When we got to shell island I was unsure what to expect, I had heard some very good things but also had a read a lot of the negative comments on this website. We were lucky and arrived in glorious sunshine and went about finding somewhere to pitch. - we were meeting friends who were arriving later so needed somewhere roomy and chose one of the large fields. If we had been on our own we would have loved to set up in one of the many little hidden spots dotted all over the place. It was only when the tent was up and we headed over the sand dunes to the beach when I realised how beautiful this site is. Long sandy beaches and blue sea to one side and the majestic snowdonian peaks to the other. The perfect place to catch sunset and sunrise. To be fair we were lucky with the weather I can imagine it to be rather different if the rain is pouring down. We didn't use any of the facilities so cant comment on them.
I would like to address some of the other comments
Portaloos - were clean and handily positioned (they cant be cleaned all the time so if they are a mess it is down to the people that use them)
General litter - there was some litter when we started to put the tent up but within an hour a warden turned up and cleaned the field (again it is the responsibility of people to clean up after themselves the site is too big to be constantly patrolled by litter pickers)
20 metre rule - If someone starts to set up and you feel its too close, politely say something. The wardens cant do anything if they are not aware.
20 MPH speed limit - simple, don't let your children play on the roads, there is so much open space.
I would highly recommend this site as would my wife and 3 year old daughter, we will be going back as soon as we can hopefully year after year.

After spending a weekend at Shell Island with a small group of friends, I have been left with very mixed feelings about the site. Our group consisted of two couples and three guys in their late twenties, plus one rather vacant dog, with four tents between us.
The last of the group to arrive were myself, my wife and the aforementioned mutt. Sadly, upon our arrival the heavens opened, and we were left with no option but to pitch in a downpour. (I say 'we' but actually mean 'I' - OH kept the dog out of the way). Naturally we can't hold the site accountable for the weather - it is on the coast after all - but this gives an indication that we were tired, wet, cold and very grumpy on the first night, so this might have influenced our overall opinions.
On that first night, after the 4 hour drive, OH made her one and only desperate trip to a nearby portaloo. On her return, she was very pale and explained to me in no uncertain terms that she would not be using one again. On entering the loo, she was greeted with a sign asking users to flush before and after use. She did so, and the bowl was flushed with a tide of stale urine from the tank, with the obvious accompaniment of the most overpowering stench. She has no alternative than to use it anyway, trying her hardest not to inhale. Clearly this was massively overdue draining/refilling, and the smell and experience resulted in her vomiting immediately afterwards. A lovely start to the weekend.
I must add, in balance to the above, that during the next afternoon a lorry did the rounds to empty the loo's, and when I braved one later that night it seemed clean and smelled chemically as you would expect. So in fairness it is very hit and miss, and depends when they are due cleaning as to how horrific the experience might be. Either way, if they are getting to the stage where the flush is simply pumping everyone elses wee around the bowl, they need to be emptied more frequently. As another reviewer has said, don't pitch too close to them, as unless you are quick to grab them, the doors swing shut with an almighty bang! Suffice to say we drove back to the main block facilities for the duration of the weekend. These too had their particular aroma, and in many parts are in need of maintenance, but were usable.
Speaking of the main block facilities, the pot washing sinks are to the rear of the toilets, on the outside wall of the shower block. Take a plastic bowl or a plug with you, as neither are provided, just a row of steel sinks and a temperature controlled tap with dubious pressure (it's shared with the showers, so when you're washing your cups spare a thought for the poor soul inside standing underneath a dribble trying to rinse off the shampoo).
With that said, the location of the site itself and the surrounding scenery is stunning, and ignoring the trials of the first night, is well worth the price we paid (even though I'm not a fan of 'per person' rates). The endless beaches and towering dunes made for a fun and exhausting time for all of us, however the sheer amount of broken glass was a huge negative, as I spent most of my time making sure the dog didn't end up with lacerations.
Night time brought a whole new reason to love this site - the complete lack of any ambient light. It has been a very long time since I have seen quite so many stars, and I could have spent the whole night sat outside gazing upwards - it was truly magnificent.
At night, the only noise we heard was the flapping of tents in the breeze. Not so much as a peep from other campers (or from us - we were a responsible group), but again the site was a long way from being full. We did have the occasional idiot tearing around the roads well in excess of the 20mph limit, who subsequently got a 'talking to'. Contrary to other reviews suggesting this is perfectly acceptable and people should just stay off the roadway - in places that simply isn't possible, and many of the corners are blind bends so such behaviour is totally irresponsible. The warden was spotted once over the weekend - I say warden, his pick-up truck was spotted anyway.
For the rest of the weekend we were blessed with sunshine and a constant coastal breeze, which made us all but forget our disastrous arrival, and by the time we were packing up we were contented again.
Overall, it was a good weekend, but much of this was down to ourselves and the company we had. If it was just us as a couple, we would be unlikely to make the journey down in favour of a closer rural/coastal site or one with better and cleaner facilities.

