We have just returned from a very wet and windy weekend away at Lickpenny, a great base for visiting Matlock and Bakewell.
The site is well spaced out, with hardstanding, sheltered pitches which are surrounded by high hedges, giving a great deal of privacy, and some are serviced pitches with water and drainage.
There are 2 spotless toilet blocks, with free showers, a laundry room and a veg prep room. There is also a well stocked shop in the reception area.
We have 2 dogs, so the dog walk was ideal, and the children's play area is well away from the vans, so we weren't bothered by any noise at all. All in all, we loved the site and will definitely go back.

Just got back from a weekend at this campsite and what a great site it is, access in and out is easy. The site around the pitches was spotless no litter and grass mowed well. The toilet blocks were spotless and centrally heated which was welcoming as other sites we have visited didn't have this luxury and the showers and taps are on a push button and with ample hot water. The pitches are very spacious and on hard standing with hedges around them which gives your pitch some privacy and all have electric hook ups. The children's play area is spot on for kids of most ages and my daughter made a lot of friends their which is always nice.
The surrounding areas you have plenty to do Matlock, Bakewell and Chesterfield nearby with plenty of places to visit and eat, the donkey sanctuary is well worth a visit and plenty of walks like Monsal Dale and Eyam is a historical village of interest. Going back to the campsite one thing I did like was we had the option to stay longer that day of departure for a small fee so know rushing around So all in all a lovely campsite and we will visit again at some point.

The not so good bits.
Press button showers, nooooooo and the mens don't last long constantly having to press button and although warm wasn't hot whilst we was there.
Tiny sink in the disabled toilets and the spray head needs attention its far to wide when on and needs a smaller one.
Turn the lights off or down at night, the night views in the moonlight are spoiled by the street lights
Now for the good bits
Good directions from the M1 as shown on the website, definitely stick to these. The campsite is just off the main road and there wasn't a lot of noise either. Entrance is wide and accommodating for the biggest of units.
We loved the view though but not worth an extra 3 pound a night.
The facilities are fine and there are two lots on site
The pitches looked big, we had the full service pitch but for three pound a night extra we wouldn't have it again. Bring your levelling blocks your going to need them :)
The wardens were warm and welcoming, fairly secure with a security barrier with coding
We didn't use the shop as we were out exploring but they did appear to have the basics
There is a playground for the kids
There is a sainsburys in Matlock town and a number of pubs - curry houses - kebabs etc so you wont go hungry
Easy trip out to chesterfield market, east Midlands designer outlet, the railway centre and Mansfield all from here
Overall
A split decision in this house, one yes and one maybe. This is a big campsite, the wardens seem very friendly, hope your clutch control is good as you may need it
Otherwise a good campsite and well located

We normally only visit Caravan Club sites, but passed this site last year and liked what we saw.
Visiting for the weekend, we were given one of the large pitches with open views to the front. Having two children it was handy that we could see the playground but it was not too near to be a nuisance.
We liked the openness of this site compared some caravan club sites, where you are often looking into the front of other caravans. Plenty of open space away from caravans for ball games etc.
Toilet blocks were ok, could have done with a few more toilets, might have been a problem if it had been busier. One toilet block did have a small children's bathroom with a bath, great if you have younger children.
All pitches are hardstanding and some are a little bit sloping but no great problem. Small shop selling sweets, ice creams, basic essentials and newspapers (if you order them the day before).
There are two garden centres nearby and on a Sunday there is a large car boot/market nearby.
On Sunday morning there was more traffic noise from the nearby road due to this car boot, but wasn't too intrusive.
We liked it so much, we took advantage of the offer of a ' link weekend' and we left our caravan there until the following weekend for £3 per night. Would have cost us more to tow it home and back again. You can also stay after the 12noon departure time, £3 till 3pm and £5 till 5pm.
Site fees were a little bit higher than on a caravan club site even though it was low season. Facilities could be improved but we were happy to pay this for the open views of the countryside, relaxed atmosphere and being able to go to bed when we wanted without being disturbed by fellow caravanners.
We will visit again as it was relaxing and site was quiet & kept clean and tidy.

