I re-visited this site last May with my family. We have been many times in the past and have always enjoyed our stay; the beach is wonderful it is a great relaxing place to be. The surrounding area is lovely and the on site pub and shop offers all you can possibly ask for.

However, we made the mistake of staying over a bank holiday weekend. This meant that it was very noisy. Inconsiderate people were playing music very loudly all through the night, and as you can imagine, this was not what we had come camping for. Also, the toilets and showers are usually more than adequate, however, the sheer number of people who were on the island at this particular time caused them to be blocked, dirty and smelly.

So, my advice is if you want a party weekend go on a bank holiday. If you want to appreciate the beauty of Shell Island, then go some other time!

Been to shell island a few times and it's my all time favourite place as we don't live too far and used to go there for days out as a kid and now I take my daughter. Dog loves the freedom of being able to run for hours on the beach. Amazing views of the sea. Brill place just to chill and do nothing

Just returned from another brilliant weekend at Shell Island. Children love the trick or treating and fireworks. Not as many people as last years end of season weekend but maybe because owners have introduced tighter restrictions regarding unaccompanied youngsters camping (well done). All staff are very friendly and helpful. First time we have witnessed the tide over the causeway. We will be returning as soon as season starts next year. Invest in portaloo/tent as mobile toilets do get bit messy sometimes. Barmouth is about 10 mins drive away.

We spent bank holiday on Shell Island and had a fantastic time. We set out on the Friday morning at 5am for a 2.5 hour journey. You cannot book your pitch on Shell Island, its first come first served and we certainy wern't the first there.
We finally got booked in after waiting for about 4 hrs.
Wow, its worth the wait. Ive been to shell island a few times before and I am always amazed at its beauty.
The toilets are the only down side on the camp, but they don't spoil my holiday. I was told, for the island to install any more toilet blocks, just to direct another water (pipe) supply would cost in the region of 1 million pounds, a little expensive to say the least. We take a bucket for night time.

The views and beaches are breathtaking.
The wardens, and reception staff are all very friendly and helpful.
We didnt experience any noise problems where we were camped even though it was a very busy bank holiday(2000 pitches filled I think).
Theres a great shop that stocks quite alot, not alcohol though, you can purchase it from the bar but its quite expensive as you would expect.
Theres a good take away cafe, amusements, gift shop and camping shop. Also theres a lovely little pub with lots of seats outside, this was very popular for dog owners and smokers.
There is a spar shop a couple of miles away with a lovely butchers next to it which is a little cheaper than using the sites shop.
Overall, as you can see from my review Shell Island is a brilliant campsite, no electric, lovely views and its by the sea, enjoy!

We have just returned from a five day stay at Shell Island. It was our first official camping trip and we loved it. We had purchased a Vango Vail for our trip and it did us proud. The site is beautiful and the beaches are perfect. From the sandy beach with the huge sweeping dunes over to the rocky beach with the best rock pools ever found! My children and my friends children had the best time exploring and playing on the shores. The site is very clean, but of course there are always exceptions to the rule, and some people leave litter and glass bottles on the beach and site.

The on site facility's are great, the mini market, gift shop and camping suppliers are all really well stocked.
There are so many variants of different locations to pitch your tent, including the beach, dunes, sweeping green fields and harbour. It can be very windy near to shore though so bear that in mind when pitching your tent. We have also found the best website to check for Shell Island is www.Shellislandcampers.Co.Uk , this site works along side the official site and gives a whole host of information and answers to important questions regarding the island. We did not encounter any noisy groups but it seem to have been clamped down on very recently. The unsavoury language from some adults though is beyond belief. We heard effing and jeffing everywhere, not a good example to our small children.
The toilets and showers were ok, yes there are some queues buts I suppose that's camping life and its best to take it in your stride, if its really important to you, best to pitch in eye sight of the shower block then you can monitor the queues! :)
My only bug bear is that the showers and toilets are so grubby and sodden. You are always encountering the wash sinks with hair in, toilet paper stuffed in toilets and three inches of  sandy water underfoot in the showers.  The flushing system need updating. They always look like they need a really good clean and that can be very off putting.
Anyway needless to say the pros outnumber the cons overwhelmingly and we all think Shell Island is absolutely brilliant and will be very hard to beat! x

I have been coming to Shell Island at least once a year for the last 6 years (the first time with a 6 month old baby).
Yes ok back to basics camping - toilets a bit foul, no washing up facilities but all was worth it for the incredible views.
Child friendly fun and wonderful beaches providing every type of rock pool, sand, and dune a child could want.
However I did not go this year after last years awful experience.  Groups of drunken youths who were obscene and intimidating (even to a 6ft male friend of mine) I am delighted by reports I have had by the change of rules regarding youths and hope that next year I will revisit.

Just got back from Shell Island this afternoon. Third time we've been back. Absolutely fantastic place, spent the last couple of days sat outside of the bar watching my four year old son playing on the playground. Very clever putting the playground next to pub!
Bit windy this time but clever positioning of camper, gazebo and wind breaks ensured us a sheltered spot.
Lived on the island for 3 days no problem, supermarket well stocked and the snack bar is quite good if you don't feel like cooking!
The only issue that goes against the place is the lack of toilet blocks, which wasn't much of an issue this time as we pitched quite close to the main toilet block.
I recommend this place highly camping prices good value for money, gift shop, camping shop, supermarket, bar and snackbar  not to highly priced. Can't Wait to go back again!

Love Shell Island - 1st visit there Aug 2006, storms/floods & soaking wet clothes but we (2 adults/2 children) loved it, been back 4 times.
It is back to basics camping, no electric or structured pitches but enough space for privacy.
Lovely beach.
Well equipped shop on site. Gift shop. Bar/Cafe & adult only Bar.
Will definitely be back 2-3 times this year and would recommend the Halloween/Bonfire weekend (end of season for Shell Island) - fireworks are spectacular.

Just returned today from Shell Island, this is the first time we have visited Shell Island and only the second time was have camped so were a bit nervous as we had read varying reports.

Shell Island is beautiful the beach is lovely very clean and the Island is great as you can pitch anywhere - we found a great spot.  The shops are good and the local village shop in LLanbedr is fantastic - really good deli choices.  Like I said the Island is lovely definitely back to basics camping.

On the down side though the toilets are so smelly and the portoloos foul if visited at the wrong time - we were kept awake by some noisy campers but we mentioned it to the warden and they were gone! - the warden also came out another night when there was loud music to tell people to turn it off so the 11pm role is definitely very strict - however as you can camp anywhere you can avoid large fields which are likely to be noisy.

In conclusion I liked Shell Island it is back to basics and the next time we go we will be investing in a chemical toilet and toilet tent! which is a small price to pay to camp in such a beautiful spot.

Spent 3 great days there been twice before last year,
showers a big improvement! great shop and pub.
plenty of room love the no pitching within 20 metres rule!
can be a bit windy but over all a great site cant wait to go back.
one small moan would be nice to be able to book,
long drive if no space, but such a big site not been turned away yet.
If your looking for a nice peace-full place where your kids are safe it's well worth a visit
