We have just returned from our first visit to shell island, we booked a weeks stay but sadly left 2 days early because of the weather. We arrived sat 2nd June and although the site was very busy we still has plenty of choice where to pitch the tent.

We found the site clean and tidy. We had no problems with noise or nuisance campers. The shower/toilet blocks were basic but usable. There was queues for the showers in a morning but I chose to go back later in the day.

The laundrette was very handy with the bad weather, the shop was very well stocked although very pricey. I have read a lot of reviews about shell island being rowdy and full of drunken chavs but I found the site to be fantastic!

I loved the views, I loved watching the sunset on an evening and ill never forget watching the dolphins. We were very sad to have to leave early but we didn't want to risk any damage to our tent as some other campers did due to the strong winds.

I called in at the office on our way out to let them know that we was leaving early and they kindly gave us a credit note for 2 days for our next visit, which will be in august!cant wait, hopefully the weather will be better! I will visit shell island again and again without a doubt.

Situated on outstanding beach landscape between Harlech and Barmouth, this site carries the burden of its sheer size. Access over the tidal causeway gives fewer problems than you might think.

Nearby are the remote feeling and rocky Rhinog summits, and Shell Island's village - sized temporary summer population are unlikely to be found up there. How I longed for those places each evening, when locked into a bank holiday minimum booking - we drove over the causeway and back to the green fields of Shell Island and so off to the beach for a quiet walk, a lonely walk, the majority doing what they do in the early evening.

At Shell Island, you will see how people live their lives, the idyll of a family next to the beach being tempered by things that don't make good reading.

 Welcome to Hell Island.

I have just returned from Chav Island. Where do I start well we went jubilee weekend the site was packed. There was still room to camp though. It is huge and beautiful location. The site said families and couples don't believe that. The toilets were 10 minutes walk they were temporary they were dirty and blocked. The main toilets were no better 11showers for men, long queues.

One evening I was treated to the Police arresting someone.

One last night the camp laid on a jubilee party. This meant a crap DJ swearing and playing this over PA to the whole camp. The promised firework display was one rocket, we kept kids up for them to be disappointed. I also got to see security escorting someone from the bar clearly having drunk too much. The beer sold by the staff at the site.

There is nothing good for the site apart from the location.

We had a lovely time with our friends and 2 small children. Lots of open space for kids to tire themselves out.

There is defo a need for more toilets on the north side, there is one permanent cabin there that has 1 toilet for ladies with no mirror. Whereas the gents have 2 toilets, 2 urinals and a mirror. They did seem to get cleaned often but then dirtied again just as quickly.

No noise from any other groups and hardly saw security at all.

Much fun watching the cars on the causeway when the tide is in!

2nd time here & 2nd review of this site & my feelings have not changed.

Quite simply if the weather is fair then your stay here will probably be a pleasant one. Yes it is a little rustic & the facilities are a little dated but they are adequate. If you go there on a Bank Holiday then expect queue's for the shower. This goes for most sites on a BH. If you can get out & about then the beaches are nice, kids will be entertained crabbing or on the sand dunes, you can relax at night with a barbie and/or fire without some health & safety mad warden lecturing you on the risks of such an activity.

On the negative side of things first & foremost is the bad weather that seems to plague this part of Wales. This is a naturally windy site but on our stay there was a yellow warning issued by the MET office, warning signs were put up around the site & believe me it was rough when that wind & rain came in. Fortunately we pitched right into some bushes & we survived without too much damage although we might as well been camping in a pond, but there were many others exposed in the middle of fields which were not so lucky. Many tents were trashed or abandoned, although I have to admit it was a little entertaining in a sort of sick way watching these tents getting a beating.

Another bad point is some of the characters this place attracts. We had some moron racing round the field wheel spinning & handbrake turning. Quite dangerous & made a mess of the field. Security did chuck em off later that day thank god.

In summary, check the weather carefully, don't commit by booking. Give it a miss & go elsewhere or go again when the weather report is better.

We arrived on a Friday night to the start of a beautiful sunset over the bay.

Spent a good 20 minutes looking for an ideal spot for our Motorhome, which isn't a problem.

The site was fairly empty, but the place is huge, so there was still a lot of people.

Something straight away just didn't feel right, like we didn't belong here.

Anyway, we found a nice level pitch in one of the many fields. This was in the No Dog area, which most people didn't quite understand what that meant as they walked their dogs through the field on the roads which are clearly marked with No Dogs.

We were awoken by a loud family shouting at their kids at around 6:30am and this continued for many hours (which seemed to be a common theme around the site).

Once I surfaced, I took a stroll around the island to find somewhere better to pitch and every time I found somewhere nice, I found another reason not to pitch there.

The Shell Island Security team seemed to be busy giving many people a good ticking off for something or other, so that was it, enough for us.

So, we left and headed to Lake Bala for the weekend instead where it was gloriously peaceful.

If you are looking for a site that rules can be broken and are looking for that party atmosphere then this site is for you. If you are going for the stunning views, but fancy a bit of peace, my advise would be head somewhere else.

Horses for Courses, but this Horse was not for this Course.

A friend of mine has since said that this site is known as Shellsuit Island, a name that fits perfectly.

