Have just returned from a 5 day break at this campsite and can honestly say it was great. From the friendly reception, the extremely large pitches to the immaculately clean facilities.
The pitches are nicely set out with bushes around to give you a bit of privacy. We were lucky to get pitch 19 which overlooked the park so we could keep an eye on our 2 children and we were a stones throw away from the toilets.
The toilets and showers were lovely and clean and we always had powerful hot showers. There was a family room with a babybath, a microwave in the food preparation room and washing and drying facilities on site.
Obviously a well loved site and we will definitely return.

Just got back from a long weekend at this excellent site.
It is situated about three miles from the town of Matlock on a high terraced site. Pitches are huge - in either single or double bays. Those at the top of the site have magnificent views across the Derwent Valley. All pitches are hard stand with hook-up; there are some super pitches with their own water taps as well.
Site fees are high at £21 a night, but you gets what you pays for. There are two well-maintained facility blocks, with toilets, showers, laundry and washing-up sinks. Reception stocks a small range of grocery essentials, and also sells newspapers to previous-day order. There is also an information room. The downside is that some pitches are quite a walk from either facility block.
About three minutes walk from the site is Scotland Nurseries, which as well as horticultural items, also sells gifts, some camping stuff, and the usual 'add-ons' found in the average garden centre. It also has a chocolate shop and restaurant. The latter serves breakfast up to 10.30 each day - but at £6.50 plus £1.60 for tea it's a rip-off.
There is a good 'chippy' in the village of Wessington, two miles away, as well as two pubs serving food. There is also a good pub down the hill in Tansley - but again it's a bit pricey.
Most parts of the White Peak area are easily accessible from Lickpenny, whilst Derby city is less than 20 miles away if you fancy a day of retail therapy.
All in all, this is a really good site with both family and disabled facilities, which makes a good centre for a visit to the Peak District. We will certainly be returning.

We only managed to stay one night but will return again, easy access to the site but can get a little congested as the arrivals area isn't clearly marked. Booking in is fast and friendly, the site is quite large and mostly laid out in a terraced fashion. Most pitches are large and flat and well laid out. TV you have to be lucky and satellite may be a problem because of the trees. Nice wc and shower blocks. A couple of nice garden centres a short walk away, great views.

Just returned from a lovely weekend at Lickpenny. Despite being the height of the summer holidays, the site had a lovely, peaceful atmosphere. We never had to wait for the showers, always plenty free and very clean. My little ones loved the bath in the children's bathroom (in block near reception) and equally enjoyed the playground. Our pitch was perfect overlooking the park, with a large grassed area right in front. We will definitely return to this site.

Just got back from a weekend at Lickpenny and have to say we couldn't fault this site at all. Friendly greeting from the reception office, given info and security barrier code on arrival and shown where to go to our pitch. The pitches are a good size and nicely set out with shrubs and bushes to give a little privacy.
The facilities were great and always clean and tidy. We have a three year old son who absolutely loved the child's bathroom with a small persons sized bath and toilet for him! There was a microwave in each food prep room plus washing, drying and ironing facilities available.
Awaited the arrival off the 'fish and chip van' Saturday evening but it was a total let down. He arrived just after five but told us it would be at least half an hour before things were ready which was fair enough as the fryers would need to heat up etc. So we decided to shower and return. I then had to stand in a queue for over half an hour to order and pay for our food THEN had to queue for the same amount of time to get our order! Have to say the food was lovely when we got it but not something I would do again. In hindsight think we would have been better off driving over to Matlock Bath and eating at one of the chip shops there as our youngest was ready for bed by the time we got our food at gone seven o clock.
Overall, a great stay and a site we will definitely be returning to :o)

