Mayday Bank Holiday Weekend We also read the reviews before going to this site and decided that as we would like to stay up a bit later we'd camp by the road. As it had been raining pretty much all Friday the ground had very soggy patches but luckily the fallen leaves on the ground meant it wasn't all muddy so we found a nice (dryish) pitch nearest the road but also near enough to the far toilet block for those night-time visits! The noise from the road wasn't intrusive at all, and as someone else mentioned, you completely forgot about it until you listened for it (although the odd noisy lorry did go past). It was great camping between the trees at this site and the toilet blocks / showers were nice. There is a nice big field on the other side of the site where we went for a kick about (there were also people flying kites and riding bikes) and wild ponies over the back. Now, whatever you do, make sure you put your rubbish bags in the bin area each evening otherwise you will find yourself woken by a wild pony trying to chew your rubbish! This site makes a nice change from camping in open fields and I would definately go there again, although not in my own car as the speed bumps are a bit severe and would have had my exhaust for breakfast! All in, a very nice site, with nice toilets and wasn't too busy when we were there, even though the 'full' sign was up there was plenty of room for everyone. A walk down the road leads you to some nice pubs, a chippy and a decent shop. The train station is also walking distance.

April/May 2004 To every potential Hollands Wood camper,
I read the reviews on Hollands Wood prior to us leaving for our camping trip, some were good some were poor, but they gave us an idea of what to expect.
We had a combination of rain and sunshine all weekend, so my review is not biased in any way due to the weather.
We arrived to an unwelcoming team at the front desk (Reception). It was like an interrogation interview when I said I had received no tickets or information in the post (I booked and paid by telephone). I just assumed it was booked full stop. They asked me about fifteen questions – some of which include:
- Who did I speak to? - What number did I ring? - What date did I book on?
I then asked if I was on their computer system, then they decided to check and low and behold I was there………what was the problem, was the interrogation necessary? As you can imagine I was fuming and it already set me off on the wrong footing for the weekend.
But the anger soon fizzled away as we drove around in search of our idyllic stop, our first impressions were ‘fantastic’, it was so calm and peaceful and as an added bonus there were animals everywhere.
All the facilities on the site were clean and tidy, especially the showers – they were boiling hot hot!
Some of the reviews we read mentioned the adjacent road, well we were close enough and we didn’t find it any bother, its only if you concentrate and listen – then it sounds quite loud. If you were drinking beer, sitting around a charcoal filled miniature chiminea (Safeways £20, bargain!) and listening to a bit of music, then the noise of the road is non-exitent.
There was one thing that annoyed us, and may well be of interest to you readers. We picked up a few leaflets that were displayed on reception - to seek out the best activities in the area. We selected the ‘Walking with Ramblers’ excursion, a strenuous 10-mile forest walk. It said on the leaflet to book over the telephone – so we rang……………..and rang………………..and rang and left messages of course. When I told the receptionist, he said the offices were only open business hours, as it was the Forestry Commission.
What in gods name is that all about……………….how are you supposed to book these excursions if you go down for the weekend and pick up leaflets like we did. Of course this has nothing to do with Hollands Wood.
Overall I would give Hollands Wood 4 out of 5, the campsite and facilities are outstanding. To anybody thinking of staying at Hollands Wood………..go for it, its fantastic, it’s not everyday you get to eat your breakfast with the horses and ponies.

11th-14th August Hollands Wood is a lovely site, in the heart of the New Forest. you are surrounded by trees wherever you look. We loved having the ponies and a herd of cows visiting us every day and yes they do come close to the tents and caravans, but never to close for comfort and even if they did they walk away as soon as you move near to them anyway!!
We really loved our stay here and the only real downside I could find was the fact that there really are not enough toilets and showers available for the 600+ pitches. On a plus side though, it was nice to be able to pitch our tent anywhere and found this lovely little spot not too far away from the loos but far enough and it was very private as we had bushes all around us and no one in clear view which was lovely and very unlike the other sites we visted on our week long holiday this year.
Would truely recommend this site and we are definately going to go back next year :o)

May 2003 We arrived to a really frosty and unhelpful welcome at the reception area - not great on only our first camping trip since school days (which were a long time ago!).
However, once we settled in we were very impressed by the site - great for cycling with small children and fantastic cycling off site - miles and miles of car free tracks.
The ponies were beautiful. We all felt relaxed very quickly and the kids had plenty of other children to play games with.
We went with a large group of friends and were able to find a pitch large enough to house us all together.
The trees make it seem very cosy - I imagine that would be a big bonus when it is very windy or very hot.
Don't know how to rate it out of ten - I'll let you know when we've been to more campsites. Put it this way, it hasn't put us off the idea of camping even though you do have to wait a long time to get a sink to do your washing up in! (I guess you have to have something to look forward to back at home - the dishwasher!)I wouldn't rule out going back there, but probably will not as we want to try as many different campsites as possible.

