This was our first time camping in 30 years so we approached it carefully by only booking for two nights. We needn't have worried, what a great site. We arrived the Sunday after the holidays so the site was quiet as most families had set of for home before we arrived.(although the site is huge we were told it can get very, very busy during the holidays). We checked in at reception about 2pm and were greeted by a friendly member of staff who gave us some pointers on the best places to pitch our tent. Our pitch was directly overlooking the sea, what a view, if your lucky you can even see dolphins lazily swimming past at certain times of the day.
Needless to say 2 days wasn't long enough so we booked the rest of the week.
Some of the Good points: On site Bar, that also sells beer and wine to take away(good prices too) Cafe that also does takeaway food. Well stocked shop Camping shop, hires out freezer blocks Main shower and toilet block. 20 metre min spacing between tents Good beach
Bad point: Only one complaint, if you camp far from the main toilet block you have to rely on the potable toilet units, these I'm afraid seemed to be cleaned only once in the week we were there, so after a couple of days really became unusable, shame really as every thing else was great.
Will definitely go again, sipping wine as the sunsets over the sea, being warmed by the glow from a log burning fire(can be hired or bought from the camping shop) can't be beat as a stress buster. But I think I'll take a porta loo this time!

This was only our second camping holiday. We were amazed by the wonderful view when we arrived. The staff were friendly and helpful. We pitched near the toilets and showers because of the kids. The toilets and showers were quite nice and they were very clean. There was a good children's play area and a cafe serving meals and snacks. The views from the tents are great and there are wardens who make sure people don't pitch too close to each other. The only thing that was negative was the boy racers racing their cars up and down the hills. We were a bit scared that children could end up getting hurt by them. All in all though it was a great site with lots of stuff to do and a lovely beach.

We last went camping at shell island 12 years ago, went the other day and it was still as brilliant. We have been other places camping, but Shell island is our favourite. Unfortunately couldnt get a pitch on the first night, went somewhere else. Returned to shell island, to be told their was availability, we put our tent up, and had a fantastic time. All around were loads of notices about zero policy to loud music and disturbances after 11 p.m funnily enough there were rules at the other campsite about only families and couples allowed. At shell island that is not the case, but you have to adhere to the rules, you have to have your tent put up well away from other tents, it was bliss. We are going back again soon,we love it there.

I've been camping at Shell Island for over 25 years now and can only say how fantastic it is. It's THE most beautiful campsite you will find in the Uk with the most fantastic views. I practically grew up there and now its my turn to take my young family too. I know a lot of people go on and on about there being not enough toilets on the site and how a site of their size should have more. But if you took the time to ask the staff about it, they would tell you that they have tried for years to get the planning permission from the Welsh council to build more and they are always refused. So they kindly lay on the portaloos to cover particularly busy periods insteads. Personally I think its a small price to pay for the gorgeous weather, endless things to see and do, friendly staff, great shop, unrivalled views etc etc etc. Will I be going again????? I'm packing the trailer now!

Spent a few breezy April days at this site. If you are going out of season, it’s probably best to camp in the dunes where it is more sheltered. Having camped at the edge of the beach, I spent a nervous few hours replacing pegs during a stormy morning. Three neighbouring tents blew cleanaway!
Thankfully there is a well stocked camping store on site that sells a good range of products and I was able to buy a better set of pegs at a reasonable price. You could literally turn up at the site with nothing and buy everything you need. The supermarket is also wellstocked and there’s even a small gift shop on site. The large café is basic butclean with friendly staff. However the café walls are lined with arcade machines and ‘toy-grab’ machines that made visits with my 5 year old either difficult or expensive.
The views from the site are fantastic across Tremadog Bay, with Cardigan Bay to the left and Harlech Castleto the right. There are about 3 miles of shoreline to explore, including a harbour, rock pools, and lots of sand. The grassed areas are well kept, but litter is present. There are no recycling facilities, only large green skips scattered around the site.
This is a hilly site and very few of the pitches will be perfectly level. Unfortunately my stay here was marred by having to avoid the children’s play area one evening whilst a drunken rowing couple were shouting and swearing at each other, keeping my young child away from the shell-suitclad teenagers openly smoking pot and the general ‘chav’ atmosphere on the site. As I only spent three days here in April I may have got the wrong impression of this site

August 2005 After spending many a year holidaying at Shell Island as a youngster I recently went back with my husband and 3 year old son.
How dissapointed I was! The site itself is fantastic, not the usual square field, there are lots of places to explore and pitch your tent. The sand dunes are fab, beach is fab!
The toilets and showers are not the best but who cares... your camping!
It was the noise in the evening that spoilt it. The warden patrols and yes the music went off at 11ish but the lads driving their cars up and down the sand dunes at 4.30am is no joke!
We were constantly having to watch our son as the same type of idiots raced across the grass during the day rather than driving on the roads!
All in all great place let down by idiots having total disregard for normal family campers!
Will we go again?...... probably, well out of season, failing that the tent will be on ebay!

August 2005 Fantastic site - my idea of proper camping. Didn't have any real problems with toilets (although could have been cleaner) or showers. Loved the freedom to pitch where we wanted and have real fires. Kids had plenty to do and were more than happy playing in the dunes in front of the tent for hours and collecting shells- makes a great change from having to spend money on occupying them and a I actually got to read some of my book ! The only down side was a storm than nearly blew us away - but then again this added to the excitment of the holiday ! Will definitely be back next year with more ropes to secure the tent

August 2005 Lovely location, fantastic that you can camp anywhere on the island, however very disappointed with the lack of toilets. Having been camping for many years I feel the site lets it's self down with lack of toilet and shower facilities. A campsite of this size should have more. Although I'm not put of visiting again, for the spectacular scenery and family atmosphere.

August 2005 Have just spent a wonderfullfew days on my all time fav campsite, I've been going to shell island since I was young and the magic is still there, even though the site full sign went up just after we got there. Yes things were busy there but the atmosphere was great and not too much noise. great chill out holiday.

August 2005 We went recently and had no problems. My advice is to turn left and keep going as far as you can into the dunes, but try and arrive as early as possible, at lunch time. Have a good look around and don't take the first pitch you see. There are a few "hidden" pitches in the dunes - you can easily tell if they have been used before but you do need to search. There are portaloos which fill up by mid day, so a bucket is essential. You need to take a car to the toilets and showers (or 1 mile walk). Showers are a no-no in the morning because of the q's but afternoon onwards no problem.
There is some noise during the day in the main camping fields but generally nothing much after dark. We had a group of young adults making noise near us but were quiet at night. Someone had complained about them being untidy and the warden who does patrol regularly was soon on to them to sort it out. The dunes are fantastic for the kids, the beach is 2 mins walk away and a crabing trip to the causeway is good fun. For this take a mesh washing machine soap holder and tie to some string weigh with stones and put some bait in (bacon or squid from the shop). Or buy strings from shop at £1.50 each. Go as the tide is just going out.
The bar is a bit rough though you can sit out and watch the kids in the playarea. The shops sell basic food stuff and camping gear can be bought in case of emergency. There is a Tescos about 6-8 miles away in Portmadock. Harlech Castle is nearby. I would recommend a stay, but it is all down to being lucky with your pitch and the people nearby - but isn't that the case wherever you go! Enjoy your trip. PS you cannot book at Shell Island but it does seem to have an infinate capacity.
