It was our first visit to shell island and I have to say not with the best of weather forecast, but we loved it. Went for 10 days and despite having to move pitch because we got flooded out, really enjoyed our stay. I do agree with other reviewers about the young noisy so called campers. But as we were there they changed their regulations on under 18's . I think people have to understand regarding the showers at very busy times, Shell Island is a naturee reserve therefore whenever the owners have asked for permission for more showers, they have always been rejected. The wildlife and the environment will always come first and I think after seeing the island for myself I totally agree it should stay that way. If you don't mind camping the way it should be ,then you will love this place,Go on, give it a go you will love it

Just got back from Shell Island and hate to have to say we were disappointed with the site. We were so looking forward to coming here, having been coming to Barmouth every year since a child it feels like going home so already familiar with Shell Island I thought it was going to be great camping there - however will definitely stay at one of the many other campsites now available in the Barmouth/Talybont area next time I know camping is all about going back to basics but I cant help but feel the "biggest campsite in the country" which is packed out most of the time could invest a few quid in some more toilet blocks and showers, I actually didn't have a problem using the portaloo's and didn't find them smelly at all but the point is ive camped on several different sites and they all have several toilet and shower blocks, and their nowhere near the size, and would probably take in nowhere near the amount of money that shell island does. I really do dread to think what it must be like trying to get a shower at the most busiest of times. I did like the fact that entrance on and off the site was patrolled by security, however did not see any wardens patrolling the site and was kept awake both nights of our stay by rowdy, very drunk, teenagers who's language was appalling !

Have visited Shell Island on a number of occasions and do like it a lot - its real camping and not for those who like their luxuries. We went at Easter this year and the weather was great, which also meant the site was completely full in no time, but it still did not feel over crowded. The scenery and surroundings are beautiful. My only criticism of this site is that it is getting a bit too popular with groups of young people who want to party all night - we were kept awake half of one night with a very noisy and inconsiderate group with loud music and even louder foul language that we don't want our children to hear. Admittedly the warden did take action the next morning, and the group were quiet as mice the next night. Please keep a tight rein on this so as not to alienate family groups. There are plenty of toilets but during busy times they need to be cleaned more regularly. Other than that we still love the place - its relaxing and friendly.

Booking in was efficient, security was good. The location, magnificent.
There are shops, bar/restaurant and a snack bar-prices are reasonable.
Stayed for three nights and our only gripe was the ablutions, which were filthy. It is a busy site, and it is the campers who are using them, but they only appeared to be cleaned once during our stay.
Not a quiet site, but that's to be expected on a site of this scale. However the noise never became a problem late at night and certainly did not disturb us.
The beaches are gorgeous and the views fabulous.
This site is definitely worth a visit.

Visited Shell Island with my son, daughter, sister-in-law, niece and nephew.
I have to say before this trip I was a camping virgin so was dubious as to what to expect - I do like my creature comforts!
On arrival I couldn't believe the sheer size of the camp - it's huge. Considering it was August and the kids school hols it was busy but not overcrowded.
The toilet/shower block is basic but clean and tidy. I must say though the portaloos leave a lot to be desired - my advice is to take with you a couple of loo rolls and a hand towel as they have neither!
The shops are well stocked and the equipment shop is very reasonably priced and pretty much have everything you need.
We had a beach fire whilst we were there, we sat and admired the views of Snowdonia and watched the sunset with toasted marshmallows.
Considering I didn't know what to expect, I have now kitted us out and we are now the proud owners of a tent, roof box and equipment. Just can't wait to go back and take with my husband who, at the moment, is getting nagged in stereo by me and the kids.

Its all been said, in busy periods showers and the like its bad but isn't everywhere Been going for 20 years now and its changed in some ways more for the better, Rich the warden / owner has tightened up the no noise after 11pm rule and its enforced. Yet the rules are plain enough for all to see, and a benefit to most since to enjoy this wonderful place you need to get some sleep. However the RAF have gone so not as many jets as there used to be, which in a way is a shame as my kids often plane spotted There is still a magic about the place the harbour, causeway (often cut off but an attraction in itself) the salt marsh, the clean Sea & beaches . The showers you just get used to (there always the sea) the extra loos a bonus

Shell Island re opens on March 16th - hooray Childhood hols spent there, to own kids back over last few years. Last year did 10 days May 1/2 term, 14 days August and 5 days October 1/2 term (fireworks great). Have pictures on phone and screen saver - for when I get withdrawal symptoms. Yes, its not luxury - its real camping. Yes it rained most of the time we were there last year, but I would not swap it for the world. To wake up every morning and see the view is work it.

LARGE site, average price, huge dunes of sand, right next to sea and beaches. Can walk along beach south for 5 miles to Barmouth, or north to Harlech. Train station about 1 mile away, bus stop 2 miles away, but the owner will come and pick you up if you phone them. Road to site floods sometimes. Not very nice bathrooms, not many for such a large site. On site shops and restaurant and pub with entertainment?, nearest large supermarket is Porthmadog.

Been camping at "shell" for donkeys years. THEY OFFICIALLY ONLY ALLOW TENTS. However, if you have a motorhome or campervan you have to erect a tent next to it and "pretend" you are kipping in that. The site itself has a great atmosphere about it. The views of the sunsets across the sea, and mountains are breathtaking. The pub is quaint and cosy but the canteen is a rip off with school meal type service and fare. The worst part about shell island is the toilet and showers. They can not cater for the number of campers as it is so popular. In short the toilets are over used and therefore become smelly and quite dirty. In the past you could actually have logfires and campfire chats through the night. Sadly this has now all changed. The warden ("Rich") and his team run a zero tolerance regime. No more camp fires, no music after 11pm, and signs everywhere telling you what you can not do. Pity because it was far more relaxed a couple of years ago. My advice to get the best out of "shell" is take ALL your own food, go when it is quieter, (may/June) and take a camera, you will not be disappointed.

My first visit great, my second visit I was 10mths pregnant and had to camp in the sheep poo field down the road as it was 10pm and closing but went in the next day, still great. 3rd visit with my baby and other toddlers even greater. If it rains the cafe has a great buzz and the staff are great serving a good breakfast. WHY are people leaving glass bottles in the sand dunes! I collected lots of broken glass and its such a shame that there are still lots of people leaving piles of rubbish in the sand dunes. This affects the beauty of the place, the wildlife and goes out to sea killing marine life and anyone including dogs can really hurt themselves on broken glass. SHOW RESPECT for this lovely special place.
