This was our third visit to this spacious and welcoming site. As usual the reception and gatehouse staff were friendly and helpful. After previous experience we pitched on one of the dog free fields reasonably close to the amenities. This was handy with our 4 year old daughter as we could take her to the play area or go crabbing within a few mins. The previous visits we were far away from the amenities but being so close this time we enjoyed the children's evening entertainment in the canteen which kept our daughter occupied until its end at 10pm. Pizza supply was very handy for snacking, and the shop handy for things you may have forgotten to bring. We didn't queue for showers, at anytime, they were reasonably clean. The toilets in the canteen area could have been a bit cleaner, blame the campers, not the staff I say. We didn't experience any trouble whilst there, never have done, the security staff seem to be present doing their thing, which was good. Our only complaint was with that of dogs, or rather their owners. Owners who use the dog free field as a short cut for their animals, then let them pee and poo without shame. Also we saw many dogs running about wild, on the beach, everywhere in fact, usually bothering those who don't like them. One guy pitched up next to us with his 4 legged friend and tried to hide him, only bringing him out in the dark, to foul. It beggars belief. Other than all of that, we enjoyed our stay and will be back, this weekend in fact.

We have just come back from an 8 day stop on Shell Island from the week before half term up to the Sunday of the bank holiday weekend so we saw the 2 extremes of the island from deserted to manic.

It is, without doubt, one of the more beautiful campsites where you can pitch pretty much where you like as long as you are 20m away from others. Our first weekend was fairly quiet, with just a couple of small groups on the other side of our field. During the week we had the field to ourselves. Over the bank holiday our field was pretty packed, mostly with groups. It seems not many people know how far 20m is. It was delightful during the week & whilst it wasn't horrendous over the weekend, it wasn't my idea of a peaceful campsite. Why do campers have to leave their car running & music blaring out? The music did get turned down around 11. 30 but it wasn't quiet until after midnight. On the plus side it was quiet in the early mornings.

Reception were helpful on arrival. They have tourist information leaflets & weather reports. There are several shops: well stocked supermarket, gift shop (with fantastic range of ice creams) & camping supplies. There is also a bar/restaurant & a laundrette but we didn't use them.

There are now several small toilet blocks dotted around the island. We saw them in all states - great during the week. Pity that not all campers leave them in a decent state for the next person, but they were regularly cleaned. The showers are woefully inadequate with barely a dribble of water down the wall even when no other showers were in use.

Security were a visible presence on the site & we witnessed the police being called out. It was a pity that they obviously don't enforce their policies - no groups (we felt like the only ones not in a group), dogs to be kept on leads (we did see 1 dog on a lead), quiet after 11th (not a chance).

Having said all that, it is a beautiful island with plenty to see & do. The beach is wonderful, great for swimming, good for building sandcastles, rock pooling, shells galore, plenty of space for playing games & flying kites. The causeway is great for crabbing.

Further afield we visited a few attractions: we caught the Ffestiniog railway from Porthmadog to Blaenau Ffestiniog. The village has much improved from our last visit 9 years ago. The slate works tour is worth doing & there are now other attractions on the site including bouncy nets in a cave (exhausting & expensive but fun), zip wires & a new 'go ape' type adventure but in the caves. We also visited the Centre for Alternative Energy & did plenty of walking - Nantcol Waterfalls, Roman Steps & Snowdon.

We will return, but not during peak times.

Having read all the reviews both positive and negative I thought I would add my comments.

All the nice things about location etc. Are perfectly true and some (not all) of the negative ones unfortunately are also true However Without paying a fortune for a 'posh' site you will always get a very small minority who will misbehave no matter which campsite you are on and I've been on a few! Its a fact of life that a small number of people get drunk and misbehave no matter where you are.

However I can confirm that every time I have been I HAVE seen security patrolling at night. I HAVE seen them enforcing rules. I HAVE seen them cleaning the toilet blocks (that's why they have to close them, at the same time everyday) I have even seen the worst offenders ejected from the site!

So all in all when you take into account the sheer size of the place and the extreme diversity of campers there is bound to be a small number who don't obey the rules.

But overall Its the BEST campsite I have ever been to and I go 3 or 4 times every year. And to the person that complained that the WiFi only worked round the main buildings how on earth do you think they could get a WiFi signal to reach over a site that is almost 4 miles long!

Had a fantastic time here with my two young grandsons. Picked a site at the far end near the sand dunes, in a small cove of trees. Considering the lower end of the campsite was fairly busy, where we were at the far end was quiet and private. The beach is brilliant for the kids(and clean)with lots of sand for sandcastles, and an area of the beach with rockpools. Also great was exploring the sand dunes and having adventures getting lost in them. The 5 minute drive back up to the main facilities was no problem, and the facilities were brilliant. Nothing over the top, just a couple of little shops one selling a good supply of groceries at very good prices, and the other selling various camping equipment, buckets and spades, etc, and souvenirs, and will charge your phone for £1. There is a well kept, large play area for the kids outside the cafe (also reasonably priced), so you could just sit in the seating area with a brew, chill out, and watch the kids have a play on the swings and climbing frame. They also have a security service that patrol the campsite, making sure everyone is ok, behaving and happy. A great site, no complaints at all. Loved it !

August 13-18 2014. Tail end of Hurricane Bertha.

This was our 1st stay at Shell Island and we loved it. Definitely coming back next year.

