After spending 6 nights at Fforest Fields, I can fully appreciate why this site is rated highly by so many.

The owners have lovingly created a camp site that is well-designed and maintained.

The new facilities block is simply wonderful.

They provide fridges as well as freezers for the campers to use, plus mobile phone charging facility, microwave as well as an electric kettle.

The showers are push-button type, and I am sure other ladies will be glad to hear the shower heads are not fixed to the walls but attached via hoses and risers, talk about camping shower heaven!

My dog loved the ponds, the boating and fishing lakes. And we loved cycling around the camp site as it is quite flat.

The site is in the middle of nowhere, very peaceful and quiet.

Although the Reception stocks some basic provisions, the range is very limited. Therefore, it is advisable to come prepared, as shops are located a few miles away in Llanelwedd.

The site stocks locally produced sausages and burgers which looked very tempting. The bacon was certainly very tasty.

And they stock Delta Pegs!

Bring plenty of change though to buy the goodies, as they operate an 'Honesty Box' system, very trusting indeed.

Plenty of lovely walks around the camp site, and Katie and George have provided a helpful map detailing the walks free of charge.

There is a pub about a mile away, however, I did not go there during my stay.

Apart from the ponds and the lakes, there are no play area/equipment for children. However, the handful of children on site during my stay appeared to find ways to enjoy themselves.

I originally planned to stay at Fforest Fields earlier in the year over Easter. However, it was snowed under, and they kindly rang and suggested I defer my visit until the weather is better.

Both the owners were very helpful before and during my stay.

When I suggested to them that perhaps they should consider taking booking fees in future, he replied they would like Fforest Fields to be 'different'.

Different it certainly is, for many good reasons!

As they do not stock ice cream (the only niggle for me, however, it is a very tiny niggle), I shall come prepared next time, equipped with ice blocks etc. , so that I can pop into town to get some and bring back to the site to keep in the freezer.

All in all, a very pleasant trip at a unique site that is Fforest Fields, and I shall return next year.

P.S. I had an all-weather pitch for the duration of my stay, and found it to be hard on the knees and under-foot when compared to a grass pitch.

However, it was level, and I could use normal pegs including nylon Delta pegs on it. I would not advise using wire hook pegs except for non-load-bearing points though as they did not stay in the ground as well as Deltas and 6in or 9in angle steel pegs.

I would definitely advise on using an additional groundsheet like a cheap tarp to give extra protection against the tent's groundsheet.

The main bonus for an all-weather pitch for me personally was a dry primary groundsheet at the end of the trip, compared with one that was normally covered with grass and mud when I camped on a grass pitch.

I have requested to go on an all-weather trip for my next trip as I liked it.

Just returned from a long weekend at this superb site. I can't recommend it highly enough. The owner and the team at fforest fields have done a stunning job.

The new toilet block and facilities are amazing. Spotlessly clean with mops and cloths so that campers can do their bit to keep it that way (and please do!). Shower cubicles are spacious with separate dressing bays and a shower curtain to help keep the area dry. It's good to see that they chose space instead of cramming another shower in.

There's an excellent campers room with 4 fridges, mobile phone charging boxes, a microwave and kettle. A drying room and separate laundry, family rooms for changing. There's a huge amount of thought gone into this addition to the site.

In the office there's a handful of essentials for sale the highlight of which are the burgers and sausages made from local pigs allowed to roam and forage freely in the surrounding forests. I'd go back just to eat these again!

The boating lake and fishing lake are beautifully landscaped and the surrounding area is great to walk around. There are even lovely info leaflets detailing a number of great walks around the site and further afield. There's a lot of attention to detail that's gone into this place.

Builth is just 4 miles drive where there are the usual shops and pubs. Highly recommend the 7 stars at aberedw too.

Really really impressed with this site. A huge well done to everyone involved.

As always, we picked this site after reading the reviews on here. This is a lovely, remote site, ideal for a 'wind down'. Quiet and peaceful. The facilities must be new, really spacious and clean. Small lake on site with a couple of kayaks for hire. Lovely walks up the hills straight from the site, where we watched Buzzards soaring over head. Small amount of supplies available from the shop/office which is only manned part time. Highly recommended if you love the peace and quiet as we do.

Fforest Fields is easily the best camp site we have stayed at. Clean, tidy, extremely friendly owners, close to a lovely pub (20 minutes' walk), several decent treks up and over the nearby hills, and just enough to keep the kids happy. There's a boating lake, several small ponds with wildlife, plus sheep and birds all around. Sandwiched between some of the pitches is a large field for kids (and adults) to play football or rounders. While we were there a number of groups started games - and anyone was welcome to join in.

