Well what can I say?? I am absolutely gutted! What an awful night we spent here. We have been going off and on here for a few years and now grandson turning one thought time to introduce him into camping life. What a reality check! Rules are, no camping close together, not adhered, no groups of same sex, not adhered, no noise after 11pm! Definately not adhered. In the day time people were still playing loud music which was really annoying so we moved site. Dont get me wrong I am not against people enjoying them selves but have some respect for others. You have a dogs not allowed area, what about a no kids or young people areas. Good points though the staff are great. The bar staff lovely and shop staff. And the area is absolutely beautiful. The beaches are gorgeous and there are a few walks. Barmouth town, were we ended up moving to another site there, is ten mins in the car. So if you wanna party down all night this is your place but if you want peace and quiet go at your own peril! My ratings are all ten out of ten cause the site area ect is marvellous just the people that camp there.

Spent 17 days at this site and didn't want to come home. We have been here a few times over the years but this is the first time with children and trailer tent. We were there initially for a busy weekend where some nightmare people shouted at their plethora of kids and walked through our camp spitting so it was nice when they went. Then we were completely spoilt as we had a week with about five other campers on the whole of the site due to strong winds but we loved the solitude. So when the sun came out and people started to turn up again we were a bit scowly but soon slapped ourselves round again. I LOVE this site. Despite the fact that every time I went walking I took a bag with me for all the broken glass I found in the sand-dunes; despite the fact that the showers are rubbish and the portaloos broken; despite the fact that some people take no notice whatsover of the 20 metre rule and there are single sex parties everywhere. Despite the fact that there are boy-racers zooming about when it's busy. But the location is stunning and I lose myself in it every time I go and find new little bits to it. The beach can never be crowded cos there's so much of it.
The owners need to get on top of the rubbish and glass situation and reduce the 20 mph speed limit to 5mph and I would have no complaints. See you next year Shell Island

We have been here a number of times and thoroughly enjoy our stays. The dog has been very happy too. The shops are well stocked with almost every desirable commodity you could think of.
I am not a fan of the cafe and pub. They are rather shabby and out dated needing a revamp. As for the shower block, don't try to get in early as there could be a long wait (longer than an hour), so choose to go later. I have never had a cold shower but it has been known. The toilets are in abundance but sometimes can be in a right state, probably due to messy and unhygienic patrons.
As for the portaloos around the site. Avoid if at all possible, they are DISGUSTING. A suggestion to the owners is to install another shower/toilet block down at the dunes end.
We have been over one easter weekend, and the reccomendation is. Don't go!We had single sex parties just across from us, who partied ALL weekend, with no input from the wardens to stop. Boy racers almost flattening myself and dog down a track, vomit, litter, drunken behaviour, you name it we had it.
But and yet we are going back at a quieter time where we hope to enjoy the stunning scenery and solitude for a good unwind from the working week.

Returned today from 6 days at shell Island.
Good points -
Stunning location
Supermarket, well stocked and eclectic choice, nice welsh sausages!
Camping shop - came into its own when coleman cooker died
Bar
Lovely walks around site - we spent first two days just doing that!
Campers are not supposed to camp within 20 metres of other tents
Not so good points -
Food available in snack bar - yuk! and no other ways to dine! (apart from do it yourself!)
People ignored the 20 metre rule - we returned on two days to find people had camped too close!
Children playing football and kicking their balls against my tent/ car/ roofbox!
We walked into the nearest town for some decent food - Victoria pub is very good and very busy with Shell Island diners!
There is a train station but it's a bit far to walk to on a hot day!
They have a no dogs field - they should also have a no children field!
Overall an excellent site and we will be back!

This is a massive site in a fantastic location next to a lovely beach, huge sand dunes & small harbour. There are loads of places to pitch up here & lots of tucked away spots that take a good drive round to find.
We stayed for an extended bank holiday break from 26th until 31st May, two adults & two kids & another group of friends with the same & pitched up near the sand dunes for the kids. My advice would be to check the weather before you go & avoid any strong winds that are forecast if possible.
We booked online & had strong winds that caused loads of damage around the site. There isn't much shelter anywhere on the site from the winds & due to the ground being quite sandy, unless you had long pegs then guy-ropes were being uprooted everywhere, plus everything got covered in sand & salt.
The facilities on the site were basic but adequate, just. Being a bank holiday it was very busy & there was a small queue to the mainly cold showers.
Portaloos had seen better days but were emptied daily. Main toilet block was okay, clean. The shops in the main square are well stocked & priced little more than other corner shops back home. Bar was quite nice. Snack bar/restaurant not tried so can't comment.
All in all a more relaxed, rustic camping experience where you can light up a fire & get merry with friends in a beautiful location. What will change your stay from an okay time to a great time will probably be the weather.
I can see why some people have slated this place but to be honest if you are looking for somewhere with all the mod cons, peace & quiet & cleanliness then don't go to this site, especially on a bank holiday weekend. Come with an open mind, don't expect too much & enjoy it for what it is & you're likely to like the place.

