We arrived at this site on Friday about 4.30pm with high expectations, after reading all the rave review.
I had made a group booking 6 weeks in advance and was told 7 large tents on Friday with an additional tent turning up on Saturday was no problem at all.
On arrival we were met by a gentleman who I assume is the owner of the site. He sent us to the house to check in and pay. He seemed concerned when I told him we had 7 tents arriving as the site seemed quite busy. He put us on an area of grass right beside the duck pond and amenities, which was obviously a caravan area. The slope was horrendous and there was hardly a flat area on there. He explained that they had had torrential rain for about a month and so the ground was quite sodden, then before we had a chance to even think about setting up, started telling us not to mess up the grass.
Some of the higher areas had nice flat pitches and would have a better chance of draining than where we were stuck. The slope ran away down from the amenities block, and had a layer of rock / brick / stone about 3 or 4 inches under the turf. In total the group ruined well over 50 pegs trying to pitch there.
What was blatantly obvious to us was they had forgot to plan for a group arrival, or had decided to just pack us in to make as much money as possible
We planned as best we could to get all our tents on flat-ish plots, but were crammed onto the small area made available. The owner asked that everyone went to the house before going to the field to pitch. One of our group arrived and came over to us, to see what he was to do.(this was his and his two boys’ first camping trip) . His greeting was the owner running out of his little van shouting at us, that he had TOLD us to check in first ! Not a great start.
We were asked then to move all non essential vehicles to a car park a little way up the site. I told him that I would ensure we did, as soon as everyone was pitched. I was asked again to move cars when we were still unloading and putting up tents. The general feeling of not being welcome at all was starting to become apparent to several of our group.
Once we were all sorted, we decided to pop to the local pub to feed the children, as it was quite wet and miserable. It’s about a mile and a half away, so we decided to use a few designated drivers, as the old military road is not the safest road to walk along in the dark with a group of kids. The pub in Twice Brewed was cosy and extremely welcoming and well worth a visit. Great beers and well prepared meals, served by friendly staff. (they do cash back as well !)
The site’s amenities are the best I have come across on any of our trips. They are clean and well maintained. They were quite warm, but the heating as advertised on the site wasn’t turned on, on any of the times I visited the block. The heat seemed to come from the tumble drier and from the showers.
The drier was useful as we had torrential rain for best part of the weekend. However, the plugs were padlocked to the wall, but there was an honesty box to pay for using the washer or drier. One lady in our group went up there on Saturday evening to get warmed up. She was approached by the warden who questioned how long she had been sat in there ! The feeling of mistrust on the site was apparent all trip. If you went to the drying room (which was free to hang up your clothes or boots) the owner or the warden appeared within a few minutes, to check what you were doing.
The children had no room to play. They were constantly told to stop going near the duck pond, stop splashing in puddles, stop running on the wet grass, because the were making it muddy!.
It seemed that every time the kids went to play, something was found to complain about. I’ve said in previous reviews, we firmly believe that the children should be able to enjoy the outdoors, when we go camping. This site was simply too small for a large group. I just wish that had been relayed to me when I booked, so I could have found somewhere bigger.
When our eighth tent arrived on Saturday, they were told by the owner he had already been turning people away that morning. They told him they were part of the group booking and he reluctantly let them pitch.
How you can even contemplate not letting someone who booked 6 weeks ago onto the site beggars belief.
I am intrigued to know if our price of £10 per tent and £2 per person over 10 per night is the normal rate. Although signs stated discounts for groups, we didn’t seem to get one for 8 tents, 17 adults and 8 children. If that doesn’t make a group I don’t know what does.
In summary this site is ideal for people with no children.
The amenities are excellent, even if the heating is left off.
There is a sauna, which we almost used until we were told £5 per head. A sauna doesn’t use more steam because more people are in there !
The cost of tents is reasonable, the hook-up was only £2.50 per night and the showers and hot water are included.
After a talk with the whole group, we agreed that the site wasn’t for us and we would not be returning.
That said, for small adult groups and those who love to ramble and hike through some of the country’s finest scenery, then this site is probably what you are looking for.