It's a mix of caravan and tent pitches, all close to the immaculate centre's facilities that were re-built last summer. The showers, toilets, washing room etc are on a par with any decent hotel. The main office also sells the basics like milk, bread, sausage and bacon - done on an 'honesty box' system. And the prices are very fair, like a bottle of washing up liquid for just 60p.

If you do want to leave the camp site and surrounding area, there are a few decent-sized towns with 10-15 minutes' drive. Fforest Fields is remote in all the right ways, but has many other places of interest on its doorstep. AS close to perfect as you'll probably get.
Management response: Thank you so much for your review of Fforest Fields, may I just clarify that the area where you can play games isn't 'sandwiched' between tents and caravans, it's a large area and there is a larger one just behind a fence, keeping it completely separate from the camping area and more suitable for use during busy periods.

I can only reiterate other's comments, this is a fab site in a gorgeous setting. Stayed for brief 2 night visit whilst children were competing in mountain bike race and wish we could have stayed longer.

Arrived late & in dark, but wasn't a problem and we were assisted to our pitch by owner.

Toilet & shower facilities are excellent. Hot, plentiful, included in price & well kept. Great little shop. Didn't use the washing up/laundry facilities but imagine they're great - all situated in same new-build block with showers.

Stayed here on recommendation of a friend who came before the shower block was rebuilt and will definitely go back. Beautiful location - look forward to return visit when the weather is warmer so that we can enjoy sitting out instead of having to enjoy the view from warmth of caravan.

Not the cheapest site but you get what you pay for. Thank you Fforest Fields - spot on.

We came to Fforest Fields intending to stay a few days and ended up staying there for 2 weeks. We could happily have stayed a lot longer! It's a very special place and if there's another site as magical as this anywhere in the UK, I'll be pleasantly surprised.

The facilities are 5* - lovely, spacious, hot showers in a heated block, laundry room, drying room, facility room with freezers and microwave, excellent facilities for families and disabled visitors too. Essentials such as milk and bread are for sale in the reception office and there's an honesty box for payments. There are all sorts of thoughtful little details, too, such as rings where you can tie up your dog while you pop to the loo.

The site is beautifully landscaped, with ponds and little streams running through it, trees here and there, a feeding station for birds, and pitches are generous and uncrowded.

TV, phone and MiFi signals were all strong - I think this is the only site we've been on where we got all three inside our motorhome! Usually we have to wander around dejectedly in the rain trying to get a phone signal, but not here.

Then there's the setting - spectacular! Hills and low mountains all around, fields lower down and open land up on the mountain tops. Lots of woodland too, and dozens of footpaths and trails to explore - some steep and demanding, others offering gentle strolls through this lovely landscape. Waterfalls tumble over rocky drops and there are ancient mossy trees mixed in among the larches (which are gradually being removed and replaced with mostly deciduous trees). It's a birders paradise - red kites, buzzards, ravens, snipe, curlews, woodcock, and we think we heard a long-eared owl in the woods. Brilliant.

If you like walking, mountain-biking or road cycling, birding, wildlife spotting, landscape and wildlife photography, or just chilling out in beautiful surroundings, this is the place for you. There's even a lake on site where you can borrow kayaks (refundable deposit) to paddle around, or swim in warmer weather.

It's heaven for dogs with endless wonderful walks and a field where they can run around off-lead. I think my dog actually cried when we left!

It's a family-run site and the friendliest site we've stayed on so far - the people are as lovely as the place.

Just a fantastic place. We loved it, and we'll be back one day.

Having recently returned from 4 days at this campsite I can confidently say we will not find another campsite like it anywhere.

Relaxed, friendly, helpful staff.

The facilities are out of this world. Hard standing and all weather pitches available with and without electric hookups for tents as well as caravans and motor homes, put our tent on one of the all weather pitches and thankfully it stayed dry so it wasn't put to the test, however it was just as easy pitching up on one as it would have been on grass, another added bonus is if you were staying for a week you wouldn't have to move your tent if pitched up on grass as well. Toilet/shower block that has several walk in showers in both the female and male blocks, all spotless and even has a mop in each to give the showers a once over once you have used them to leave them in a 'leave it as you found it' condition which works.

We didn't use them but there is also a washing room, with 3 washing machines and 2 tumble driers, a washing up room with several sinks, again all in immaculate condition, a drying room (which we used once to have a sneaky warm after a hike up the mountain in freezing windy conditions) and also a facility room with fridges, freezers and even a microwave and kettle for people to use.

On top of that, in the reception area you can buy basic supplies from milk, orange juice to matches, firelighters, tent pegs even bags of logs to use with the freely available fire pits on site. All operates on an 'honesty box' system which goes to show the trust the owners give you.