My wife and I and two little girls went to shell island for 4 nights camping. The weather was very nice except for the last night, the winds were very strong didn't sleep a wink well no one did. I would not recommend a family with young to go, that's if you want to sleep, the noise is terrible car radios playing till 2 in the morning, girls and lads screaming we didn't get a lot of sleep. The shop sells the basics etc. Staff are very friendly. We found the showers etc very basic but its camping. Chemical toilets are plentiful through out the site. I would say if your in your teens this site's for you

Arrived on the Thursday so wasn't to busy, did start to fill up by the weekend though.
Great beach and also a stony beach for crabbing, shell collecting and catching small fish in little rock pools.Kids loved it.
If you time it right you get to see the dolphins as the sun sets.
Pitched our tent near portaloos. Mistake as all day and night you have people gathering round toilets and through the night the doors slamming shut. Plus when they were being cleaned. Not a nice smell, also a lot of litter around the tent next day which we discovered to be loo roll. Errr. So don't pitch too near loos.
Toilet and shower block ok, not big enough for site but you just have to time it right, so don't go first thing in the morning or you will have to queue.
Shop ok sells all the basics but not enough bbq food probably better to go off the island to stock up from nearest shop. Also no beer sold in the shop, you have to buy it from the pub on the site,to takeaway. The pub is very small. Snackbar was expensive but the breakfast was priced well and was very nice.
Seating area's outside pub and snack bar and a little park.
Small gift shop selling seaside bits and icecream.
Camping shop selling all the stuff you forget.
Make sure you take good lighting as no lights on the island.
Was a bit noisy at night time as don't seem to be any rules but your on holiday. So !
All in all though we loved it there and will be returning again just not near the loos.

Made two three-night visits to this site in the past fortnight. On the first occasion we stumbled on a Chavs' convention and the second time they seemed to be having a Festival of Litter.
This site has the potential to be very, very good - the beaches and scenery are wonderful. HOWEVER they really do need to enforce their own rules. 1) They say no single sex groups are accepted? Really? The six teenage girls next to us giggled and shouted until after 2 am. 2) No noise after 11 pm. Really? See above. 3) Minimum 20 metre spacing from other campers? That was just a joke. 4) Specified dog-free fields. That must exclude the unaccompanied rottweiler which insisted on repeatedly trotting over to our tent then. 5) 20 mph speed limit. I had assumed this to be a maximum, not a minimum! 6) Warden patrols to enforce these rules. Oh please. In six nights/eight days, I did not see a warden even once.
The toilet and shower blocks are inadequate for the 'largest camp site in Europe'.
Both need upgrading and enlarging and the portaloos spread around the site were found, on the whole, to be disgusting.
Why oh why are some people so incapable of taking their litter a hundred yards or so to the skips provided? The amount of litter and dog mess was quite unbelievable.
As I said, this site has great potential which sadly remains untapped because of the appalling behaviour of (a minority) of campers. I'll gladly return when they've addressed this.

We went to shell island bank holiday weekend. It was full for the duration, so pitching in a decent spot, so that you weren't too close to anyone else proved difficult.
When pitching the tents, extremely high winds, very stressful. Site was full disrespectful people letting their dogs do their business anywhere without cleaning after.
The shop sells a lot, but it quite expensive, what do you expect.
The showers - not enough, cold water/or not enough water. Had to queue even at quiet times.
During the weekend the wind was that bad that people were having to leave with damaged tents. We had to take one of our larger ones down!
Although it is stunning, it was a let down weekend for us. We have been to shell island before, and we don't go camping to be in luxury, so the toilets and showers is all part of the experience. But the biggest downer was the gale force winds!
Horrendous! it has put us off I can tell you that much. Now to repair my broken tent!

Stayed on this campsite in August as a couple, primarily on the selling points of the surrounding beach and 20 metre between pitches rule.
Positives:
1/ Beaches were great. Massive stretches of sandy beach behind the dunes, and rocky beach around the Western side.
2/ Sand dune area was amazing. Kids looked to be enjoying playing on the campsite end, I took a walk down to the more conserved end and they are stunning to look at.
3/ On-site shops sold anything you could need. Didn't find them too expensive.
4/ View was lovely. Sunsets to the West, and Harlech casle to the North.
Negatives:
1/ As others have said, the site was filthy with other campers mess. They should tidy up after themselves, but as they don't, some tidying is needed by staff.
2/ 20mph limit is too fast.
3/ 20 metre rule needs to be stressed by staff. We had no problems, but saw one poor couple have some lads turn up and annex their tent in the middle of a quiet field.
4/ Well short on shower facilities for busy periods.
However, enjoyed our stay. Would recommend avoiding weekends though.

We stayed for 1 night on shell island whilst touring in this beautiful part Wales. We found a good, quiet spot a long way from the facilities, overlooking the sea. The best thing about this campsite is the location, sitting outside the van watching the sun set over the sea was lovely. Good walks on the beach, found some pretty shells.
The downside of this campsite is that the best spots are a long walk from toilet and showers, portaloos dotted around but not the cleanest. The main toilet block was ok, could do with an update. Showers were reasonably clean but need more ,same with washing up area, major queues to use the sinks and water pressure was terrible. The shop was well stocked and a good camping shop on site.
I would recommend this campsite for the views and location but feel they could improve on the facilities and general cleanliness.

Used Shell Island as a stopover whilst touring Wales, so only had one night. We chose to park in the top carpark overlooking the sea which was fantastic. We watched the sunsets colours in the evening sky.Superb.Young un played on the beach in view all the time, whilst her indoors cooked dinner. Great view from the dinner table included.
Didn't use the facilities as we were so far from them, but this probably was the reason we didn't hear any loud music.Just the sea!
We attempted to fill up with fresh water at several water points but gave up in the end due to low water pressure.
We paid £17, but worth it for the scenery we had, also lucky with the weather as we had been travelling in the rain for many miles to get there.
Got to say liked the idea of being able to stay till 3pm, we made the most of it and moved on the following day after another spell on the beach at 2pm.

Beautiful scenery and surrounding area however site itself was awful, litter everywhere, manky toilets, site speed limit of 20mph (! with little kids everywhere, 20mph is way way way too fast!), people driving to the toilets / showers / shop.
We had to clean up our site and remove the bottles, bbq wrappers and fag ends before we could pitch our tent.
A beautiful location completely and utterly spoiled by (some of) the people that use it. More site wardens needed to pick up litter left by previous campers, toilets need cleaning more than once a day (what with being the busiest month and all), reduce the speed limit
