I love shell island and once again it didn't disappoint ! I never go camping during school hols but really wanted to go and glad I did ! Cant wait to go back again ! The beach was lovely and clean and the site was spotless ! There was a lot of families and groups all just having fun and if your a dog lover then you'll luv it ! Just please clean up after your dog ! Camp staff cannot really be expected to search site to make sure there's no muck where people want to camp ! Shame we have to go over dinas Mawddwy to get there ! Puts me in the horrors in our little old van ! But well worth it for the fantastic views on my shell island

My partner and myself recently camped here (7-8-15) for a 2 night stay. On our arrival we reported to reception to book in, and saw a notice stating that the site was full and if you hadn't pre booked you would have to try again in the morning when there would be 100 pitches available on a first come basis, as we had booked on line and were with 3 other couples we were OK.
The people in reception were very helpful and told us we could pitch our tent anywhere on the site providing we were 25 m from other campers. When we found our pitch there were two camper vans nearby and it was apparent that we would be closer than the 25mts required, but as most campers they said it would be fine and made us feel welcome.
As I have previously said the site was full but there was still room to pitch up.
There are 2 blocks of toilets in the left hand side of the site, theses were always clean, and stocked with toilet paper and hand towels.
The beach was approximately 300m from our pitch and is fantastic, a long sandy beach with dunes behind it. Dogs are allowed on and our Jack Russell had a great time.
The main complex has a pub with a large outdoor seating area, the prices are reasonable and it carries a wide range of beers and also deals on cans for take away. There is also a food hall and a pizza a bar which was doing excellent trade but unfortunately I cant comment on the quality as we didn't try them, but we are planning a return visit but out of the school holidays to see what its like then, so will no doubt try them then.
Overall an great site with terrific views all round, clean and friendly considering its immense size.

The site has many positives and some negatives.
The staff are all friendly and happy to help, the views are excellent with the freedom to pitch where you can within 20 meters of your neighbour, what more could you ask for. It's a shame not everyone is as considerate as 20meters soon turns into 20 feet.
Shops are very well stocked and bar and restaurant is cheap you can sit outside or take away with bins provided for rubbish disposal, another shame is not all know what a bin is for and leave rubbish on tables and strewn around the camp. Staff are fairly quick in removing it but that is not the point.
Toilets and showers are provided free which is a bonus, however can get a little dirty if the weather is poor, I do think investment should be made to improve and extend them to cater for the masses that queue to use them. I chose off peak times to visit but that doesn't change toilets with no lights and showers with no locks and vandalised. My wife refused to use the showers due to previous users leaving them a disgrace.
All said its a great place to visit and we will return, just don't expect glamping. !

Amazing site. Beautiful and breathtaking views and surroundings. Even when we had a huge storm and our tent was wrecked with the winds. We were determined not to leave. We patched up the tent with the help of staff and other campers. And went on to have an amazing time. Can't wait to return.

First time visiting the site and had a mixed week. On arrival the reception staff were friendly and welcoming. In fact all the staff on site were great and friendly that we came across.
The mini market and camping shop are both very well equipped an reasonably priced.
Ice pack hire is available at the camping shop and again the cost is low with a small deposit.
We used the cafe once for breakfast and that was fine and cheap. There is a pub on site as well as a games room plus gift shop.
Around the main complex there is a play ground for kids and also the only shower block on the site. Its free and I found it clean.
This site is huge. Depending where you pitch depends on your experience. Me and my girlfriend were meeting up with a friend with a young family so we had to be fairly close to the toilets which meant been close to one of the toilet blocks that are dotted around the site. There are some amazing remote spots in the trees near the sand dunes which is where I would have preferred. But sadly this wasn't the case.
The beaches are clean and offered sandy and rocky parts, great for rock pooling and crab fishing is very popular.
Despite the site being manic with us going away at the start of the school holidays we found the site very clean.
Now bad points, Some of which ARE NOT THE SITES FAULT.
1. They let way too many people on site. It might be registered for 800 pitches but I think that was decided long before tents got a lot bigger, and finding a flat spot is hard as most of the site is on slopes. This also meant that the camping 20 metres away from someone else went out the window.
2. The site has many rules which aren't a problem as they all make sense. But no one seems to enforce them. Its not supposed to have large same sex groups. There were loads of groups of lads in their early 20's, playing music till all hours (again a rule of music after 11. 30pm was often broken), We saw a couple of stag do's and hen parties there, again that is one of the rules ignored. People having fires on the floor and camping in parts that are clearly sign posted as not for campers.
3. The toilet blocks around the site could only be described as being in the same state as festival toilets. Truly horrible with the only plus being that the lights didn't work at night so you couldn't see the state of them.
Being the school holidays I expected it to be busy, just not as loud as it was. I will go again to the site but NOT in any form of school holidays. It felt like being in some sort of horrible Butlins at times.
This site is perfect for a group of families to get together. Its great for kids with lots to do, the local villages and the nearby castle is a must as the views are stunning.
I'd advise you to find a sheltered spot as the weather can be very unforgiving with the wind coming off the sea, We arrived on a Saturday and space was limited. Luckily we got to move to a different spot on the Tuesday.
The only reason I've marked down the site is really because of some of the people the site seems to attract and that isn't the sites fault. I will go again, probably after the school holidays where I hope I can hopefully write a much better review and have a generally better experience. This site is stunning. Roll on September

