This is a very beautiful site under the trees, with ponies and cattle as well as a variety of bird-life to observe. You can pitch where you like, as long as you're 20 feet away from anyone else, so at busy times you might need to drive around to find a suitable pitch. The whole time we were there the FULL sign was up at the entrance, and it didn't get overcrowded. The showers did have long queues in the mornings though, but there was plenty of hot water and you don't have to pay extra. The washing up facilities were a little cramped. The shop has long opening hours, and sells bread, milk, tent pegs and freezer packs. Brockenhurst is a mile or so away where there is a Tescos Extra for more varied provisions, which is open from 7 til 10. This site is ideally located for a family holiday, nearby attractions including Beaulieu, which is a day out in itself, plus Buckler's Hard historic shipbuilding village, and Exbury Gardens. Lymington with its ferries to the Isle of Wight is a short drive away, and it's not far to the border with Dorset. It's a good idea if you can to avoid driving through Lyndhurst, which is a bit of a bottle neck.

The site was fully booked the weekend we where there but it didn't seem overcrowded, considering the weather it was lovely under the cool of the tree's. Great site for children, nice walk over fields to the village about a 15 min stroll. Noted a small stream where the children where paddling. Easy to get to the other villages, noticed an open topped bus which did a tour around all the villages. If there is a downside the noise from the main road, could be heard even when moved farthest away from it. The toilets where fine whilst we where there Overall a nice place for a short break if you like the comfort of electric hook up it's not for you, as it is back to nature all quite by 11pm.

We have stayed at other sites in the Forest but this was our first time at Hollands Wood which was recommended by friends. Members of our group had a dog so we needed a dog friendly site (although there are areas which exclude dogs, so best of both worlds). The site is huge & I agree with other reviews about there not being enough facilities. We were close to the start of the site and the nearest facilities only had 3 showers and about 6 loos in each side. They were a bit old fashioned but always clean and the water, if anything, was a bit too hot, especially for my 2 year old. I tried not to use the showers (free, always a good thing) at peak times so did not have to queue & never needed to queue for a loo which was fortunate as my son was being potty trained at the time! The stand pipes seemed to be a bit few & far between but that may have been down to our location rather than throughout the site as a whole. The site was full when we were there, & like another reviewer, our site was taken before we had fully packed up. Being in a group, we were lucky that we had arrived on Thursday as I'm not sure that we would have got 4 pitches together, particularly with the 6 metre rule which was mainly adhered to. If you like wooded sites then this would be the place for you. I personally prefer a more open site without lots of shade and tree roots. Having said that, it is a good site if a bit bumpy and the field/moor is great for older children to explore and play on (it was relatively dry due to the lack of rain this year). It is a noisy site due to the road, train line, and low flying aircraft. I cannot say that I got a good night's sleep in the 3 nights we stayed. There is not a lot of other noise as most of the campers are very considerate & quiet late at night and before 8am. Even though we were surrounded by dogs, I did not hear a single one barking! The staff were very friendly and helpful. Lots of wildlife to keep the children amused although don't let them touch! All in all a nice site that we would return to if we went again with friends with a dog.

I have been to this site regularly now for the last 5 years. Absolutely love it. We camp a lot as a family and this is the only site in the uk that the children beg to return to. Although it is a huge site, it feels very calm and quiet. This year we brought all our friends with us too and the have all now vowed to return too.
As for the floodings, we did have an incident a few years ago, when we ended up having to dig trenches in the middle of the night. Not pleasant. But since then have chosen our spots better. You can see where the site is wet .Also as you dont have obvious pitches it is easier to find a dry spot.
I was at the site in May this year (Half term week)and I must say the toilets were fine on the days we were there. And as a rule I have never felt that the site was dirty or over-crowded! Thoroughly recommend for a quiet family holiday. Watch out for the horses they will eat your food if left out!

We spent half-term at this site. We went at the last minute having checked out the weather forecast to find out which part of the country should have the best weather. Until 6 years ago we were 'locals' to the forest and had very definite views about the Forest campsite and 'grockels' who stay there. I have to say that we had a lovely stay and the children (9 and 11) had a fantastic time. We enjoyed revisiting old haunts, seeing loads of deer and bumping in to old friends. The site was very refreshing - no hook ups meant no TVs blaring out and only a little muzak from neighbours. Most people seemed, like us, to want a peaceful break enjoying the countryside. The site was full all the time we were there - and parts of it were waterlogged, but there seemed to be enough space for everyone. My one complaint would be about the loo blocks. Over 50% of the time there was no loo roll in the ladies - we took our own. I only managed to get one shower in 5 days (pooh!) - and even then had to wait until 10.50am to get a free cubicle - there was a constant queue. At 11am the cleaner came in and called out that we all needed to get out of the showers because the block was going to be cleaned. There just weren't enough showers for women! There was also a constant queue for washing up sinks. We resorted to old fashioned camping - washing up and washing ourselves in the tent with water boiled on the stove.

Having read the previous reviews we were a little nervous about flooding - and a weeks worth of rain prior to our visit meant we were unsure if we would find pitches that were not waterlogged. However we were pleasantly surprised to find several large dry areas, meaning we could setup our group of tents exactly how we wanted. Although as the name suggests this is a wood and open sunny pitches were not so readily available.
Staff were friendly on arrival and throughout the visit, our only disappointment was that the ladies facilities were filthy and it seems that the one lunchtime clean each day was not enough to maintain the level of hygiene required for the number of campers over the half term period. Also closing the toilets between 11 and 1 daily was inconvenient especially for the children.
One thing we especially recommend (which is not mentioned on the Holland's Wood website) is that there is a short footpath from the site reception leading to a shallow stream which was fantastic welly soaking fun for all the kids and dogs.

