 This is a lovely site with generous pitches. We had requested a sheltered pitch and were given one which was ideal. The owners are friendly and helpful, the facilities were clean and although we were concerned about what seemed to be a small number of showers and toilets it wasn't a problem at all. We brought our dogs for the first time so it was great to have access to trails through heath and woodland directly from the site. The chickens are very free range and were a bit persistent and not ideal with our mid training terriers (although to be fair the chickens are clearly mentioned on campsite website) but the children on the site seemed to love them. It was really pleasant to walk around small holding to see the alpacas, sheep and pigs. Nearby airbase meant some low flying aircraft sometimes late at night. The Sorrel Horse pub is good, we went to their Monday Curry Night and enjoyed the food. Would recommend a visit to Shingle Street beach. We bought honey produced on the campsite and it was delicious. Overall a relaxed and pleasant place to stay, would recommend it.

We loved this site, we were pitched next to the turkeys (31) which was something different! The pitch was massive, loads of room for our 6 birth tent, trailer and car. They hire out fire pits (we bought our own) and wood, so it was lovely in the evenings to have a fire. There is a lot of animal noise from the cockerel, sheep and turkeys so you have been warned! Didn't really bother us though. Very friendly owners.
The toilet/shower block we used was unisex, it was very clean and the shower was gorgeous ( even though it was a push button), only moan was that there was no soap for the 2 days we were there!
There's a footpath which takes you to the Sorrell Horse pub, so no road walking. The pub did fantastic food with gluten free options.
Great for visiting Orford Castle, Walberswick and shingle street.
Would definitely come back.

We have just returned from a superb weekend spent at St Margarets Campsite. We were greeted by the owner upon arrival, a very enthusiastic a helpful man who kindly showed us to our pitch. The site is excellent offering the lovely mix of a small country site but with all the necessary amenities. The lovely part is that you can let the children roam the site and playground without the fear of cars crossing. Obviously there is movement of cars but its minimal, much less than other sites we have been to. Our children really liked feeding the Alpaca and collecting the eggs. We didn't visit the pub on this occasion but have done before and it's a good pub.
All in all an excellent site which we will be re visiting again before the summer is out!

This was the first site my husband and I visited (we are new to camping) after buying our folding camper. We wanted a small, quiet campsite and chose Shottisham after reading lots of reviews on here. We could not have chosen a better site! It is beautiful.
The actual campsite area extends over 4 small fields which are each screened with natural hedging. Each individual pitch is huge. No pitch is too far from the facilities which are first class. There are 2 sets of toilet facilities - we used the toilets and shower in the newer block as it was closer to us. The toilets and shower in here are huge! No worries about trying to squeeze behind the door if you are a little on the larger size or are juggling children. They were spotlessly clean at all times. This newer block is a unisex one at the moment (it is part of a phased build plan and will eventually be separate men / women when phase 2 is complete) but the other block is separate men /women. Connected to both toilet blocks are under-cover washing up areas. Fresh water, waste disposal, chemical toilet disposal are all easily accessible and clearly signed. Electric hook-ups are discreetly placed but easily accessible.
That's the boring bit out of the way. Now for the best bit! As well as being a campsite, this is a working smallholding. We were lucky enough to have a pitch that overlooked the smallholding part so happily sat watching (and listening to) sheep, chickens, alpacas and turkeys. For me this was heaven and I loved waking to the sound of the cockerels but you have been warned - they do start crowing at daylight which is very early in the summer months. I also loved watching, and talking to Claire and James as they went about their smallholding duties. They are both very friendly without being intrusive and are happy to chat to you. As mentioned in previous reviews, they encourage the children to accompany them in the evenings for 'egg collection' but adults can go too and get close and personal with the livestock. I even got to bottle feed a lamb. 😀
The whole campsite is very relaxed and welcoming - a perfect de-stress to modern life. And to top it off, there is the beautiful Sorrel Horse pub just a couple of minute's walk down the road which serves good, wholesome food and is dog friendly. Claire and James have set the bar extremely high. We booked a second visit straight away as we have struck lucky and found a site that we will return to again and again.

I'm reluctant to say how good my stay at St Margaret's was for fear of it being over run. I was a bit nervous about camping alone for the first time but Claire and James made me most welcome without interfering. As it happened I was the only camper on my part of the site.
The site is neat and tidy and the older toilet and showes clean, the new block looked very good although I didn't use them as the others were nearer my pitch. There are plans afoot to build another new block.
There's also a posh bell tent under construction complete with timber deck.
I spent a whole day at Sutton Hoo, the primary reason for my visit, but enjoyed evening and early morning walks in the woodland adjacent to the site.
Very little light pollution so the night sky was terrific.
If I return to Suffolk I would definitely stay again.

