August 2005 Just got back from Shell after having spent 3 nights there. What a pity it could be such a lovely site but for; overflowing portaloos and skips, too few showers, the queues were ridiculous, the main toilet block was not in good order. So why did we stay, because you have to pay at reception before you can get on site to have a look and the weather was brill! We wont be returning in a hurry shame because it could be so nice.

July 2005 This was our first visit to Shell Island and what a fantastic place this is! Our two boys and my teenage niece found something to do all day, whether it was swimming in the amazing waters or having a game of rounders with the other 10 or so childeren that came to join in! Not once did we hear the kids say they were bored. We spent two weeks at this well kept place and the only fault we have is that the portaloos were only cleaned out every couple of days but the rest of the island more than makes up for this. We would certainly go back there as it has everything you could want from a family holiday and who could resist watching the dolphins swimming in the morning! WE LOVE IT!!

July 2005 Spent the last few days at Shell Island - a fantastic place!! We are regular visitors and, each time we go, we find something new to explore. This time it was the hundreds of crab pools along the causeway leading to the main entrance - couldn't get the kids away from there!! Its a fantastic place, very well maintained and the warden is forever patrolling in his landrover. The 11pm noise limit is strictly adhered to as the warden drives around to check for any noise after this time. A very relaxing place with fantastic beaches and views and just so much space. Well stocked grocery and outdoor supply store, plenty of portaloos anda nice big shower block (showers get busy but no probs if you are early risers!) Plenty of nice long dog walks and no problems with neighbours due to the 20 metre between tents rule. RECOMMENDED SITE!!

July 2005 Just came back from two nights, had a fantastic time. As you enter the camp we turned left and camped near the sand hills, great for the kids to play on. The beach was a short walk over the hills. Plenty of portaloos around the place, needed emptying more often. Proper toilet block fine but a bit far to keep going to. Shower block clean but very busy. Amenities great but food in cafe could have been warmer. At 14 pounds a night for a family of 4 great place to camp.

July 2005 All the hype about how good this place is just disappointed us. We are relatively new campers with 2 kids and a dog in tow. Found it just a bit too noisy, lots of young people in groups (suped up cars and loud stereo's), the kids enjoyed themsleves but found it difficult to sleep. Facilities are very basic and the pub wasn't really up to much either. It is a lovely site to go for a night every now and again, but to be honest would have been much better smaller. I've heard the site in Llanbred just before the shell isalnd turn off is meant to be good, it too is basic but has a stream and waterfall to wash in! Yay great outdoors or what? We'll try that one next time.

July 2005 Agree with other reviewers, what a place! 2nd time we have visited and can't wait to go back. Yes you may have to queue for the showers, but we went around 7am and did not need to queue, the main thing is they are clean.
The views are stunning and the beaches are lovely and clean. The site was full by Saturday but we still had loads of space only 10 tents in the large field we camped in.
Only down side a party of ravers decided to crank the music up at 10pm until midnight - normally not a problem but the Crazy Frog!!!!!
Would highly recommend this site.

April 2005 Just a quick summary of and the rules for staying on Shell Island are...
1. Make sure you get a tide timetable so you know when you can enter and leave the Island 2. the campsite is huuugggeee so if toilet trips for you are frequent stay near the reception!! 3. Wardens are always driving round the Island to make sure the fires are ok and everyone is safe (peace of mind for us parents!!) 4. Barmouth and Porthmaddoch are a short drive away if any extra supplies are needed and are cheaper than site shop 5. If taking kids then definitely recommend taking stuff to entertain them as apart from vastness there is little else 6. Single sex parties, rowdyness and excessive noise will not be tolerated..bad for the teens, good for us mums who's kids can get a good nights sleep!!
All in all a great place to stay and you can pitch up wherever you like as there is plenty of room, choose from sand dunes to grass to camp on and the sea views are amazing. Lots to do within the area too!! :D

June 2005
10 o'clock on Friday night, drizzling, dark, putting up the tent on our first family camping trip. Is this what it's all about? Wake Saturday morning, weather is warm, view is spectacular, can hear the sea from the tent. This is what it is all about!!! Plenty of room to camp, beaches stretching further than you can see, dunes for the kids to play in, rockpools to explore, shops for all your needs, portaloos, water points, bins and beautiful views. Shell island is fantastic, we only visited for the weekend and can't wait to return, possibly next week!!!!!!!!!!! Would love to be able to say the place was terrible to keep you all away...................................GO, IT IS INCREDIBLE!!!!

May 2005 visited the island once again , 2nd time this year . it is without doubt one of the best sites for freedom that i have used . unfortunately the only downside are some of the people who use and abuse this site , rubbish left anywhere ,noise at unsociable hours , gangs of young campers with little or no thought for others , maybe the reception should police there camping policy a little better regarding what type of groups camp there . apart from that it is still a wonderfull place.

August 2004 Go once or twice a year. Brill site, loads of space. Great place for kids - lots to do. Brill having camp fires and watching the stars with a beer in your hand. Friendly staff in shops who make you welcome. Cafe club okay but we prefer staying at camp havin a barbie and a beer. A long way to travel without being able to reserve but well worth it.
