Very popular site and was full for Easter by 1pm Friday. Cheap to stay but corners are cut to keep it this way.
Toilets don't have their own water supply so when the water runs out. With the 'Ladies' out of action for 24 hrs it was a surprise to find ladies walking behind the 'standing' section.
Fantastically peaceful situation. Would go back now I know what to expect!

Me and my family (husband and a 2 and 4 year old) stayed at Shell Island over the Easter weekend. We decided to arrive on the Thursday afternoon to beat the rush as we anticipated that it would be busier on the Friday.
There was plenty to do and keep the kids occupied with the beach and the play area, even though this was a little old for them to play in properly. The beach was brilliant and we spent lots of time collecting shells, playing in the sea, building sand castles etc.
The toilet and shower cubicles were acceptable, although the ques for them in the mornings were very long and coming out of the doors.
One thing that I did notice was that some of the rules stated on Shell Island's website were broken by others during my stay. E.G. Camping within 20 meters of another tent, no single sex groups (which there seemed to be a lot off!) and radios off after 11pm. But I'm not sure if this was due to it being a Bank Holiday weekend as this was my first stay there.
To sum it up both myself and my family enjoyed our stay at Shell Island, but I don't think we will be returning for a while.

This is a beautiful area, with sand dunes, flat sandy beaches and quaint little villages close by.
I went with my husband, 8 yr old son, dog, my sister & her husband & 12 yr old daughter & my mum - we were in 4 tents with 2 loo tents.
Choosing to camp in 'the coves' area, we had a superb view of the sea, and tolerated the accompanying windiness. We spotted dolphins jumping their way through the waves several times, which was magical.
The shops were very good. There were usually long queues at the showers, being a very busy bank holiday, and the sinks in particular were filthy. I preferred to take a tub of hot water into our loo tent for a wash.
There were other people around us with youngsters, which was great, but the peace at night time was invariably spoilt by revellers playing loud music well after 11pm. Virtually every night we were wakened in the early hours of the morning by people running around shouting & smashing bottles.
One night, late on, we heard some people running past (2am or thereabouts) shouting for security, because, as announced hysterically at great volume, 'The thieving ****s have stolen my mobile'. This 'victim' & however, wasn't above shining his torch into our tent porches and actually unzipping my sister's tent (and leaving it unzipped) presumably in his effort at locating the thief / thieves!
Luckily for him, my husband would require 20 min's to scramble out of his sleeping bag & have a couple of coffees before being up to assessing the situation & challenging anyone for these antics!
Another night, some youths next to us arrived back to their tent at around midnight, and proceeded to play music, talk & giggle loudly, pomp their car horn, have a farting competition, and light a fire close to our tent - thus illuminating our sleeping pods! I got up to go to the loo, and had to promptly dance about on the large, floating embers that threatened our tent, since the dolts were putting sheets of paper on the fire and watching them drift around. In the morning we discovered they'd burned through one of our guy lines. Fortunately, they packed up & left the next day.
On our last night there, there was a bit of a gale blowing, making everything rattle & flap noisily. In the early hours of the morning, as I lay longing for sleep, I became aware of a torch flicking on & off around our tent. I knew this had to be somebody up to no good, so I wriggled out of my sleeping bag, clad only in an oversized T-shirt & knickers. As I was about to leap out, there was the distinctive sound of someone tripping inside my porch, and knocking my cooker almost off its stand. I shouted, 'Oy', & launched myself outside into the windy, chill night as fast as I could, tripping & stumbling & getting the zip fast en-route. My little jack russell accompanied me, and my husband eventually awoke (probably because I'd stood on his head during my flailing attempt to get out fast)and followed. The perpetrator had escaped, taking with him an unopened bottle of cognac which I'd left secreted in the porch.
I'm glad to say that my little boy slept through this incident, which is very lucky, because it would have frightened him from going camping again.
This was our 1st camping trip and we won't be going back! It's a pity, because it's a lovely place.
Take heed - if you go here, you need to take ear-plugs!
Now we intend to stick to smaller sites that are easier for the owners to manage satisfactorily.

After 17 years we decided to take camping back up and visit Shell Island as our first outing. Absolutely loved it the weather was perfect we could choose where we wanted to pitch, got a lovely spot overlooking the sea.
We had a whole field to ourselves. Campfires are allowed as long as they are off the ground. The porta loos are dotted around the site and had just been cleaned, but we had are own.
The shops on site are very well stocked and the pub is quirky and held a quiz at night for all to join.
Plenty of space for children to play and also a small play area.
The showers are hot and free although they only last about 10 seconds and the you have to repress the on button to continue. You have to check the tide times as this covers the road in and out of Shell Island twice a day.
On the whole a lovely setting with breathtaking views. Will be definitely visiting again and they now have an online booking system.

