenings and didn't get replaced for the morning rush, soap dispensers were empty and the mop buckets soon became full of dirty water, which made the shower floors worse rather than better. We rinsed the mop under the tap to clean it and used cloths to clean around filthy, hair ridden, sinks but noone else seemed to do the same. The washing up facilities were also generally not left entirely clean. There did not seem to be any presence from staff to keep an eye on the facilities or replenish stocks. After a night having been kept awake until 3.30am by the occupants of the next tent's loud conversation and laughter we decided to check out early.

I've never been one for camping ever since some terrible experiences with the Girl Guides in my youth. However, owing to the current financial situation, camping proved to be the best option for a holiday this year. So after reading through the very helpful reviews on this site, we opted for 3 nights at Hollands Wood.

We arrived as the heavens opened, which turned out to be a blessing in disguise as the pitch that we had originally chosen at the far end of the site soon turned into a large muddy puddle. We therefore relocated underneath a large oak tree, which was a much wiser choice. Although we had one day out of three of almost solid rain, the worst that happened was that we had a few minor leaks where the tent had a small hole, and where we had left things touching the sides. Therefore choose your pitch wisely and you will have no problems with the encroaching weather.

We also did not have any issues with animals invading our pitch - whether this was because we were a reasonable distance from the open meadow (about half way between there and the road) I don't know - the closest we got was a family of ponies strolling through minding their own business. A few early morning loo-runs did reveal that the site has a massive nocturnal squirrel population, who were certainly not afraid of trying to get into tents, and any discarded food is soon picked up by the jackdaws. However, any food that we had was kept locked in the car, well away from any potential invaders.

The road noise was also not a problem - it was noticeable, but tended to blend into the noise of the wind in the trees until they became as one. The main noise problem came from the children who had a tendency to wake up frequently throughout the night and scream the place down - one night I stopped counting after being woken for the third time by a child doing its best impression of an air raid siren. Ear plugs are a must for a good night's kip!

Brockenhurst was close enough for purchasing any emergency supplies (although you'd have to be a madman to drive through the village centre - it was often gridlocked!), and the butchers shop there was excellent - they were happy to hold our BBQ order in their fridge for us throughout the day, ready for us to pick it up in the evening. And their bacon was to die for! Lyndhurst was a little harder to access owing to a bizarre road system However when you finally get there, the camping shop is excellent for all the things you didn't even know you needed!

We mainly used the campsite for sleeping only, as we were out and about exploring the forest during the day. However, the facilities were pretty good - there were often queues for the showers but never a particularly long wait, and even less if you are an early riser. Although for the £8pppn that you pay, I would have expected that the 2nd loo/shower block would have been open more often to shorten these queues even further (after all, this is mainly what you're paying for). I also wondered why there was a very low down sink in the washing up room (presumably for kids?), but no lowered basins in the toilet blocks? I wasn't sure when or with what regularity the facilities were checked or cleaned, as I never saw anybody doing this, and noticed that from one evening to the next morning it didn’t appear that the loos/basins had been cleaned or soap etc replenished (though loo roll was abundant!). Equally, it was unclear how the campsite rules were enforced, as there were a few people who had pitched up inside the 'No Camping' markers around the toilet blocks, and also evidence of quite a few wood fires around the site.

As we had planned what we were going to do for the few days that we were there, we didn't have any call to ask advice from the staff regarding local attractions - Beaulieu is excellent but very expensive, and the Otter and Owl Sanctuary at Ashurst is a much more financially viable alternative, full of cute native (and some not-so-native!) animals. I guess that on asking the staff would be able to provide information about nice walks in the area, but couldn't help but think that a good addition to the site would be handing out information on arrival about walks around the area, and direct from the campsite. We had a 1980s guide to the forest which provided a very nice walk from opposite the campsite to Lyndhurst and back, but there was acres of woodland around waiting to be explored given the right impetus.

Overall I would certainly recommend Hollands Wood, though if you're not one for children then try to make your visit outside of the school holidays as I imagine it gets packed in August. Remember your earplugs if you want an undisturbed night's sleep, and make sure you research some of the walks in the area, as they are not to be missed (Bolderwood, Rhinefield and Stoney Cross are all very nice). If you don't like queues, make sure you get to the showers early, and make sure you really heed the warnings about locking your food away! Oh, and check your tent for holes before you start out!

