We arrived on a lovely sunny afternoon and we were met on arrival by one of the owners. He was very cheerful and gave us a choice of places to site our campervan. We decided on the option of just by the toilets / showers which did not prove to be problematical at all.
The pub next to the site - the Sorrell Horse was fine - a bit dated - but just to please husband there was a folk evening that night which was very pleasant and kept us up beyond 11.30 pm which is pretty good going.
The free range chickens were a delight but a bit worrying when they alternatively inspected and tried to sample the chicken breasts bbq'ing on the grill. Neither the heat or the proximity to ex brothers appeared to put them off.
The owners could not have been more helpful and the eggs from aforementioned chickens were lovely. Toilets / showers very clean but access to them could be difficult if campsite was busy, On the whole a lovely site and we will make another booking.

St Margaret's is a small family run campsite in the lovely little village of Shottisham surrounded by gorgeous countryside. My partner and I stayed here for three nights over the bank holiday with my nephew and his dog and we would definitely come back.
We were given a friendly welcome and a choice of where to camp (which I always like). There is a caravan field, two tent fields and a little secluded glen area which is where we chose to camp.
It was a lovely spot where we were the only tent, surrounded by trees and looking down over the children's playground so it was easy for us to keep an eye on the boy! The only criticism of the pitch was that there were a lot of very sharp stones which we had to clear away the best we could before pitching.
The site is dog friendly but as there are a lot of free range poultry (you can buy their freshly laid eggs), dogs must be kept on a leash whilst on site. Luckily there is a field adjacent to the site, next to the playground, where dogs can have a free run, plus there are lots of nice countryside walks in the immediate vicinity.
There are two undercover washing areas which were adequate and we found we didn't have to queue to wash up despite the campsite being fairly busy. The toilet blocks are a little dated but kept very clean and in good supply of loo roll although with only two toilets and one shower for each sex I expect there would be some long queues during very busy periods.
I only had to queue for a shower once but as I just sat on the stall reading my book for 10 minutes this wasn't a problem at all. One criticism I do have of the toilet facilities is that soap and hand drying facilities are not provided and having to remember to take soap and towel with you each time (particularly if you're stopping off at the toilets on your way out or back from sightseeing) was a bit of a nuisance.
Whilst we didn't visit it, there is a pub serving food literally within a couple of minutes walk of the campsite which I imagine would prove very handy to some.
There are so many places to visit in the surrounding area that a weekend was definitely not long enough to cover even a third of the attractions. I would however definitely recommend you try to fit in a visit to Rendlesham Forest Centre which is beautiful with lots of walks, cycle trails, play area etc and Dunwich Heath Coastal Park (National Trust) which is stunning and a lovely place to visit for the day, especially if you like birdwatching and beach combing.
All in all, a peaceful, clean, family friendly campsite in lovely countryside with a plethora of activities and sights within easy reach and I am sure we will be visiting again - next time by ourselves!

We always use this website to find campsites to visit and always go by the reviews that other people have left. We look a risk on this one and we are so glad we did! The campsite was lovely and quiet, quite small but plenty of space between plots and the owners were friendly and helpful.
The surroundings are lovely, lots of wildlife to look at and a playing field for the children, there was also a playground just down the road in the next field.
The facilities were dated but clean, just two toilets and one shower in each so could get quite busy in the mornings but it wasn't a problem. There were fresh free range eggs and home-made jams for sale in the reception and a fridge freezer which is free to use.
The local pub the Sorrell Horse is a very short walk away and does good, reasonably priced food and sits in the heart of the very pretty village.
The price for the two of us with no hook-up was £12 which I thought was very good, however, if you have children they do charge an extra £2 each regardless of their ages.
We really enjoyed our stay here, we had perfect weather and spent the evening gazing up at the thousands of stars, which when you live in town, you can forget are there! We will definitely return here very soon and can highly recommend it for a relaxing get-away.

My daughter and I have just returned from a two night stay at St Margarets and although we have been Scout camping many times this was the first 'non Scout' camp we have tried. We were not disappointed in any way. We went for peace and quiet - just to get away from life for a couple of days and were well rewarded. If you want lots of activity and 'buzz' then this is not for you!
The nearby beach was small but OK, sandy and shingle, but beware of the strong currents.
Facilties were always clean and never seemed to run out of toilet paper - didn't have to use our own supply!
Site was level and spacious, when we arrived we were showed round the site and given the choice of pitch so we chose to be in the shade in the morning. The owners were always willing to help and very friendly. There was a fridge and freezer there for anyone to use.
There are three different fields to choose from so we went in the tent field as we didn't require a hook-up.
I can't say much about shops, pubs etc as we did all our own meals with supplies we had brought with us. We did go into Ipswich for an afternoon which we found to be a good shopping town with all the usual shops you would expect
What more can I say - a really great, laid back place to stay and we would definitely camp there again.

