All be wary of the tide times, especially at night, as some plonker tried to drive through it and fell off the road!
Nice and quiet compared to bank holiday last year.
Camped by The North Chali which my friend hired for the week.
First time I used my second vango Maritsa 700 and this time it worked perfect
Had great fun around wales

Although we are nearly a year on, I had been reading reviews in hope to pick up some tips for our forthcoming trip, and decided to write my own review of this site.
We have been told about this site by various campers over the last ten years and despite the descriptions of the location, we were always put off because of their comments regarding the facilities.
Finally, we plucked up the courage. After staying for the August Bank Holiday in Caenarfon, we went on for a three night stay. Yes, we were lucky with the weather. But, honestly, we were disappointed we had left it so long.
The location is amazing and I figured you could stay for a week and still not have explored all of the site. The harbour, the causeway, the sand dunes, the rock pools, the sandy beach, the shelly beach, and the three pools that you can splash about and use your dinghy in. You can pitch on grass, amongst the dunes, close to the facilities, away from them, amongst trees. Lovely!
The shower block was basic with a row of showers, metal walls (not tiled). However, they are well designed for ease of use; i. E enough hooks and a wall with seating between the shower and the door, which means there is always somewhere dry to put your gear.
The toilets are not the most pleasant experience, but not as bad as anticipated. Maybe we were just lucky, but we did always find the main toilet block, one of the newer small toilet blocks and the portable loo reasonably clean. But, having a 'luggable loo' which we also used, we are used to 'roughing it' a bit.
No rowdy behaviour on our stay, but we just missed the bank holiday and we pitched a very long way away from the centre.
Watching the sunset over the dunes, enjoying the warmth of our campfire, smelling the bbqs, waking up to the rabbits, finding hundreds of starfish, unusual jellyfish and catching a massive crab in our sand bucket, a swim in the sea and the most creative sand mermaid - made our three night trip, absolutely wonderful.
Hence, we are going for a longer period this August.

We visited Shell Island for the first time in July 2012 and we LOVED it!
Beautiful location, private beach, numerous well located water points, adequate shower and toilet facilities, cafe and snack bar, games room, bar, restaurant, mini market, gift shop, camping shop, park, launderette and even a Pizzeria take away for nights when cooking is the last thing on your mind! What more could you ask for?
We had a fantastic 8 nights and cant wait to go back in 4 weeks for 14 nights!
Yes you get rowdy campers, we were disturbed by a Volkswagen camper with a set of DJ decks set up in the back! However we complained to security who dealt with it promptly! And the following morning the offenders had gone! (Well done Shell) I really cant believe some reviews actually mark Shell Island down for the actions of SOME of its guests!
The toilet and shower facilities are clean and adequate, we never had a problem! I found the best time to use the showers was between 4 & 5 pm. You are not staying in a 5* holiday resort!
Always something to do, some of the best days of our holiday were spent with family on the beach! You really don't need to leave the site if you want to Shell has it all!
Shops are well stocked with everything you need and more besides! Some items are a little pricey but not ridiculously expensive like my local corner shop!
Club is basic but excellent for children (my daughter loved it) and families and the bar has a nice relaxed atmosphere. The entertainment was a bonus!
The launderette is clean and does what its supposed to but a few more machines would be an added bonus as it can get busy and when you are camping for more than a few days you really do need to use it.
All in all a fantastic week was had by all and we are excited to be returning in just 4 weeks!

We are just back from shell island so here's just a few thoughts, good & bad
Great value for money, the site is clean if a bit whiffy at times around shower blocks
Superb beach with minimum debris/rubbish
Shops including bar & cafe well stocked if a bit pricey
Most of the campers well behaved and considerate of others, but my only negative thoughts come because of the large groups of tents that were circled (maybe to guard against Indian attack) you know the type 86 tents for 88 people and usually near or blocking walk ways or stand pipes
I think if the site was segregated so they could supply at least 1 field for us grumpy older campers a lot of bonhomme could develop for all age groups
This was our second visit this year we much preferred the weather last week(july 21-28)to our other visit in hurricane season at end of April
Thinking of returning soon possibly for beer festival at end of September, then it'll be who cares about weather

