Just got back and probably the worse camping site Ive been to.
Its big but that's the downside! The facilities do not accomodate the capacity: queues for the toilets / shower / washup facilities can be anything up to 1h at prime time! The shop is far far too expensive and understocked.
Security is a bit poor. We had someone partying (loud music, car revving, shouting etc) all the way up until 3am. And they did nothing! Rubbish was strewn along the campsite and the '20m rule' just doesn't get enforced!
Campsite poorly signposted for the beach/exit/shop!
Never again!

Just returned from a weeks holiday at Shell Island, superb surroundings! The beach is just minutes away, however our children were more interested in the sand dunes. Which are fantastic to sledge down, however the vast area of sand dunes are in desperate need of a thorough clean. Glass, beer cans and general rubbish are scattered randomly. Although it is accepted that this is the respinsiblity of the holiday makers and not the management. We feel the managment should patrol and clean the dunes several times daily as this could lead to a serious incident!
The site could benefit from more showers, as queing at 8.30 am in the rain is not fun, yet the view while you wait is fantastic! The toilet block is relatively clean, however could do with an update, surely with the income visitors generate this is possible????
We would recommmend Shellisland as a great holiday for all ages, BUT don't forget your crocs for the sand dunes.

Was given recommendation by friends. Sorry I listened, the list of what is wrong with this place is endless, its filthy, noisy, full of chavs, extremely windy constantly, toilets had blood saliva faeces and other bodily secretions plastered up the walls. The queues for the minimalist showers were constant and very long!.
The shop was pricey. To make matters worse we had the tent attacked by marauding youths and it was damaged and slashed whilst we were out for the day. Nice! not.
Without doubt the worst holiday I have ever had and would implore you to find another campsite on that stretch of coastline if you must go there. Cars racing round doing handbrake turns, large groups of lads and girls having raucous drunken abusive parties till all hours. And as for the 'rules'. Completely ignored nor enforced. I will never go there again. The beach and surrounding sand dunes were litter strewn and full of broken bottles so no nice moonlit strolls without sturdy walking shoes! be warned.

Visited Shell Island for a day about 3 years ago and thought it looked an interesting place to camp so this year I set off with two ten year olds on a Monday morning. When we got there we decided to pitch near the dunes which is quite a way from the shop and bars but the sands were more interesting for us. The shops seem to stock just about everything and whilst expensive if you had to drive around to other shops any savings would be lost on petrol.
The kids loved playing in the dunes and on the beach, making new friends and having a campfire, which are allowed as long as they're not on the ground damaging the grass.
Sure the portaloos are not ideal but building toilet blocks all over the island would spoil it. I admit as a man I don't have to sit on the seats often though!
We only really saw family groups and couples and weren't surrounded by party goers or noisy families so either we were lucky or other reviewers have been unlucky with their choice of pitch.
Harlech and Barmouth aren't far away, the latter has lots of small shops if that's your thing.
£26 for two nights seemed reasonable for the location if nothing else, we only left because we thought the weather was turning and wish we'd stayed another night at least with hindsight.
It was windy when it came to packing the tent away but had been Ok the two nights we were there a bit of rain, some sun but that's the summer of 2010 for you, not the island's fault!

Just got back from 4 nights camping on Shell Island after an excellent recommendation from a friend.
The surrounding area is among the most fantastic scenic area I have seen with loads to do, such as great beaches, the Ffestiniog steam railway and Portmerion etc.
The site is huge and you have to check the tide times to avoid disappointment on arrival as the road is cut off twice a day by the high tide.
You can pitch anywhere on the site as long as you are no closer than 20 metres from another tent and certain parts are dog free areas. We decided to pitch quite close to the facilities as we have young children.
The actual site itself was nothing short of huge disappointment. For £20 a night the toilet block was filthy with 10 (ish) showers for Europe's largest campsite. The portable loos where disgusting and we refused to allow our children anywhere near them. None of the so called 'rules' of the campsite are enforced. People pitch too close, single sex groups are plentiful and noise is too much too late. It would also seem that the UK's entire 'chav' population seem to descend on to the campsite.
We would 100% return to this beautiful area of Wales.
We would 100% never return to shell island.