My husband and I chose this campsite as we liked the idea of finding our own perfect pitch on our own island and we were not disappointed. It was quite quiet when we went (not school holidays) and we found a lovely secluded space behind a dune with a view out over the water. Obviously the disadvantage of seclusion is the distance from the facilities but we were still close to the road and our car so if we were feeling lazy we just drove to the toilets at bed time! I noticed a few campers had near us had their own toilet tents which I guess would be a nice investment if you camped here regularly and like to be out-of-the-way in comfort. We had a lovely barbecue with lobster from the shop (what a nice surprise it was to see that in a campsite shop!) and samphire we had picked locally ourselves. Our only disappointment was the bar closed earlier than we had expected so we missed our nightcap, but it does warn to check opening times when they are quieter.

We have just returned from 3 days/3 nights at Shell Island and have some mixed feelings about it. On the plus side the location and the views from this “Island” are second to none in Wales. We were fortunately enough to have some very good weather (although one night was awful, with gale force winds and pelting rain – good old blighty hey!) and the views across to the Llyn and back towards the foothills of Snowdonia really are something else – outstanding. The beaches on the “Island” are beautiful and spotlessly clean and the rock pools were great fun for my little one. The “Island” is huge so there are plenty of places in the 300 campable acres to pitch on, although a lot of this is quite hilly or exposed to the elements, so although you will have no problem finding a pitch if you are after a particular flat or sheltered spot, I’d suggest arriving as soon as you can on your chosen day.

We particularly liked that we found a pitch which was pretty flat and fairly sheltered near the North end Cabin and it was set back enough from the road for us not to have to worry about our 3 yr old running around, there were no cars nearby so that was a definite bonus for us. The whole place has a pretty relaxed and laid back feel about it which is wonderful although unfortunately this attitude seemed to apply to the facilities as well, which wasn’t so good. My major issue with this place was hygiene, or lack of it. While we were there, there was no evidence that the nearby port-a-loo was cleaned on a daily basis. There was always rubbish in the bins and water leakage on the floors and on the final day when I found the ladies toilet blocked, I was forced to use the gents, which were terrible, very smelly and excrement on the walls, not at all pleasant. Also, considering there are 300 acres for people to use there is only one central shower block which only had 12 showers, a few too many I thought for such a large site and there were also only 3 sinks in there but I can imagine there were more in the mains toilets which I didn’t use. The shower I used was filthy. There was used bottles in the cubicle and hair everywhere. I appreciate that it’s a big, cheap site but I have camped in many other sites costing around £15 a night (often inc elec, which Shell Island doesn’t have) and they have had no problem keeping the facilities at least clean.

The shops are very good and well stocked from what I saw of them and the tavern was a lovely warm environment on a cold windy night but it did seem rather dated in décor and could do with a facelift as could the rather tired looking games room. The canteen style restaurant did seem more bright and airy but we had breakfast here one morning which was awful. It was a help yourself, greasy affair serve in polystyrene boxes and the tea was in polystyrene cups. For 2 teas, 2 sausage baps and a bacon bap it was approx £11 not at all worth it for the quality received. The play area is lovely, very safe and suitable for children of all ages with a balcony area over looking it so it’s easy for parents to keep a watchful eye while enjoying a drink in the sun. Shell Island does have a bit of a reputation of being popular with younger campers. It does say that it does not allow groups but they cannot truly enforce this rule and it shows. There were a number of groups of younger couples dotted around the place. The group near us were largely ok although they did play music quite loud until 11pm then chatted very loudly until 3am, which no one from the site attempted to show any control over. When the group left they left behind a broken chair, a BBQ and a bag of rubbish which where still there 2 days later when we left. Although Shell Island cannot be completely held responsible for the behaviour of younger campers or groups (they do have 'no tolerance' signs around the place and can be held responsible for the clearing of any mess left behind), I appreciate they cannot deny their attraction to this demographic and in order to keep their younger campers and family customer happy I think they should consider a designated “family area” they certain have enough space for one.

In short, Shell Island is in a stunning spot with amazing views but if you like certain home comforts or standards they it’s not for you. If you truly can “rough it”, then its worth a stay, and we will probably go back for the views and beaches alone.

Just Returned from a 3 night break at Shell Island. Well. What can I say apart from it represents good value for money, and it is located in a superb area of North Wales.

Only issues experienced during our stay were noise and general dirtiness of shower area. By noise, I mean the irritating boom boom boom of about 4 different car stereos throughout the dune area (where we stayed), also a few families who insist on drinking, shouting, singing (more like screeching), and swearing into the early hours. One group even had a huge amplifier and speakers booming away, only for it to be quickly taken away by the camp security. This only happened from Friday and Saturday, so my guess is avoid the weekends if possible. Showers were ok but suffered dirty floors and my other half commented that in the ladies shower, there were used tampons on the shower floors. Again, this happened on the weekend.

Apart from all that - this is one great looking camping area, with some good privacy if you drive around a bit, you can find a great spot for yourself. I must add that even with the aforementioned niggles, we would return here as it is great, and the camp staff are very friendly. We just wont come at the weekend, that's all! Enjoy yourself as you'll be back again! P. S. The dunes are stunning :)

 Just thought I must add my comments;

Shell Island is without doubt the best Campsite in the UK! It has everything you would want when camping. You can camp in a field, in sand dunes, in a clearing in a small wood, even right next to the beach. Its in a wonderful location. I would not hesitate to recommend it.

It is suitable for Families or Couples and you can camp in the thick of it or if you want you can camp over 1 mile away from the noisy bits!

Its not a 5 star luxury site but its excellent value for money
