This amazing place has always been a favourite of ours.
All the staff are amazing & the camp shop and tackle shop is stocked beyond recognition, with everything you would ever need whilst camping.
I have to say, the shower block is the best we have visited by far in the whole of Wales. Love the fact that all of your belongings don't get wet whilst your in the shower because you have your own little changing room.
You can pitch almost everywhere you could think of and it worth having a drive around before settling for a pitch. We have stayed near to the loo at the back of reception before now, but this can sometimes be a little busy late on, so if you have small children, perhaps try a little further away.
All in all, if you get the weather especially, this is an amazing site and the scenery is breathtaking.

Just returned after a weekend at Shell Island with my Husband and we had a great time. The site was really nice. Very clean and the portable loo's were always spotless; we used the shower facilities and drove from our tent to the shower block as it was a bit of a trek, showers were nice and clean and plenty of hot water.
We stayed on the South side of the island as the weather wasn't great; make sure that you have a good drive round and get the best spot - somewhere in the 'valley' or right at the bottom in the tree's.
We stayed for 2 nights and it was really windy both nights; we had 25mph winds on the Saturday night and my husband had to get up twice to re-peg the tent and the guy ropes came out (the floor is sand based so as soon as it gets wet they come out).
The beach at Shell Island is really nice and is probably the main attraction that it is so close to the beach and they allow dogs on which is a bonus! The facilities were good, camping shop and the supermarket; a little overpriced but then you are a captive audience. We took all our supplies with us so we didn't have to pay inflated prices.
Will definitely be returning here in a few weeks. The only thing that would put us off going would be the winds (not sure if this is a regular thing) and the fact that you can't book. Wouldn't want to drive all that way and not be able to get on the site!

Having recently purchased a tent and accessories me, my wife and our 2 year old daughter decided to go to shell island for the weekend. After friend's recommendations and a good internet review stating a family site we thought this would be perfect for our first camping experience.
Having got there we found the site very busy, we booked in and drove around for 15 minutes until we found a spot. We started to unload when a man came over from the nearest tent and although he was polite we were warned that there were a large group of their friends coming and they would be loud and drunken.
So we got back in the car and drove around again, more desperate now, and eventually found another spot. After putting the tent up (in gale force conditions!) we lay down for the night and were just getting our little girl to sleep when we were abruptly woken by the dreaded vuvuzela horn sound coming from a tent over the hedge!
After a poor nights sleep we explored the site and found the lovely beach and well stocked shops, the toilets weren't great but for the money you cannot complain.
After a good day at the site we decided to try and get some sleep again only to be woken this time by louts revving their cars as loud as they can and pipping their horns to the music blasting out! And to top it off as we were rushing to pack our tent up on the sunday morning the wind got up to gale force and ripped the guide rope from the tent and split one of the carbon fibre poles!
The shell island experience will not put me off camping but we will not be going back with our daughter, and in my opinion the site is certainly not for a family, at least not one with young children. Great for getting drunk all day and night with mates though! We would go back with a group of friends and leave our little girl with her grandparents!
If you are planning on going make sure you have plenty off windbreaks and earplugs !

Just spent 8 great nights at Shell Island, can't wait to go back, I'm so glad we didn't let some of the bad reviews put us off.
Yes the site is huge and whilst we were there they closed the site for a few days because it was full, it didn't feel it though, there was still plenty of room.
The shower block was fine and kept very clean, okay it wasn't ultra modern and could maybe do with an upgrade but on the whole it was fine. I do agree with other visitors that the owners should invest in another shower block as there is not nearly enough for the size of the site. I was dreading having to use the portable loos but they are the cleanest I've ever been in, a van drove around daily and they were cleaned.
The shops were well stocked and on the whole not to badly priced. You can pretty much get anything you might need. You can't use debit cards in the supermarket they only take cash so make sure you're prepared.
The views and surrounding areas are stunning. We visited The Victoria Pub in the local village and had two lovely meals. The spar and village store are also great little shops. Barmouth is only 10 minutes away and has a large co-op if needed.
The staff work hard to keep the site clean and tidy, the bins do fill up quickly but there are plenty of them and they get emptied regularly. You do see the odd bit of rubbish left about but the wardens go around removing this (it would be so much better if the litter louts didn't leave it in the first place).
We plan to return in August this year and can't wait.

This really is a home from home camp site. I have been returning to this site for over 20 years at all times of the year. In fact in my younger days this was the place where 20+ of us would meet up for weekends away.
The bar on site is excellent, shop is well-stocked and the food in the cafe and restaurant areas is second to none.
The new toilet/shower block is always maintained to a vey high standard which is no easy task given that hundreds of people shower after a day on the beach.
The beaches are great, on a hot sunny day you could be anywhere in the world.
The only restriction with this site is the tide which cuts it off from the mainland, hence Shell Island, but if you check the tide times before setting off there is no problem.
The freedom to pitch anywhere you like is excellent and has always been one draw to the place.
I have seen this site develop over a number of years and some of the things that have been done don't really please me but I still think of it as my holiday home