Visited on a Saturday, Sunday and Monday, lovely clean spacious park, with excellant toilet and shower facilities. Playground if I had brought my grandchildren, (but didn't)
Small shop on site with essentials, but said it was open Sunday and when I went lights were on, but door was locked, in afternoon.
Wardens booked us in on arrival and we found our own spot, which is what I like to do.
Garden centre 5 mins away, but the public houses for evening drinks and meals a long down hill walk. Could not walk back as no pavement or street lights, and very busy road. Plus very steep up hill. Buses do not run frequently and stop at 7pm, so had to get a taxi back.
It won't put us off going again, lovely country side, and Matlock very good for shopping and sight seeing.

We come to this site first off every year to get us in the mood you could say. Although it is not a million miles away from where we live once you are there you feel like you are.
The entrance is a bit steep as you leave the road into the site but once over that the reception area is well organised as is the shop on site and the pitches are individually segregated and hard standing and massive with enough room to park you car either side of you caravan even with an awning up.
The toilet/shower blocks are out of this world very modern and spotlessly clean and ample supply of hot water. There is a play area for the kids and a playing field to have a kick about if desired.
Very close to Matlock which is a very nice village as is Matlock bath which is hugely popular with bikers for some reason. Well mannered staff who are very helpful at all times.

Lovely site with beautiful views. The pitches have hedges between them making each one very private. The toilets/showers are very clean but may be a bit crowded in the busier months. Good facilities for washing up, etc.
It is an easy but long walk into Matlock. Well worth the visit. The fish and chips from the Matlock Fish Bar opposite the park are probably the best I've ever tasted. The park is lovely on a sunny day and there is a walk along the river too.
If you have a dog don't bother with the Scottish Nurseries (garden centre) across the road. Instead make the effort to continue along the same road to the next junction (about half a mile or just over) to the Matlock Garden Centre. Dogs are allowed in here and you can sit outside the cafe on a lovely terrace and have a great breakfast.
Love this site because it is clean and tidy, private pitches, well located and peaceful. The staff are friendly too.
We will be back.

Oh dear, Oh Dear, Oh dear!
This site has for many years been my favourite site to visit. It is certainly the best in the area with the best friendly and helpful staff. Nothing appears to be too much trouble. They have super sevice pitches for those who want them, though we prefer the more simple life! Everything is (or was) in place for a superb relaxing visit. Children’s play area well away from most caravans, yet still viewable by parents from their pitches. Good toilet blocks, well kept and clean. Super size pitches. What else could one need?
Well as said earlier (or was) - Despite around half of visitors having dogs, the management have taken the decision to remove the fabulous dog walk in an effort to place Log Cabins! This is in my opinion one of the worst moves ever carried out by a site owner. A large area with beautiful trees was a haven for dogs and wildlife and is now decimated by bad arborial work which has left trees looking ridiculous.
Come on Lickpenny. Reinstate what was one of the jewels in your crown.

We stayed here the first weekend in September, the site was busy but not quite full. A nice site with large hard standing pitches. The site is terraced but some pitches we slightly sloping. Plenty of water and waste points.
Two nice toilet blocks with free push button showers, plenty of hot water. The site has a parent and child room with a mini bath pretty much the same as caravan club sites which was very useful for the children.
Each block had a pot wash area which was very warm and had two sinks and a microwave - never had to queue to use these.
This is a very large spacious site, loads of room for the children to play and a nice play area which can be seen from many pitches but far enough away for the children not to be heard.
The site had a large wooded area that was set out as a dog walk area.
Reception doubles as a small shop selling the essentials where newspapers can be ordered. An ice cream van visited each day which the children enjoyed.
You can walk to a couple of garden centres from the site and Matlock Bath is only a few miles away.
Normal departure time is midday but you can pay £3 to stay until 3pm and £5 to stay until 6pm- this was a great idea as you are then not relying on the goodwill of the wardens to allow you to enjoy a full day on site.
I would recommend this site and would certainly return.

We booked this site very late on a Thursday night for arrival the following day, it was a bit further than I wanted to travel for a weekend away but everywhere closer was fully booked and boy was I happy I booked
This site is one of the best I have visited, in fact I was so impressed I left the caravan there on a £15 weekly link for the next three weekends,
The pitches are huge and level the park is immaculate,
The staff are friendly and so laid back, shower blocks clean and fresh plenty of hot water,
Utility room with washing machines, dryers ironing board, veg prep area room and dish washing facilities even a microwave,
Could not fault this site and its very reasonably price, truly 5 star