It's difficult not to resort to clichés when describing just how lovely this site is. The reception, welcome and service provided by the hosts is perfect, neither too intrusive nor too little. We were able to ask when we needed anything, be it help, advice or service. Our children were invited to help with the animals. They especially enjoyed the proximity to the wonderful local park, constructed almost exclusively from wood, which kept them entertained for hours. There were plenty of other children around to play with but we weren't ever disturbed by excessive noise. The showers and toilet block are a little dated, but they work just fine. The new toilet block is just about ready to come into use but we didn't feel the need to venture over there. We're a bit old school - the toilets etc were clean, useable what more do you need? We were able to sit out around our fire for 3 of the 5 nights and it was lush! Woken by bird song and the sound of the ducks.
As for the area, we were there to visit Staverton Thicks, a block of ancient woodland, oak and holly, which we did twice. Not easy to find or access, but well worth it if that's your thing. Colchester Zoo was a bit tired and sad, in my opinion. Sutton Hoo was nice enough.
My only hesitation in wholeheartedly recommending this site to you is that I wouldn't want it to be too busy next time we go, because of this recommendation.

Visited for a couple of days and found the owners to be very friendly. Maybe as it was coming to the end of the season but found the grass to be quite overgrown. Apart from that if you want a nice quite out of the way place to stay with plenty of wildlife this could be the place. The fact that open fires ( off grass ) are allowed is definitely a bonus. The toilet / shower block, though clean and roomy, was unheated and there was only one shower for each male & female, though a new block is near completion so hopefully this will help. There is a village pub a short walk away that does meals, though we didn't visit so can't give an opinion. All in all it is a very basic site so found it a little expensive at £19 per night with EH (out of season ).

Booking was easy, booked two pitches for a long weekend.
Great campsite in a very nice area to explore, mini festival at the pub during our stay was great.
Campsite was tidy, showers/toilets clean, new unit would be good though.
Very nice to have camp fires. Bacon, sausages and eggs all good.
Would return!

This is a really lovely campsite. Proper camping! Not fancy, and not gimmicky, it is just a good old fashioned site. Claire greeted us on arrival and is exceedingly bubbly and friendly.
There are approximately 30 decent sized grassy pitches spread over 4 small different sized fields, separated by hedging and trees. Some pitches have EHU. One field mainly has seasonal pitches with caravans and awnings that appear to have set up base for the summer. There is also some 'glamping' accommodation on site if you don't want to take your own tent/caravan.
There is currently one loo block with separate male and female facilities, two toilets and one shower in each half. As other reviews have mentioned it is dated but was cleaned regularly and we had hot showers at all times of day. There is a new block under construction.
There are solar powered fairy lights in the evening to show the way to the loo! (The campsite is far away from street lamps and if you get a clear night take look at the stars!)
There are two covered washing up sinks. Fire pits can be hired or you can take your own if you have one. Freezer and fridge available at the farmhouse to freeze cool blocks or store produce if you are lacking your own cool box/fridge. Eggs, jam, sausages and bacon for sale and firewood.
There are turkeys, alpacas, pigs and sheep for the children to help feed and chicken eggs to be collected. Beware some of the chickens are very free range! We regularly had them wandering in and out of the awning and a particularly friendly/curious one even hopped up into our campervan! Our children were in there element.
There is a park next door which caters for both young and older children, plus there are woods around the site and open heath so plenty of space to play.
The pub is walking distance and serves lunch, afternoon tea and dinner at very reasonable prices.
Although the site is in a beautiful part of Suffolk it isn't hugely touristy but we had plenty of trips out including:
Aldeburgh and Thorpeness for nosy round the shops, run on the beach, hired a rowing boat on the Meare, ate ice creams, picnic food from the various delis and then fish and chips for tea (approx 40 mins drive)
Felixstowe (40 mins drive) visit to Landguard Fort and the port, beautiful and industrial at the same time! My husband took our older children on the passenger ferry from Old Felixstowe to Bawdsey Quay which is only 4 miles from the campsite and I drove round and met them!
Bawdsey Quay, (4 miles) shingle beach but excellent for collecting shells and thin sandy strip of beach alongside road for paddling.
We also visited Snape Maltings and Woodbridge by car and there are walks in all directions from the site. Or you can stay put and chill out with a good book!
The campsite is perfect for families and couples looking for a quiet site with a gentle pace. A new favourite site for us and we will return.

I don't want to say too much as don't want it to get too fully booked ;o)
We loved it here even though the weather was awful. The kids had a fantastic time running about freely in the woods on the swing and in the tree house and they LOVED collecting the eggs and feeding the animals.
It's a very short walk to the pub which is community run and serves good food.
We spent a day in aldburgh too which was about 45min away.
You can hire a fire pit and buy some wood and we did just that and toasted marshmallows and kept us nice and warm.
The only negative is the toilet and shower block as its very, very dated and is kept as clean as possible but I had no hot water when I had a shower and was icy cold. HOWEVER this is being sorted with a new shower/toilet block (phase 1 of 2) nearly finished.
The camp looks lovely at night with fairy lights lighing your way!
We will be back and this time hopefully the sun will shine.
Oh and the owners are lovely too.
