We found this site by accident really. Coming inland from touring the Northumberland coast we stopped by Kielder Water then headed towards Hadrian’s Wall hoping to find a decent campsite and a pub for some food. Heading west on the B6318 which runs parallel to the wall and the A69, there’s a site near the “Twice Brewed” pub but we continued a little further up the road, probably not even a mile. The campsite is signed from the main road, and it’s just off to the left down a minor road.
It’s a great little campsite. The owners are very friendly and welcoming. The site in general is very dog-friendly with bins for waste and water bowls situated outside the facilities. The owners have several dogs themselves too, which is why they are so accommodating.
On the owner’s recommendation we went to the Milecastle Inn for food. It’s a small, cosy pub about a mile further down the main road. We were early enough to get a seat on a Saturday night, but it soon got full. Food was lovely and the beers were great too. They don’t take dogs inside, which is probably for the best given its small size.
I was given the grand tour by the owner. Very informative, he showed me around the facilities and the heated rooms for drying out clothing and towels etc. They even have a fridge and a freezer for camper’s use. The toilet/shower block is kept very clean and tidy, made from pine-style furnishings it looks really nice too. Music is playing inside too, giving a real calm feeling to the place.
The sign at the entrance says they do breakfasts too, but we didn’t have time to check them out.
The location is lovely, set in a dip in the hills, there’s a footpath down the road to walk to Haltwhistle. There’s plenty of Hadrian’s Wall stuff nearby which we would have loved to investigate further if we had the time. Maybe next time, and we’ll definitely stay here again.

We booked this site for two nights but extended it to three as we liked it a lot. The site is set on different terraces, we were on the first directly behind the shower block which was flat and seemed more sheltered than the top which looked more exposed to the wind. The overflow meadow seemed quite steep and most tents seemed to be pitched at an angle.
The facilities are excellent, very clean and modern. There is a freezer for ice packs and also a washing machine and drying room. The sauna was out of order during our visit. The only issue we had was the showers ran out of hot water in the afternoon when our 7 year old's hair was full of shampoo. Fair enough not many people use the showers at this time but that was why we waited, as morning and evenings were very busy. The owner seemed a little put out that I had bothered him and put the boiler on to constant, which begs the question what was it set to before?, we still had to wait half an hour for the water to warm up and would have appreciated even a bucket of warm water to rinse her hair, but the owner just disappered. Apart from this the staff were very friendly, especially the warden and his wife.
The location is spectacular and ideal for visiting Hadrians Wall. We went to the Greenhead pub for a meal which is highly recommended. One other slight criticism is that when the site is busy they do tend to try and cram in as many as possible. One family were told to pitch next to us with a huge tent that was almost touching ours. They were then moved however as they weren't happy either.
Overall I would recommend this site and will definitely return in the future.

Returned to this site for over a week stay following a couple of nights last year.
Beautiful site, clean facilities and local attractions (Newcastle, Carlisle and Hadrians wall) within easy reach.
Unfortunately it rained all week so the site became very muddy and slippy, and the toilets/ drainage backed up - but this was quickly sorted out.

Just returned from a great week here. Like the other reviews say the 'owner is a bit of a character' but he and his wife are very helpful and friendly and can't do enough for you. Grass immaculate, facilities modern and spotless, views unbelievable. I had the longest hottest free shower I have had in my life here. Facilities cleaned numerous times during the day. Really well suited for walking or cycling the wall. This is what we did.
Day 1: walked east along Hadrians Wall (16 miles) to Chesters Fort and caught the Hadrians Wall bus back. You can wealk through Housteads Fort for free. Goes every 90 minutes or so and cost £5.00 each.
Day 2: Went on a saver day return to Newcastle. Cost £16.50 return for two but restricted to return after 6.00pm. Great day out. Go to the museum of the north and the discovery museum - both free and go to the indoor market for some fantastic fresh produce. Have a beer in the Weatherspoons on the quayside. Overlooks the Tyne but Weatherspoon prices.
Day 3: Cycled around the 27 mile Lakeside Way around Kielder Water. Great ride - off rode on good tracks. Fine even in wet weather. Go from the dam and then you can stop at the pub in Kielder for lunch half way round. Some cheeky little hills on the route.
Day 4: Walked West (16 miles) along Hadrians Wall to Brampton. Caught Hadrians Wall Bus back. Cost £3.80 each.
Day 5: Drove round the local area and had lunch out. Some beautiful villages and bleak moorland but don't even think about buying unless you have deep pockets.
Day 6: Cycled along National Cycle Route 72 to Carlisle. A nice route but it is nearly 40 miles to Carlisle on the route and only 28 by main road. Main road is far too busy though. You see at least 5 or 6 signs saying Carlisle 7 Miles before you get any closer. Its all about the journey not getting there though.! Caught the train back with our bikes. Cost £10.80. Bikes no problem.
Visit: If you eat out go to the Blenkinsopp Castle Hotel for £5.00 on Thursdays or go to the Black Bull in Haltwhistle any night for a massive selection of real ales and a good menu at a reasonable price.
Off the Wall in Brampton had the best bowl of soup and a roll I have had in my life for £2.50
The fish and chip shop in the main street in Hexham. Eat downstairs in the cafe. Fish and chips £6.80
Avoid: the Costa Coffee on Durham Services on the way.
The library in Hexham where they charge you to use the internet.