I'm so glad we didn't listen to all the bad reviews which nearly put us off.
We went to shell island with another family 4 adults and 3 children 13,14,14 and had an amazing time.
The site is huge and we got there bank holiday Sunday and stayed until Thursday afternoon.
We took our own toilet and toilet tent because of the reviews but I have to say that when we used the portable loos they were clean and had loo roll except on one occasion late at night but it was cleaned for the next day.
If you expect a la carte menus then yes you will be disappointed with the snack bar/restaurant but it provided all the usual junk food. The bar is small and we didn't use the entertainment facilities in the evening as we made our own entertainment. But it was good for half a shandy coming back from the beach.
We set up about 5 min walk from the main area near the sand dunes and it was fantastic .The field we were in was 3/4 full and if you think 10.30 is late for noise then yes you may become frustrated because people had campfires raised off the ground and sat around their tents chatting. There was music at times but usually through the day /early evening.
We had a day at Nantcol falls 2 miles up the road from shell island which was fantastic, dont wear flip flops, the walk to the top is rocky and muddy but the views to die for. Barmouth was disappointing but we took the ferry and little steam train to fairbourne which was like the world time forgot.
The only disappointing feature was the rubbish and peoples disrespect for the environment. The camp site need to empty their rubbish bins more regularly and should have litter patrols around the site all day every day. On the main walk through the sand dunes to the beach there was a lot of glass and cans and general rubbish left I'm sure by day trippers as well as some irresponsible campers.
We will be going back next year as it was a fantastic place to be. The sea was clear blue and you could still see your feet when waist deep. The rock pools were great and the shells fantastic so lots to do for everyone and the space fabulous.
You have to wear a wrist band at all times but the reception staff were really helpful when my son put it on too tight and changed it without any fuss.
The on site shops were a bit expensive but normal for campsites and you can buy logs for your campfire -take an axe because the logs are big

This is the second time I have stayed on shell island, the first being with the inlaws and this time with my sister, brother and his friend.
Overall we enjoyed our stay, both times (despite the first being with inlaws!) and found all the staff friendly and approachable especially in the gatehouse!
he toilets and showers were cleaned everyday, and even though they are a bit outdated I thought they were perfectly adequate especially for what you pay.
The games room isn't that great and I thought the cafe was expensive but I think it depends on what you have.
The supermarket is great for essential items and isn't as expensive as I thought it would be and a lot of items (especially meat and eggs) are locally produced which in my opinion makes it worth it,
the camp shop is very well stocked and again the staff are friendly and helpful and we didn't go into the gift shop.
The warden patrolled regularly and asked us if we were ok when a family decides to pitch less than a meter away on our last night (they asked if we minded anyway, which we didn't) and when the weather got bad, offered us good advice on what to do about the tents, which I think helped.
We will definitely go again, but out of season and would recommend the site to anyone starting out.

A lovely setting but that's it. We've just spent a bank holiday weekend there and it was awful. One toilet block for the largest site in Europe and it was never cleaned all the time we were there. Full of large groups drinking and playing loud music till very late. It's a shame because it could be a lovely site but it was ruined by louts and a severe lack of clean facilities.

There is a new reception building since our last visit in 2007 which seemed to be more efficient with the bonus of a screen showing the weather forecast. We were advised to pick our own spot on this vast site and since it was quiet there was plenty of room to choose from. Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be much protection from the westerly winds, so take plenty of wind breaks!
The ablutions this time round were spotless (could have been due to being quiet time of year) with steel cubicle shower units with a shelf and hooks in each, ideal for clothes and towels, the outside showers provided for wet-suit showering were excellent - powerful and hot. There are plenty of pot wash sinks but unfortunately no sink plugs.
Dogs are only permitted in certain fields and these are well identified. No fires allowed on this site, but scorched grass areas tell a different tale. BBQ's are allowed so long as they are raised off the ground.
Recycle bins are near the entrance and there are plenty of rubbish skips around the site, also plenty of portaloos further from the ablution block.
On arriving at our selected spot we noticed a group of campers nearby that were just driving away and left quite a mess and some bin bags where they had been pitched. This gave the resident seagulls a field day in creating more mess as they scavenged through the rubbish. We were very impressed to see, within the hour, a warden patrol stop and clear all the rubbish up.
Amenities - shop selling camping goods, fishing tackle, designer brand casual clothing and other outdoor stuff. A beach goods shop also selling ice-cream,trinkets and some rather nice pieces of costume jewellery. There is also a very well stocked mini-mart that even sells fresh crab, so don't forget to take your nut crackers!
There is a children's play area.
No EHU.
The Tavern Bar is a small friendly pub with a games room off to one side and also accessible from the pub is a snack bar. It has a large seating area outside boasting spectacular views of Snowdonia.
Three miles away is the pretty little village of Llanbedr which has a Spar type shop (where the owner bakes his own bread) and The Victoria Inn which sells food all day and has a very large beer garden at the back.
This site has a natural harbour with launching ramps which made it very easy for us to use our kayak.
We had a very peaceful couple of days here and would certainly recommend this site for a visit during the quieter periods.

Toilet and shower facilities dirty, no toilet rolls, showers not working and they ran out of cold water on the bank holiday week/end, and had to get hooked up to the fire hydrant to get water. Food well anything that's greasy & not good for you.
Dogs running around fire scorched marks on the grass, drunken yobs with loud music late at night and driving cars to and from the toilets!
