Excellent All-rounder. Has plenty of space. Private beach and Harbour. Great for all ages. Plenty to do nearby in Porthmadog, Harlech (incl castle), Barmouth.
There are shops (everything you need), pub, cafe (incl take-aways), park, plenty of facilities.
A lot like a little holiday destination.
We go often and will go back often.
The campsite rules are good.
My Son is 5 and this is his favourite place. He loves to collect shells on the beach and crabbing at the harbour.

Like others I have read poor reviews on this site!
I can only say I have stayed here now a number of times and have always been impressed with the site.
Clean washing and toilet facility good cafe and bar which is competitively priced, take out pizza is good, site kept rubbish free no regimented pitches plenty of open space or smaller off the beat on track pitches.
Please note the causeway does get covered at high tide do not attempt to cross if the water is over the road I have seen cars and vans get washed off the road, even though it clearly states do not attempt.
Enjoyed our stays there and would recommend it especially for extended family group camping this site is fantastic.

I visited Shell Island in September. The place was practically empty which was lovely as we could pitch up anywhere. The beaches were beautiful and great for collecting shells and flying kites. The shops were all well stocked, if a bit expensive. Toilets/showers were all very clean, but would expect this as the site was near empty. Also the washing up area was nice & clean with plenty of hot water.
We visited Harlech Castle and Porthmadog. Didn't see much else as we were only there for 4 days.
I think the restaurant/bar area could do with a refurb as very outdated.
It is a beautiful place especially when it's quiet, wouldn't like to visit when it's busy. I'm not sure if we will be camping here again as it was very windy the whole time and ended up breaking a few poles on the tent/ windbreak. Since my visit I have been to Nanctol Waterfalls ( 2 miles in land) which was definitely less windy, but would probably visit Shell Island as day tripper instead.

We go to Shell Regularly and are eager to get out camping again at the easter bank hols. True that the facilities do lack somewhat to other sites but they do their job and are cleaned often, on bank holidays when the site is crammed I guess some individuals do unthinkable things in the toilets, but if the guys in reception are informed, it does get rectified pretty damn quick. The campsites chilled out atmosphere is fantastic, we go there for kite buggying along their long beach to Barmouth and back. Lovely place and views are superb morning and night. Looking forward to going there as many times as I can.

We visited Shell Island the first weekend of September. Having got used to a caravan and never camping/caravanning without EHU I really wasn’t sure if I could handle this style of camping at all! That was even before I read the negative reviews about the toilet blocks!
Well guess what – I absolutely loved it! We went with two other families, one who had been several times before and had warned us to take a porta potti as we would be over in the dunes area and away from main loo blocks. Same friends arrived before us and found us an excellent location to the left of some huge dunes leading towards the beach. Me being used to marked out pitches I loved how we could set up any which way we liked and were able to put up a gazebo for our central facilities and basically just spread out a little.
The kids soon headed off into the dunes and apart from food, and sleep I think they spent the bulk of their time in them digging, hiding, rolling, burying – so nice to see all 6 of them enjoying some good old fashion play sans electronic gizmos!
We had mixed weather – well put it this way we established the gazebo was not waterproof in any way and it was weird to be sat in front of a warming fire basket in the evening with droplets of rain dropping on our heads. Then on Sunday the sun came out and we had a fantastic day, playing cricket, badminton, football, crabbing and just chilling in the sun.
I have to say the island was pretty quiet we seemed to have an entire area to ourselves and although we did have mixed weather it was warm enough and we were equipped with enough gas/ battery/wood fuelled appliances to not miss electricity a bit.
Now to the toilet blocks – I can’t speak for the portable loos or portable cabins as I only used the main blocks and drove to them in the day (we were a good 15 mins walk away) and used our own portable loo in the evening. What is all the fuss about regarding showers and toilets here? – well they won’t win loo of the year 2013 but crikey they were spotlessly clean every time I used them and did everything you would expect them to do – the worst crime being people yanking an excess of loo roll to pool on the floor. Yes I have been in much nicer but I have been in so much worse, and I definitely breathed a sigh of relief when I saw them.
As I say it was very quiet and I can’t comment on how some individuals behave here at busier times but we never encountered a single issue with anything or anybody here and we cannot wait to return!

We have been to Shell Island many times, we started to go there as we are a large family and many sites are too restrictive and expensive for us to go to all together, also one of us had spent many a childhood holiday there!
The site is big with many places to explore and camp from sand dunes to cliff edges, sheltered fields and woods. We love to have a sea view but the mountain view is also good. Back to basics here, no hook up, but this is all part of the Shell Island experience. No designated pitches and acres to choose from. It has beaches all around and they are beautiful, last time we were lucky enough to get one of the coveted pitches and were virtually camping on the beach itself.
We love it here and it is our children's favourite place to be.
It does get bad reviews sometimes and we can agree that at bank holidays and busy times it gets really full and facilities are stretched but if you judge the right time to go to the shower you won't be queueing that long and we learnt long ago that its a really good idea to take your own loo, they have a CDP, but there are plenty of loos in the main block and they are really trying hard to improve these by providing better ones around the site rather than the festival types portaloos. They are cleaned regularly, loo roll replenished.
There is a mini supermarket on site along with a gift shop which sells the best ice cream and fudge you'll ever taste and the best flavours! There's a camping shop, cafe, restaurant, pub(never used this so no idea what its like) We can go to Shell Island, park up the vehicles and have everything we need right there, no need to drive the car anywhere, bliss!
We have BBQ's, bonfires with marshmallows, go crabbing, rockpooling, star and satellites gazing(amazing non light polluted skys here), eat tons of ice cream and fudge, play on the beach, relax, build sand castles, paddle in the sea, hunt for wild strawberries and glow worms, see the most fantastic sunsets ever, watch all the different wildlife and even if we're very, very lucky watch the dolphins, they are truly wonderful.
We find all the staff here friendly and helpful and doing there best to run a large and busy campsite.
Often it is the minority of thoughtless campers that spoil someone's holiday, camping too close, loud music and swearing, not looking after the facilities and the staff do try and resolve this. Fortunately we find these campers are the minority and we usually have wonderful holidays here and meet some lovely people.
As other reviews have said go with an open mind, be prepared for the wind and you'll have a fantastic time at the one of the most beautiful and amazing places you'll have ever camped.

Just got back this weekend from a great week at Shell Island.
I have read a lot of negative reviews of the site and in all honesty I just don't get it.
Its true to say they could do with more showers and toilets but since our last visit in 2010 they have installed portable cabin style toilets (with proper loos) across the site which are a vast improvement over the portaloos. The main toilet block has been repainted and what was previously persistent toilet graffiti has gone. Clearly whatever the staff are doing to tackle this sort of problem its working.
The views, beaches and variety of things to do are first rate as always and we found ourselves a nice spot surrounded by other families. It was great to watch all the kids playing together and one sunny afternoon we had a game of cricket with around 20 assorted parents and children.
I have been going to Shell Island since I was four and now go every year with my wife and 3 kids. In January we were talking to them about where to go on holiday and suggested that as we had to miss a holiday last year did they want us to save up and go EuroDisney the instant response was 'What, why can't we go to Shell Island' That says it all as far as far as I am concerned.
Go with an open mind and prepared for a bit of strong wind and you'll find a great site in store.

We visited Shell Island for 1 night over the Jubilee Weekend.
I was a little put off as I booked before reading the reviews, and after reading them was a little dubious about going.
It has to be said though that although we only spent one night there, I really have nothing to complain about!
We found a pitch easily, and although there were some radios being played I didn't consider them to be excessively loud.
The beach is beautiful and my 2 boys had fun on the rocks and the sand dunes.
On the night we didn't visit the 'clubhouse', but sat around our campfire cooking sausages. They had an outdoor event on with a band and a female vocalist, that wasn't the best, but made us laugh. We took a stroll along the sand dunes and sat atop of one watching the Jubilee fireworks going off.
After returning to the tent, we sat waiting for the concert to end, which did so at a reasonable hour, before tucking ourselves into bed. I have to say that this is the bit that I was dreading after reviews of loud noise and late nights, but everyone seemed to be considerate and we had no problems whatsoever getting off to sleep.
The toilets on our field were in a container and were clean and we saw them being cleaned twice.
We didn't use the showers as were only staying one night.
The shops were impressive and not too expensive.
The area seemed to be clean, we had no problems with rubbish or dogs, as previously mentioned in others reviews.
There was a very long queue for breakfast in the morning, but it was reasonably priced and more than adequate.

Just returned home after spending three nights at Shell Island. A friend recommended the site. He has been visiting Shell Island since childhood and now regularly visits with his family. On this latest visit my family and I tagged along. We each have quite large tents and booked two nights in advance. We had no problem finding an area big enough for us all.
I've not been camping long and previous sites seem to be quite regimented, with pitches marked out and everything subject to loads of rules. Shell Island is refreshingly simple. You can pitch wherever you like as long as you're not too close to others.
The site offers amazing contrasts from level fields to snuggley sheltered spots amongst the dunes. We pitched amongst the dunes which offered a bit of protection when the wind picked up. There was a bit of rubbish on the pitch (bottles, bags etc) but it had been recently vacated going off the colour of the grass and I noticed the wardens regularly clearing other vacated pitches.
We spent our days exploring the dunes, sunbathing on the endless beach, crabbing on the causeway and checking out the rock pools. My friend brought his fishing tackle to do a bit of angling by the harbour. We also spent an afternoon chilling by the pub, enjoying a few beers out in the sun. Other campers were friendly, especially the dog lovers who would strike up a conversation on noticing my friends dog.
As others have stated, the facilities are basic but with a pub, games room, shops, playground and cafe all needs are catered for.
We all had a great time and stayed an extra night. Returning home I realised we had only ventured off site once to check out nearby Barmouth, especially a store called 'Big Boys Toys' which sold all kinds of things for the inner child within all us men.
I will definitely return as I feel we only scratched the surface of what the site has to offer (would like to get a dinghy to check out the boating ponds next time).

We've been coming to Shell Island as a family for about 10 years, my husband for much longer since he was a child. This is the first time we bought our motorhome, whilst 2 daughters and boyfriends had tents.
This camp site is in the most beautiful location and there is so much to do if you enjoy the outdoors.
We camped in the dunes so quite far from the main facilities. Hubby and I used our on board facilities and kids used site showers etc.
We all had an amazing time as usual, rock pooling, crab fishing, walking round the island, to the beach, in the dunes etc.
We have stayed at lots of campsites recently, some of which have five star facilities and although the facilities here are basic the location more than makes up for that.
We are quite laid back as a family and have never experienced annoyance from other campers. We go to Shell Island with the sole aim to enjoy ourselves which we always do.
I don't judge my fellow campers and concentrate more on enjoying myself than worrying what other people are up to.
Don't be put off visiting this beautiful site by some of the negative comments. It is the perfect holiday location for children - even grown up ones like mine.
Enjoy the beautiful location, chat with your fellow campers, relax and enjoy!