A beautiful site with some basic facilities, even though the facilities are not good the site more than makes up for it we have been there a few times over the years and will be visiting again. The pitches can be a bit uneven and at the lower end of the site near the estuary it can flood in heavy rain. The toilet blocks can be a long way from some pitches. There is a nice bar / cafe on the site for an evening out without having to drive back and small shops on site that save having to go out to the nearby towns. There can be a problem with the tides cutting off the site for a few hours each day.

This was our fifth visit to Shell Island in the last 5 years. Despite the sites shortfalls, there is something about the campsite that makes us keep coming back; the children love the sand dunes and crabbing, the beach is lovely and we have great nights in front of the fire. However some people are causing the problems that spoil it for decent people. Litter everywhere, loud people and music, disgusting toilets (its the way that they are abused as well as not cleaned too well), dangerous sand dunes (broken glass and rusting cans everywhere), dog poo, the list goes on
Despite all this, as I said there is something about the position of the site that keeps us coming back, and undoubtedly we shall return again next year until we can find another campsite that has the same local environment to offer.

Shell Island for us is a site with enough open space for the kids and dogs and more importantly only 1.5 hrs from home. When we went earlier in the year it was a last minute 'we're doing nothing else this weekend, so lets get some fresh air' decision.
Having been there many, many years ago as a kid with my parents and the Combicamp 2000 that got battered all week by the wind I was initially apprehensive with all those child hood memories flooding back.
Got there fairly early evening on the Friday and quickly discovered that its probably better to have a dog, if not a dog then just pitch in the dog only areas, this seems to be away from the Groups of weekend partygoers and tended to have a lot less punters.
Weather was surprisingly good and even the gazebo made it through the weekend without any extra modifications.
Shop is expensive, but as mentioned before its is a very captive audience, plenty of spares and repairs available also if you do suffer damage to your accommodation though.
Beach is not the best, but it does the job ideally for the kids and dog to go mental on, but we did manage to get some quality sleep in on the sunday afternoon when the sun finally tried to do its worse to my bald head.
All is can say is try it out, take some long pegs with you and camp in the dog section (unless you don't like dogs of course). One other wonderful thing about the site now is that if you pay for a week and leave early, they keep the rest of your site fees on credit, its cheaper to block book a week, so if you do intend to do a number of visits in a year, pay for a week and leave early.

Lovely location, the people who run it were friendly. Visited many years ago and it was brilliant everything you wanted for a holiday. But in 2010 the toilets and showers were a disgrace, everyday two hour queues to use the showers, if you want a shower be there for 6am. To try and get ahead of the queues.
Not enough showers in the toilets for the amount of people. Real shame because place is beautiful, but are allowing far to many campers on site for the facilities that they have.
Very loud music to the left of the island where the younger campers go, if you want a bit of peace from it go to your right when you are on the island. Bit of a worry that at night time there are Chinese lanterns everywhere counted ten in the air at one time just frighted that they could have landed on the tent or car.

Beautiful island, clean facilities, cheap cafe, bar, shops. This was our first visit,we found it very windy on first day but told this was normal. However second night we were caught in worst storm, tent broke and blew over with my husband and belongings inside it, took me ages battling against wind to get him out thankfully safe.
Even portable loos blown over, most of tents there wrecked. Although this was extreme weather we were dismayed there was only one security man on hand to deal with all the anguish which he did very well.
No buildings were opened and there were many families in distress in middle of night all of which in my opinion is against health and safety.Apparently weather warning had been issued that afternoon but we had no notification of that (big brother on tv when we went to club to try see weather) surely we could have been given warning to batten down or leave.I understand now this happens most years at some time and am surprised there has been no tragedies
