August 2005 We saw the campsite from the road (looked great)last year and although unable to view it (tight security) we gave it a go.
Big mistake. The first problem with this site is the road noise. Even though we camped at the rear of the site the noise was awful. Speaking to other campers although our weather was great they told tales of mass flooding on the site.
Perhaps the worst thing was the terrible overcrowding and the noise level from other campers. I know we went in August but the site was packed full and noisy up to 1am. It was so noisy that you sometimes had difficulty hearing people talk next to you. The walk to the local pub is along the very busy main road and the walk is not worth it as the pub is below average. All in all we would not consider going back to here.

July 2005 We have just spent the weekend at Hollands Wood. In my opinion, the previous reviews all seem to be honest and accurate, but I feel I need to emphasise three specific points:
1. Noise Wherever you manage to pitch your tent you will not be able to get away from the constant noise of the nerby main road. If you are looking for an away-from-it-all campsite then keep looking! Yes, it is in the woods and obviously there is noise from the children all having a lovely holiday, but we were dismayed by the constant roar from the road.
2. Flooding It rained hard on Saturday and many of the pitches were completely washed out! Some poor people woke up with 2 or 3 inches of muddy water in their tents. Apparently the site is prone to flooding (according to some regulars I spoke to) .... so avoid it if rain is forecast and always look for a pitch on raised ground.
3. Facilities I agree with previous postings - these are satisfactory in cleanliness but there aren't enough of them. Even at 7.45 I had to wait 15 mins for a shower, the queue for the ladies was substantially worse!
Having said all of this, it is a lovely site, it's well sited within the forest and has superb cycling trails right on its doorstep. We probably won't return because of the noise, but can see why others return.

August 2004 On arrival I found this site was crowded (not what I am used to as I normally go to matley wood) but we headed towards the north side of the camp site and found a nice big space for us by the toilet block.
The people were kind and friendly. The showers were crowded at the peak times but I quickly learnt when to go to avoid the queues.
People surrounding us were quite respectful to the fact that others were sleeping. Had a wonderful time at hollands wood and hope to go again soon!

July 2005 We just camped at this site for 5 days, after reading recommendations here. The site is very extensive, and although full, it wasn't too crowded. The showers are inadequate - there just aren't enough of them for a full site. Other than that, everything was great, with the other facilities really good and very clean.
Excellent washing up rooms and laundry room. It is rather noisy if you are near the road, but the pitches on the far side against the field are great.
The ponies were non-threatening, but the squirrels were evil, stealing our bread and fruit on several occasions! Although on the Forestry Commission site it says it is a 10 minute walk to Brockenhurst, I wouldn't say this is practical with small children, as you have to cross the horrendously A road from Lyndhurst to Lymington, and it would take you quite a lot longer than 10 minutes from the far end of the site.
By bike or car though it is just a few minutes away with ample parking in Brockenhurst and some nice food shops, and a very useful Tesco.

July 2005 Just back from weekend camping at this site. Great time, very recommended. Staff really helpful, facilities great, cleaned every day. Some queues at busy time, but nothing to cause a real problem. Would recommend going to the end at the site nearest the wood.
The A337 is a busy road and the noise could be off-putting. Short walk from Brockenhurst, Tesco's Express shop, a butchers, fruit shop, post office. Horses are a little naughty at night and have learned to open tent zips! so be prepared. Would defn go there again.

May 2005 A simply fantastic campsite for anyone with young children. Our 5 and 4 year olds thought this was excellent. A campsite in the woods, Ponies wandering through a large grassy area to play all manner of sports with the other visitors children, fallen trees to clamber over and a really friendly atmosphere. If you seek quiet away from the usual Holiday Park crowd then this is the place for you. There were cycle tracks out of the campsite and loads of genuine English Country pubs in the locality, if you asked the helpful site staff. The toilet/shower and washing-up facilities were always clean and had a constant supply of piping hot water. All-in-all excellent value!!!

May 2005 Spent 4 days here from Wednesday to Saturday. The site itself is excellent, set over a large area divided into large pitch areas. The whole site is broken up by well spaced trees...more like a woodland park than a campsite.
The staff were freindly, and helpful. Facilities are a basic, but well maintained, and thoroughly cleaned every morning. Towards the back of the site is a large heath on which the ponies gather. There are a number of fallen tree trunks along the side of this heath that make wonderful spots for a picnic. At the Northern end of the site there is open access to the New Forest. I walked from the site to Lyndhurst (3 miles) through the Forest and only saw 2 other people the whole time!
The only downside I found was the behaviour of some of the other campers. After 9pm the site appears to be unattended, and from Friday onwards some people use this as an opportunity to play up. several large family groups had wood fires (which are forbidden due to the proximity of the heath. The same groups also saw nothing wrong with partitioning large areas of the pitching sites of with windbreaks and awnings, then using other peoples pitches as cycle routes and football grounds. It did not bother me so much as I was leaving on the Saturday morning anyway, but on weekends I can see this being a problem.
This site is one that I shall certainly be visiting in the future on a regular basis.

May 2005 Just got back from a long weekend on this site. Have to say was dissapointed with the facitlites, although always clean and tidy, just not enough for the number of pitches. Had to queue everyday for a shower, usually for more that 45 minutes!
However, a lovely site providing you can get on the side furthest away from the road, as the road is never quiet. Booked a dog free pitch, but was unable to find enough room, so ended up in the doggie bit, wasn't a problem though as owners were sensible. Great cycle routes that lead straight off the site, so no need to go on the busy roads if you don't want to.

March 2005 This is a fantastic Campsite, fantastically freindly staff, and really beautiful location. There is stacks of room, so you are never annoying or being annoyed by your neighbours. At the bottom on the campsite there is a beautiful stream where the wild new forest ponies roam freely. I'm sure in the summer it is a great spot to spend the day for as picnic.
Although a very tranquil site we did have some excitment when at about 2am a very large black horse came galloping through the campsite, quite scary!! There is also the Little Miss ice cream van, which does delicious 99s with all the extras.
There is a large field next to the camp site, which I disagree is good for ball games as it is very boggy (in March any how) and has very strange mounds all over it which me and my friends decided were unhatched dinosaur eggs!!! Facilities were clean and tidy , and with out a doubt I will be back there next Easter.

September 2004 This is a lovely site within the New Forest complete with ponies that venture through the site. The showers/toilets and washing up areas are of a good standard. The only downside we found was that we had asked for the dog free area and camped in the designated spaces, however, there were people in this area with dogs.
