Reviews, as everyone else.
Good links on their site regarding when you can and can't get over the road due to the tide.
Week days I would say are better as the usual low life can reside at weekends, you know, corsa and polo or golf engines being taken to the rev limit, why, cos there is a bit of sand about and if they try really hard they will. Wheel spin, and everyone will look around and think. ?
During the week I think things calm down, proper serious respectable campers are left to dodge the glass and strange tissues that lurk.
Seriously though it's a great place, loads of space but can fill up, avoid Fridays and saturdays.
The camp shop and supermarket are really good.
Didn't bother with the showers after reading other reviews.
Number one rule for yourself, keep your eye on the weather. I left a day early, yesterday, it was beautiful, I should have left today. Today's weather is heavy rain, 29mph winds with gusts up to 44mph. That's not camping weather. It's worth losing a nights fee.

Worried if we could not get a pitch I paid the extra money and did the online booking which I now regret. I stayed here with my boyfriend for what was meant to be two nights in the middle of july and as a couple who likes peace and quite came here for its beauty but after I booked I then read some reviews and became worried that this wouldn't be the experience in which we were looking for. The staff at the front desk were polite and we began our search for the perfect site as I wanted sea views. Unfortunately these parts tend to fill up quickly and the 20 meter rule is abandoned. The wind was very strong so we found a sheltered spot in an empty-ish field. The sun came out and we enjoyed our first day the beach is amazing the toilets are clean. The porterloos were ok but take hand sanitizer as the sinks didn't work. That night we were kept up until past four by rowdy teens in the field next to us and in the morning on my way to the loo I was greeted with the sight of the remnant of a tipped over portaloo.
Our 2nd day we came back from a day out at Portmerion which I thought was a bit of a rip off and the weather was awful, there were tents flattened with broken poles we ended up packing up our tent in the pouring rain out of fear it may break. We went and stayed at the Victoria, the pub you see before you turn off for shell island which we recommend for food and was a great bnb. This holiday was very mixed we may come back but it will be during the week and no were near school holidays its such a shame people have to ruin it for others and if you go be prepared for strong wind and take heavy duty long pegs the soil is sandy and they rip up easily. We never used the on site shop so cant comment and we couldn't find a supermarket close by.

Went to shell island on 21st July and it was fantastic, really fantastic, the weather helped but the place is great, loads of room to pitch and the kids just loved the amount of space to play. The facilities are adequate but we took our own toilet and it proved invaluable in saving the legs hiking to the portaloos. Take the ' do not pitch within 20 metres' golden rule with a pinch of salt though, we pitched opposite the sand dunes and the views from the top of them was amazing. I think they should have an ice cream van touring the site once or twice a day, and if they had a pizza shop/kebab shop on site they would be awesome money spinners! All in all a great time had by all and we will be going back

Went to Shell Island again in August in our folding camper. We booked for a week from the 19th and then paid for the extra days over the bank holiday as we weren't sure if we were going to stay. As usual had a fantastic time.
We don't seem to have all these problems that others seem to suffer, maybe we have just been lucky, or we have a higher tolerance level. If anyone is playing music after 11pm and I can hear it, then I report it to security. I also report the people that use generators, have out of control dogs and those that pitch within 20 metres of us without asking. They are told to move. If you don't let security know there are problems how can they deal with them?
Timing is everything when visiting the showers - get up early - 7am is a good time (about an hour before they 'open').
Toilets are OK, could be better but that's the people using them, not the site's fault. They are cleaned often enough.
Didn't use the bar- we take all our own beer. Didn't use the cafe. Hubby went up for the first time in all the years we 've been going there to watch the United match, but left in disgust after 20 mins when an old lady from the Midlands sat in front of him and started sucking her chips up. Ha ha.
Used the dryers in the laundry room after getting soaked one day. £1 for 20mins and dried jeans/hoodies etc. Shops were fine as usual.
Being on the beach, it's a very sandy and free draining site, so if it does rain, everywhere soon dries up and it's rarely muddy underfoot. Wanted to try and have a good look around Barmouth while we were there this time and maybe walk across that bridge but for some daft reason chose Bank Holiday Monday to go. We couldn't park and then got stuck behind a biker rally! Went to Portmadoc one day - won't be going there again.
Fish were caught, crabs were caught, sand dunes were climbed, sunrises and sunsets were watched, marshmallows (and haribos?) were toasted, bacon was grilled and cars were watched racing the tide over the causeway. Our last day was glorious, beachfishing all afternoon and then we brought the barbeques and food down to the beach and had tea watching the sun go down before lighting our last campfire. Best of all we packed away dry the next day.
We will be back and it will be in the school holidays or at weekends, because we have kids and can't go any other time.