I have been to shell island on numerous occasions, and had a great time. However, the queuing for the showers is horrific, and the port-a-loos are disgusting. There should be another toilet and shower block built on the dune side of the site, especially for bank holiday weekends when the site is so full. Noisy youngsters also disturb the peace seeking people. Generally the weather is kind as the clouds tend to skip over the site and argue with the hills behind, so it can be raining on the hills but bone dry on site. However it is so lovely when the louts have gone home and the serious campers are left to enjoy the countryside in peace. The shops provide a great selection of goods and the local butcher has delicious meat and meat products. The pub is OK but can be packed full at times leaving you struggling to find a seat.

Shell Island was our first trip away as a family and Shell island was just the ticket. We had 4 nights on the park, Easter bank holiday weekend. Having a large tent, there were no restrictions on the footprint and wheter you set breakers up or you gazebo. There is a spot for everyone, whether it be quiet or communial.
Gladly we arrived on the Thursday morning to an empty park and pleased we did as Friday by mid day the park was full and the 20mtr ruling had gone out the window!
However the park was alive and buzzing, and just as long as you don't mind someone playing drum and bass till midnight and then being woken by ACDC at 0700 in the morning, you'll get on fine. Everyone is friendly and the beach give hours of entertainment and lovely walks down endless banks of sand. A bit of dune jumping was excellent but no one ever mentions how knackered you are once you have reached the top!
The facilities were clean and queue's were constant, and found that a 19:45 shower every day was a perfect time in busy season. However chosing not to use the portaloos provided, and having camped by the dunes, the toilet and shower block was a 3-4 minute DRIVE away as the site is huge! We will go back most definitely as the kids enjoyed building the camp fire each night. As another reviewer said, it is good old fashion camping and caters for everyone for a short break away. Try it, even for a couple of nights.

This site is HUGE, and the scenery is stunning, but give yourself time to find the right spot, there are some very lovely secluded spots to be found. Be warned - its a windy spot!
The toilet block can seem a long way away, but there are plenty of portaloos which seemed to get emptied daily.
We went on the busy royal wedding weekend, as did half of Manchester I think. This site would be great at less peak times, so if you can go mid week, I would.
This site would improve greatly if they built a couple more shower blocks. One for the biggest site in Europe is not enough. The best time for the showers is about 6.30 - 7.30pm, everyone seems busy with their BBQs and hardly any queues! Don't go at 8am, the queue is round the block!
Take toilet roll with you, not always any there.
Don't leave valuables in your tent.
Shop is over priced, but useful. They charge for carrier bags.
Check the tide times - you can get cut off!

This was just as we had expected! great site, you could come here several times, stay in different locations on the island and have several different experiences. The facilities are great! although if you are in a tent without your own loo and shower you may (as we did) elect to stay more centrally for ease of access. We pitched our tent in a superb position which gave us 180 degree views of the coastline, the dunes and the park.
Slight 1970's holiday centre feel about the place but that added to charm. It was getting very busy as we left (just before the Easter bank hol) so we wouldn't like to go in main hols, but we cannot fault Shell Island on any level and will go back.!

This was our first visit to Shell Island as it was highly recommended by friends and family.
We took our folding camper here over the Easter weekend and set off from our home town in Wigan at 6:45am on the Friday to get there around 10ish as the causeway was going to be shut around about 10:50 until 1 'o'clock ish by the sea.
When we got there at just before 10am we were told to park onto the overflow car park just to book in at reception, then we had to queue up for just under an hour (which the queue was from the reception, right across the car park to the driveway) just to book in.
Once paid and through the security barriers we headed towards the sand dunes to find a nice little quite area, however on the bank holiday weekends, nice little quite area's are hard to come by and the 20 meter rule between you and your neighbours (which is there No 1 rule) is out of the window. All the fields were rammed full so we continued to follow the road along until we reached a turn towards the back end of the site near to a big flat sand dune, where to our surprise was an empty area at the top of a hill overlooking this big flat sand dune. Our pitch for the weekend had been found.
We did have a bit of a noisy group who pitched well within 10 meters of us, a couple of hours after we had pitched up, for the first night, but the next day they moved else where on the site, thank god.
After the first night had passed and being some what annoyed about queuing and the noisy group which had now gone, I started to really like the site. There was plenty to do without moving off the site. The family and I had spent time on the beautiful beach, flying kites, paddling in the sea, saving starfish (that's another story) and crabbing at the harbour.
There were a lot of temporary porta loo's dotted about which I've been told where only there due to it being the bank holidays. The main toilet block was clean every time I was there which surprised me and the shops were always stocked well. There was also a children's play area, which was probably a little too grown up for our 2 year old daughter, however she did like playing on it, just with a little supervision from me and the Mrs.
Another little thing which I noticed that is probably is not a problem at any other time than a bank holiday weekend was the water pressure at the fresh water taps. From where we where at the far end of the site the water more like trickled out of the tap than gushed out. It wasn't too much of a problem for myself as I attached my hose to the tap and had the barrel on the floor and just left it to fill up slowly but you do have a little queue for water now and again.
Even though there is no electric hook ups on this site, sometimes its just worth it to go onto battery and slightly ruff it (so I say, I still had the satellite box hooked up to an inverter on battery) and just enjoy it with what you have.
Overall summary of the site. A beautiful location with a stunning beach. OK toilets and great value for money. Will definitely be going here again, but NOT during a bank holiday weekend.