We came as a group of 5 families with 2 dogs and we did adhere to the rules. We where to the left of the island towards the long beach and sand dunes. The place was busy but still plenty of room to stay away from most other campers. It was clean, with little rubbish floating around, even with the wind.

Shops, bar and restaurant were all reasonably priced and provided most things. There's an arcade for kids of all ages. The bar for us bigger kids and a play area out front.

The kids really enjoyed themselves when we went crabbing at high tide on the causeway. They made lots of friends with children from other camps, even resulting in pen pals.

The toilet and shower facilities where basic to good. You had to queue sometimes for both and and it is always a bit hit and miss to what state it will be left in from the previous occupants. Not all people are respectful and considerate. The staff do clean them regularly but the sheer volume of people using them means its potentially going to be a mess. You don't camp for these privileges though and if you are really bothered by these things, it might be best bringing your own provisions or go 'Glamping' instead.

Overall, we loved it. Great company. Beautiful scenery. Lovely friendly atmosphere. Most definitely coming again.

Just spend my first week ever at shell island was unsure about going after reading many bad reviews but had a amazing time there would definitely go back again but for people going there for the first time I would advise take your own toilet the porta toilets near all the fields are disgusting, the showers were fine clean and hot but go early to avoid waiting the location was fab, lovely clean beach kids will love it, they have a snack bar, play area, shop, bar and launderette which are very handy if the weather is nice you don't really have to leave the island, overall good site fab if you have kids but don't go if you expecting 5 star facilities or a peaceful holiday

I visited this large site with my husband and 3 children over the summer holidays for 3 nights. The scenery around the site is lovely and the beach also. We had a great afternoon rock pooling and saw others crabbing successfully. We also had campfires and felt blessed that we had a large pitch or we would certainly have packed up and gone home.

The campsite itself was not good. The toilets were disgusting. When I say disgusting I mean 'excrement on the floor' disgusting. The showers were not much better. I've never left a shower feeling like I need another one to get clean!

There were several posters around the campsite stating 'strictly no noise' after a certain time. Also 'no single gender' groups. Campsite website states: Shell Island is a Families and Couples Campsite. We do not accept Single Sex Groups/Groups, or Youngsters camping by themselves without parental supervision.

None of these were enforced by the campsite and I never saw any wardens at all.

So what we were left with was a noisy site (continual thud of dance music) with loud groups of people, many drinking and smoking substances. We saw a good few people walking around drunk. One 'delightful' pair of lads decided they would swear at my seven year old daughter. I went to the reception to complain and this was not followed up.

Such a shame in what could have been a beautiful campsite.

We will not be back again and, unless you would enjoy being part of a Jeremy Kyle programme, can I suggest you stay well clear.

We went to Shell Island on the recommendation of a friend - I can only assume that they have never been during school holidays or we went to a different Shell Island as it is not what we were expecting. We arrived at the site and were told to have a drive and find a spot (staff not helpful). It took over an hour and a half to find anywhere suitable and in the end we were on a side bit next to one of the roads as the field were jam packed and the spaces we could find (at least 20 meters away from another tent) were either too steep that we'd roll down our tents, next to a large group that looked less than welcoming or in what appeared to be marshland surrounded by flies. The site do not enforce their own rules - no noise after 11pm is totally ignored - even the no camping field was full of tents! The portaloos were generally OK, but this is a campsite, not a festival. Didn't use the showers because there was always a huge queue and they were not clean. The 'no day trippers' rule is another that is ignored and not enforced. Large groups of noisy people. People driving round fast, hanging out their cars singing at all hours. Couldn't complain as unable to drive after a few glasses of wine, had no reception and, to be honest, it didn't feel safe enough to walk. No single sex group bookings rule might as well not be there as people obviously just booked separately and camped together. Rubbish left everywhere, dogs running around off leads as well. The little shops are well stocked and the prices aren't too bad and the beaches are lovely. The whole place needs some money putting into it, some TLC and some enforcement of its own rules. The only reason I'm giving 4 stars is because the beaches are nice - I'd suggest camping elsewhere and visiting for a day.

Well what can I say, just had a few amazing days at shell island, we choose to go during term time when it is not so busy, toilets were spotless as was the showers, site is massive, so you pitch where you like, one part of the beach is full of shells, the other is just miles of golden sand, if your fit you can walk along the beach into barmouth (we didn't) on site shop sells everything, then there is a gift shop and camping shop, you can have camp fires as long as they are off the ground, during term time it's my bit of heaven there is also a pub and games room and laundrette

We visited this site for a long weekend without the kids as a nice get away.

The site is massive and unlike most sites restricting to where you pitch the rules stated not within 20m of another tent, that gives you some idea of the size of the site.

Because of the freedom of pitch you could pitch your tent from coast tops, sand dunes to shady wooded copes. We pitched with the mountains to wake up to one one side and the sand dunes one the other with the light wind blowing in the trees behind us. For view and location this site takes some beating.

However the negatives, they are several!

There is only one main shower / toilet block which needed updating and more importantly closed at odd times. This left portaloos dotted around the site, it was quiet when we visited but we can imagine it's not pleasant when busy as not everyone treats things with respect.

We booked on line and had to pay a booking charge which we didn't like nor the fact we paid for WiFi and this one worked around the main area so another waste of money.

We didn't feel it was good value for money for site facilities but for a location and to rough it for a few days the location and long sandy beaches (Sunshine required ideally) make this a site worth returning to
