Our visit in June this year was our third - we'd been twice last year. It is a fabulous site.
It is best to pre-book as it speeds up things when you arrive. You just pick where you want to camp - there are no allocated pitches. We always choose to find a pitch to the right of the road after reading other reviews about the noise from the main road and have never had any problems as a result.
The site is lovely; plenty of trees, ponies walking through and we've always managed to find a good spot, even when it's been busy. We do though try to get there by early afternoon on Friday to ensure we have a good choice before the Friday evening arrivals.
The facilities last year were fine, but it was great to see them re-furbished this year. Very pleased with them; some of the best we've experienced, and we've never had any problems with queues(we have never been during school holidays though). The blocks are also centrally situated so few have far to walk.
It is a great site to stay on if you want to cycle. There are paths from the site, and plenty all around. If you don't have your own, you can rent them in Brockenhurst. One tip if you have need to store your bikes cycle overnight and don't have room in your tent - find a pitch with a slim tree you can lock them to! There are plenty of them, but might be something extra to look for when finding the best pitch for you. We always cycle to Bucklers Hard which is a beautiful place. It's a lovely cycle ride with only the odd hill to cope with. There is a great pub en route at East Boldre called the Turfcutters Arms. It's a lovely old pub with a gorgeous beer garden serving a range of tasty ploughman's lunches.
It's possible to stay until late afternoon on check-out day - I think the fee is about £3 and you can stay until 5pm.
In summary, the site is just great - beautiful and well located. The only downside I can think of is that the ground can in places be rather uneven and can get rather bare come September time. Overall though it is brilliant for both adults and children and we can't wait to go back.

Best site we have ever visited.
The setting is tranquil despite being a large site you are left to choose your own pitch and we have never felt over crowded.
You have to be aware of the new forest ponies as they can cause damage to the tents but if sensible this can be avoided and the ponies just add to the wonderful atmosphere this campsite has.
The toilet blocks are adequate a little dated but always clean.
Lots to do in the area.
Its pure escapism. Loved it. Thoroughly recommend a holiday here

We really loved this campsite, probably the best we have stayed at so far. We had a fantastic pitch amongst the trees overlooking a large open space which was home to dozens of ponies and quite a few cows, all of whom made themselves at home amongst the tents and made us feel like we were really part of their environment. The staff here were extremely helpful and welcoming. You don't get allocated a pitch, you just drive around until you find a spot you like and pitch up, as long as you're not too near another tent. The toilets and showers were newly refurbished and excellent. Brockenhurst is only about 10 minutes walk away and there are loads of footpaths and cycle routes directly out of the campsite so if you have a dog it's pretty near perfect. This site was excellent value for money and somewhere we will return to again and again.

I have just returned from a two night stay at Hollands Wood and had a great time. The site is lovely - set right in the heart of the New Forest. On arrival, the warden who greeted us saw that we had small children with us and directed us to a spot so that we would have excellent views of the cows and ponies. There's nothing quite like unzipping your tent and seeing ponies and cows grazing. Also nothing quite like setting up while a cow comes to see what's what!
The site's facilities were great. Very clean and strategically placed to avoid overly long walks (a boon when you have a 23month old wearing her sleeping bag on her back, wellies and sunglasses and walking to the toilet with you on that first thing in the morning dash!) We didn't have to queue for toilets, showers or washing up once and everything was pristine when we used them. I didn't spot any baby changing facilities at either of the shower blocks that I went to and trying to shower a baby wasn't huge fun!
The wardens, while keen to aid us, were less than helpful whenever I asked for help e.G. Info on pony riding in the local area, weather report for the day, bricks to lift a BBQ off the floor (so take / have access to everything you need before you go) although they were able to give me one ice block when I requested some. Oh and nobody seems to check the 6m rule; although we were reminded of it when we checked in, we returned from our first day out and another tent was pitched within 2m of our own. I did see a warden cycling around, but he didn't say anything.
The local village is Lyndhurst and this has a great camping shop (ideal to pick up BBQ stuff / supplies when the sun finally came out)a Budgens for basics and a FANTASTIC chip shop, which coped admirably with the influx of campers when the heavens opened (one lady was placing 17 orders and they served her and everyone else in record time). A twenty minute drive away takes you to Burley Village, very cute if a little touristy and has a great pub for lunches and dinners.
It was fantastic being able to let the children just run off and play on the heath opposite our tent and we will definitely be going back.

