We spent 4 great days at shell island just before the bank holiday in August, and we had a great time, it was really windy and it persisted down each night but we were well anchored down and cosy, take your waterproofs just in case, we walked the dogs legs off almost, the kids went crabbing, and the 2 mile walk to the village is worth it, There is a nice little butchers and a pub that does meals if you want to take a walk there.
We arrived on a night that entertainment was put on in the bar area, we didnt go but the disco could be heard all over, if you want butlins camping style, then you can have it, if not then just do your own thing as we did.
The only temporary down side is your neighbours, we had 2 mini buses pull up beside us and literally take over, out came 5 tents, a gazebo, tables chairs 8 kids, 3 teenagers, adults and put every ones neck out as their is supposed to be a 20 mtr distance left between each tent, I know someone reported it but they were asked to point this out to the group- yeah right!  anyway by the morning two or three people had packed up and moved because of the crampedness and the posse spread out and gave everyone back some room,

My brother and some mates went last weekend and camped in the dunes and had a good time, the kids took their bikes and played on the beach.

Shell Island is a TENT ONLY site (including trailer tents) with NO electric hook up. So is for the "REAL" camper.
They do allow motor homes onto the site but you must have a tent pitched to sleep in.

We went to Shell Island for the first time in 13 years this summer. Previously my husband had been there every year since being 4.

The "Island" is beautiful.
It has a lovely beach and stunning views and is famous for . Yep you have guessed it. Its shells.

The facilities are small, but clean (provided you go early enough). There are porta-loos dotted around the site. There is a 24 unit shower block 12 male 12 female and an additional shower porta-cabin with 6 more showers. The showers are lovely and warm too, especially when you camp on the wettest weekend of the season are soaking wet from a walk on the beach and hypothermia is beginning to set in. They toilet block is clean but the porta-loos are less than sparkling at various times of the day.
Admittedly we were there in peak season and the site was almost full, so they were heavily used.

There is a pub, restaurant, arcade, grocery shop, camp shop and "tack" shop for souvenirs in the centre of the site and is reasonably priced. In fact tent pegs were cheaper there than at our main camping shop.

The site itself is made up of grassed areas, secluded woodland and sand dunes.
You pay per person so you can camp large tents comfortably and as space is not an issue you are asked to camp no closer than 20 metres from the next nearest tents giving you privacy if you need it.
We went with our 3 children my sister and her son and camped 2 large frame tents a ridge tent and a toilet tent, taking up a fair amount of space, at the super value price of £28.50 per night.

We had a lovely holiday even with the wet weather and the staff on the site were extremely friendly and very helpful.

We highly recommend Shell Island and will be going back next year.

I give shell island 4 out of 5. 5 out of 5 when they build more shower / toilet facilities.

It was our first visit to Shell Island, two adults, two kids and a dog. The site is well managed, with a secure entry. After checking in you can either go up and camp to the left which takes you to the sand dunes and massive sandy beach, or right towards the small harbour, there is still a nice bay along there and lots of lovely shells. If you don't take your own loo, or camp right next to the main block, you have to use the porta loos which are dotted all over the site, these are cleaned regularly, but people tend to leave them in a mess which is a shame and spoils it for others.
The showers are good and hot. There are some useful shops on site, camping shop with essentials, nice gift shop with great chocolate and ice creams, and grocery store. It was fun to go crabbing, and swimming in the clean sea. We enjoyed our stay of four nights, it was full to capacity but we had no noise problems at all! Would definitely go again.

Just got back, left early due to bad weather on its way.

Very big site, followed advice from others by going left, found great spot after around 30 minutes of ummming and arrrring. Only 2 fields away from the main toilets, showers and facilities. Very, very windy first few days, with a tent pole snapping under the strain as we set up.

Such a wonderful site when the weather is in your favour, the beach is on the doorstep, so cheap days out for us and the kids, we managed 2 days on beach with the second being the best, kids and me spent all the afternoon flying kites and playing in the sea.

The have a list near reception with thigns that a kid NEEDS to do, great little thing to follow. Crabing seemed popular on the harbour and on the salt marshes.

Some downsides of the site:
The causeway is not always accessible, due to high tides so it was annoying that you had to plan your departure and and arrivals when you left the site. So make sure you plan in advance.

Some of the other site customers were slightly undesrible, with many youngster hanging about, doing the usual kids hanging about thing and getting into mischief.

The shops have everything you need to survive shell island. The camping shop is very well priced with everything from new BBQ grills to bags of kindling and logs for your own camp fires.

Things you need to do:

Go crabbing in the harbour

Beach Fire and BBQ

Try pranwing (we didnt get nowt)

Look for the glow worms (we found them, ask staff for details)

Kire flying on beach

Stroll on the sand dunes

The Village Inn does reasonable food and has large screen (watched England vs Greece), cheap beer too.Things to look out for:

Large groups of fellow campers (even the olders ones got roudy after a few beers in the evening)

Sites too near the toilets as it get smelly. (go far left, if lucky a sheltered sand dune)

Tide times for escape

Times for showers, either try when they open, or as we found about teatime when people are eating, if not try late night 10pm onwards.

