1988 - 2003 My family used to travel Wales camping, I have always preferd to be outdoors rather than inside, but when we visited "shell Island" when I was 14, the whole family was taken back. The camp site is set just on the coast of Wales, with mountains climbing high in the background and Harlech Castle jutting out from the sea. You are surrounded by golden sands with clear blue water soaking up the sun. The green fields are overlooked by huge sand dunes over 30 feet high.
You cannot find a fault with this site. We have been going back at least once a year every year since we found it. It is ran by a lovely family. and has many regular visitors.
They even catch their own lobsters and cook them straight from the sea, if you want to treat your loved one why not treat them to a lobster breakfast for about £3.50 a lobster. hmmm
This is the campsite where generation after generation of families keep on coming back to for their perfect camping holiday and if you are a regular visitor you can even find a secret beach, a beautiful secluded spot for you to enjoy.
I hope you visit Shell Island. You deserve to go there at least once.

April 2004 Just come back from an Easter break at Shell Island and what a fantastic Easter had by all. The site has a fantastic childrens area that has been updated, for which is very colourful. Tried to get a meal at the "Queen Victoria" pub at the end of the road, and what a joke!! we waited ages for a seat, then when went to order to be told Kitchen has shut at 9pm. Shell Island was quite busy. As a brain teaser when you book in take a look at the photos of their horses and read their names underneath picture. Overall had an excellent break and will be going back in a few weeks.

end July 2003 visited last weekend in July and had a lovely time, though ended up sea bathing, (gave up on showers) and used the loos in the Club. Well stocked shop, good facilities etc. but main attraction the stunning views. Like the 20 metre rule - You can be as private as you wish ...

Last ten years I agree with one of the reviewers about this site having outgrown its' facilities. Also, we have experienced several occasions where there has been a LOT of noise and litter. It's a real shame because the beaches are fantastic, it has a slipway and the novel fact that at high Spring tides you are cut off from the mainland. They really need to get more shower and loo blocks - avoid bank hols/industrial fortnight - it's just too busy.

July 2003 Large site , must be 20mtrs between Tents. On the beach. Cafe, Bar and shop on site. Childrens play area.Due to size and layout of site many areas are secluded by hillocks or sand dunes. Showers and toilet block are at main entrance, which can be a long way off many of the sites.

July 2003 A beautiful place to camp, right on the beach. For this it is highly recommended.
It also has the benefit of no caravans so you wont find yourself being laughed at inflating your airbeds by someone lording it up in a caravan!
The only downside is the lack of showers. When we went it was busy and there simply arn't enough showers. If you go there prepare to let you hygiene standards drop.......

june 2003 Have had many happy family hols at Shell Island, The facilities are a bit basic but the scenery is wonderfull, you can camp where you like and its very cheap, Harlech is just a short drive away which has a swimming pool and a beautiful castle, which you can see from the island and is lit up at night. there are three beaches two are sandy and one is a pebble beach, a childrens playground, laundrette and tavern which is attached to a snack bar there is also a resturant on site.Barmouth is about 20mins away I would recommend this site to anyone but they do not allow tourers unless they have a tent for sleeping purposes. A warden patrols at night and music is not allowed after 11.00pm so it is lovely and peacefull.

May 2003 It was our first time at Shell Island following a recommendation from a friend. We had a very good time, the Island is very spacious and one of the site rules is you must be at least 20 meters away from other tents. The only draw back is the toilet facilities, one block in the centre of the island, so if you are camping at the other end its a long drive or walk (if you've had a drink)to the toilet. We had a camp fire on the second night which the kids really enjoyed. The beach is very clean and the sand dunes provide hours of fun for the children. We will be going back but this time armed with a portable loo!

July 2002 Ive been going to shell island for over 20 years. If your looking for Caravan & Camping Club standards you will be very dissapointed, the loos are outdated the shower block is acceptable, there is a pub and resturant on site with good beer and food although a touch expensive but the beaches & views are fantastic. If you enjoy space when your camping and great views then this is the place for you .

aug 2001 This is a fab place out of season, if you want space, peace and quiet and safe beaches. there are the usual facilities like loos, pub, shop etc... Avoid the main august holiday weeks because its packed and very noisy.