This is an excellent site, the toilet blocks are nice and clean all the time, the pitches are nice and spacious and the staff are courteous and helpful, we weren't disappointed at all with our week there, we only wish we were there longer. The ponies roaming around at their own pace was amazing and very funny at times especially when one family were trying to sort their tent out but couldn't because a pony was peering inside their tent window
The villages were close at hand and all that we needed was within a 10 minute walk, a little drive would take us to Lyndhurst which had some lovely shopping for the Mrs and a cracking Ferrari and Maserati dealership for me and my son to drool through the windows at and wish for that lottery win
All round a truly excellent holiday and we are already booking next year

Just back from hollands wood, and had a great week, it was the 1st week of the school holidays and the ste was fully booked, but still managed to find a pitch no problem,
Some areas under trees and others out in the open, a great back to nature camping trip, with the ponies and cows roaming around, looked up from cooking breakfast one morning to be greeted by a lick from a huge cow, gosh their quiet and sneak up you lol.
Wardens were great, and the loos were spotless, only a few queues . Not bad for a full site off 600 pitches.
Going back in 4 weeks time, the sites great for cycling too, 2 routes out into the forest from the site. Great site highly recommended

Have just returned from a two nights stay at Hollands Woods campsite, and I cannot wait to go back next year.
The campsite was fantastic, it was fully booked when we arrived however we managed to still find a nice pitch in the centre of the woods.
The toilet and shower blocks were kept very clean and regularly checked and topped up with toilet roll. Never had to que for the showers which was very good considering the site was fully booked.
At night the noise was kept to a minimum by everyone so not a problem if you are going there with children.
Loved the horses and ponies that wondered round the campsite, they are not a problem at all if you leave them to it.
The local town, Brockenhurst is about 1/2 mile down the road. It's along a busy road however there is a footpath so it is quite safe.
The staff where very friendly and gave out free dog poo bags on arrival! and maps of the local area and rules within the campsite.
Absolutely superb campsite and will deffinately be going back.

We stayed at this site whilst the New Forest show was on (opposite the campsite) so it was quite busy but still managed to find our own quiet pitch.
Most pitches are amongst the trees with a few on open grass areas.
Showers and toilets were clean and spacious but could do with a few more hooks to put your things.
Although the site is close to the road, traffic noise was minimal.
A short walk into Brockenhurst with a Tescos, cashpoint and the best fish and chip shop I have ever been to!
The river between the site and the village proved very popular with families. A great spot for picnics.
Staff, friendly, helpful and efficient.

After reading many of the reviews of this site, which were very helpful - thanks, we have just returned from a week at Hollands Wood. The site is run very well, facilities are clean, staff very helpful (went out of their way to try and find a charger for my mobile which died on the second day, they'll charge your phone for 50p).
The comments I read on this site are very accurate: it can get busy, the nearby road is fairly noisy even on the right hand side but we found all these things were completely outweighed, for us, by the good things about Hollands Wood. The setting is beautiful, being in such close proximity to the ponies and watching them get on with their thing, is a great to experience. The kids loved climbing the trees and flying their kites on the common next to the site. There is much to explore nearby too.
We will definitely be back at some point soon and I would recommend this site, especially midweek or out of season.

This was our first family camping trip with 3 boys (7, 4 & 2), and we all throughly enjoyed it. Having been in the scouts etc while growing up, I loved the idea of my boys experiencing camping.
We weren't disappointed, we booked in advance as it was the 1st weekend of the school summer holiday, and we arrived the site was fully booked. You are left to find your own pitch, you just have to try and find a space whilst giving your neighbours room as well. This isn't a problem really, you just need keen eyesight and to be realistic about what 6m is (just about 20 feet).
The whole campsite is very well maintained, and the ponies roam in and out as they see fit, which is beautiful to see, and the boys loved to be so close to foals and mummy ponies. The toilets and showers were very clean and well maintained (as has been mentioned before), which is why we went to this campsite.
The staff are friendly, and there is no such thing as a stupid question, and they also freeze blocks for cool box's (you have to rent their ones for £1 + 30p freezing charge)
The area towards the meadow is good for kids, they can play cricket, rounders etc etc and when its getting dark, you can watch the moon rise over the trees.
Brockenhurst is only a short drive/walk away for pubs shops etc, and there is a camping shop in Lyndhurst that is open 7 days, if you forgot anything(like we did ! ;-)
All in all we didn't have 1 complaint, and the 3 nights (4 days) we had, felt like we had taken a week off, and we are already planning our next trip back in 4 weeks.