Lovely little campsite. I can't really add more than anyone else has said. Toilets always clean, showers free and hot, clean washing up sinks, helpful owners. The kids loved watching the ducks.
We too were right at the top with a lovely view.
Only note of caution would be, if you are looking for peace and quiet it is wonderful through the week but beware some weekend campers! We had a blissful week until Friday when loads of folk arrived for the weekend. There is no enforced curfew here, and everyone respected everyone elses peace through the week, but some of the weekend folk were rather noisy until quite late!
I would definitely recommend the site, but as I said above, if you are wanting to lie in bed and listen to nothing but the sheep in the fields beside you then perhaps avoid Friday/Saturday nights.

Great Site! We were right at the top on Everest for our weekend-what a view! Kids thoroughly enjoyed it especially feeding the ducks and chickens. The shower and toilet block are clean and warm, HOT water for a shower and even a sauna-what more could you ask for! We'll definitely return and hopefully have better weather.

This is a brilliant site with great facilities and friendly staff. All been said in previous reviews. BUT we stayed 2 nights. Saturday afternoon and evening were spoilt by about 10 small kids playing incessant football games around the tent followed later by a large group of teenage boys doing the same until dusk. Inevitably both tent and car got hit a few times. After dark the fun really got going with a hen party arriving back at 11.30 and continuing with girly giggles / shrieks and car doors slamming until 3.00am. Many apologies (and excuses) from warden the following morning so we decided to give it a second chance.Sunday night was bliss.Campsite busy but wonderfully quiet to the extent that we went to bed at 9.00 (knacked from the night before) overslept until 10.00. We will be going back. But not at a weekend.

What a little Gem!
We stayed over the bank holiday weekend 23rd - 26th May (3 nights). The site owners Graham and Pat, and Barbara the warden, were all very friendly, welcoming and incredibly helpful. The toilets/showers are excellent - hot showers, warm changing area and very clean toilets. The owners also do a very good full English Breakfast in the farm house kitchen - great value - don't forget to book.
We had a fantastic pitch.
The location is good for Exploring Hadrian's Wall and Vindolanda. Twice brewed pub also worth a visit - excellent local beer.
This is a fantastic site, with great views. The site pond also had its very own duck family with 18 ducklings and the children loved to feed the farm chickens.
We would highly recommend this site to anyone visiting the area.
BIG thank you to Graham, Pat and Babara for a fab weekend - we will be back!

We stayed at this site over the bank holiday weekend. The site was very full. Our booking was for 8 families. The site owners Pat and Graham, and Barbara the warden were all very friendly and accomodating. This is a great site, fab toilets and showers (realy clean all weekend), with great views. Lovely pond with a duck family on it. The site hosted a bbq on sunday in aid of Air Ambulance. Lovely burgers and local sausages! The site is very close to lots of visiter attractions. Lovely walks along the wall. Some nice pubs close by. Would definately recomend this site. Thanks Pat, Graham and Babara for a fab weekend we will be back!

We stayed here for three nights in a two man (+dog)tent, mid May 2008. The location is good for Exploring Hadrian's Wall (easily reachable by wallking or the very good bus service) and is quite secluded/peaceful. The toilets/showers are excellent. The owners also do a very good full English Breakfast in the farm house kitchen which I thought was good value at £6 per head.
The owners and staff on the site, Pat Graham and Barbara were very welcoming and laid back and incredibly helpful. We had a problem with our car so Pat drove my wife into Haltwhistle to buy some essential supplies and wouldn't take any payment for her time or petrol.
I would recommend this site to anyone visiting the area.

What a lovely site! Small, well managed and with lovely facilities and in a smashing location with good views and close to the Wall.
It had rained heavily before we arrived and as a result we weren't able to pitch on the grass (they have plans to create some hardstandings, which will be good) but we were found a suitable gravel based place to park and made extremely welcome.
The facility block is clearly relatively new, and offers decent showers and loos, a laundry and a sauna (am told this costs £5 a time). It was incredibly cold on the last morning of our stay and as a result there were some problems with frozen pipes, but this should be a rare occurence.
The site is really well placed for visiting the middle section of Hadrian's Wall, including Vindolanda, Housesteads and the Roman Army Museum.
A site we will definitely return to.

Recommended site for activites in and around Carlisle and Newcastle, as the site is close to the A69.
Site has a very good recently built shower/toilet/sauna block. Connected to the shower block is a bunk barn that has a common room, and two rooms of four beds. All tent/caravan pitches have electric hook-up.
Site is within walking distance of Hadrian's Wall to the north, and Vindolanda Roman excavations.
Owners were welcoming and offered ideas for local site seeing.
Mile Castle Inn is a 5 minute drive and offers home cooked meals and good local ales.