August 2003 A very good campsite, with shade areas in the trees just right in the heatwave that we have just had. Shower & toilet blocks very clean and spaced out within the campsite.

July 2003 All the other comments ring true!! However, spent probably the wettest week in July here. At one point our tent was surrounded by a lake. The ground is not level and is definitely not well drained. The launderette does not have enough dryers to cope with the volume of people on this site and with 2 small children who were almost always muddy, this was an important area of the campsite. We did find a secret launderette at the bottom of the campsite, only to find all this was out of order too! On a sunny day if you can find a pitch away from the busy road, fairly level, with grass not mud, I would imagine it could be good. The kids love riding around on their bikes and there are plenty of trails around too. Make sure all your food is in plastic boxes as those ponies will eat anything, wrappers and all. There is an excellent camping shop in Lyndhurst where we purchased plenty of solid rock pegs for the stony ground and wellies all round. You'll be lucky if you catch me camping in the near future it was such an experience!

25th to 28th July Had a great weekend in the New Forest despite the worst rainfall this year. Out first time out as a family camping. Site is great - clean, spacious, picturesque, uncommercial...
Agree with many of the comments above ie keep to right of the site away from the road;middle toilet block is very busy; Ponies do roam through the site though no bad expereiences with them (we really enjoyed their company) Heavy rain does seem to remain on the site for some time and if you pitch in hte wrong place you could get wet.
Would recommend the Hare and Hounds at Sway (about 3 miles away). Very good food, value for money and a good pint of 6X.
Another Pub, The Filly Inn for breakfast was distinctly average. Wouldnt recommend at all.
Rose and Crown in Brocklehurst was OK and within walking ditance. A bit 'chain pub food' but predictable and safe.
Chippy next to Local Shop on main road good (can you tell we had no cooking facilities).
Had a great day out at Christchurch. Park near the Quay and catch the ferry to Mudeford Beach. Train ride if you like (we didnt) or just play in the beach.
Overall a lovely site and we would thoroughly recommend to anyone - unless you want nightly entertainement in a club house.

July 2003 The site is stunningly beautiful with wild ponies wondering around and plenty of shade in the trees. The toilet/shower block was absolutely spotless and the staff were very welcoming and friendly.
The site was “full” but there was plenty of room, we chose a quiet spot where we had almost total privacy. Other campers were friendly and the site was excellently maintained. There was absolutely no litter anywhere!
I think this is an excellent choice – we went with a family group of 11 including children as young as 3 and they just loved it. If you get a chance go to Lymington market on Saturday, it is based around the high street and had FREE parking. We were well impressed with it.
Two “bad” things – The site is massive so it can be a bit of a challenge to make it to the loo when you are busting, so you may wish to make sure you pitch near the loo block. Also avoid the left hand side as there is a constant amount of road noise (we were very close to the road but it didn’t bother us at all but I can understand how it could bother some)
In summary – excellent 10 / 10 ! (and I don’t usually give any site this rating!)

July 2003 A lovely, picturesque, clean and tidy, campsite with all facilities you could need... I arrived on Thursday lunchtime and found it very easy to find a secluded pitch... there is a busy road which runs alongside, but if you pitch further into the woods you can hardly hear it. The New Forest ponies come onto the site and wander around freely, and if you are in one of the secluded areas on the edge of the campsite you may be fortunate enough to see deer grazing very early in the morning or very late at night... beautiful.
One slight downside... there is no noise curfew, and on Friday night, when the site became very busy, some kind souls decided that the entire campsite would appreciate listening to their "music" at 11.45pm... completely shattering the peace and quiet!
Despite that small fault, I loved my short stay there... and am indeed going back in a few weeks time...
9.5/10... introduce a music curfew and I'd give it 11/10!

June 2003 Spent a thoroughly enjoyable weekend here. We pitched tents at the bottom of the site and on the right hand side. As such did not really notice the car noise too much.
The site was busy (full on Saturday night) but I was amazed at how cosiderate the people in the area we pitched were and the noise after 11pm was negligable.
Would I go again - yes. It seemed like all the ponies knew that people would be leaving on the Sunday at around 12. At this stage they returnned from teh forest and came very close to the cars etc to have a rummage through the packed (nose) bags.
