July 2004 Went for two weeks in july/august this year. First week we had 18 adults and second week 16 adults and 8 kids.
Campsite is MASSIVE! loads of room even on a weekend although numbers of people allowed on on a saturday are limited as the island allows daytrippers on overt weekend.
We were there for the sea canoeing and hill walking. we camped in a field down the right hand rd ond on the right almost as far as you can go with the fields before you hit the harbour.
we had the sea just accross the rd and the estury n the other side of us so a choice of where to paddle.
Club house wasnt up to much... 7 peice jazz band on with only six of the epices there... dont recommend it!
The site allows fires on beach and off the ground on the site. eg bq style but a fire. Their fire warden is very strict.
Dogs allowed but under control... We had 4 dogs there overall and it was fine. Very safe for kids our kids went on the water in kayaks and swimming both in the sea and in the estury.
The tide can come over the causway which is good to see and have a paddle over to many people walking along the rd waist deep in water!
there are shops there that can kit you up for everything you need to camp even if you turned up in just the clothes off your back!
local village butchers in Llanbedr does great meat packs of local meat and not expensive.
Pothmadog not to far away for big shop. Tide can come inreally high so advice to get a tide timetable available at the site.
Only complaints are the clubhouse cafe facilities a bit naff. and the showers ven though there are a few of them you can que for anything upto an hour! not good if you have grubby kids!showers closed mid day for a few hours or cleaning every day. queues in morning, as soon as the showers open and in evening before averyone goes out!
Logs available onsite but expensive but a good place to buy cheap logs in the petrol station just as you go into porthmadog... half the price... double the amount!...
we will definately go back.
Good sea paddle over to harlech beach and round to the sand dunes on shell island. good rever trrip up the river that runs beside the estury. All tameish water... lake Bala not too far for a lake trip.

September 2004 Overall we were impressed with Shell Island. The 20yd rule is a great idea. You could camp whatever your mood dictated - by the sea, by the harbour,in the dunes and a small wood. Just one gripe realy, no pot wash facilities. On such a site of natural beauty this suprised me. The views were to die for and the sunsets were terrific. Not a bad pint of Guinness in the camp pub either. Would certainly go again.

July 2004 The scenery, beaches and wildlife on Shell Island are amazing and if this is what you look for in a camping holiday then the site is fine. However, most of the facilities need updating, the toilets, especially on the busier weeks regularly get blocked although, during most of the holiday season they have portaloos dotted about (take your own loo roll). There are not enough showers (you can end up queueing for an hour or more) and they do not have seperate drainage meaning that depending which shower you have and the bad habits of the people in the cubicles next to you, you may end up with wee on you feet (wear flip flops in the showers). The idea of the site rules is nice but in one weekend we witnessed every single one of them being broken. The 20 metre rule would be great if only anybody took any notice. If you do complain about close campers, out of hours kite flyers or late night music be prepared to be told to approach the offenders yourself.

August 2004 Just returned from a weekend at Shell Island recommended by family.
We had expected it to be very busy and it was although we didn't experience any noise problems. The children really enjoyed the sand dunes and the beaches, the area we chose was clean although a long way to a toilet. Would definatley go again. Toilets were clean, camping shop excellent, well stocked shop where you can get your mobiles charged for a small fee and the gift shop. Dissapointed with some campers driving around the site with children sat on the roofs of cars very irresponsible.
excellent site would recommend.

August 2004 Shell Island is a unique place to stay apparently people have been going back to shell island for over 30 years. THE VIEWS ARE TO DIE FOR You can camp anywhere on the island within reason, but it has to be 20 metres apart from the next tent.
you can spend all day at the beach, sand dunes go fishing on the boat
You will have to queue for the showers but thats all part of the fun. chemical toilets are inadequate at the moment but im sure they'll sort them out soon but in the mean time nothing stops you from walking to the normal ones.
AMAZING PLACE I WOULD RECOMMEND TO EVERYONE

August 2004 Have just returned from 3 nights at Shell island, and I am truly converted to camping!! This was my first ever camping trip, and I am so glad we chose this site. We camped on the top of a hill, overlooking the sea. The views were fantastic, and we saw plenty of wildlife, including a huge sea lion and a family of stoats. Facilities on site, such as club and restaurant were very good, but I much preferred watching the sun set over a campfire. The "20 yards" rule ensured privacy, and I found the site generally clean and well maintained. Its selling point is definately the stunning location and views. I found the shop ok, but my partner was concerned at the prices of bait for fishing etc, which were very overpriced. Also, if you go in high season, prepare to wait in a queue for over 40 minutes for a shower in the morning!!! There were also problems with the water supply while we were there, all the pumps were broken one afternoon. I think the facilities are probobly inadequate for a site of this size, but still, I really really enjoyed myself, we had a lovely break, and I would definately go back (as soon as possible)I don't think we could have picked better site for our first trip.

August 2004 This is the first time at this site and were bowled over by the sheer size of it. It does get busy but if you get there mon/tue there's plenty of space although on Friday it filled up and they were turning people away. Great facilities but definitely need more showers-only 7 in each (male+female). They have put more loos in now-portaloos dotted around so you dont have to walk so far now! bit disappointed with the food on offer as everything seems to be with chips! But overall a really good site with great views and yes we did see the dolpins-even got to swim with them they got so close! really good

August 2004 What a site this is, no funfair no arcades just plenty of space beautiful scenery, and one of the best beaches in Wales bliss, the lack of showers proved not to be a problem just a matter of timing, the RAF fly most days 9am to 5pm except weekends again no problem not noisy at all, two crablines £1.25 each from the camp and leisure shop provided both me and my seven year old daughter with hours of entertainment in the harbour, ten crabs between us not bad for first timers, the kids play area is good and very safe, the bar is good and cheap too £2 a pint, in short can't wait to go back.

Every year from Summer 1995 !! Shell Island is our favourite campsite. You don't need to book - avoid bank holidays you can get turned away !!300 acre site has 3 beaches to choose from, endless things for kids to do, shell collecting, crabbing, eel catching, kite flying (time restrictions due to low flying jets during certain times) beautiful harbour and views, loads of space for ball games, well behaved dogs allowed. Dont't camp near to the facilities if you want peace and quite though supermarket, cafe, bar, gift shop etc. Can't say enough about the place except its getting too popular !!

June 2004 Very spacious site with good sea views, facilities not quite adequate for a site of this size, but brilliant sand dunes and wild life (Has anyone else seen the dolphin?).
Watch out for the RAF though- they were doing low flying exercises on the Monday morning when we were there. Good shops and cheap cafe, but a bit far from any towns.
I would definitely go again.