Just got back from shell, at last good weather. Not like Easter.
This place is ace just like holidays I had back in the 70s. Great beach, great crabbing, simple no frills camping.
Most of the toilets scattered around the site are now proper site cabin toilets apart from the far fields near the dunes and they keep on top of cleaning them despite some animals
The camp shops are well stocked you can buy most kit you have forgot or need refills for
I bought a fresh crab in the grocery shop £2. 50
It was very nice with some lemon.
The Victoria Pub dose nice food in the village as you turn into Shell Island
I hope they keep doing the same thing, clean and simple holidays, it is an ace place to be when the weather is good

Gosh, a lot of negative comments.
I've been coming to Shell Island for the last 35 years, my wife and I for the last 15.
We've been on our own, with our young daughter, with friends, family and with our 2 Jack Russell's. In all this time we've had good and bad times. More good than bad though.
Yes they don't really have enough showers, but I believe there is a planning constraint which won't allow them to add more.
In a nutshell, if you go in school holiday season, and especially on a bank holiday it's going to be crowded, busy, noisy, and the facilities won't really be able to cope. The 20 metre rule will be out of the window, and if (like us) you're camping for peace and quiet and as an escape from the daily rat race - youre pretty much guaranteed to have a rubbish time.
We now go when the kids are at school, and in the week and have a great time. Plenty of room, clean (but basic) facilities, no queues for the showers or loos and quiet and considerate campers.
This place is really like no other, but you've got to pick you're time to go. There are extremes - from the South end dunes, with the secluded spots in the trees, to the north end harbour with fantastic views of the setting sun - its both diverse and beautiful.
From crab fishing on the causeway with your children (as I did as a child too) to evening walks on the beach. Or beach fires toasting marshmallows - just great memories!
But - we've been when the toilets have been blocked and the chavs have been partying until the wee hours, and queued for an hour for a shower. But, as I said we just pick our times.
We are just back from a 4 day break and the weather was so bad we came back a day early - but that's not the fault of the site. Just bad luck and if this was our first visit I'm sure we would be disappointed.
We've been to many more sites across the uk, and the main thing that this site has as an advantage is the non-regimented way it let's you camp. It's just a real shame some take advantage of that unique feature.

A camp-site from my youth.
It was fantastic in the 90's.
Sadly, it has become chavsville.
Facilities are worn-out and dirty.
Not a single toilet had toilet roll and the queue for the male showers was pathetic.
During peak season they put porta-loos around the site. Mmm that smell on a hot sunny day.
The other bad thing is they don't take bookings, once its full (and I mean full) they don't allow further tents.
This really annoyed me when I travelled for 3. 5 hours on a Friday afternoon to be told the site was full.
Luckily we stumbled across Barcdy Camp-site in Harlech which is our favourite site.
Such a shame :-(

This was our third visit to Shell island. My ten year old grandson loves the place; crabbing, fishing, the games room! he really loves it! It does get very busy, especially around the reception area and shops but there is so much room to escape that this should not be a problem.
My main concern this trip was the bad language encountered. I am not a prude and can swear with the best of them, but we encountered wall to wall swearing that seemed to be the norm. On one side of us where a family group of at least three generations and about seven tents. The older members of the group were the worst. We counted sentences with five f words, the c word and the t word. We were woken up at 7. 30 am by profanity from people who saw no problem with punctuating every sentence with at least five f words, in front of their children. On the other side was a group who also swore, shouted and argued loudly, destroyed their own camping gear and punched the doors of their vans??
This site - the place is wonderful. The clientele (some, not all) on the other hand are vile.
We did also meet lovely people.

Lovely island with natural beauty, had a great time. Lovely walks, sand dunes, beaches covered in shells and harbour for endless hours of crabbing. Stunning beaches all down the coast and near to lovely villages of Barmouth and Harlech.
The downside. The toilets/shower block. It is a huge site and it is basic camping (no EHU), but we are in 2012 and hygiene is essential, spend some money and sort the facilities out! At least double the capacity, open them for longer hours, make sure the work and clean them regularly.

We used to come camping here about 20 years ago, and always had a good time.
Pro's
Plenty of space
Close to beautiful beach
Shops on site cater for all your needs
Cons
Toilets could do with cleaning regularly
Showers could be cleaner
We went in June for 2 nights. Touched really lucky with the weather. Couldn't believe how quiet it was. We were the only tent in our field!
Had a relaxing drink in the bar, which was pleasant.
All in all, if the toilets and showers were cleaner, this would be perfect!
