There are no hook-ups or marked out pitches here. You find space and move in, recognising the 6m space that must be left to your nearest neighbour.

Neither is there a shop. These should not be seen as negatives as it fits perfectly with the rural feel of the lovely location, nestling among trees on the edge of a vast open area. It's just a 30min walk or 15min cycle ride from Brockenhurst, which does include some of the busy A337, but this is manageable with care using the footpaths. In the village there are a number of good pubs, eating places and shops.

The site facilities are ample and clean, even though the site is very busy during school holidays. Showers etc are free and there's a metered laundry if required.

Walking and cycling from site is easy, and there are many way-marked circuits on good gravel paths.

The open top bus picks-up a short distance from site and can be recommended as a means of getting a good look around. At £10 each, it's not cheap, but you can get on and off where you like and there are 2 loops crossing over at Lyndhurst, so you can explore the whole of the New Forest this way.

Big site surrounded by Woodlands, it has plenty of space for groups meeting up, as we did.

The toilet and shower block was good, nice and clean with plenty of toilet cubicles. The showers were too small to take a toddler in with you and stay dry on getting out, but we managed in the spacious sink area.

As with other Forestry campsites we've stayed in, the terrain is hit and miss but there are plenty of flatter sections. The only downside is that they are mostly next to the road that goes through the site (not a public road), which was fairly busy with campers coming and going while we were there, so not ideal for younger children.

We didn't explore much of the surrounding areas, but the short walk we did highlighted what a stunning location this was and the kids all loved the wild ponies (and the adults!).

There was also a small playpark but more suited to older children as ours were all 3 and under, nice to have though.

The chap who welcomed us was very friendly.

Huge site but don't be put off by that, well organised at reception and plenty of staff available to assist so speedy check in. You are allowed to pitch anywhere, there are no electric hookup facilities. Pitches are not marked out.

The site is located near a busy road and you can hear the traffic noise at night, as well as the railway, this doesn't put us off and I would always pitch further from the road as I could.

Facilities are in 3 blocks. We stayed nearest to the 3rd block, we camped the 1st weekend of the school holidays and the site was full. We didn't need to queue for showers but did have to queue for washing up! The showers and toilets were not kept as clean as my last visit to this site and this is the only thing that I think could be improved upon.

There is no shop, the reception sell a few bits, (ice) and have freezer packs to hire. There is no playground, but there is huge open space for kids to play ball games, investigate and trail. An ice cream van visits every day and prices are reasonable.

The surrounding area is beautiful, ponies roam freely and as such you need to be careful not to leave any food accessible.

There is a small Tesco in Brockenhurst, quite a few shops, restaurants and pubs, also the train station for traveling further afield.

Definitely worth a visit is the stream, kids can play for hours with nets fishing.

We've just spent 9 nights at Hollands Wood and have left feeling a little disappointed.

No marked out pitches was a difficulty for us on arrival. We have an outwell Vermont tent and were told to drive around to find a pitch when we arrived. This sounded fine but finding a free good sized, flatish pitch was hard. As was finding grass! Many had to pitch close to neighbours because of generally poor and extremely hard ground. Rock pegs needed! We ended up on a dirt and twigs.

We personally felt that less pitches would be more appropriate for the site and most importantly for the facilities. NOT adequate when the camp was full. In the mornings no toilet paper and queues for mens toilets, showers and washing up facilities was routine.

We were expecting a 'peaceful' site as advertised. NO. The site is adjacent to a very busy road traffic noise 24hrs a day and LOUD!I'm a deep sleeper and was still disturbed.

Large groups being allowed on site had its usual problems and late night hilarity. At 3am this becomes less amusing, especially as the traffic starts at 4am! This is to be expected on sites that tolerate this behaviour. There was obviously no policing of noise on site.

Ponies walking through the site was amusing, they're not shy! Lock up your stuff!

Ice pack service was awful. Having camped a lot with freezers provided, this site rent their blocks out. £1. 50 initial [for 1 small block] then 50p for a replacement. I needed 4 a day. A bit of a rip off I thought.

On the other side of the coin, the location within the New Forest was very good / central. Brockenhurst village was pleasant when on foot. The Indian restaurant was good, Yengs chinise- excellent hostess and the 3 local pubs great.

The Village Butchers are a must, they make their own kebabs, sausage [wild boar and apple fabulous!] and other BBQ treats. They boxed us up our selection with a big ice block for us to collect at the end of a hot day. Great Service, great BBQ!

We went on a Dusk walk with one of the Forest Rangers, it was enjoyable but expensive for what it was - £17 2 adults/1 kid. We luckily only had 7 people on our walk but were informed 25 to 40 people were usually present.

In all we wouldn't re-visit the site at the height of the summer. It's a shame, this location could be superb, it's just being milked for all it can give at the moment. The pitches need improving /repairing alittle and then marking out.

Just back from a 5 day trip to Hollands Wood with 3 adults and 2 children. Campsite is absolutely lovely - in a surrounding of trees which is very picturesque. There is a huge paddock on one side of the site which is a wonderful play area for the kids (which they loved), not to mention the wild horses and cows that roam freely through the paddock and campsite. There is also a stream very close by which was extremely popular with all of the kids.

