We went to shell island bank holiday weekend in april. Had the most amazing weekend. When we arrived there was a queue to get onto the island, as the tide wasn't fully out. We risked it and drove through the shallow waters - which was very exciting! staff were very friendly when we were 'checking in'.
When we found our pitch we set up within half an hour and got the bbq cracking. The weather was beautiful! we were right next to the sea, and we even saw dolphins!
The weather did turn during the night, it was extremely windy on the cliff edge. So its a good job that we had a good tent!
The toilets were clean and plenty off them (didn't use the portaloos as we were within walking distance to the showers and toilet block.) the showers were very clean, and didn't have to wait for one. The same with the washing up area.
The shop was a little over priced, as was the camping shop, but what do you expect!
On the saturday we walked to the nearest village (which you drive through to get to shell island) we had lunch in the pub there which was nice. The weather was glorious! had a nice bbq that night, the weather was pretty horrendous during the night / but we were tucked up in bed, so it didn't bother us too much.
On the sunday we explored the sand dunes, which are ace! can't wait to go back with family as this is one hell of a place! who would have thought that there was a place so beautiful so close to home (only 3hours for us)
Would seriously recommend shell island! and an excellent weekend had by all!

Just come back today after yet another brilliant time at Shell.
I never once had to queue for the showers this time but have done in the past, but what do you expect at the biggest site in Europe!.
The toilets were clean this time.
The kids love to feed the swan on the pond.
Lovely walking and picnicking on the wonderful beach
We had lovely weather.
Big massive thumbs up

Just spent 2 nights here with hubby and two 17 year old boys over Easter.
Had a great time. Toilets were always clean when we used them though the queues for the showers were always long, also the portaloo I used once was very clean
Boys were happy as they were showing all the footy matches in the bar. Drinks were a good price and food in the Snack bar (not a restaurant) was a good price.
The views were stunning from any direction. Cant wait to go back.

We stayed at Shell Island for the first time last week. Went with our friends who had been before.
Weather was great which definitely made the weekend. No wind, just blue skies all day.
The site is just massive but quite sloping so unless you don't mind slipping out of your bed you need to be careful where you pitch.
We found a partly sloping field with simply stunning views across to Abersoch, Pwhelli and Criccieth.
Reception, security, supermarket and leisure shop staff were all extremely friendly. Prices were very reasonable.
Loos and showers were tired but well cleaned.

I have stayed at Shell Island quite a few times, most recently I went with a friend from work for a weekend stay. Being just out of season (kids were back at school) it was quieter and we were able to get the exact location we wanted, right by the sea.
As detailed in other reviews the supermarket/camping shop have pretty much everything you could need at a price. Advice would be to shop before you arrive and use the supermarket only for emergencies. There's a supermarket in Barmouth (about 7 miles away) with free parking to restock at and a local shop in the village near-by. I can recommend the butchers shop in the village too. We had the minted lamb kebabs from there and they were lovely on the bbq.
The shower blocks are located close to the reception area and are fine. They can get busy and queues are not uncommon (particularly in the high season)
On a previous visit my son and his friend went paintballing at a place just outside Cricceth(?) They had a great time but when you phone up to book they make no mention of the 'extras' that you have to pay on arrival. Under extras they include paintballs which seemed odd as you can't paintball without them. The price I expected to pay was bumped up considerably when we got there. The kids had a great time (which is the most important thing) but the pricing policy is a bit misleading. If you want to consider this as a day out make sure you ask all the relevant questions before you turn up so you don't get the shock that we had.
Back to the island, I won't review the portaloos as I didn't have the need to use them. I've eaten in the cafe and the food was OK but a bit pricey. Having read a lot of the reviews on here I'd say they are generally pretty accurate. I wouldn't choose to go there over a bank holiday weekend as it can get a little rowdy in places but if you choose your pitch you can keep to the quieter areas and avoid the potential disturbances from other visitors. Young drivers bombing around the site is something that the management of the site must get control of.
There are signs as you drive in warning of expulsion for breaking campsite rules but they don't seem to be enforced. One such rule is no camping within 20 yards of another camper without agreeing it first. I've had a 30' campervan pull up in front of my pitch and then argue the toss that the rule was 20' not 20 yards. They eventually moved a little bit but I guess this is their ignorance rather than the fault of the site.
The harbour area and the road into the site are great crabbing spots and the kids can spend a few hours with a bit of string and bacon rind competing to see who can catch the most or biggest crabs. The beach is long, golden and wide. The walk to the sea is a bit of a treck when the tide is out but it was reasonably clean when I was last there. If everyone just picked up their own litter it could be spotless! I'll be going back to Shell Island this year and do recommend it to friends with a few provisos. The scenery is beautiful and it can be a great retreat. The clientèle can sometimes be its downfall.

The scenery is beautiful, but the facilities were disgusting. I was aware there was only one proper toilet and shower building and we would have to make do with portaloos, and this in itself would not have been a problem IF the portaloos had been kept clean. But no, they were filthy. When I complained about this the staff were very nice, but told me it was because the majority of the campers were dirty people. I think the loos were cleaned twice when we were there.
It seems the management were trying to do something about it, but I think they have the wrong priorities. The site has 800 pitches, there are only 10-15 (I think) showers and toilet cubicles for men and the same for women. There are not even enough portaloos.
We are not luxury campers by any means, and don't even have particularly high standards, but this was diabolical. We will never return to Shell Island campsite and do not recommend anyone to go there.