If memory serves there is a pub close by (maps are available in reception for free) as well as several in Built Wells itself which is less than 10 minutes up the road by car. There is also a waypointed walk of about 6 miles from the site that takes you to another pub but once on top of the mountain, the road split into what looked like 3 paths going in separate directions and the sign must have blown away as we didn't see it so decided to follow our noses instead and enjoy the freedom of walking on top of the mountain and the exhilaration of having winds over 80mph trying to take us off our feet (and making me curse that I left my buff in the tent, lol).

If walking isn't your thing there is plenty of bird life if you enjoy bird spotting (as my other half does). Without even making any effort we spotted several buzzards, red kites (amazing birds to watch even for me who isnt really interested in bird watching) as well as quite a few others that I cant remember but the other half will, think she counted about 20 different species she spotted.

I didn't spot any kids playing areas but in all honesty I wasn't really looking and the kids we saw on the site were all having a blast playing cricket and football (and Mich was greeted by some girls practising a singing/dancing routine in the toilet block one day when it was a bit chilly, lol). Not to mention kayaking on the lake. Its also dog friendly and would say about half the people on the site had dogs with them and could see the dogs were loving it, sounds silly but they all seemed so happy.

All in all, don't think I will come across a better site for facilities and cleanliness and cant wait to return again later in the year.

Just got back yesterday from a fantastic week away, we were nearly put off by the snow but we are so pleased that we made it. A very special place, run by some very special people. The week was made even better by the snow. Putting the new awning up in the snow without instruction was interesting, but now we have so many fantastic memories. We can not praise this site enough, and we hope to go back very soon. Very child and dog friendly for those of you who are asking. Our six year old little girl (who is very active!) had a brilliant time. Long walks with the dog, bike riding, playing football and searching for pond life in the pretty stream that runs through the middle of the site managed to tire her out. Not to mention the bonus of two days sledging down the hill next to the campsite. Facilities (Showers/toilets/drying room/campers room/family rooms/ disabled room etc. ) are fantastic! Some of the best we have ever used. The shop/reception stocks limited supplies but all you need to get by. The owners are always around if you have any problems, or just for a chat. We had a wonderful week.

We have just returned from our second stay at Fforest Fields but a first since the new build and what can we say other than wow!

Firstly the new facilities block is something out of this world, everything has been thought of here.

It was nice to see that the tariff for the Christmas and New Year period hadn't been bumped up to a crazy price like many sites do.

Fforest Fields is set in the most perfect location for winter or summer holiday with many lovely walks from the site or within a short drive.

The weather was not on our side at all for most of our stay but the amazing drying room helped sort out all our outdoor gear, just a shame they didn't have a dog drying room!

George was always on hand at some point in the day and was always happy to answer any questions we had and just offer a friendly smile or chat, my two young boys adore him and loved helping to restock the bird feeders with him, sadly on this visit we missed Katie but she was always more than helpful via email as I had lots of questions being as we were staying over the festive period.

There is not one thing I can fault about Fforest fields other than no matter how long you go for it won't be long enough! We can't wait to return

The previous reviews say so much that it’s almost not worth writing another review. However I think the more people express their views, the easier it is for someone to form an opinion when reading reviews.

This campsite is situated in a small quiet valley with picturesque views of the hillside. The owners have planted many trees and shrubs and have created an oasis of tranquillity. There is a lake where you can hire a kayak or swim and if you haven’t got the energy to climb the hill (it is worth it), then it’s nice just to walk around the site.

The new facilities are only a few months old and a lot of thought appears to have gone into creating them. The ladies contains 8 toilets, 7 washbasins (plus 1 private cubicle with basin), 5 soap dispensers, 5 spacious showers, a brilliant hand-drier – very fast – a long length mirror, vanity top, socket and hooks galore. There are also 2 family rooms and a disabled bathroom. Other facilities include a laundry room, drying room, wash-up room (with about 7 sinks) and an “information” room which contains 2 fridges, 2 freezers, a microwave and mobile phone chargers all free for campers’ use. All the facilities were cleaned regularly.

The reception/shop was un-manned the whole time we were there, so you need to log yourself in, put your money (cash or cheque) into an envelope (provided) and pop your payment into the honesty box. The shop provides basic food requirements and a few other bits and bobs – again, put your money into the honesty box, so make sure you have plenty of change. The food is locally sourced and is all top quality and delicious. Free wifi was very much appreciated.

There is a Tesco and an Aldi at Llandrindod Wells and the food at The Hundred House Inn is very good and sensibly priced. Dawn and Paul have been managing the inn since February this year, so any reviews you read before then don’t apply now.

George was around a lot of the time and is very friendly – my only disappointment all week was not seeing Katie – she contributes to UKCampsite.co.uk such a lot, I was really looking forward to meeting her, oh well, I suppose we’ll just have to go again some time!