Other place of Interest:

Llanfair slate mines, only £4-5 for self guided tour, great for kids.

Portmadog town centre for the wonderful Cadwalders ice cream, harbour and internet access.

Pwllheli is about 1 hours drive but worth the drive as it has many things to do, like karting, archery, quads.

Carnaferon has a 'Fun Centre' but only worth a trip if wet as after an hour the kids will get bored, but the laser game is worth the journey on its own. KFC, Subway here as well as a cheap shop at Netto's.

Barmouth is nice but with kids you could spend a fortune with the arcades, sweets rides.

Shell Island itself has lots to do and could take 2-3 days to fully explore the entire site, beach, dunes and harbours.

Sorry for long review, hope it is useful for others. Overall a great site for the family, would love to go back and hope to have great weather.

Shell Island, an Island you get to by a tidal causeway so check the tide times before venturing on or off site. This site is massive, you don't book, just turn up and choose where to site your tent. If you go left  after booking in you are nearer to the sand dunes and a massive never ending sandy beach. If you go right, you are still a stones throw from the beach but it's a more course sand, full of shells, and many rock pools which are great for crabbing and shrimping. There's also a great crabbing site on the causeway road just before the site, you can buy a crab line with sinker at the gift shop on site, or take your own.
The sea is very clean, and there are many different types of shells to be found. The site has a main toilet and shower block next to reception, and portaloos situated all around the site, but these are cramped and most always have splashes of wee and what -have -you on them, it would be best to take your own portaloo and loo tent really. I found baby wipes to be indispensable too.
There's a good camping shop on site, which stocks the basics, wood, wind breaks, even jumpers! Also a well stocked mini market and gift shop which sells lovely ice-cream and chocolates.I didn't find the cafe very good value, junk food and quite expensive. We found the site to be very well run,  it was full to capacity, but there was no noise or rowdy people at all.
It has a permanently manned entrance and wardens in case of any trouble. Harlech Castle is a good place to visit nearby if you like that sort of thing.

Second visit to Shell Island - came with friends who love the place.  Toilets are disgusting - thank god for taking your own portaloo and the showers are overcrowded, dirty and not open for long enough.  The portable showers which have been installed are dirty and not many people use them because of this, preferring to queue up for the static ones.  The only good thing about Shell Island is the fact that you cannot camp close to anyone without prior agreement.  Love the freedom of the site and where it is set, but definitely think that a bit of money spent on more shower and toilet blocks would not go amiss.

We've just returned from Shell Island, and to be honest we are really disappointed. The site was almost full to capacity - the couple who pitched next to us said that in all the years they had been going to Shell Island they've never seen it as full as it was this morning - but for some reason there was only 1 shower available each for men & women. In the middle of a heatwave, at the busiest time of the year, the alternative showers (a portacabin next to the shower block) was closed! The queues were huge even at 7am.and even longer by 10am, so much so that we gave up and came home. Don't think we'll be visiting Shell Island again unless we are fully self-sufficient :-(

ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT! We were a bit reluctant to try camping here as we had heard lots of bad comments, i.e. Not enough facilities and noisy groups of teenagers. We arrived to just try one night but fell in love with it and stayed longer!
We didn't hear or see any loud groups of people and the field we camped in was full of like-minded families. Porta-loos dotted around seemed to be cleaned regular and the wardens were patrolling regularly to offer help if needed. The kids had a great time crabbing (got absolutely filthy and needed clean clothes six times each day!), beaches were lovely and clean. The sunsets are AMAZING! Will definitely be going back lots this summer!

We arrived on the 27th of may on a rainy Saturday morning, the tide was in and causeway was flooded. I thought we might not get on because we came the same time last year and ended up down the road on a farmers field. How wrong was I the staff were great and said they were only going to let the people cueing up on the causeway. We booked the week and to be fair I think its great value.

We pitched the tent in the first field to your left heading towards the harbor. It was great not overfilled just right. We had a great week and Wednesday on it was nothing but sunshine, we both got sunburnt it was that hot. The site never changes, I know the porta loo`s and minging but hey they were cleaned nearly everyday.
What surprised us this year was the entertainment. It was great and everybody was enjoying it.

Overall great holiday and we will be back in august for a few days with family and friends.

PS got to mention the pub down the end of the road,  on the old aircraft museum. They were well nice people and we will going there again. Plus there beer was cheaper and got a massive screen to watch the England matches on.

This is one of the best camp sites I a have been on. It is a little untidy but it is really good for children and large groups of people. I have never had any problems. It is close to the beach which is really good because you do not have to use the car. Also there is a pub and shops on site. Also a shopping centre close buy.
