3rd or 4th visit to Hollands Wood, appalling weather on Sat night so puddles appearing in unexpected spots a problem (i.E. Under part of our tent). Showers and toilets as clean as can be expected for a full site and had to wait once for a shower, but only for a few minutes. Was much quieter at night than when we've previously visited either because the wardens have got better at telling people off or because we were nearer the entrance than previously. Still my favourite New Forest camping site.

Arrived at site and was greeted by friendly staff, booking in should have been straight forward but the gizmo would not accept any of our plastic cards so had to pay cash. There are no set pitches (6 metres from nearest tent) so we where told to pitch anywhere but where advised to pitch facing the common for the views. The site is fairly flat and well drained the moles see to that.
Shower blocks are clean and tidy (only half open during our visit) never too crowded though, pot washing in adjacent block with plenty of hot water. Only trouble with the toilet blocks is the ponies like to use them as well so one needs a torch in the dark to avoid walking into the mess on a night-time visit.
On the subject of ponies they also like to have breakfast with you! There are signs all over the site informing people not to feed the ponies due to food attracting vermin.
Brockenhurst is a short walk away and has shops, bank, cafes and pubs, ice packs can be purchased from the campsite office.

We spent 3 nights at Hollands Wood and frankly, didn't want to leave. I had read all the reviews previously so felt confident booking in advance. Yes the staff are very friendly and helpful. Yes the 3 shower blocks are spotless and well managed with endless hot water and super showers/washing areas.
We arrived just after noon and found it very busy only just managing to find a spot large enough for our Hertford XXL, I suspect booking in advance is a must. The site is very well looked after. I saw litter-pickers working all day every day. But then it is a very large site.
This is a very beautiful site and we were blessed with super weather so we enjoyed some lovely walks in the forest and to Brockenhurst.
If I have a negative. It has to be the New Forest ponies. I had read about them 'gatecrashing' at meal times but that didn't prepare me for what we witnessed. The couple next to us had their tent completely trashed by two very aggressive, obviously hungry horses. A little worrying for us with 2 under fours only yards away! Just remember it's their home and they put up with us! If they can smell food when they are scavenging. They will go after it! We discovered that squirting water from a 'sport' bottle to be the best deterrent!
We can't wait to return. Water bottle at the ready!

This campground is well located to visit the New Forest.
Pleasant and professional as so often in Britain.
The campsite is a large part of a forest located between a road and a large meadow.
The locations are not defined, but outside the period of August this is not génant given the vastness of the terrain.
There is no outlet for car camping and caravans. We must therefore manage without.
Toilets, toilets, showers and devices for emptying the chemical toilets are at the top.
For the wastewater is less straightforward because the system of GB emptying directly into a tank through a grate is virtually no (as in France on the areas for CC, for example). We need a system of transfer roller. What the French did not always. But this is not blocking.
A very nice campsite in the forest near the town of Brockenhurst that offers everything one can do not need. :-)

Thought I put down some thoughts on our trip to Holland’s wood.
Booking in was great staff were friendly and helpful quick to find my details and advised me that I could pick my pitch.
Concerns were raised when I was told that there were a number of broody mares around and to keep out the way and to keep the kids in check as a couple of children had been kicked, that day. Mine are three and seven so I thought it should be OK. We were also warned about horses breaking in to tents for food but thought this was a bit extreme. Did see a horse lift the side of a tent to get its cornflakes though!
Found a pitch and after the previous days down pour the ground had dried quickly.
The toilet blocks were clean and modern with plenty of washing up facilities.
Unfortunately that was the end of our stay as my little girl caught her finger in the door of the toilet block and we had to take her to hospital.
I am disappointed at the support of the site staff who although said I could leave my tent up until we got her sorted, made no effort to take any details.
So over all site was fine and as described open to the forest with horses wandering through it, but a few hazards I was not expecting.

We camped here in June 2009. When we arrived the wardens on duty were very friendly. Since it was mid-week we were told we could pitch anywhere but to allow ample space between campsites.
First off, the positives:
- the staff
- campers were good at leaving space so you weren't too close to anyone else
- ponies and cows walk freely throughout the campsite (very cool but you really have to be sure all food is stored in either the car or in coolboxes where they can't smell it)
- some beautiful walks in the New Forest (it felt like we had the forest to ourselves as no other campers seemed to be doing so)
- quick walk (about 10 minutes) into Brockenhurst where there are several pubs and easy to stagger back to the campsite
- quick drive to Brockenhurst or Lyndhurst to pick up essentials (ice, eggs, etc)
- plenty of shower/toilet blocks and mainly clean
Now the only negative
- the grounds should close sections off for a year to give the grass a chance to grow. We drove around the site a few times to find a place to pitch that wasn't too dirt exposed (grassy parts). In the end we found a patch with a little bit of grass but mostly dirt. When it was time to leave, it had STORMED the night before and our tent was surrounded in puddles and mud.
We don't have children but noticed there is no 'play' area. BUT this is the New Forest and kids should be taking walks through the Forest and enjoying what it has to offer.