The site is a little out of the way, but that's what some are looking for.
This site really scores for walkers doing Hadrian's Wall. I guess the site is about 1/2 mile from the Wall. The building housing the facilities looks alright from the outside, but it's something else inside : all Scandanivian-style wooden panelling and construction. The good showers and sauna (sauna closed at the time of our visit) must be a very welcome site a the end of a day's walking.
The owner is a bit of a character and likes a bit of banter.
The pitches are on raised areas, but the EHU points are a bit sparse. You could end up trailing your cable across the lane for somebody to drive over later.

We stayed at this site for 2 nights to walk the central hadrians wall.
Very clean site and friendly owners. Weather took a turn for the worse high winds and thunderstorms. The owners went out off their way to help motorbikers, backpackers and a Dutch family with a trailer tent.
The toilets and showers where immaculate and the varied tiered camping places where superb an flat. Great walks for the family and dogs with a pub just over the moor using a footpath. Great food.
Only downside was nowhere to get rid of the grey water! otherwise we are planning to book here again in the near future. Well recommended.

Just spent a very peaceful weekend at this wonderful site and what a setting to recharge those batteries. Graham and Barbara were very friendly and helpful. The site was very quiet as we were practically the only van there for the first night. The sauna sounded appealing however didn't get the time maybe next visit
Spent a few hours walking the wall and then a trip into Haltwhistle where there are a wealth of shops, takeaways and pubs.
Will definitely return

Spent the weekend at this site while in the area to attend the 'Illuminating the Wall' event. The site was very busy but, as usual, facilities were kept spotlessly clean and there was plenty of space for everyone. Great owners give a warm welcome and the location of the site is ideal - just a 5 minute walk from some excellent remains of the Roman wall.

I can definitely recommend this site if you want a quiet time in a proper old fashioned rustic campsite but with all mod cons. The shower block with sauna and washing and drying facilities and fridge and freezer were great. If the weather is bad (and it was very cold in February) then this has all you need.
I am new to caravanning and winter camping and had explained this to the campsite owners and they checked up to make sure everything was ok without being intrusive. Needless to say the site was quiet in February which was lovely, but I also can imagine it would be a great place to stay in warmer weather when it is busy and bustling.
The location is stunning with loads of choice of walking and trips to little towns. I think it would be a great site for tents and caravans. The ducks and chickens were always hungry and liked to wake me up in the morning so no alarm clock needed!

Just spent 2 nights at this lovely site. We had not booked in advance, but had noted address previous to setting off. This site was everything we wanted, the friendliness of Graham and Barbara was great! Showers and toilets very clean, nice music piped through and although someone previously noted they did not see anyone cleaning them we saw both Barbara and the warden clean them regularly. We had a lovely time at the site, saw brilliant sunset's both nights. (The site had suffered heavy rain several days before we arrived) lovely area for walking, only a short drive into Haltwistle for a few bits of shopping. The site has several levels, for tents, tourers etc., and has a couple of hardstanding area's for motorhomes. We accessed the site from the A69 the site was not signposted (we had sat nav) and the road to site was very steep. If you access from he B6318 it is signposted and only a mile from the junction. Much easier access !