This is a lovely basic site on the edge of a small village backing onto heathland and woods. There are plenty of walks from the site and a good pub in the village a short walk away.
The facilities are very clean. I will definitely return. There is plenty of space even in the height of summer and separate fields for tents.
Fantastic for exploring this part of Suffolk.Plenty of attractions close by.

I am almost loathe to review this site as so much of its' charm is the fact that it is SO quiet and it would lose that if it became too busy! But what a gem.
E-mail communication before our visit was good and the welcome at the site great. All the info you need is in reception and they even sell a local map with footpaths etc. It is a 'help yourself' if no one is around.
We shared the large tent field with a Dutch student with her little hiking tent and bicycle! She became part of the family, so we effectively had it to ourselves. The site drains very well and is fairly level. The caravan field was busier but still had lots of space. (hook ups available but we didn't need one. There is a fridge freezer in the reception area which we used)
I suspect the dishwashing facilities (one sink) and toilet block (1 shower and 2 toilets for each side) would be stretched if the site was full to capacity, but we didn't have to wait long when there was a wait. They were always clean and stocked with loo roll. Plenty of free hot water for the shower.
The playing field is huge and perfect for ball games, kite flying, dog walking (on lead) etc. It also leads to some lovely walks. The playground isn't on site but can be quickly and safely reached by the children without going anywhere near an traffic and is brand new and great fun. Perfect to send the kids to when they get up at 5:30 to avoid disturbing the rest of the tent and site - no neighbours near the playground to disturb either.
The site is dog friendly - if on leads - and the good local walks (off lead) help here. Our dogs liked watching the rabbits playing in the tent field a little too much. We didn't see deer, but heard them at night. So much better than traffic noise - of which there is none
We didn't use any local pubs but they did look good. We bought fruit and veg from little roadside stalls outside people's homes and meat, bread etc from brilliant local farm shops.
Shingle Street beach was a bit of a disappointment for us as the children wanted to swim. It drops away dramatically and has severe currents, so no swimming allowed. Bawdsey Quay provided lots of black mud which they enjoyed but we didn't! After much investigation we drove up to Aldburgh which was also shingle but without the current. Pay and display car park with a pleasant walk to facilities in town. Excellent fish and chip shop if you are prepared to queue, plus lots of book shops etc etc
Another hidden and underused gem is Dunwich Heath coastal centre and beach. It is quite a drive from the campsite (22 miles) but well worth it - a day was not enough to explore this National Trust site as we spent it all on the beach! Also great farm shops along the way.
There are lots of other attractions around the site, but we were only there for 3 nights and were limited by the kids' desire to spend all their time on the beach, and the need to take the dogs everywhere with us. So no time, need or desire to see the castles etc. (we heard they were great)
All in all a brilliant site if you like small, quiet friendly sites surrounded by nature.

A lovely quiet clean site which is in easy reach of all the surrounding attractions. The site is situated in a lovely village with an excellent pub where you are always made welcome. The toilet/shower block is immaculately kept very clean and tidy with toilet paper always on hand! the site is very well kept and quiet with plenty of room for everyone. There are electric hook ups as required. There is also a large adjoining playing field for the children/adults. The owners are very friendly and helpful, even lending us a ground sheet! We have stayed on many sites but this one is by far the best. Recommended to all.
For those not familiar with this area it is steeped in history from medieval burial sites to World War 2 relics, forgotten beaches and quaint market towns with a wealth of shops, indeed nearby Woodbridge is one of the nicest places to shop at a relaxed pace. A beautiful area to either explore or relax in.
This site is in the middle of this area and once again we couldn't recommend it high enough.

The site is very basic with a clean but simple The toilet block so simple there wasn't even any soap. But it is in a lovely location near to some stunning parts of the Suffolk Coast. However it is a hours walk to the nearest shop which is really well stocked. The site itself does not have a shop if you forget something and the village has no shops.
Local pub is 300 metres away which serves good pub grub and real ale and local ciders and beer.
If you are looking for a basic family friendly site without amusements or fancy dan facilities just lovely bike rides and walks and loads of space for little people to run around this is a good site.
One big downer from my point of view is that they do make sole campers pay double even when I offered to use my one man tent. Considering the space at the site it does seem unfair to make me pay for two people.