Just got back from Whit break at this site. We were pleasantly surprised. The site was full (we booked very early) yet everything was clean, there was always availability at the quite large laundry and the site was pristine. Took a few goes to book as the administrative staff got the first booking wrong, but once on site we couldn't fault anything at all. All the fellow campers were really friendly, although perhaps a bit cliquey at first. Wore off quickly though. Despite the rain before hand we found a nice dry pitch but we arrived early, did get a bit boggy in some places. Definitely recommended, ideal for families as kids adored it

Having lived in southampton until 13 years ago (moved to Cornwall, lucky me) I had camped in the New Forest for over 25 years so have seen alot of changes over the years. Well the forest has not changed much and the sites are something like they used to be except years ago you did not have pitches as such, just found a space and camped in it....true camping. The Bad things that has changed in the forest are the people that now go camping there (not all) and the traffic.
Now then to Hollands Wood site, its true about the road and the flooding that can happen but remember anyone that goes camping should alwas select a spot with care. Look at the area, has it got dips or uneven spots or does it slope? All places that will affect the way water lies. The road, well we use to use the road noise to get us asleep :) That might sound strange but it works.
The site is very large and to me is what a forest camp site should be, within trees. The toilet/shower blocks are always kept clean but as said before do get busy but after a couple of days you soon suss out when to use them. The large green/field people talk about in other reviews was/is infact a MOOR and always use to be wet/boggy. There also used to be small ditches running right across the moor which we use to go newt fishing on (tying a worm to a bit of wool). As for the mounds others have mentioned, well never rearly found out about them but we use to use them as stepping stones across the moor, try it!
Now apart from what I would say about this site being a great site to camp, there is one other subject not written about to much in other reviews and that is the wildlife.... Get out of your cars, off your bikes and go for a walk, the site and area has all that you could wish to see. The deer are there you just need to be quiet, at night and early morning they come right down to the site. Go over to the moors at dusk and watch the bats hunting for insects, its a great thing to watch but you will have to be quick with your cameras. Well I could go on and on about Hollands Wood, the forest etc but I wont. Go and try it yourself, its a great place to camp and a great place to base yourself to explore the best place in the uk.. get out there and walk

Not a bad site but we were a bit disappointed (spoiled by our previous trip this year to a very quiet rural site perhaps.) Hollands Wood is located on a narrow strip of land between a large open field and the A337 - the main route through the New Forest. This road was constantly busy during our 3 day stay and even though we pitched as far away as possible it could still be heard.
The site is VERY popular and we had trouble finding a space to pitch our tent (we were honest and paid for two pitches due to the size of the thing but piches are not marked and there were some very interesting interpretations of the 6m rule going on). On the day we left there were loads of cars crusing the site searching for spaces - ours was nabbed before we had even fully packed up and left.
There are 3 shower blocks and we reckoned they contained 28 showers which does not seem very many for a 600 pitch site and probably explains why the only time there was not a queue to use them was at 11.00pm at night!
As good points the children loved the ponies that wander around the tents (and almost into ours on one occasion). They enjoyed riding their bikes over the fields and had loads of open space to run and play.
The site staff were very friendly and helpful and seemed to be keeping a low profile interested eye on activities. The place went quiet after 10.30pm despite there being a lot of large groups and loads of kids.
We would go again but not for more than a long weekend and then probably out of high season. If you are looking for a place where you can camp together as a group for a few nights in a pretty location then this site is probably ideal - just don't expect much rural peace and quiet!

August 2005 Just returned from a week at this site in August. Campsite was fully booked and therefore busy / slightly crowded. We arrived at 10:30 on Saturday morning to be told that we couldn't enter the site until midday as this is the time when departing campers have to vacate their pitch by. By miday the queue at reception to get your permit was awful. The reception sells batteries, milk, bread, bagettes and hires out their own iceblocks. We got onto the site and looked for a pitch - the site is long and narrow. The left side is near the very busy mainroad and therefore less popular. However the advantage being that its less crowded. The rightside of the site is quieter but a lot more crowded. Got a pitch on the right near the edge overlooking a big field - very nice. Never had a problem with queing for the showers. Toilets, showers mainly clean - bit muddy by evening but to be expected. Plenty of ponies wondering thru the site and squirrels in tent every morning trying to eat our food!!! Loads of kids everywhere which is good if you have kids - our daughter like meeting new friends. BUT its very noisy campsite - not radios, but just general kids screaming, running about even till 10:30ish. There was a heavy thunderstorm one night and the next morning a lot of people were bailing out their tents. Not very well drained in places. We'd go back to this site as its such a great location, pretty site, you can bike on the forest trails straight from the site, but be prepared for general noise levels - but then it is a big site and this should be expected I guess. Brockenhurst has a great bakers and deli aong with a small Tescos. Camping shop in Lyndhurst. Not too far for the beach. Marwells zoo at Southampton was very good, as was Portsmouth historic quay, Bournemouth near enough for a trip and don't miss the otter farm!!