The facilities are excellent however the only slight problem we encountered was that they were only cleaned once a day. Given the campsite was fully booked and the busiest time of year, the bathrooms did become rather messy rather quickly. People need to be a little more considerate and clean up after themselves better in order to do their bit to keep it clean.

Brockenhurst is very close and within both walking and cycling distance. There is no need to cycle on the busy road as there is a footpath that goes from the campsite to the town. There are very good pubs with lovely food and a tesco which is well stocked for most supplies. Lyndhurst is very close also and there is a camping store for which you can get gas cannister replacements if needed.

Would highly recommend Hollands Wood and look to return next summer!

Unfortunately its not been too good for us. We are a young couple and was after a chill out break. The toilet blocks are good although very busy at the peak times. The site is set in nice woodland but beware the wild horses!

Our first night we couldn't sleep due to a rowdy family and screaming kids up all night. This was the same the second night. On the second day our tent was torn and smashed from the horses trying to get in while we were out(we had to bin the tent) Third night the rowdy family had left only to be replaced by three familys all camping together. Shouting and mobile phones ringing all night. We left a day early as we were shattered and fed up. Maybe we were just unlucky this time but we wont be going back.

Just had our 9th visit here in 15 years. We love the site, but agree with others that Forest Holidays are now allowing too many onto the site at peak times; you can spend over 40 mins looking for a decent pitch and many are prone to serious puddles/flooding when it rains - though you wouldn't necessarily spot that when pitching.

The facilities are fairly basic, hot showers etc - but you have to mop before you leave. We don't mind that because the scenery and access to local amenities are second to none.

The pitches are all dotted about the wood, with a lovely mix of old and young (mostly deciduous) trees. The site is not small (it's almost a mile from top to bottom), but once you've pitched you don't feel like you're surrounded by 600 + other pitches.

Must re-iterate that Forest holidays should limit numbers to make it more enjoyable. They must be making a fortune out of this site. Alongside the wood is a huge, grassed clearing, where you can go and play with the kids, take an early morning walk among the ponies etc.

Anyone who complains about the ponies should just go elsewhere, if you keep food out of sight/smell and don't go too close, they are absolutely fine.

There are several forest tracks directly out of the site, you're close to Brockenhurst village (about 15mins walk depending how far up the campsite you are pitched) with a small but efficient Tesco, several pubs (Rose & Crown - slow service, expensive for what's basically pub grub; the Snakecatcher - good food, service and decent value, and the Forester's arms - basic but good) and an Italian, Chinese, Indian, French and English restaurant (can't comment on any of those has never managed to fit them in).

The campsite has direct access to the forest, including some main cycle tracks. Take a cycle ride to the Oak at Bank (from Brockenhurst village it's a slow, steady climb, but coming back is easy and very beautiful); to the Drift Inn at Beaulieu Road station or up to Lyndhurst (where going in a car would be mad - it's a complete bottleneck). There are many lovely walks in the area and you can try canoeing, riding etc at a couple of places within a short drive from the site. The countryside varies from the beautiful forest trees, to breathtaking heathland, covered mauve with heather and peppered with ponds and lakes.

Highly recommended.

Lovely, scenic campsite with New Forest ponies ambling around. Lots of cycle hire shops and even one company which will deliver and collect from the site. Maps are provided of the picturesque cycle routes. Only 10mins walk into the pretty village of Brockenhurst, with a Tesco and some nice looking pubs. The facilities were very clean. Very family orientated so womens bathrooms in particular very busy and a queue around meal times for the washing up area. Only con is that the campsite is long, narrow and parallel to an A road. Traffic can be heard throughout the night which somewhat mars the tranquillity but should only really bother the lightest of sleepers.

We stayed here for a weekend, just my husband and I and had a lovely relaxing weekend.

The site was very busy, and we had a stressful half an hour upon arrival trying to find somewhere suitable to pitch our tent that wasn't right next to the road or crossing guy ropes with another unit. We did manage to find a nice spot, and found the site to be lovely, with good views of open fields and horses and ponies.

The toilet and shower blocks were always clean and although the site was busy, there was never a queue. You can also use a hairdryer for 20p, which was really handy as there is no EHU on site.

As mentioned before, it does run alongside a busy road, and this is quite noisy if you are pitched alongside it, but further into the site it's not really a problem.

We had a lovely stroll across fields and a small section of road to Brockenhurst and the pubs there are great for enjoying a drink or two.

All in all, a lovely site which I would return to, but I would recommend getting there early.

This is one of my favourite place to go camping my family and I love the area there is lots to see and do and not to far from the major towns jump on the motorway and you can be in Bournemouth or Southampton. We loved brockenhurst and lyndhurst they had everything you needed.

The campsite itself was lovely clean and safe great size pitches and amazing wild horses roaming.

The toilets and laundry facilities where very well laid out. Our kids loved the bike ride through the forest to the next town we hired some bikes which where delivered to us on site then collected the next day and the forest trail went right from the site.

The only thing was the main road you get of to enter the site very busy fast road. But this has not put us off coming again that's for sure.

This was a basic minimal site but that is what we as a family prefer rather than commercial sites.

We can not wait to return again