We have visited this campsite many times; with dogs, with children, with friends, with babies. Some of the best experiences of my life have been here; being woken by the wing beats of swans; seeing all of the stars on the chart of constellations; sitting with my four and two year old around a camp fire drinking mulled wine whilst they sip hot chocolate.
This place is not smart, it is utterly basic but that is its charm. I'm not interested in tales of portaloos or how expensive the campsite shop is, this place is extraordinary. It is a touch of the 1970s in a world weary 2011. I feel that my family experienced the joy of being a bit crap that I loved as a child.
Perhaps go here for a few days rather than a week. I just think that shell island is heaven, It is one of the few places I have ever felt a proper sense of peace and that comes from all of the campfires in the darkness around you - a sense of another time.
Shell island is real.

Visited with 4 adults and 4 kids between 6 and 11.Sat nav takes you straight to it. Lovely approach then straight into bookin office. Pay, put your wristbands on and away you go. Proper camping, find a pitch you like and set up. We had our own little field it was great.
Try and get some cover as we had 40mph winds and had to buy more windbreaks to try for better cover but didn't work,my brothers tent had its canopy ripped off.
Toilet block is ok at best but all that was needed.Porta bogs dotted around but we took our own toilet tents and just emptied each morning. Take toilet roll every time in morning they never had any early.
Fantastic views from top of dunes near beach. Kids played on dunes all week only coming over for snacks. Went crabbing and rock balancing which was good fun. Fires are ace and took our own basket £25 in shop £4 a bag of logs (take an axe so you don't need kindling as that's £4 to).
Went self sufficient with gas fridge but shops has everything you could need. Got chips and gravy from cafe one night which was decent. Had music on at 11.20 one night and warden came over to tell us to turn it down but he was sound about it.
Got to the showers at 8 2 mornings and straight in, 2 mornings about 10 and waited about 15 mins. Little playground near shops for kids. Going again for at least a week next year, maybe 2. Brilliant

Much been said about this site, here's my version!
Firstly, I went when it was very quiet, in fact I could only see one other 'unit' from the camper, which I positioned at the bottom of a sand dune. As a result the space, peace and quiet I had was brilliant.
Much has been said about the beauty of the place and this is without question. Great beaches, harbour, shop and pub. Facilities are basic but for £6 per night - what do you want!
The site is blessed with a lack of rules, almost wild camping, no pitches, no hook up, have a camp fire - great!
However this has its disadvantages over a more organised site.Firstly I can imagine the facilities being stretched at busy times. Litter is an issue and I can imagine some very rowdy nights. Also if busy I wouldn't want my camper next to a load of drunk kids messing about.
Conclusion, brilliant at quiet times, great value, amazing feeling of space. Ideal for a few families, mates going together, or when very quiet. Otherwise book a 'normal' site.
It is what it is, and its unique, but you have been warned!

When we stayed here it was after the school holidays and hence very quiet. We were in a field with only a few other tents.
The toilet block was a little dated but clean but the ladies showers were often lukewarm / cold. The mens on the other hand were too hot!
We had glorious weather when we were there and loved exploring the dunes etc, it really is a stunning place.
There are shops / butchers nearby and Harlech castle just down the road is good.
We loved our stay here but doubt we would enjoy it so much if we stayed in peak season.

We had heard it was a big campsite. It was only after we'd set up our tent and had a walk round that we realised just how big! We only stayed for 3 nights, and it rained most of the time, but we still enjoyed it.
The different shops sell everything you might need. But of course, just like any convenience shop, they are slightly dearer. Although the grocery shop wasn't overpriced. The showers were clean, although I imagine they won't be all the time due to the amount of people using them. I didn't have to queue for a shower, but I didn't go at busy times. There were plenty of toilets in the toilet block, and also portable loos dotted around.
The views around are lovely. My son loved getting up early and walking two minutes to the beach. We had waterproofs and wellies on, so if you're prepared, the weather doesn't spoil your fun. Crabbing just off the road into the campsite was great fun.
It's also a good base to have nice days out. We visited Harlech Castle (which you can see from the beach), Barmouth, Port Merrion and King Arthur's Labyrinth.
Also, the availability of pitches goes by the amount of people, not tents. Which means it isn't over crowded. Some families had more than one tent, or massive tents, but you are only charged per person. It would be great for a few families who want to camp together. Especially if you like open fires and BBQs.

Absolutely love this place. Visited for at least the last 6 years. Been partying with friends in the dunes and partying a little less with kids in the more family orientated bits. Last two or three times we had to leave early because tent damaged due to high winds (but always had a credit pass for next time). This year we were told of weather warning and packed during the day in high wind on our last day to spend rest of hols elsewhere.
We will be back next year though for another try. I think the trick is to pitch in the right area for your party. The bits with families are usually quite quiet at night. But please be realistic and flexible in your expectations.
It's a huge site! If you want silence go elsewhere. Facilities are good for size of site. You need to be up early for shower to avoid queues, or go later am. Never had any probs at all leaving belongings etc. Always got on great with neighbours. Had our first beach fire this time. Fab and photographed some beautiful sunsets. Our 'pitbull' loves it. (if you read all the reviews you'll get the gist. And we're far from chavvy) he loves the freedom, his numerous girlfriends (missed TIA this year) and the odd flavoured ice cream.
Well worth the experience!