An unusual concept in camping: somewhere for country-folk to get a taste of city life! The site is literally a tent city - it claims to be the largest camp site in Europe. You can expect to be packed in with fellow campers, see authentic city-traffic driving past your tent, and queue for all the facilities. However it is set in very beautiful and dramatic mountainous countryside, with a sea view, so it's not all that authentic really.
For the urban-based camper though, it's an opportunity to get a taste of living on a council estate. And for the council-estate-based camper, it's an opportunity to drink heavily, play loud bass-heavy music, drive dangerously (including letting your youngsters drive on their own, or just sit out the windows holding on to roof bars/sit on tailgate, etc. , ) generally annoy lesser campers, and call them c**ts when they complain.
This can be most entertaining for the philosophical camper (especially at the weekends): they won't miss the TV when there's actual Police action on-site dealing with domestic drama; or real-life injuries as kids fall off cars (see above. )
There are a handful of site rules that seek to ruin this societal spectacle on Shav Island. E. G. You may think the 20m-between-tents rule would mean you end up with lots of space round your tent; or that the no-music-after-11pm rule means it's deathly quiet and you're forced to go to bed. Fear not! the rules are flouted and the commotion continues.
There is the traditional shower/toilet/wash-up block if you like to drive for such things (or even take a 10-min walk, preferably avoiding the roads. ) There are several port-a-loos dotted around, which are sometimes usable but often blocked. Any there are ample cold-running water points too.
The on-site watering-hole sells various brands of wife-beater, but don't expect anything posh like real-ale. The shop has a reasonable range of basic groceries, plus the camping requisites store is well stocked.
I suspect the true secret to avoiding getting pi**ed-off at Shell Island, is to go off-piste. The site spreads for miles into the sand dunes and woodland, where you can camp in relative isolation. But this is akin to wild-camping and isn't everyone's cup of tea.
The site runs adjacent to a long, clean sandy beach, with fairly safe shallow bathing. Further afield, Harlech has an impressive castle, and an even more impressive ice-cream shop over the road. Barmouth is the nearest town, with a fairly good Co-op, fairly bad sea-front, and not much else. And of course, there's the amazing countryside, hills and mountains to explore.

I must say what a fabulous place this could be. The views of the mountains and the sea made all the other problems of this site bearable, just. If you take you own loo and camp in the dunes away from everyone else, I can imagine that your experience would be fine. However when we arrived, far from the acres of space we expected, it was rammed. We did manage to get a spot by asking nicely if the neighbours minded us being closer than 20m.
On the whole, our experience was not great. The toilets kept blocking, which meant that massive queues developed. The toilets also seemed to be filthy all the time due to the obvious inability of some people to use them properly. It felt like living on the set of Eastenders; we saw the police arrive twice during our stay, saw kids hanging out of the back of cars, driving cars, cars speeding, fights, lots of swearing, far too much loud music, drunkeness, people being threatened, etc. Etc. Groups are supposed to be no less than 20m from each other without prior agreement, but there seems to be no way to enforce this.
I found the shop to be ok, well stocked, and no more expensive than the local shops. The staff were as helpful as they could be given the busyness of the site. The showers were clean enough and hot, but go between 6 and 7. 30pm if you don't want to queue for 30mins. We felt it was expensive as we had to pay adult rates for our older teenagers and the facilities were very inadequate for the amount of people.

Having read all the reviews about shell island, I decided to book anyway, as I figured that the location and vast area to find a pitch would outweigh any negatives. Boy, was I right. This was my first camping trip for over 20 years, and my wife's first ever. We have both fell in love with the place. The reception staff were very friendly when we booked in, with plenty of advice about where on site was more sheltered, due to the wind and rain, and the weather forecast was an extremely addition. The guy on the barrier was very friendly and had time for a quick word every time we went in or out.
The area we chose to pitch was slightly exposed to the wind coming in off the sea, but we only have a small tent, so are not too bothered as long as it's not blowing a gale. We pitched close to one of the toilet blocks yet close to the beach as well.
The only complaint we have about the toilets was the lights in the ladies wasn't working for the last 2 nights we were there, and the Mrs didn't like peeing with a head torch on.
The mini supermarket was well stocked and reasonably priced and the staff were friendly and helpful. It was the same in the camping supply shop and the cafe.
We both agree that sitting overlooking the beach, watching the sunset, followed by the wonderful display of the Milky Way at night while sitting by the camp fire makes everything else pale in comparison. These truly took our breath away.
Overall it was a very pleasant and relaxing visit to Shell island and both of us want to return.

Very different from other campsites I've visited due to its huge size. Camp near a toilet block if that's very important to you. Or camp in more remote and secluded spot in sand dunes or small gladed woods if you don't mind a walk ( or a drive ) to the facilities. Great access to the beach of course but don't camp too close to it as you will be annoyed by the wind before long.

We had a wonderful weekend here.
This spot is so beautiful, views of hills and mountains and of stunning coast line. Easy access to the beach, great for rockpooling.
Site is well tended and staff are friendly. The shower and toilet facilities are basic, but work fine. There is a supermarket, camp shop, gift shop (great ice creams) bar and a cafe. There is a play area for kids. Toilets are dotted around the showers are in the main complex.
We had a breakfast whilst here and it was good value for money.
The best thing about the site is that you can pitch where you like. The only rule being that you must be no nearer than 20meters to neighbouring pitches. The lady suggested a good 20 minute drive around to find our spot. It is beautiful and unspoilt and well worth a visit. I never realised that Wales had such beautiful coastline, nearby Barmouth is stunning. We loved our stay here, simple and beautful.