Visited Shell Island for the first time this year as our 2 week family holiday.
First impressions were great, booking in no problem, although weekends are very busy, we went tue to tue!
The bar/club very old, outdated and scruffy. Although if you just come to drink and be entertained then it's fine.
The supermarket has everything you will ever need and myself found the prices to be the same and sometimes cheaper than local ones. Staff very helpful and cheerful and they will charge your mobile phones for a pound!
Camping shop is great for wood, bbq items and windbreaks but can be very expensive for other bits. If you plan to use a fire bucket (the only way approved to have an open fire) buy before you leave or pay £25. Or look around by the bins after the weekends, reuse and recycle!
Again staff really helpful.
Toilets and showers are ok and serve a purpose although very long closed times for such a big site!
Porta loos located all over the site, these are 'cleaned' once a day, never seemed to be inspected 1 or 2 loo's had paper but not all and the way some people treated them was disgusting! We are all in the same boat why not respect each other and leave as you find!
Bins are and absolute disgrace! Rubbish is crushed into them by a digger and not emptied enough or picked up from round the bins meaning a gale of litter. The usable items, chairs, windbreaks, fire buckets, bbq's and even a bike that was left in the bin by out pitch is amazing! Why not have a recycle area for usable items, we salvaged enough to make our holiday far more comfortable.
1 recycle point by the shops that has no facility for paper, plastic or card we felt this not really on for such a big site.
I know it sounds like a rant and maybe it is but we did enjoy our 2 weeks we would go again but maybe pick a spot further from the loos and shops, just to avoid the weekend visitors. It felt like a minority spoils it at shell island with the parties and speeding and leaving the loos in a state a real shame for families.
It is worth going to the area which is amazing and has loads to offer.

Having read some of the reviews on here I feel some are a bit harsh. I've stayed here 3 years on the trot and due to go again in a few weeks time. The place is huge, if you cant find a quiet place to pitch then there's something wrong. It suits all needs those that want to be near the showers / shops, some with sea views, open fields, sand dunes. The place is fantastic. I've never had any trouble when I've gone - yes the showers get busy but if you time it for late evening I've always got in with no problems. I didn't use the cafe (as that's not camping is about) it's there if you want it however I make a point of going to bar at least once. The views are fantastic as are the sand dunes (main reason we go) due to the moving sand dunes every time we go we have to find a different pitch . No hook ups where we pitch (I believe there's some nearer the site entrance?) we always pitch well away on the outskirts, fill the water tank and when we run out time to go (like I say 4 days ish)
On the outskirts there's always a nearby water tap however the porta loos really are poor so be prepared, I've never seen them clean ( I use the motorhome so dosn't bother me)
If you do want to escape the island, Harlech is near by with truly amazing beaches, and if you want to go into Harlech itself there's a lovely curry house at the top near the castle.
All in all a great site and roll on the next visit.

My family and I have just come back from Shell Island after being there for 4 days. It is a massive place and plenty of room to pitch your tent anywhere you chose.
Where ever you pitch you are never far away from the beaches as there are different types, all very clean. The scenery is fantastic wherever you look.
On the down side it is also a very windy place and no matter where you pitch you can not hide from it.
The facilities are poor to say the least. The toilets are filthy and look like they've never been cleaned. The showers were clean and tidy. The games room is small and dirty and the kids were bored after 30 mins. The shop was well stocked and reasonably priced. The pub was well looked after and well priced also.
Overall the setting was great but the facilities where a let down. Don't

This is a great place if you want to spend all day on the sand dunes or the beach with the kids and every night by the fire, toasting Marshmellows and looking at the stars. (Saw 5 shooting stars!)
The place is just brilliant for a good chill out and plenty of time with your family & friends, we did venture out to the 'club' once but would never go again, just not our cup of tea, too many chips squashed on the floor, some very strange attire going on, an a few stares cos we'd managed to arrive with clean faces and clothes! We might be in a tent but doesn't mean we have to wear last night's pj's! lol
The supermarket (don't think Tesco, think quaint handy local shop - just not small), stocks pretty much everything you need, some things are a bit pricey, but on the whole, it's good for most things and the staff are lovely.
The camping shop is great - selling practically everything.
The launderette is good, 3 washers, 3 dryers, £2.50 - £3 a wash and 20p for 4 mins in dryer, need about 24/28 mins worth.
There's also a kids park, but as we were pitched up right over by the sand dunes, the kids only went on the park when we went to the shop.
We went crabbing on the Causeway a few times, and we also went for a few days out to Barmouth (got a parking ticket for parking in the Co-op car park for over 1 1.2 hours so beware!), also visited PorthMadog a few times.
All in all, had a fab time, the staff at Shell Island are lovely, the place is lovely (except the bar in the evenings), the kids had a brilliant time and we all came back brown as berry's as we had brilliant weather! Who needs Spain!
This is our 2nd year here, we won't be back next year, only because there are so many other places to visit, but we will definitely visit again.
