Stumbled across shell island about four years ago, and cantt stop coming back. Try to get there at least 4/5times a year.
Bad points, loos and showers(or lack of ) there showers and lots of porta loos, enough for what I need, but many say there aren't enough. The loose are emptied and cleaned regularly.
Good points, no pitches, you finds your spot and pitch up, there is always space to find a little quiet corner somewhere. Beautiful beaches, all varied from sand through to little rock pools,
Can't praise it enough, will defo be back

Home from home for us :) we try to go at least 4-5 times each season. Can get very busy on bank holidays and school holidays. Facilities are quite basic and loos can get yucky when site busy, portaloos are a no go area for us! Staff on Shell are not the friendliest bunch except for the gents in the gatehouse as you enter or exit, they are really nice.
Children love the sand dunes and the play area and beach, there is also a cafe for breakfast, lunch not too unreasonably priced. Will stay here again and again, can't beat Shell for a versatile camping site.

We regularly visit Shell island. We love to come here for relaxed, informal camping. There are no marked pitches, so you just choose your spot and that's it. You can get sea views, go into the remote dunes area, or stay on the fields nearer to the facilities. Check in is always quick and friendly; there is a well stocked mini market, camp shop, snack bar and tavern which serves real ale and sometimes has entertainment.
The scenery here is stunning. The mountains of Snowdonia form the back drop and the site has direct access to the beach.
Another advantage is that you can stay on your pitch all day on departure day, there is no silly check out time. The whole atmosphere is free and easy.
Downsides? Yes, there are a few. There is no electric hook-up; the facilities are a bit basic and the site can get a bit scruffy during busy times.

When my kids decided they wanted to try camping, I had a few problems. I didn't want their first experience to be of a sitting in a tent watching rain fall down past the door for the whole holiday. Therefore I needed a site that was easy to book at the last moment, so I could use the weather forecast to pick the right 3-4 day slot. I found Shell Island from an old list of campsites in The Independent website, I then checked the site out on here (after a friends recommendation).
Everything looked good, no issues with last minute booking. Large site with the required facilities. I made the booking.
We arrived early evening in the last throes of a mild shower (expected) to friendly staff at the reception and a large choice of spacious plots to choose from. We finally picked on one near the beach (bit gusty but great view) and must say we had a great 3 days. The location is superb for Snowdon and the kids had great fun body surfing at the beach (beware the submerged rocks, there is a large warning sign but for some reason being written on a large water butt did not get our attention - the staff drove up to point out the issue but a normal red coastguard type sign might be better). Showers were perfectly adequate, as were the large number of toilets (although one portaloo was a bit disgusting one morning).
All in all, it was a great introduction to camping. So good, we went somewhere else the following week!

We had a great weekend again on Shell Island weather was a bit up and down but who cares, it always a fun pace to camp. Good facilities. Nice food if you don't Fancying having to cook. Great beach that goes for miles.
Good if you like to visit Snowdonia or just going to have a look around, there is always plenty to do or visit,
We as a family have stayed on Shell Island for the past 30 years for short weekend and for 1 / 2 weeks every year. We love it. Would recommend to you all,
Go to Shell Island and have a good time Happy Camping.

Visited bank holiday weekend with my 6 and 9 year old and the site was quite full as I expected. It is a very large site and I chose a nice flat pitch near one of the lovely beaches. I had a nice quiet weekend due to the 20 meters pitching apart rule which meant I could have a campfire and play some music without disturbing others. There is a small park, excellent shop, cafe that serves very nice food, and a bar (did not use). There are excellent beaches and views and 24 hour on site security making it feel very safe. The toilets and showers were dirty and several large skips of rubbish around the site looked unsightly however it was probably their busiest weekend of the year. I really like this site as it has a wild camping feel. My kids loved all the open space, crabbing in the harbour and the 30 second walk to and from the beach was great. Also the weather was wonderful. We were in the sea and sat around the campfire as the sun went down. I would definitely return but if you like spotless shower and toilets its not for you.

