Visited Shell Island on recommendations but have to say even though the site was 35% occupied there were hardly any spaces. Hate to think what it would be like when Full! Toilets and facilities were filthy with campers driving 100 metres from their tents to the toilets? Whats all that about? Supposed to be restrictions with loud music and camping near other tents but no one paid any attention at all.
Whilst looking for a spot to pitch there were gangs of youths roaming around drunk deliberately blocking cars at 3:30 in the afternoon! Only spot we could find was by 2 family tents with 6 dogs roaming free. I'm all for camping and meeting people but this was chav city on a beach.
Sorry but not my cup of tea at all. Damn shame as the area looks stunning but I doubt those camping even noticed. I did feel really sorry for two ladies who had camped there and had said to us that a family decided to camp literally touching guy ropes and all they wanted to do was to see the wildlife and have some space. Sadly not the case here on Shell Island. Should have realised something was wrong when the 12 year old on reception was in charge of the money and tickets!

Hi all
Ok just got back from shell island and it's review time.
:D :D All I can say is WOW what a site :D :D
There are certain times of the day when you cant get on shell but we met up with our friends at 8 am on friday morning and the causeway was clear so on we went.
Had to queue in the pouring rain and very strong winds to pay to get in but it didn't take long and we were off on to the site.
The site is the whole of shell island and it is massive :o
We decided to camp on a field not far from the toilets but you can go miles away in the sand dunes and it is impressive to say the least. Look one way and you are looking across the irish sea . Turn around and snowdon is glaring down on you.
The fields are in excellent condition and we were soon pitched. The first day was a wet one but the next four were glorious. You are allowed camp fires in fire baskets and it was great sitting around in a group to past midnight with the fire blazing and the stars shining down as there is no lighting or electric.
The beaches are great, some shells ,some sand as far as the eye can see and rock pools for the kids to explore. The toilets are reasonable (there are a lot of people using them) and there may be a que for the showers at busy times.
The supermarket is a little expensive as is the pub but the restaurant (which must be booked in advance and only opens on Sundays) was absolutely bloody fantastic, with three courses to die for for £13 for adults and £8 for children.
All in all this site is amazing and is a true camping experience which everyone should try. We are already planning next year and may make a full week of it.

Just spent a week at shell island which was our first ever visit there. The site is massive and as a location cannot be beaten. Plus points include no marked pitches and no pre-booking allowed, camping as it should be! You can pitch anywhere you can find space and not within 20 metres of another tent.
However this site has many bad points. We were there when the site was full and had to put up with dirty toilets, dogs off leads and loud music into the night. The first night we got about an hours sleep due to the noise and had to alert the site wardens who sorted out the problem.
There is only one toilet block for the whole site (portaloos can be found around the site, but with no lights so take your torch at night!) resulting in campers driving to the loo and shower. The traffic around the toilets was very bad at times and was a bit of a concern as our children are only 6 and 9. Also the site is supposed to have a policy of couples and families only but we saw countless groups of young people who had come to drink and party so that really needs to be addressed. On the whole we would return simply because the location is so beautiful, but not in peak periods.

Well what an experience. My mate and me went for the last weekend of the season. Halloween night was ok. But. The wind on saturday just got worse all day and the rain the same. Saturday night my tent was flooded. So had to share my mates tent. Due to the fact his is a 5 man tent and mine a two man. Sunday afternoon we came home. Field was a mud bath. What a mess. But, all in all a good time was had by all the people there. As a born again camper, it was a bit of a turn off. But I will be going camping again very soon. Just need a really good tent to withstand the wind and rain. The only problem I found was that you need transport to get to it. No public transport nearby. Anyway, just go in the summer, you will like it. Got to be great in summer and park your car or campervan facing downhill towards the road. Easy to get out when it rains.

Me and my boyfriend have just returned from a camping weekend at shell island, we are full of praise for our stay here. We found the toilets to be very clean at all times, and the shower facilities were also very good. Everyone seemed very friendly and willing to help at all times. The views from our tent were fabulous, the scenery stunning. We loved the little tavern pub on site, full of atmosphere and very welcoming. The shops on site were also very good, with people very friendly and helpful. All in all we had an extremely lovely stay, and cant wait to come back.

The views from the island were magnificent. We enjoyed playing in the arcade and the pub was nice too. We found that the toilet and shower facilities were not very clean and the cooked breakfast we had the next morning tasted very rubbery. We also found the security guards could be quite rude at times.
We had a great view from our tent. At the shops the assistants were very pleasant to us, but for me its the toilet facilities that have put me off going there again, there was grass and mud on the floor, the sinks and toilets were dirty and the tiles in the shower rooms didn't look like they had been cleaned in a long time.

Been to Shell Island a few times over the last couple of years with 2, 3 or 4 other families - you can pitch in a group but have to be 20m away from anyone else unless you check with them first.
Fabulous place, on the beach with the sand dunes and fishing right there (that's if you catch any) but it gets very busy in the summer holidays and especially bank holiday weekends.
Portaloos are pretty grim after a couple of hours but the main toilets and (free) showers are OK considering the number of people that are using them.
Reasonable playground, but our kids and the dogs prefer crabbing on the causeway, the sand dunes, shell collecting, playing on the beach or just going for long, long walks. You can walk all the way to Barmouth (7 miles) along the beach and in August we saw dolphins.
Never tried the bar but it seems popular if you like that sort of thing. Had chips from the takeaway a couple of times and they were OK.
Everything is there on site - laundry room, supermarket, camp shop and gift shop, you don't need to leave if you don't want to.
If the wind gets up, beware - we were there when the unforecast 'hurricane' force winds hit in May - tried to stick it out but in the end had to give up and pack up in 85mph winds. Scary!
Tried the harbour side last visit and it was great sitting in the evenings watching the cars trying to beat the tide across the causeway. Bit quieter on this side too, although just as windy if you can't get a sheltered spot.
No booking available so you take your chance at busy times - you need to be there Thursday morning to get on at bank holidays.
It can get noisy if you're unlucky enough to camp near someone who likes to listen to their car radio at full volume all day and into the night but this can usually be sorted by reporting to the staff.
Overall - if you can pick the right time and the right spot, you couldn't get any better.

Absolutely fantastic site that I would recommend to anyone. Spacious - it has a rule that you have to leave 20ft between neighbouring tents unless you are family / friends - and a wonderful atmosphere in which to relax. The site backs onto the sand dunes and lovely soft beach, and it has toilet / shower facilities and a tavern / cafe and shops. A great place for adults, kids and dogs

Shell island is a beautifully situated site, on it's own peninsular, fabulous beach and huge sand dunes. The site itself is huge, 300 acres apparenlty. With that, there is a lot of choice of where to pitch. Although there were quite a lot of people there when we visited, there was still lots of space, the 20m rule seemed to work pretty well. The shops seemed to be well stocked.
For such a beautiful site, it is let down by the following; the portaloos are rather grim, I am not sure if they stay during the low season. I have to admit, we did not try the showers as people we spoke to on the beach said they were rather dirty. The memorable aspect for me was the amount of litter; it was all over the place. A reasonable supply of bins around so there was no excuse. At the complex, and in particular the kiddies playground area were awful. I was disappointed as would love to return, and have heard so many good things about this place, but it just isn't looked after as it deserves.

Been yet again to shell and as always an amazing place appart from the toilets but with a big place as that and at busy times it's to be expected. Take your own
Great to meet the gang and have a few drinks.
Went for a walk on the beach and found a dead porpoise went to report it to Rich co-owner and he saw to it that the council picked it up.
And I've already said but I love this place and will be going again in oct for the last weekend and the celebrations
KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK
