For me the great thing about this site is the fact that it is slap bang on top of a wonderful clean beach. The site is enormous and is really good for groups, in that you can tuck yourself into an area and make it your own.
We went when it was full and I have to say it was very well managed. The staff were very much on top of anybody who strayed away from the rules about noise which makes it more relaxed for all.
The site is also carefully looked after and is full of wild flowers etc.
There is a bar which was reasonably priced and shops that have most things that you need (there is a butcher in the village on the mainland who does great meat as well). There is also a snack bar, which had an adequate menu. Access is via a causeway which is blocked around high tide, which can be a bit frustrating in that you have to plan when you leave and arrive.
When it's full there are not really enough showers and toilets, so expect queues to use the showers especially.

Just got back from an amazing weekend of pure sunshine on shell island. This was our first time there, only took the 2 man tent in case we could not find a b&b, so glad they were full, we drove down to shell island not knowing if we could get a pitch. The staff at reception were so nice, we were told to pitch anywhere we like. Its a great place, pub, shop, gift shop and a camping shop, in fact its got everything you need. The site is so big we never got to see the beach, or the dunes, although we did get to see a brill sunset on the crabbing beach. We will certainly be going back, next time we will take the big tent and get a sea view. The toilets and shower block were clean and free. Its a haven if you have children. I was gobsmacked it cost £14. 50 for 2 adults pn. I was expecting it to be more. Cant wait to return.

Wow what amazing views, we visited mid week and it was quiet which was great for us as we are a couple in our 50's. The sit is very well maintained and the staff very welcoming and helpful. It has everything you need, shop, mini store, bar, cafe. The lovely lady in the cafe was very kind as we turned up 5 min before closing and she was more than happy to serve us, we where very grateful. The beach is amazing the loos although not 5 star where clean and well looked after. We would definitely go again

We started going to Shell Island in the 1980s and it's truly beautiful. We got a thrill from watching the sunsets, the dolphins leaping in the bay and finding the tiniest shells while our children loved the freedom and making new friends with like-minded folk.
Go there for the beach & rockpools and you'll be in heaven! We never really used the bar or the adjoining playground as it seemed daft when there were so much nicer places to be on the island!
We're well used to roughing it and in some ways find it regrettable that the facilities were updated as Shell island is now a victim of it's own success.
While the scenery remains magical, the facilities can't cope when the Island gets busy, particularly when some visitors have no consideration or indeed shame! The toilets can become appalling as some visitors abuse them in revolting ways. The staff make a real effort, but are quite overwhelmed and find it difficult to deal with frequent breaking of all the rules that have made Shell island special. We actually saw EVERY rule broken in the few days we were there and saw shop staff abused by young children when they attempted to stop them recklessly riding scooters around the path endangering others.
Sadly the biggest irony is that people go to Shell Island for the beauty and tranquillity, then a significant (by the impact they have, ) minority set about trashing it by a lack of common courtesy and the assumption that the rules don't apply to them!

I have been camping on Shell Island since 2006. It's one of the best sites in North Wales, Location, views, beaches and facilities. It has it all.
You can pitch where you want to.
Out of peak season it's brilliant.
However if you go at week ends, or during busy times beware!
The fantastic rules of pitches being 20 metres apart and no music /noise after 11pm are disregarded!
The staff simply can't cope, and are overwhelmed.
The rules are not adhered to.
At week ends loud noisy people/ teenagers arrive, get drunk, and use foul language. Which is disruptive and worrying. Last week end a security guard was threatened with a baseball bat, and the offenders had to be escorted off the island.
Despite concerned campers reporting this behaviour little seems to change.
Inconsideration is rife in some areas, tents ect being pitched within a few metres of others.
Toilets and showers become littered with paper and dirt.
The reception staff should remind all when booking in about the rules on noise, and the 20 metre rule in busy periods. Security should drive round the island more frequently at night to ensure peace, quiet and safety for all.

Just returned from a fantastic few days at Shell. We have been going for many years and several times a year and love the open space and chilled atmosphere. Yeah bank holidays it is crowded but the state of the toilets is down to the campers as the toilets get cleaned on a regular basis. The staff have always been friendly and very helpful. Any problems have been dealt with. The ladies shower block has had new mirrors, sockets and work surface in the area for hairdriers etc and looked super. It is wonderful to see children playing ball games, flying kites, crabbing in the fresh air and not relying on electronic games for entertainment! So a big well done to all the staff for making Shell Island a lovely place to camp. The sunsets are fantastic! We are looking forward to a return visit very soon!

Spent Whitsun week at Shell Island. As we arrived past the army barracks and over the tidal causeway you can't help but think (oh no where have we booked). But that is where it ends, we had a lovely time despite the wet and windy weather.
Pros
You are not confined to pitch spaces and can pitch wherever you like. We pitched in a wind trap but that was due to it being our first time at shell island. The dune area looked better.
Its cheap and cheerful, we didn't frequent the café or bar while we there but the prices were very reasonable. Little updating required.
The playground serves its purpose and is well maintained.
The beaches and scenery were beautiful, it is a lovely place to visit. Amazing Sunsets/views.
Cons
The toilets and showers could do with a bit of updating but to be fair we have seen worse.
There are not enough toilets or showers, but that isn't going to change due to the vastness of the site.
No electric hook up anywhere, but we managed just.
We enjoyed our weeks break and shall definitely return with our two children when the weather's better. The kids loved it.

Great location & cheap too. But. After a busy weekend there was a lot of litter left by people leaving which was not cleared up in the following few days & was left to blow around. There was also a lot of litter in & around the otherwise beautiful sand dunes. Worst of all for me there was no recycling of anything! On such a huge campsite I found this unbelievable and totally unacceptable. Imagine how many bottles & cans alone are going to landfill every week from this enormous site. On asking I was told they used to but it got too expensive - how do they get away with that?

Shell island is one of my favourite sites. We go every year at easter in a group of friends. For me the beauty of this site is its size and freedom. At that time of year it is possible to get right out of the way and isolate yourselves from other campers. They also allow firepits and for me camping isnt camping without a camp fire.
The facilities are basic and they could do with more showers although waiting times are short. I imagine the site is packed out in summer and I know it would be a very different experience. The pub on site is small and cosy with ok beer although the evening meals in the cafe are pretty dismal. Cook for yourself. The beach is clean and good for a 30 min walk and there's a decent icecream shop. But for me, and I know other reviewers disagree with me, the real boon of shell is you are treated like an adult on arrival and not hammered with campsite rules, quized on your marital status and plans for the weekend and generally made to feel like a naughty child as is so often the case at smaller sites.