When we arrived, my immediate thoughts were that it looked a bit holiday camp like. Yes there was a queue to book in, but the staff were apologetic, and very helpful. Told be to chose where I wanted to pitch, pointing out that there were some no dog areas.
Once I got to my pitch, the whole 'holiday camp' thing disappeared.
We pitched with spectacular views over the bay.
Short walk down a path to the rocky part of the beach - with lots of rock pools to explore. My daughter loved it when the shrimps nibbled her feet.
Short walk and you came to the bathing beach,
The weather permitted us to play with the body boards. There were other beaches and the causeway but we didn't bother with these. Families were obviously enjoying themselves crabbing on the causeway
We didn't bother with the bar, although we did get a pizza which was pricey but nice. One thing tat we did get was ice creams, as they were very nice.
The staff in all the shops were very helpful. As there is no EHU, the site offers ice pack freezing service. £3 deposit and then 50p per frozen icepack.
The once criticism that I have, was that there was insufficient showers/toilets/cdps for the size of the site. I was chatting to somebody else while queuing for the CDP, and they said that this seemed to be a grumble among a lot of people - and the site was nowhere near full at this point.

Decided 3 weeks ago to go to shell island again(last time was the 80's. Booked over the internet & had a booking No. Didn't have a problem when I arrived on site; just went into office & told to park anywhere. The staff were pleasant enough at the time. Found a average flat pitch with walking distance to office/shops/beach. (600yds)each direction. Price in shop was on par with other supermarkets in area. Decided to buy their 'internet' because mine didn't work. Theirs only worked by the office & they DON'T give refunds even you don't try it. I've all
My facilities on board so I didn't have to use their showers / toilets (although I heard the family next to me saying there was a 35min wait) I walked to barmouth on Saturday (8miles it think) across beaches inc a naturist beach 2miles away then through fields / campsites / across a river/another campsites the on the main road. 4 1/2hour then I caught the train back to llanbedr & a long walk back to the site. I think the weather made it a pleasant bank holiday.
My only gripe is the ignorant noisy people around the site after the 11 o/clock 'kerfew' some noise went on till 4or 5 in the morning. I'll go there again with the motorhome sometime but I wouldn't take my tent because of proper lack of facilities although for 7-50 per night what can you expect!

I last holidayed to Shell Island 24 yrs ago as a child and it was amazing! Unfortunately I shouldn't have returned in peak season, as it was disappointing. I honestly feel this review would be completely different if we'd gone out of season. The website states not to pitch within 20m of another tent (unless you know them!), but it was ram packed like sardines. We spent an hour and a half trying to find a pitch! Don't arrive on a Saturday!
We had two large groups next to us, but it was a nice pitch nestled among the sand dunes. We were kindly warned by someone from one group that they were both rowdy groups, but we didn't have much choice. Our daughter will sleep through anything and I had ear plugs!
The beach is still stunning, but we were severely let down with the state of the whole island. I'm not sure if it's because we were the furthest you could almost be from the portaloos (which were pretty yucky, but always had loo roll and were cleaned each morning. We didn't go to Shell Island for the facilities!), furthest away from the bins, etc but there was so much litter everywhere :o(
We went out for the day on the Monday, when we came back one of the large groups had gone. They'd left a fire pit (half a drum/barrel thing) set on breeze blocks smouldering away with an airbed in it stinking of burning plastic and so much litter. We felt reluctant to let our nearly three year old run around, not knowing if there could be glass etc. People don't seem to have any respect for the site.
We just felt that it was way too overpopulated and not enough staff to manage it. We would go back, but definitely not in the school holidays.

Poor, poor, poor facilities. 300 odd acres making it Britains biggest campsite and it has 1 shower block. We went midweek for a few days in August and the site was only at 50% capacity yet there were queues for everything. My friend had to queue for the toilet, we had to queue for the bar as they only had two staff on and 500 people wanting drinks. I was there for three days and had to resort to strip washing in the tent as every time I tried the shower block there was a minimum of five people queueing up. I can't and don't want to imagine how bad this gets when the site is at full capacity. I enjoyed the holiday and enjoyed the novelty of the tidal road access to it, but I WILL NEVER GO BACK.