Overall had a lovely time went with family, friends and dogs. The people at the gate and reception were chatty and polite. We didn't pre book online, but had no problems and finding a pitch on a field with very few other tents was quick and easy, however the field filled up extremely quickly with the 20 metre rule clearly at the back of some peoples minds. The beach is great and kept considerably clean. A few things however I think the staff could possibly think about altering to make the experience that little bit more comfortable. I myself have two dogs and adhered to the dogs on leads rule throughout the week we were there however a large majority of the dog owners did not and several times I had dogs that ran over to me seemingly from no where which if I had been a young child could've been very dangerous therefore this rule should be enforced much more by the staff. Around the site are portacabins with toilets and I was shocked to learn whilst queueing for the one ladies toilet in the portacabin that the men had two toilets, two urinals and a mirror whilst women's facilities had one toilet and one sink, there is a large main toilet block but the portacabins are there as the walk to this block is quite long from some areas of the site so possibly some thought into the layout of these cabins is needed. Another issue was in the main shower block where in each cubicle there is a bench and hooks to put clothes and towels and then you can walk into the shower, however maybe a shower curtain would be a nice touch as the items left on the bench gradually got wet throughout the shower which got increasingly annoying as the week progressed. Despite these minor issues the week was fun, the site was nice and the whole group enjoyed our stay.

Have been a regular visitor to Shell Island, camped there since my children were young. After missing a few years we took some friends last year. What a disappointment.
The site is now very noisy with parties and music played until the early hours, staff used to crack down but seldom bother now.
The site is overrun by dogs, as it is one of the few left that accept dogs there are hundreds of them, this particularly causes a problem by the shop, cafe and bar area. There was a huge dogfight with one animal very badly hurt, children crying and some adults threatening each other.
A shame it has turned out this bad, it still is a beautiful area of Wales but best find another site. Unless of course your a party mad dog owner.

Been going to Shell island for nearly 30 years.
Tend to try and go out of school holidays when it's not so busy.
Beaches, fishing, Dolphins and views make up for poor state of toilet facilities although these have been greatly improved out on site since we last visited.
Decent shops to buy all you groceries or camping needs and restaurant and bar on site.
If you want a club site - this is about as opposite as you'll get. No regimentation, hookups ect.
Some fantastic quiet pitches if you look.
Gets very windy sometimes and tents do get wrecked.
But - my favourite site ever and I hope I'll still be going in another 30 years.

My partner and I went to Shell Island for 3 nights, Wednesday to Saturday. We read lots of reviews before we went and we think we can sum the place up pretty well. Fantastic location, lovely beach, more than decent showers and loos, loads of space, lots of considerate people leaving plenty of room between tents - during the week that is. Things changed somewhat on the Friday afternoon as it became busier and I suspect will change again once the kids holidays begin. In a nutshell, Shell Island is a great place but if you want peace and quiet I would think twice about going at the weekend or during the school holidays.

Last year we visited shell island.
We live in Birmingham so it was around 2hrs to drive there. All I have to say is it was brilliant. We stayed here as a way of sending of our tent before moving to trailer.
The island is massive and beautiful the weather was amazing and the fresh smell of the sea and the gentle lapping of the sea was a great start to the music.
Very, very nice facilities that are adequate. Although, This place has no electrical hook up (Due to size) It is a brilliant place definitely would go back.

What a fantastic week we had ! That includes the Misses, our 20 month old little ( explorer ) boy and the new addition to the family Ally the sha-pei cross puppy ! Plenty of room to play and run and very quiet and clean the week we were there ! Yes the porto loos can become messy but that is down to the people that use them. The sand dunes and beaches were lovely, whatever your taste either it be swimming, crabbing or fishing or just for early evening walks watching the sun go down. Just remember about the tides we got caught just the once but it wasn't a problem as we just went out for tea that evening !