Well I feel like a bit of a killjoy as this site - despite being everything that other reviewers have already said - just wasn't our cup of tea at all!
There are lots of positives. The staff are very friendly and helpful. The hardstanding pitches are exceptionally large with more than enough space for our caravan, awning and (on the first and last days) two cars - there was even a huge coach-sized mobile home on site while we were there.
Some pitches are hedged on one or more sides to give a bit of privacy. The facilities are very modern and clean, with added extras like a free hairdryer in the showers, a microwave in the washing up / veg prep area and a separate disabled / family wet room for those that need a bit more space to shower / toilet.
There is a dog walk area with well-placed dog bins (although dogs must be kept on leads in this area) and a woodland walk just beyond the park boundary. There is a good play area and lots of large flat green areas suitable for ball games.
So why didn't I love it?
* As another reviewer mentioned the traffic noise from the nearby road (the busy Matlock to Alfreton A615) was pretty constant, meaning the site never ever felt peaceful.
* Hardstanding pitches have their advantages, but these are exceptionally hard! You'll need a big hammer and lots of rock pegs - be prepared to lose a few as in some patches it felt like hammering through solid concrete! The shop stocks spare pegs at 50p each. Also don't wear flip-flops on site as you constantly get gravel in them, ouch!
* When the site is busy, there always seems to be someone coming or going, meaning that cars are going by your pitch all the time.
* 3 showers and 3 loos in the block nearest to us, plus a further 3 showers and loos in the block near reception - during the week this was fine, but I had to wait quite a while for a shower at the weekend and the site still wasn't even half full.
* The showers are the push button type and they only dispense about 10 seconds of water (I promise I'm not exaggerating) before needing another push. They were hot and the pressure was great but I'm sure they wouldn't be abused if the site owners increased the time a little making it possible to use both hands rather than standing with one over the button.
In summary, if I needed to be in the Matlock area I might visit this site again, perhaps out of season when the weatherproof hardstanding pitches would come into their own. However, I wouldn't want to be there during the busy summer holiday period as I don't feel there are enough facilities and I prefer a more peaceful location.

Lovely Lickpenny ! Booked this site quite late, only 4 days before arrival, really impressed. The pitch sizes are huge, we managed to get a super pitch with beautiful views from 6A, my parents had pitch 0, as close to the showers and toilets as possible. The facilities were immaculately clean, the site is really nicely laid out, with a dog walk and children's play area, and picnic areas dotted around the park. We were very impressed with the helpfulness of the staff, in particular Guy, thankyou for a wonderful weekend. This site is now in our must return ASAP book. Also the car boot on a Sunday morning is only 5 minutes down the road. The Royal Oak Pub served wonderful food. A real find, please give it a try, a gem of a site

This site was VERY clean, spacious site. The showers and toilets are spotlessly clean, good powerful showers and there is a hairdyer as well. The super pitches are HUGE on hardstanding, each pitch was on a different level sectioned with hedges and lots of trees so you feel quite private. Beautiful views over the peaks. Excellent position for visiting caves, towns and walking. There is a small play area for kiddies and an area for playing ball. Highly recommended, would certainly return.

This was our first visit to Lickpenny. This is a nicely placed site for visiting The Peaks. Nice tidy site with beautiful views.
Toilets/Showers very clean and in very good order. If you have a child and like to keep an eye on them while they play, I would recommend the semi-circle of pitches in the middle of the site as they overlook the play area. The staff were very pleasant and helpful.
Chatsworth House and Chatsworth Farm shop a must visit. Would definitely visit again.

Just returned from a 2 night stay at this site & was very impressed. It is kept to a high standard and the pitch sizes are excellent. There are two toilet blocks on-site with 3 toilets and showers for male and female in each. I'm not sure if this would be too little at peak times as it was busy even though the site wasn't full.
There is a good sized children's' play area and plenty of grass to play / relax on, with picnic benches scattered around.
It is just 3 miles from Matlock / Matlock bath. The nearest village is Tansley about 1 mile away with a couple of pubs that looked nice. We didn't visit as there didn't seem to be a footpath leading to it and we felt it was too dangerous to walk.
A new reception was being built so I was not able to fully appreciate if there was any local information available.
Would definitely like to visit again and recommend to anyone.