We arrived after a bout of heavy rain, whilst it was still drizzling. The staff were on hand with our passes and map of site and local places. It was very busy, and full to those that hadn't booked, not that it felt that way.
This was my first time, so the other half chose the pitch (a good choice too). After pitching we found the Tesco express which was about 1 mile away and stocked up.
No bbq's are allowed unless they are off the ground, so take a couple of bricks!
The toilet facilities were EXCELLANT every time I visited they were clean and tidy, the showers were superb, and I didn't have to wait once, except to wash up but that I can cope with.
Definately a place to visit whether your a seasoned camper or new to the camping world, this site was good for families, and couples

We've now stayed at each of the three big Forestry Commission New Forest sites - Holmsley, Roundill and Hollands Wood - so I thought I'd compare them.
This site was full the weekend we stayed as the others each had been, but arriving at mid-afternoon on Friday, we had the choice of several nice pitches, and even later in the weekend, there still seemed to be some choice - certainly it felt less obviously crowded than Holmsley when that was full.
This site is dispersed among the trees. In that respect it's like bits of both Roundhill and Holmsley, but both of those have large areas which are basically just one open field, whereas Hollands Wood only has a couple of moderate size open areas and the great majority of pitches are in among the trees (which suits us).
It does seem to have more of a drainage problem. But the wet and muddy bits seem very local and dependent on small slopes and dips of the ground - there were dry pitches and muddy pitches right next to each other.
All three sites feature New Forest ponies but they seemed more brazen at Hollands Wood, walking through the site every morning at breakfast time to see what food they could get hold of. The wardens aren't joking when they tell you not to leave food in the tent!
In terms of location, all three feature cycling and walking on forest tracks from the doorstep. Hollands Wood is the closest to a village, but Holmsley is significantly closer to a beach than the other two. Holmsley has a decent shop including forzen meals they'll cook for you, the other two no shop or only a small one.
Finally, Hollands Wood seemed quieter, perhaps a consequence of the dispersal among the trees. But a group next to us were being a bit noisy at 2 am(stag party ariving back from a cyclist's pub crawl though that makes it sound worse than it was) and the warden came along umprompted by us to ask them to be quiet, then came back the next morning to apologise to us, which (a) was very friendly and (b) may indicate they are hotter on controlling noise than some.
Our choice: for atmosphere, peace and relaxation, Hollands Wood; for family convenience with smaller children, Holmsley.

Spent 2 nights here on a Sunday and Monday in the first half of June. It was raining when we arrived and many of the pitches were full of puddles but it's a large wooded campsite and with a little perseverence we found a fairly dry pitch under a big tree just as the rain eased of and the sun came out. From then on the site dried quite rapidly.
The site is beautiful, set in woods with some open glades and a very large grassy meadow area to one side.
If you love the animals of the New Forest you'll love it here with the forest horses and ponies as regular visitors to the site.Even the cattle from the meadows pass theough the edge of the site to overnight in the woods.
Because of this, keep your food sealed unless you want squirrels raiding your tent and the local ponies putting there heads through your tent door!
The toilet/shower blocks are the best I've been too and with 3 large blocks the site is well served. Especially clever is that rather than close a block in quieter periods, half of each block can be shut but with no loss of facilities and no extra trek to the next nearest block.
Downsides? Well the site is next to a fairly busy road and it would be untrue to say you can't hear the traffic over a great deal of the site.Try the Northeast corner of the site if you want to be furthest from the road.Right next to Balmer Lawn meadow.
There's plenty of walking and cycling in the area and Brockenhurst (less than a mile away)is very pretty with cattle and horses wandering through many of it's street and lanes, often near the several fords. There's enough shops and pubs and it has it's own railway station too.
It's also handy for Lymington and the Isle of Wight ferry if you want a 2 centre holiday like we did.
And the campsite staff? Really friendly, quite a few of them seem to like the Foresters Arms near the station for an after work drink after we visited it on their recommendation.

Have just returned from a weekend at this beautiful site ran from Thursday to Sunday. I agree wholeheartedly with all the previous reviews. This is a super site where the facilities provided are excellent and staff work very hard to maintain them. Upon arrival we had plenty of choice regarding location and we found a lovely peaceful spot near the open field at the back, with ponies and their foals grazing. However the following day the site started to fill up and some of these campers do not have any consideration for other campers and certainly took no notice of the 6 metre rules of the site.
It was also noticed that previously well kept toilets and showers were something else when the weekender's arrived. Toilet paper, some of it soiled, all over the floor and shower cubicles filthy after use, surely these campers could leave them as they found them. Makes you wonder what their homes are like.
Apart from above had a super time and would not allow this to put me off returning soon.