Have not long returned from this our favourite site in the New Forest. One thing that has changed since our last trip (2008) is the huge increase in re cycling facilities. This site has by far the most re cycling facilities I have ever encountered on a site anywhere. The normal glass and bottles, but the recycling bins are all over the site, including BBQ's and used batteries. I must add my bit to the very troublesome ponies that seem to have plagued this site this season. I was chatting to the staff who confirmed there have been a number of people kicked and bitten by the ponies this season. But I am happy to announce, that during our stay the troublesome ponies were removed from the site by the owners. On the light hearted side the staff had nicknamed on of the more bothersome brutes 'ASBO' (he has gone by the way). Don't let the reviews of the ponies put you off this fabulous site. The toilets are very well looked after and the staff are some of the friendliest and most helpful you will ever meet. We went on a Dusk Watch - one of the organised Ranger events at the site - Brilliant, every one should do it !

We came here on recommendation from two campers from the site we were on in Dorset the week before. Only stayed 2 nights on our way home and this is only our second camping experience in 30 yrs.

Loved the reception signing in very friendly and helpful. We set off to find our pitch, now having been camping on a slight slope we took our time in finding a lovely flat area, close to the 3rd utility block.

Having been advised about the pony raids, we witnessed one straight away, a young couple in a Teepee had a chestnut pony raiding their bread and crisps. Instantly we realised this was a real threat. Lots of Squirrels and Jackdaws, also capable of stealing food!

We kept food in sealed containers and locked everything away in the car that might attract prying noses. So we didn't have a problem

We were under an oak tree and had a couple of young families nearby.

The location is fantastic, the facilities are excellent, very good security all cars are checked in. Close by to Brockenhurst so you can walk to the shops if you wish about 1 mile. Loads of walking biking etc, we had our dog Monty with us so we had lots to do.

We found it a bit noisy as we were closer to the road, so definitely camp to the right as you enter the site (see other comments below). Few muddy puddles but nothing to bad.

We would return but only for 2 nights again.

Definitely a must for a family though, the kids were all quite rightly having a ball!

PS They do not freeze your ice packs but you can hire them, they also sell packs of ice cubes and will recharge small electrical items for you if you have the charger.

Very pretty site where you have the opportunity to choose where you pitch. The facilities provided are good with 3 toilet blocks that include showers, washing up facilities and laundrette. There was always plenty of hot water. Care needs to be taken to protect your property when the wild ponies are about looking for food but this seems to add charm to the site. As previously mentioned, it is best to keep away from the road side of the site where the traffic noise is not a problem. The only downside is the huge influx of weekend campers arriving on the Friday some of whom do not seem to have any consideration for others when it comes to keeping the noise down at night and keeping the facilities clean. The Forestry Commission charge well over the odds for this site and I do believe they should provide adequate supervision at night to improve the situation.

Had a brill time here. First 2 days were ruined due to heavy rain, so we had a little river under our ground sheet.

The facilities were fantastic toilets clean (all 3 blocks), plenty of bins scattered around, the dish washing part was always clean.

The only problem we had were with a particular pony which wouldn't leave as and others alone. All in all a fab week.

Good selection of activities in surrounding area like 'The Otter and Owl Wildlife Park', 'Paultons Park' and of course 'Beaulieu'.

Pubs/ resturants were good value for money especially 'The Rose and Crown' (come out of site turn left carry on that round for few hundred meters then on left) but make sure you book at weekends.

The location of the site did let it done a bit as whenever we went out towards the center of Lyndhurst there was always a traffic jam.

Fantastic location, nice short walk into the village centre where there is a tesco express and great pub near the railway crossing.

Staff all very friendly and only to happy to share info on where to visit.

Site is on a main road which may not be ideal for everybody but did not bother us too much.

When we arrived in a convoy of 8 adults (4 couples) we were asked to leave a £10 deposit per person as a behaviour bond, only to happy to do so if it means keeping the site pleasant for all users.

Facilities are all very lovely, showers nice temperature and clean. Toilet roll did run out both nights so come prepared!

We made a return visit to this wonderful campsite and managed to get the same pitch as last time. Again, the facilities were exceptional and not too much queuing involved for the showers. The washing up facilities are always busy, so having to wait a while was fine.

We had some heavy downpours and some of the pitches were flooded, so choose your pitch carefully.

There are plenty of bins for your rubbish, which is great as you must not leave any food around.

There is a local Tesco Express which is great for any forgotten supplies and a superb chip shop (not to be missed).

On a downside there was a MAJOR problem with a pack of 4 ponies, they were determined to take food from your pitch and refused to move if they didn't get anything, they became extremely violent and attacked people, I witnessed two of these attacks and was told of 2 more whilst I was there. Apparently this was caused by someone feeding them in the middle of the camp site the week before! People forget these are wild animals and should NOT be fed by campers. One holiday maker who works with horses offered to help round up these ponies, but the staff told him not to! This was appalling as everyone was on edge wondering what damage they would encounter with them and most importantly if they would get kicked by one of them!

The speed limits on the site really do need to be 'policed', it's very annoying trying to eat whilst people are hurtling past throwing up so much dust.

Apart from the ponies and dust, I will visit again but will definitely be more wary!
